I haven't played the NES game myself but I've watched a few people play casually or speedrun it, and it's not too bad overall. I think most people would call me crazy, but I really love the soundtrack. Those groovy jazz tunes really set the mood!
Wow, thanks Drunk. You gave a very balanced review of this game. You actually made it sound like a pretty interesting game. Which is unimaginable, considering the thrashing that AVGN gave to this game. Kudos on you for giving this game the fair treatment that it needs. Have a great rest of your day as well, drunk
Yeah true. But i haven't played it myself. And don't intend to. So i can't quite say personally how i feel about the game. I'm just saying that i'm impressed that SNES Drunk managed to give this game not only a fair review, but also make it sound interesting. If only as a passing curiosity
I used to own the NES Dick Tracy back when it came out, and I actually kinda liked it because it was innovative and difficult, kind of reminded me of the first TMNT game on the NES which was really fun and challenging.
I only realized in the last year that "Dick" is a throwback term for detective. I've been listening to a true crime podcast called Small Town Dicks and you can imagine my confusion until I figured that out. Nice review Drunk!
@@joebrisado Yeah,I know it's for comedy purposes, though I think it's unfair some players may skip the games because of the commentary, like,on castlevania 64 when he said there was no music. @@lainhikaru5657 A lot of people seem to take a commentary designed to be comedic in nature as absolute fact regarding certain games. ET for the 2600, Friday the 13th for the NES, Shaq Fu, Michael Jordan's Chaos in the Windy City, and numerous other mediocre (but somewhat fun) games are passed over as a result of the negative commentary. The actual worst-of-the-worst games I've played are so awful, broken, and often just unfinished that there's not even enough content to make a good satirical video on them.
If it was back in the day, that's ok, you get a pass, but if you've spent way too long playing this game...recently, then you're just a straight up masochist... lol
I had the Genesis game growing up and for some reason it became one of my favorites in my collection. I agree it could have had some actual detective aspects thrown in to make it a hidden gem but honestly as a kid for what it was, the variety in it was more than enough to be enjoyable. It sparked my interest into more Detective type characters like Sherlock Holmes and Tintin. I saw the movie after playing the game and realized it was a comic series so that sent me down a rabbit hole of finding stuff like it.
Id love a modern Dick Tracy game, L.A Noire and MegaMan and Mafia mixed up. I wanted to love that movie as a kid, i was so excited, and it was so bad... These games were bad too. Make the new game a detective mystery - really distinct colors, maybe give it that cartoon look rather than realism... I love the Dick Tracy "feel"; the time period, noire plots, dames, the distinct mob crime villains. The color scheme. And the watch, (I cant believe they haven't made a cell phone watch that looks like his watch!!!!). "Calling Dick Tracy!"
This has definitely become my favorite snes gaming channel, I love your content bro. Hey I wanted to ask you if you have played G-O-D: Mezame yoto Yobu Koe ga Kikoe, a fan translated patch was released recently, I'm currently playing it and it's pretty good. I would love a video from it if you have played it. Greetings from Costa Rica my man and hope you keep uploading great content.
He didn’t say “I hope you have a great rest of your day”, it was just “have a great rest of your day” Thanks SnesDrunk, I think I will now. Keep up the great content. CZcams needs you.
Probably the best line you had about this was at around 3:45 when you said you "would recommend this one only as a curiosity since it has some good ideas...". I never even knew the ideas you highlighted even existed without your commentary! haha. I grew up with this era of gaming and with this game in particular everything just seemed so random. Now that I have an appreciation for these little details on how the game functions, I am admittedly curious. But it's like checking in on a old girlfriend you think has got her act together, you know it's still terrible.
Counter-intuitively so. Out of all the DT games released around 1990, the NES version was the only one that WASN'T a side-scrolling shooter... this would have fared much better on PC, alongside all the other detective games that had an annoying "use your gun responsibly" philosophy. This simply isn't something a 10 year old can fire up and enjoy.
This is actually my favorite NES oddly enough. I was hooked as a kid and since im still a Retro Junkie, I still play it. Its my go to relaxing game and all these bad points dont bug me at all. To menir made sense, Big Boy would want to hunt me on the streets and your car if you get out in time can act as a shield against bullets but dont block your own. Its tough being the good guy but damn it I was gonna be tougher.
Great video! I remember playing this game on Nintendo when it came out and actually finishing it after several days. You’re right about it being annoying! I remember getting very frustrated with it , and having to take a break a few times. This was a fun little walk down memory lane.
This was one of the few games in the world I owned (for some reason) as a kid, so I got a lot of mileage out of it. I was able to finish it from a very young age and as I recall it's mostly due to the fact the enemies shoot in very set angles and if you're patient you can worm your way through any situation without taking much damage. Honestly it's a pretty decent and ambitious game that tried things a lot more interesting than most NES games of the time, but at the end of the day I'd much rather play any given Mega Man or Contra.
I actually really like the detective side of the game. Taking notes what streets to go to, people's alibis, and such and then getting in and gunning down the joint. My only gripe is that snipers and gunman shoot immediately once they're on screen, giving you no time to react. So I just have to inch forward because you REALLY don't want to die in this game.
I might have to go for a snes drunk t-shirt after this one!!! It’s great to see someone pick up the mantle that AVGN has seemed to put down... would love to see more NES games
Anyone old enough to remember when this movie came out? The advertisement blitzkrieg and subsequent failure the movie was? Pretty sure this was made to cash in on the newly created superhero genre that Tim Burton's Batman produced. Dick Tracy was the answer. God what strange times those were.
DukeSpook'Em I do, I used to call my local theater and drive in every week asking when it was coming to theaters. Had it on vhs, then dvd and then Blu Ray and will get it on 4K whenever it finally comes out.
Dick Tracy and Who Framed Roger Rabbit? were two NES games I'd often rent as a kid. Never made it very far in either, but I loved the portions where you could drive around in the world.
I've been curious to see a video like this. For a while I was only familiar with the NES game, but seeing the GB and Sega versions made me realize that the NES one is unique with the clues adding a bit more thinking to the action. I agree it's still not great because the mechanics are awkward and not apparent without the manual. I still have sort of a soft spot for it, though.
This game's most important legacy was providing some of Cygnus Destroyer's background music. I feel like there were quite a few NES games in this era that really aspired to be a robust, varied experience, but fell flat for one reason or another
The game play style of Dick Tracy kind of reminds me of another NES game called, "Rescue: The Embassy Mission". It'd be great to see your take on the game as I could never really get the hang of it.
this is a nice fair and balance look at this game, not played up for laughs like AVGN's I should mention that anyone who likes the first Shinobi games on Genesis will be in the right mindset for Sega's take on Dick Tracy.
When I was younger I never saw it as...the game had bad controls...I just thought it was hard. Also, the fact I could drive a car and get out of it was pretty cool. The game felt so big.
I owned the Mega Drive game as a kid, and calling it a run and gun is being very generous. It's more of a casual stroll and gun. This makes game (especially the bosses) really difficult as it's almost impossible to dodge anything.
I got this one for my ninth birthday. I didn't love it, but didn't hate it. Sounds like it actually had some interesting ideas that weren't executed as well as they could have been. The driving was always annoying back then. The side-scrolling stages seemed decent. It's probably a case where it would have worked out better if it was more straightforward. Maybe if it was more like Vice: Project Doom, it might have been a better mix of styles.
Please review the Golgo 13 games on NES. The gameplay is similar to Dick Tracy on NES as in its a sidescrolling shooter/beat em up, but without the crappy driving and much more variety like 3D mazes, multiple choice conversations and Ninja Gaiden style cutscenes in the second one. There are two games on the NES- Golgo 13: Top Secret episode (1988) and Golgo 13: The Mafat Conspiracy (1990).
Great video. I do recall being frustrated by this game as a kid. A game that I thought was similar, but much better was Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Wasn't as unfair, and the graphics were so cartoony that it made it fun to play.
He's a police detective, of course he's going to drive within the law and get in trouble if he shoots unarmed men! That's the argument anyway, it all depends on how realistic you want your games.
I do like the Dick Tracy game on Genesis. The ''Gallery shooting'' aspect is the mechanic that give the edge otherwise it would have been boring, but that way, it makes the game a more intense and nervous. Did you reach the stage 2-B the one you're on the side of the moving car shooting others's? If yes you should have put some footage of it, don't change much things, but feels different and would have done justice to the game. Personally, cannot pass this stage. On the last purge of my Genesis collection, I decided to keep this one at my own great surprise !
How to make this game instantly better. Use game genie and get infinite health. Infinite health automatically corrects the stupid programming decisions , and makes this a puzzle solving adventure game rather than an action game.
The Genesis game is a lot more fun and doesn't get enough credit, probably because of AVGN hilarious review of the NES game. The Sega version also has some fun driving stages. It reminds me a lot of Dead Connection for the arcade, which came out 2 years later in 1992.

Pretty hard on the Sega version. Think of the time it came out in. As a kid that game was 1000% better than the other ones. I only had a SNES but I loved playing that game on my friends Sega even if it was a tad repetitive.

But EVERY fucking enemy(like 100 mfs)has either a gun, bazooka, fucking nuclear launch codes, u name it, but this alley is too small for guns..
Doesn’t Dick Tracy on Genesis also have a novelty stage for every second stage of a case? For example, there’s a side-scrolling driving section in stage 2-2.
The Genesis/MegaDrive version of Dick Tracy was way better. I remember renting this game at BlockBuster videos from years ago and I must say the snipers was the most annoying part.
Loved how you did a whole anthology on the series on different systems vs one game. Good departure from previous videos. Felt fresh
Man, Dick Tracy has some amazing handwriting on that notepad!

@DejaVoodooDoll As life is subjective.. yes, it definitely was simpler.

Yea I don't know why.
Well if you want to play an NES game as a trenchcoaty man in a car that does not control as well as you'd like it's nice to have options.
