  • One of our favorite places to snorkel on Big Island, Hawaii is at Honaunau Bay, also known as 2 Step by the locals. Honaunau Bay is famous for its crystal clear water, Green Sea Turtles, and colorful tropical fish. Snorkeling at Honaunau Bay is actually considered by many to be some of the best in the entire state of Hawaii.

    I am trying to get my bearings on 2 step. Is it what was Kahalu'u Beach Park? We've been there many times. We've also been to Honaunau, but didn't particularly have good snorkeling there. Is it listed on a tourist brochure? Is there a map that shows it? Thanks for the advisories about not stepping on coral & not getting too close to the turtles. When the turtles are
    hauled out, people worry about them & bring buckets of water to throw on them. They are actually fine, just taking the sun. So leave them alone is the best advice. Thanks for posting.

    • @LiveThatAdventure
      @LiveThatAdventure  Před 2 lety +1

      This spot could be a tiny bit advanced for novices. There is a sandy Beach on the left side of the bay but we have never gotten into the water there. If you have swimmers that are not strong in your group I would definitely recommend bringing some sort of floatation.

    Is there another snorkeling spot recommended for beginner swimmers in Kona? Also, do you recommend a flotation belt instead of a snorkel vest?

    • @LiveThatAdventure
      @LiveThatAdventure  Před rokem +1

      Either a flotation belt or snorkel vest works. It just depends on your preference. As long as you wear a PFD- personal flotation device, everything should be good for you. The reason I chose a flotation belt is that I can remove some of the foam modules as I practice my swimming. As for beginner snorkeling spots, here are a few options:
      #1 Kahalu’u Beach Park
      This spot has a lifeguard on duty, and the shallow, protected cove that keeps the currents manageable and waves small. The beach is a great spot for beginner snorkelers. The sheltered cove further benefits from a seawall for calm conditions and good visibility. Plus shallow water makes it a good spot for beginners. The deepest spot is about 10 feet!
      #2 Kikaua Point Park
      The shallow cove makes swimming challenging but perfect for floating on the water to explore marine life. Beginner snorkelers can practice in the shallow, sandy cove to spot small fish. Head toward the rocky exit of the cove to find Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles and larger fish munching on the seaweed. However, don’t go past the tall lava rock formation near the exit of the cove as strong currents can take you out to sea. Always swim with a buddy here and stay well inside the protected cove walls.
      #3 Hapuna Beach Park
      The best beginner snorkeling can be found on the northern end of the beach, near the Westin Hapuna Beach Resort. Look for a small cove that is shallow and with a sandy bottom along the north cliff wall of the beach. Professional diving instructors like to use this cove for beginner snorkeling classes and scuba diving training.
      #4 Spencer Beach Park
      Spencer Beach Park is located on the Kohala Coast, above Hapuna Beach. The crescent-shaped sandy beach has a long, shallow reef close to shore making for excellent snorkeling.

    you should know that the snorkeling gear you are using is very dangerous and should never be used for any length of time. when you exhale the carbon dioxide it fills the mask and cannot be effectively cleared. this can cause dizziness and even fainting. i believe most places have stopped selling them
