    • @IndyRockStar

      I was thinking about the LH Explorer bird, but the neck seems very thin. I guess it makes sense since it's the signature guitar of a small lady.

  • @boxcarjim1
    @boxcarjim1 Před 4 lety +6

    I bought a B stock one of these from Andertons here in the UK; not because it was Lzzy's signature (although she really rocks) but because I have always loved Explorers since I played one in a college band back in the early 90s. The white/bound "LP custom" style was just too good to ignore, and as I play for my own pleasure these days I couldn't justify the £2000 for the Gibson version.
    I agree with most of what Phil says here, the neck is a really nice flat D carve which is really easy to play - its probably not for shredders, but that suits me just fine. The frets are finished nicely, it stays in tune well and has good acoustic resonance. Its a reassuring weight, but considerably lighter than my LP (Epi '96 Korean made standard), making it comfortable to play for a longer period on a strap.
    The pick ups are clear and quite articulate and surprisingly not that hot - making it quite versatile, and not just an out and out rocker. The neck pick-up is the weaker of the two and might be a worthwhile upgrade at some point.
    Now some issues. The "ebony" fretboard had definitely been dyed, it took a couple of months and two treatments of lemon oil to not come away without black finger tips. I found that the set up was indifferent and needed a 1/4 turn on the truss rod after the initial change of strings. A hairline crack has appeared on one side of the neck joint in the 6 months I have owned mine; I suspect this is nothing to worry about but it has devalued the guitar.
    The reason mine was B stock was the switch tip was missing, but I have since found that there are QC issues with the wiring. I have already had to have the soldering iron out to sort out a couple of "dry joints" on the switch and pots. Its supposed to have US made electrics but if this is the standard they ship, its really not a selling point - I would have rather had the far--east made budget versions and done my own upgrade.
    There are some things to like, but the QC has really let it down at this price point.

But my latest is a Kiesel California Carved Top 24 fret model that plays like a hot knife through warm butter. I've had the Kiesel a week and have already gone through a set of strings, I love it so much. But I have a bunch of Epi's too and I love each and every one of them. The neck is not bad at all the weight is really good lighter than my Carvin CT624. Real Truth I hate to say it, but the Johnny A semi-hollow Epiphone has been $999 new for years and some of the new MiM Vintera Fenders are over $1000. On the other hand, the low end gets less expensive and better, and the $5-700 range in MiM and Epiphone are generally quite good these days. Not the same as American, but absolutely playable, reliable guitars.

He demonstrated me that epiphone fretboards are not 'aligned', it means that the frets (wood space) are smaller and 'out of the right spot' (metal frets), this means that your epiphone is always going to be slightly out of tune.....what a shame!! why it is like that??

    The _ONLY_ thing I dislike visually is that the pickguard doesn't match the shape of the "horn". I wish it matched the shape so that it had a uniform white "outline" around the whole pickguard. It just bothers me that the point stretches all the way out to the binding which makes the non-matching shape much more apparent from a distance. Other than that, I love the look!

    I noticed a couple flaws in the binding, but that thick multi-ply binding is difficult to get perfect when they're built in a hurry as these probably are. The Alnico Classic pickups are trash. For $800+ Epiphones should come with Gibson USA pickups. I've purchased Korean Artec pickups for dirt cheap that sound way better (I have Alnico Classic Pros in a G400 Pro and they're very muddy). Epiphones look awesome from a few feet away, but not worth the price tag IMO. (Then again, new Gibsons aren't worth their price tag either).

    I dig it! It would go nicely with my J Mascis Jazzmaster. I have a thing for anodized guard, white guitars.

    Beautiful Axe. It's got the Gibson headstock which is very cool. Why can't the Epiphone Les Paul guitars also come with a Gibson shaped headstock? The Epiphone headstock design is a consistent deal breaker. That's how unappealing it is.

    im using a les paul studio as my death metal guitar on drop c tuning and 10-60 strings, it has active emg humbuckers, planning to get a lzzy hale explorer as my standart e tuning 9 gauge string guitar, does it need new strings new pickups or is it good to play in its stock form

    I don’t think I could ever play a guitar shaped like that. I would bust my knee on the edge daily.

    Good review! Video request 1) where are they now for Egnater amps and Bugera amps? Neither has updated their website in years.....
