More like what about Ann and Nancy Wilson.
Very "Warm/Brown" tone going on!!!
@Otto Krackinfahrt bigger stars than the aforementioned. And who is Gary.
As soon as the distortion kicked in during your demo the guitar came to life.
Imo the guitar left me really neutral. It's unique enough to justify it's existence but it doesn't do anything to make me love it or hate it. If this guitar were a rating, it be 5/10
It stays in tune there is no angle to the strings behind the nut. The strings go straight through the nut to the tuning peg. Allowing the string to return to its length and not get caught on the nut making the notes sharp and out of tune.
If you wondered that's why the three and three gibson headstock has problems staying in tune on the D and G strings. And the reason explorers don't stay in tune hint it's the hockey stick headstock. The angle of the strings after the nut.
Ok
@@bizbizley Honestly it's just a shallow look thing for me. I know your not supposed to judge a book by its cover but books have covers for a reason.
@@frippfink I personally like it. She didn't design the guitar in an interview she said she was wanting her guitars to stay in tune more consistently. Gibson worked with her to make that happen. She said they just gave it to her and she liked it's look and the fact it had superior tuning stability.
That 3 and 3 and hockey stick design don't stay in tune I would know. Have one SG three Les Paul's and a ESP pre law suit explorer. So it looks and plays like a like a gibby without the pick guard and the selector switch is in a different place. The LP and SG the A, D, G, and B string are always a little sharp or flat after playing the guitars. The explorer the only strings close to 440 A after playing it is the low E string and they it's not in tune everything else goes sharp.
8:42, extra tight output jack, many times that is caused by one of the output wires jammed between the body wood and the spring tip connector.
If you ever have a jack that is extra tight your should open it up and inspect the wires.
Sounds Legit. 😉
He's not wrong, it's an issue I've run into and fixed easily by doing as H.K. says. It's simple logic
Yep, all you need to do most of the time is rotate the jack a bit to get clearance.
my custom. I need to check thanks for the info
Especially true with Gibson where no one gives a shit about quality control anyways.
I picked one up a couple months back, American Musical Supply had a special on them, I got it for $2099, I couldn't help myself. I wasn't sure about the Firebird headstock, but it makes for a straight string pull. I do a lot of bending in my style and it stays in tune great. I haven't seen any QC issues, it is very well balanced and it sounds huge with some gain, and yes it is very red! The Pup's are hot and dark, not usually my preference. I may swap them for some Duncans but I will give it some time to decide, they do a mean Rev Willy tone though.. Overall I am VERY happy with it, and for the price it was a steal!!!
The headstock will probably give you better string pull
A reverse headstock would have worked on this guitar. The non reverse doesn't work for me personally. IMHO
Hi guys, I watch the show every day from Glasgow, Scotland and it’s a good way to start the day with my cuppa.
I don’t play guitar, but I live for rock music and appreciate a cool guitar and bass.
I have learned a lot about guitars since watching Trogly, but what strikes me every time is the flaws on almost every new Gibson guitar that is reviewed. Trogly just seems to accept that scratches, dings, poor router work, flat paint, tooling marks are “just Gibson” and the customer just has to accept it. I find that a very odd stance to be honest. Would anyone “just accept” an expensive dining table with the same issues, or a new car with paint defects? 🤷🏻♂️
I get that we can all be brand loyal, but I have to say after 6 months of watching every video ( and some older videos) I feel that Trogly lets Gibson off the hook by not really calling them out on their poor finishing. For £3000, I’d want any item I purchased to be in mint condition, or I’d be buying from another maker who could deliver what I expect as a consumer.
Just my observation from across the pond, please don’t get all aggressive on my ass. ( if the comment actually gets read). 😂
Ps. I understand that the instrument is to be played and will get marked, but that is for the owner to do and enjoy..It should be flawless out of the case and ready for those battle scars..
Anyway, all the best from Scotland. Love the show. 🤘⭐️🤘
Hello Glasgow!!! Yeah I couldn't agree more. I love Trogly and all his videos even though I hate Gibson's with a passion (aside from the SG). They always seem to have some kind of finish issues if not the classic tuning issues they've been known for, for literally decades at this point. Not too mention the week joint at the headstock... I don't understand how they're still able to charge so much for their "guitars" when they're consistently flawed in some way. Yet people still waste money on them... Just proves that brand loyalty causes blindness. As for myself I'll stick with my PRS' I've never had an issue with ANY guitar from PRS. Not saying they're perfect but they darn sure wouldn't let crap like this slide out the door for that amount of money...
Just leads me to believe that the Gibson Custom Shop is an absolute bad joke and my money is better spent elsewhere. If anyone who reads this is a Gibson fan boy no disrespect you do you and I'll do me!
You are very right. Especially when you consider how perfectly crafted the competitor's guitars are. You can get a beautifully crafted Japan made Ibanez for less then 1000$ with not the slightest flaw making those Gibsons look like the budget quality guitars that they are. I would only play Gibson if they'd endorse me. It's actually quite easy to get if you play enough shows a year because Gibson seem to lack musicians who are willing to use their instruments on stage (for a reason).
@@SxSxG666 couldn't agree more!!!
@Otto Krackinfahrt Have a good weekend. 😂😂😂
Personally I like Samantha Fish's "Fishcaster" Made by Delaney.
It finally happened! I've been a Troglydyte for a long time and finally he tested the middle pickup position without saying "just for fun"!
I saw this on Sweetwater a few days ago and this has to be the most beautiful guitar I’ve seen
I am loving the non-reverse head stock. it looks great and works so well. it looks like it belongs and looks better than the original Imo
Finally it took 50 years to turn that freaking thing around.
They've had non-reverse headstocks since the non-reverse 1965 Firebirds, great to see them on an explorer though.
@@thenameless3271 yeah no kidding. I'm talking about the Non-reverse on the Explorer
Agreed
Love the headstock. I'm not familiar with Hale's music, but they definitely know how to design some badass explorers.
I would love to see a firebird body with a reverse hockey stick headstock. Think that would be interesting.
Oh my good. Those toolmarks on fretboard edges where they level the bindings. Seems that Gibson really does not care.
They really don’t, making some plastic smooth is too difficult it seems.
Hey wait a second, I’m waiting for a regular antique natural explorer. Now I know why they are delayed. They were busy building these. I also ordered from sweet water.
I just got one, thrilled with it! heavier tones better to me than a Les Paul and SG in the shop
It's never uncommon to see a scuff mark in a lacquer finish. You know that. You just enjoy playing to the QC crowd.
He should do when they are asking for thousands of dollars for a sub standard piss poor novelty guitar.
@Otto Krackinfahrt anything that screams bro
I don't know about the Rickenbacker basses. But the Rickenbacker guitars are wall hangers at best.
I respect Gibson for continuing to use lacquer. The problem is the uneducated people that don't understand that finish.
At that price it should be better
I had a version of this with an explorer body and a proper firebird V (banjo tuners, 1963 style ) neck from an Ibanez firebird.
I still have some of the parts
I wish it didn’t have dot inlays. Any other shape other than fits would work for me.
agree w/u had too many cheap dots
Interesting in relation to some of the qc issues. I have seen people kick off about budget guitars having similar issues so I can only imagine the firestorm that will happen if those issues are rampant with a guitar at this price.
For some reason it's a huge issue to people on the budget brands and they swear up & down that said brands are pieces of sh¡t bc of it but they have no issues forgiving Gibson for it even tho the standard is set higher and they cost 3X or more than the budgets. Really goes to show you how people are so swayed by the name on a headstock.
@@_dmfd exactly.
Love what you do Trog. Love you huge knowledge of Gibsons I got three now and am slowly learning to okay. I also have put some kits together as u enjoy painting
Wow Congrats Trog! I didn't know you had any Slayer in you. Impressed!
Glen's Mustaine V video and your Firebird seems like Gibson really needs to overhaul their paint department in my opinion. Hey Ola's natural finish came out okay though?
IMO - they missed the mark by NOT making it a reverse head stock/straight pull .. 'banjo' style tuners.
100%
Or Steinberger gearless tuners so it wouldn’t need a special case.
@@ArchieOnEarth yes .. that's what I meant.
I love those, have them on ALL my guitars :)
That would look terrible.
Actually I found the new Rob Scallons guitars from Shecter to be interesting. If a Firebird and a Stratocaster and an Iceman had a love child that would be Rob’s guitar. The fan frets and the multi scale strings plus they have 6,7,& 8 string versions.
It is just a Superstrat with neck thru construction and a slightly beveled headstock, i can't see any resemblance to a firebird or an Iceman...
@@riffrigerator666 Doesn’t the Firebird have neck through construction? Basically Rob’s is a Firebird with Stratocaster wings, and with a neck that has a headstock that look similar to Ibanez without being lawsuit worthy.
@@normanshute7162 yes the firebird is neck through, but it has a embossed stripe in the Body, this does not, it is just not coloured, the headstock shape is just a mondernized version of bis old chapman version with bevels. Still a normal superstrat with humbuckers.
Lzzy scares me and Halestorm sound too aggressive for my taste 😆 But the guitar itself is really cool! 😀👍 But even my $75 2nd-hand 'Legacy' brand Strat copy has better pick-up cavities!! 😏
Why do the cavities matter so much? How often do you look at them? Why is that the thing people focus on?
@@kirkwilson6229 - I just reckon that one should be able to expect great craftmanship in *all* aspects at such a high price level, including the cavities; Especially when it's obviously possible even for manufacturers of affordable guitars to route them out tidily!
I just bought the last one they had today at Gibson in Nashville. The sound….rippin. The RED….hits you in the face. Love it.
Ric Emmett of Triumph also is known for having a white double neck SG. and he can flat out play it.
This one looks a bit like my first bass I bought in 1989.A cheap Condor explorer with a P bass maple neck and headstock.
And Trogly,is there something with the grounding within the Marshall because it looks(or sounds) like you have more apparent groundbuzz.
Not in all guitars but some. Like a while ago you had one that had lots of buzz and also with this one.
I know that my peavey bass amp has that too and I'm to lazy to fix that. The problem I have is a known one: A screw inside the amp has too much paint on it so it doesn't make contact with the grounding inside of the amp. I'm just too lazy to fix it because it means I have to unscrew the whole amp and tighten that one screw.
It sounds really muddy on clean but kills it with distortion I wonder if regular 70s Explorers sound like this
I like the red and black with the gold hardware
I'm in the camp that thinks this guitar is unworthy of the "bird" distinction. They could have made it neck though body with the center step or thinner body or given it a bound fretboard with trapezoid inlays or even mini-humbuckers (3 would be cool). $2800 for an Explorer with a different headstock, no thanks. I prefer the original headstock anyway.
Like the original headstock better.
exatly not just that, the previous Lizzy Hale was 2299.99 and it came with all that, the trapezoid inalys, the custom shop appointments like triple bound body. This one looks very basic and is almost 3K and that heastcok tho.
at least this one will stay in tune.
I can't justify that much for a name like Gibson . The PRS I could get for that coin would blow any Gibson away . And they stay with n tune
Let's put the most breaking headstock in Gibson's history on an already perfect guitar! Honestly the firebird headstock does give a little more resonance. Not worth the liability though.
I got to watch Halestorm side stage at Rock On the Range back in 2014 or so. And I love the Slayer riff as well!
That would be a great base guitar for a St. Louis Cardinals theme. 😎
Or maybe Baltimore Orioles 🤔
Love it! The yellow really sets the red off
Your playing is getting better 🤘🤘
I like the Explorer body / Firebird headstock combination, but those yellow inlays really bug me.
Doesn't sweetwater catch them flaws on their 55 point inspection?
i work at guitar center and i just placed my order tonight it's my first explorer and im so excited
I love it so so so much
Did you notice the trust rod cover is in the shape of a bird 😎
The Slayer had me head banging ahaha
Ssssslllaaaaaaaaayyyyeeeeerrrrrrr!
Had to do it. Forever hail Jeff and Kerry.
the straight string pull no doubt helps with tuning stability.
The bridge pickup clean sounded hollow the middle was good as was the neck when you juiced it they weren't bad the bridge picked up a bit. But as a guitar I think it would look better with the reversed head stock. Or even with the flying V head stock that would be interesting. The color certainly pops. But is this something most could live without I'd say yes.
I still want to see a firebird reverse body non reverse headstock. I like reflecting inlays. They glow with the lighting .
Great playing, Austin!
'Cardinal Red' is the perfect description for that shade of red.
I like the look of this, particularly the red gold black combo. but not the sound that I am looking for.
Finally a case I can fit my Ken Lawrence inspired Explorer with a Firebird headstock on it. But I also added a Fender scale length, so it still might end up to be to long for this case.
Regards,
Etna.
P.S.: The white custom one is still my favorite!
D'you think Gibson might've used a Pure Tone 4-contact-point jack socket? Might account for the tightness when plugging the jack in.
Is it headstock heavy or does it feel quite well balanced?
holy shit that headstock is somehow even more hideous, on an explorer body. I honestly did not think that was possible.
Was hoping for a more "Birdy"/rounded look a la the Jackson Kelly
L'zzy said she wanted better tuning stability in an interview. Being an explorer player I can tell you you will learn how to tune if you own one. That damn hockey stick headstock. The firebird headstock all the strings go straight through to the tuning pegs. No break angle so the strings like back through that nut to their original length and stay in tune not making the string go out of tune sharp.
Are the frets gold colored or are they the EVO gold material that’s harder than nickel but not quite stainless steel?
Try the padded input
-usually #2- if the amp has one.
I didn't like the headstock at first but it is surely growing on me and I am loving it
Great job Trogly, love the guitar!
Nice ... and I've seen he unveil it she is an amazing woman and artist....
I do have a question for ya? When you put the pickups back in do you put them back to stock or just put them like they came out?
Trogly, we seem to have a pretty good scammer on your comments. Unless it's you lolol
As soon as there’s an Epiphone version I’m pulling the trigger. Been wanting an Explorer with the Firebird headstock
I'm honestly conflicted because I love the explorer purely for what it is,slightly out there but not too crazy. This to me,pushes it a little further out of what my comfort zone would be,which makes me want to try one of these. I prefer higher output pickups, but I play metal so that has a part to play to it. Now if they had made these like a normal explorer,it would be a must have with that color. Other than that it's a pretty cool guitar. If they do make Epiphone versions of it,I hope they make it in this red color, otherwise it would be a pass for me.
Ditto my friend. 😉
red and black pickups or all red would looks sweet with the black pick guard
I hate that Gibson are killing this off. I absolutely love the look and have a demo unit coming for my channel while I can still get my hands on one.
Lizzy Hales' double neck has a regular 6-string and a baritone 6-string, instead of the typical 6/12-string double neck guitar combo.
I really like it. I would absolutely love one.
seems like there's a lot of sizzle on the line. I wonder if it's in the grounding, or the power conditioning? Not something I'm used to hearing on Trogly's videos.
Sounded like he was playing through his new-ish Marshall. With those hotter pickups backing off the pre-amp volume a bit would cure that sizzle you were hearing (I heard it too). Typically Austin uses either his new Marshall or a Fender Deluxe Reverb Reissue.
Would Love a Baritone version and
Bass version, though I my 2 main basses are Thunderbird , Korina Exployer Epiphone 2015 , on the back
of neck in INK 2015 circle with EPIPHONE going thru the center
With PERFORMANCE IS OUR PASSION 2016
With Gold Hardware
I've yet to see one bad Lzzy Hale signature guitar (Halestorm are also fantastic live
Their prices keep goin up and still new gibson management hasn’t addressed the fact that their QC has been going down since their 2019/early 2020 made guitars.
Gibson beeing Gibson
I have a couple 2020's and can attest they have fantastic quality. Sad to see this happening again.
2019 and 2020 was when they started building better guitars after the earlier years. Not sure what you mean. But okay.
@@216trixie I’m saying if we compare a 2019 made new gibson model to a 2021 and 2022 made models, you will see a drop in factory QC. And it’s sad because an upgrade in QC is what we started to expect from the new management after a great 2019 and 2020 start
@@MikeE- how many of the new Gibson's do you own Mike. You sound like an expert. Or are you hanging out at Guitar Center.
When is Dave going to get the reverse explorer headstock, 25.5 inch, 24 fret explorer?
I would definitely buy an Epiphone Lizzy Hale baritone Explorer if they ever make one. I love baritone guitars.
I just ordered mine and received it, why does mine say "Made in USA" at the beginning of the serial number towards the front of the back of the headstock? is it an early model or is it just a mix up?
Trogley busting out some Slayer! Nice!
That headstock on a explorer is nightmare fuel
I still think my idea Firesplorer was better.
Anyway, mixed feelings about this. I think the Firebird headstock is cool, although like others I would rather it was reverse, with a stepped face and banjo tuners. Between that and the QC issues it reinforces my "wait for an Epiphone version" stance.
The pickup choice is interesting; Lzzy's original white custom shop explorer supposedly has 496R and 500T pickups. So I thought it odd that the series production version had more vintage output pups. It's the one thing I definitely want to upgrade on my Epi Explorer.
But OTOH if an Epi version of this comes at the right price with hot pickups...
Reflective mirror Finnish yellow is what the rest of us call........ GOLD..
Not like this.
I think Trogley should have decals made up. Stick em under the pickguards of every guitar he buys and sells. Nice lil surprise to whom ever finds them in the future. Imagine you buy a guitar, you check everything out and find it was one used on the show!
The Firebird headstock (reverse and non) should be used on more guitars, though a “V-Bird” (“Bird-V”?) might require a bigger case to fit the headstock. 😂
Double unpopular opinion here:
1. I actually kinda like the neck with the body, it almost looks cartoonish, in a good way.
2. I do NOT like those fret inlays.
The Firebird headstock make any guitar look 50% cooler. Not sure about the yellow mirror inlays, red would make more sense. It would work the model in black&crhome too.
It's fricking great.
will this be a limited edition run ???? any thoughts....
I was curious about the neck carve you measured .87-1.0 which is not a slim taper. So I checked with Gibson and they said the neck thickness is on average .80-.90 which is indeed slim taper territory. Just curious as to why yours was different…
I like it, reminds me of an old corvette
I like it ! Allen collins would appreciate this as he only seemed to enjiy firebirds and explorers
That $2800 hum is outstanding 🙄
Gibson HumLover Pickup
I personally am neutral as far as the firebird headstock on it goes. I’m more of a purist when it comes to explorers, not that I own one (yet). I like the hockey stick headstock more personally. I think it would have been cooler to do it like her last signature, with black binding and the regular headstock. I think it would have popped better and would have looked really cool. Personally, the only other guitar that works well with the bird headstock is the Trini Lopez 335 or the Dave Grohl DG-333. I’m also a huge fan of daves so I may be bias. Overall, I think it looks good, i’m just not a fan of the headstock.
I like the Firebird headstock on Hale's Explorer better than I like it on Bonamassa's Les Paul--but that's not saying very much.
I would like to thank you very much. I started playing guitar 3 years ago because of your show. Your excellent videos and wonderful tone demo have been an incredible resource for the guitar community. That is why it really sucks that I will not support or watch any more videos with Gibson, Kramer or Epiphone. The corporate greed and toxic culture of that company is more than I can stand anymore. Sueing people and putting them out of work for body designs when they themselves use designs (Les Paul, Theodore) that they "Stole" is the absolute meaning of the word scumbag. I wonder what Orba Wallace would say to Gibson about the single cut design? Who's next? ESP? Jackson? Schecter? Who owns the dreadnought body shape design? This legal precedent on body shapes is gonna open up a can of worms, That will not help the guitar community at all. How many more jobs are gonna get shipped out of the country because of this. While Gibson barely pays their employees a living wage. I will always be grateful to you for starting my love affair with the guitar and will stay subscribed, again thank you. But please do more non Gibson content. I'm not a fanboy but It still breaks my heart to say this. Fuck Gibson!
It’s odd to see the Gibson logo not on the truss rod cover of a Firebird headstock. I would have put Lzzy’s signature on the nose of the headstock (or the back) and left the Gibson logo in its traditional spot.
like it but im not into the headstock at all, i guess im a bit of an explorer purest. like the color tho.
You know the white double neck is a regular six on top and a baritone neck on bottom. So while it may look similar, still quite a bit different from its 6/12 string doubleneck cousins
All the people whining about imperfections on a nitro finish will probably lose their minds if they ever realize those finishes will age and be even more “imperfect.” This is a really cool guitar and I dig the inlays!
That guitar made you play different Trog 😃 Also how does gold fretwire wear?
Good paint.
i like explorer bodies, i like firebird headstocks. BUT THE EXPLORER HEADSTOCK IS SO GOOD THAT I TRIED PUTTING ONE ON MY STRAT. also, i may or may not be an explorer fanboy
I love Explorers and I love Firebirds and I love Strats, but that sounds god-awful. It sounds like you tried to make a Kramer.
Is a USA Explorer neck heavy?
I actually kind of like it; the FB headstock on an Explorer is crazy good!!
Thats not the Firebird headstock tho. Its crappy studio one
@@mikefloyd3152 That is a Non-Reverse Firebird headstock. The studio Firebirds use that headstock because its manufactured like a regular set-neck Gibson solid body and is less expensive to produce. The reverse Firebird headstocks require much more wood to start with and are more labor intensive to manufacture. They also add a lot of length and weight to that end of the guitar.
