  • How will the 25-06 compare in penetration to the 458 Win Mag. Comparing the 115 TSX at 3177fps to the 350 TSX at 2492 fps. The 350 grain bullet has a pretty good reputation on very large game. The 120 Grand Slam at 3057fps thrown in for good measure.

Every time I watch your shooting range/hunting vids I can’t stop thinking about how lucky you are to live up where you do. Absolutely beautiful up there. Enjoy the videos.

When the Swedish armed forces converted from 6,5x55 to 7,62Nato (.308w) we found out that to get the same penetration against light armour we could not use the NATO standard loads but use heavier loads.

Hard to beat that old 6.5x55. My sister has one and I can't believe the accuracy of the 96 military carbine! Especially when I was young enough to see the sights.

Look up Art Alphin web page, he has some fascinating vids about arms and ammo. There is some of them on YT,but full series on his own page.
When the tests were done with the new to be cartridges mthy tested lot of various test media sand snow, ice.
wood, steel, live cattle, live horses, dead cattle, dead horses, cadavars of other kinds.
Out of the best ones in Nordic trials, 6,5 and 7mm came the beat out. Only to be a Unity cartridge for Sweden, Norway .
Germany was trying smaller bullets also, the closest for them in 1896 were a 6mm x57 with 115 grain ammo. But that rifle model failed and Mauser and his 98 and 8mm won.

The Speer 120 btsp shot under .5” in my 25-06 too but was worried about penetration. Probably be fine for deer but decided on the Barnes 100ttsx. Doesn’t shoot as good but will usually group under an inch. Not sure if the 115 tsx would stabilize in my old Remington 700

Excellent presentation Sir, wondering if you made mention of how far the targets were at point of impact.
Also curious of your best penetrating round with your 6.5 ultra mag.

About 7 yards to torture test the bullets. 130 grain TSX in a 6.5 really penetrates like crazy...better than any 160 grain bullet in fact.

Thanks for the information... My Go2 bullet for a .257 Weatherby is the Speer 120 BTSP... .3 MOA accuracy...3170 from a 26" Remington 700 Stainless/Fluted. Haven't tired the Nosler Petition 120s yet but would be my bullet under 200 yards...

Nice demo. Couple days ago I tested some old Winchester yellow box 300 gr Power Points in .338 Win Mag. Two shots clocking 2462 in old magazines. One slipped its core but the other one looked really good. Same weight and nearly same speed as the .375 H&H and they kicked about the same too. Found those at a gunshow. Elmer Keith's old darlings. Thanks Greg!

Always loved the 338 but never owned one. The CO in Pond Inlet had one for Polar Bear work. It was considered a giant killer back in the day..and still could be.

I have had good results with the Grand Slam bullet in the .25-06, even the new variety that is not as good as the original. It always shot more accurate than the Partitions in the various .25-06 rifles I have owned over the years too.

I’d say the 25-06 at close bear charge range should do you ok, especially if you are not alone and there is an other gun there too! And really, gun no gun if your time is up it won’t make a difference!
30-06 again is what is most versatile!

    • @north61

No argument. One gun? I'd pick a 30-06. This 25-06 has smitten me though.
