  • It's been a while... time to collect the Renault GT Turbo from Jtech Automotive. Has it been restored to its former glory? That's not all, the Ford Escort RS Turbo also has a few issues that need to be taken care of.

Iv always thought of the 5 as the hooligan bad boy of the 80's hot hatches. A nice set of tastefull wheels and a dumpvalve would go nice just for the max power scene nostalgia 😊

The RS was serviced probably less than 600 miles ago, when i had it we went through it front to back, the timing was miles out,it had new oil, plugs, dizzy, leads and tuned it..its used to start like a pig and we fixed that too..we put a new uncracked dash and refurbed all four seats, refurbed the carpet and sprayed the floor while the seats were out. The brake fluid will need changing though. Glad your not doing crazy mods Raj just stay out of those puddles lol...enjoy!
    Love the channel.

Wow - thanks for watching and your feedback as a previous owner. Not planning any crazy mods, only subtle upgrades and improvements. Everything will be fully reversible too 👍🏼

Love the Renault 5 GT Turbo, I had one back in the 90s it was so fast back then and stuck to the road like glue.
    I’d definitely have the Renault.👍🏼

Ren 5 GT turbo brings back great memories. Used to sell cars for a Renault dealer from 1989 to 1991 and for nearly £11K at the time it was a lot of car for the money. Stick on a devil exhaust and you heard it before you saw it.

Loved those Ford steering wheels from back in the day, I can feel the type of plastic in my mind just by looking at it!
Shout out to the mad hazard light switch position, flashing away at you. Every Ford had that switch in that position in the day.

Really nice R5 GTT, would keep it original-ish, maybe a slight turbo upgrade to give it some more oomph.
I do know a couple of guys that did shoehorn a 2.0 16v turbo in theirs and those GTT's are mental to drive.
My R19 16v Phase 2 (LHD) also has a 2.0 16v turbo lurking under the bonnet and it can be quite a handful some times.
As a Renault guy I'd choose the R5 GTT obviously but the Escort is also cool oldskool 😎

Hi I use to have a white series 1 and had all my work done by Chris Todd at power engineering which sadly isn't there anymore, I wouldn't have the dump valve my was all waste gate sound much better, also a lot of Cossie parts fit on to these engines, best option I think for both your cars is a full remap.

    R5GTT all day long!
Audio: Forget the sub. I know that's highly controversial, but I have a better alternative, Buy yourself a pack of no more than 30 sheets of Silent-Coat. They have a short video that will stun you. Starting with the bonnet, create 2 letters L or T, one each side of centre. The important thing is to overlap across a short leg so that you have a minimum width of an inch that is double-thickness. Replace the felt. In the doors, create a letter H so that you have 2x 1 inch overlaps. Nothing needs to be square on and don't overdo it else you create a drum or thrumming source. Use another 2 sheets behind each rear doorcard. Then distribute across the rear floor and door, starting under the rear seat squabs. Judicious use rather than carpetting is the way to go.
When it comes to replacing the speakers, just buy good quality Pioneers designed for the job. The trick when mounting them is to ensure that the vibrations do not reflect into the bodywork by using some thick O-rings and fibre washers. The weight of the sound deadening will be less than the weight of a sub and its amplifier. The latter will only suck power from the engine in stress on the alternator. Of course, there's no extra wiring needed either. Making sure that you deaden the tin-can effect means that you'll actually get much better sound clarity, especially at full chat! The other benefit is that the doors will close with a classy click and tapping the side panels will surprise even the most ardent critics who decry its thin metal.
One final point on fitting a sub. Just look up the cost of replacing a rear parcel shelf in the R5GTT, if you can find one. Bear in mind also that the GTT shelf is a lot more flimsy than those fitted to other cars in the range. After a while, the only music you'll want to hear is when you go in and out of full-chat, oh, and minus the "chump" valve.
Security: Even until 2010, no Renault bound for the UK was fitted with an alarm at the factory. It was only our insistence in the UK upon leading others in invoking EU rules that an install facility was built at Southampton. There is a proper factory kit, NLA in the UK but may still be available in Spain. There is a trick with this. I have both the factory kit and a Toad alarm interwoven in my R5GTT, but neither is controlled by the Plip. (Again simpler wiring). Insurance approved if fitted by a pro. The way to install it is to use a spare fused feed through a switch. If you put your thinking-cap on, you can in fact hide the switch in plain sight. The benefit of that being that if you forget to turn it on, the thieves sooner or later will be forced to succumb to 20 out of every 60 seconds being howled-out, with no apparent means of turning it off, coz locking then unlocking the car won't solve it.
The way my leccy wired it up was with an ear-piercer under/behind the glove-box and another non-horn-sound warbler hidden in the engine compartment. If it goes off, there's no mistaking that summat is up! The whole lot is wrapped in an identical fashion to a factory loom, so no-one could easily work out a method to disable it.
Driving: All you need do is play back your own words in this video, making a note of the adjectives you have used. If they all please you somewhat, you're 90% of the way there. It's an 80's car with a 50's engine - indeed the last where Louis Renault himself had a design influence. The brothers Renault had racing in their blood. Just remember what Renault were doing on the F1 track back then; the Phase 2 is only a reflection of their latest learning brought to the market to stick it to VW, hence the vast differences. Until you've done at least half-a-dozen true emergency stops and got proficient at taking the car around corners on 3 wheels in wet or dry conditions, you have _not_ driven it; you've only been a conductor!
Wheels: You listened to your man when it came to keeping everything stock and, believe me, it'll pay you handsomely. If you want an improvement, if it hasn't got the stock size tyres on presently, that'll be the most rewarding thing. They are pricey, but you do get the car exactly as intended! After a while of ownership, I've had my R5 nigh on 30 years, you come to realise that the engineers at Renault know a thing or two about turbo driven cars, and when you've built your own confidence that comes from the driving fun, rather than making apples and oranges comparisons, realisation will dawn that the car never needed any increase in power to be as much fun as anyone could wish for. If you go to my www.youtube.com/@lowiepete/about page, there's links to a full resto thread on PistonHeads.

Just seen the VW Van video on the Silent-Coat site. There is absolutely no need to plaster every flat surface like they show there! They will have created a drum and get low-frequency headaches pretty frequently, that's not even taking the weight and cost into account. The video I'm referring to shows two metal shelves being hit with a hammer, with one shelf having nothing more than a single sheet. If you create overlaps, you take the reverbs to infinity along the double-thickness. When the body guys did my car you could read the incredulity on their faces when I gave them their instructions. Once they saw what actually happened, there was almost disbelief at how effective it was.
