Table that weighs less than 19lbs | DIY Polycarbonate Furniture

  • I made a super lightweight table or desk that weighs less than 19lbs. I used 25mm polycarbonate panels that are typically used for greenhouses. I cut and shaped the panels with basic wood working tools like a circular saw and palm router. I poured total boat epoxy into the ends to make the polycarbonate ends solid. I discovered that total boat 2-part epoxy is great for glueing together polycarbonate. In this video I will show how to cut polycarbonate panels, how to sand poly carbonate panels, and how to seal the ends of polycarbonate panels with epoxy.

A cool future project would be to add LED lights to a table or structure like this one, made out of polycarbonate.

The Total Boat breadboard ends are a great way to solve that detail challenge with the open ends on the panels. 👍

Very cool design. Slipping the steel nuts into the channels was very clever. An alternative idea from boat building since you already had epoxy mixed up-
Thicken some epoxy with colloidal silica filler and make 3/4” epoxy fillets with a rounded paint stirrer to create the convex fillet. Then lay a few inches of fiberglass tape and dap with clear epoxy for crazy strength that almost disappears.
You’d want to scuff up the polycarbonate with sandpaper to give the epoxy more surface area to bond to.
Your ability to see materials for what they could be rather than what they’re marketed for is very impressive.

People used to make tables to be solid, stable and durable. But that was before the YT algorithm forced them to use ever more "unconventional materials". What ever happended to form follows function? If anything I would add sustainability to that in this day and age. This table is the opposit of "fantastic" design.

That's a really neat project and very polished, even for a first iteration. My only concern would be that because it is so light, it would be easily knocked around during use. Use in a corner or at least next to a wall might be required.

I guess a lot of people might get inspired by your project here, to those I just want to say: If you must have a light weight table (and I really dont see a reason why you would want that in the first place) but if you absolutely do need that, please have a look light weight wood instead. We do not need any more plastic on this planet just for the fun of it (and for views in this case I guess). Wood also captures carbon from the atmosphere, which is something that we do need.

Can polycarbonate be dyed? If so, you could drill small holes in some of the cavities and slush some coloured ink around inside of them, to get different effects.

Just curious: how does the ploycarbonate panel age? What's the table going to be like 10 years from now? does it get discolouring? gets softer or more brittle? thanks!

As a carpenter who needs to set up and break down a jobsite daily- lightweight, stiff tables are the way to go.
Hollow core doors or plywood torsion box tables work well.
Folding or detachable legs would make it great for backyard BBQs, easily hung on the wall in a shed. The table wouldn’t be as stiff or clean looking but pretty functional and unique.
