Car Rigged with Illegal Natural Gas Tank Explodes While Refueling at Gas Station

- Surveillance footage from Brazil captured the moment half of his car disappeared in a split second. Allegedly, the Volkswagen was fitting with an illegal propane gas tank that was not compatible with the natural gas tank that the car was running on.
The gas tank on a volkswagen sedan exploded in a bizarre incident caught on camera in northeastern brazil on wednesday (March 18,2022), with officials confirming that an illegally installed fuel cylinder was responsible for the explosion.
The owner of the vehicle stopped to refuel the car with natural gas at a station in fortaleza, serra, on wednesday when an explosion tore the car apart.
The gas station camera showed the driver standing in front of the car while the attendant waited nearby for the fueling to complete.
Brazil’s National Union of Vehicle Inspection Companies told G1 that the car's gas tank explosion was caused by a “sequence of errors,' among them being that the gas cylinder was illegally installed by the driver
moments later, the gas tank exploded and the rear of the car was destroyed.
The car owner can be seen running away from the explosion, while the station worker turned off the gas and avoided further devastation.
According to Brazilian news outlet G1, the gas cylinder landed about 200 feet from the gas station, damaged a wall and also struck a car in the area.
Officials said the gas station worker and the vehicle owner were not injured when the car’s gas tank exploded.
“The (owner) installed an irregular cylinder (gas tank), did not carry out the mandatory safety inspection,” agency director Marco Neves said. “And the gas station did not require the presentation of the inspection seal issued by one of the technical institutions accredited by INMETRO (National Institute of Metrology, Standardization, and Industrial Quality).”

Just think how much money the owner saved by installing the gas tank himself!
less than damage to car
😆...even better, now; 1/4 less weight!
Plus, it's a good thing he didn't get it inspected 'cuz it would fail inspection!
LoooooooLLL !!! ;-))
@@makantahi3731 There where I live, converting a car to propane gas for 100 000 km save about 10 000 US$ ant this is almost the price of the car. That on the footage was metane and you must be very strictly about the technical condition of the metane system. Especialy about the gas tanks. Here was destruction of the gas tanks. I think old tanks or defektive. Or used not certified tanks. Propane is more soft because of lower pressure - propane is under pressure 10 bar and the most bad gas tanks hold about 40 bar pressure before destruction. Metane is inder pressure 200 bar and the limit of the gas tanks is about 300. And in my opinion in our conditoon is that metane is only for working in taxi, for all other propane is better choise. The most disadvantage of metane is lower range- about 200 km with normal set of gas tanks. Propane nomal have 300-400 km range.
Kudos to the attendant..not running away but going back to turn off the gas..true hero
Just wait until they sell more hydrogen powered cars , pure h2 accidents !! In the vw cabriolet(also rabbits & sciroccos) the Bosch fuel injection lines eventually leak on the engine , and that makes quite a conversation , but h2 will look like the Hindenburg again
At least no ignition! Over here in Germany the LPG and CNG filling-stations are equipped with a so-called "Totmann-Taster". This, I think, could be translated like "dead-man-button". The filling process stops immediately after releasing the button, one has to push it down all the time during filling. If something happens and this person runs away by instincts, gas supply is interrupted: safety by design!

I still don’t get it. Wtf is a “natural gas tank”? Since when do cars use propane?
Totally confusing - this is in Euroland somewhere. in US there are few street vehicles running on meth, propane or butane. So for us seeing the hose going into the engine block super strange. So owner did some mods to his tank and poof! he chose poorly.

Well done Sir
As bad as that was, at least it didn’t also ignite. Daaaamn! 😳😱
I live in Brazil and I know that there are many cars running on natural gas, known as CNG. Many are not illegal, but there's a real risk of explosion during refueling. It's mandatory to exit the car, and the cylinder heats up during refueling. It's a sad adaptation that we in the third world have to make to our already simple and economical cars to make them even more economical due to the price of CNG. For example, everyone here in Brazil who has a 4.3 V6 Blazer or a Grand Cherokee runs on CNG. Older 6-cylinder gasoline trucks, all running on CNG. The fuel here is so expensive that even someone with a 1.0 L car, considered super economical, still goes and installs CNG. In this case, the car in the video is a Volkswagen Voyage 1.6, which is not a high-consumption car, on the contrary, but probably belongs to an Uber driver.
Copy that.
Thanks for the info ❤
The new definition of “getting your back blow out”
Insurance claim : It just went bang !!
My van (2013 Ford E350 xlt super duty) was fitted with four 5 gallon tanks by a licensed shop here in California. Total cost was $21,860 for the conversion. Tanks are due to expire in 2033. Plan to have two type four 20gge tanks installed with its safety valves put on in 6 years. I pay $2 per gallon and as low as $1.60. I live in California and found the conversion to be worth every penny and safe if done properly as the tanks have safety valves to prevent this very thing from happening. A trip from San Diego to Fresno cost me $63 dollars in a fully loaded van towing a trailer ....same trip was over $200 in my 03 Tahoe . dont cut corners and do things right.
Ps- cng tanks are filled to 3600psi at fueling stations. Thank goodness these folks made it out though im sure their ear drums suffered.
WOW, so expensive, I have done 3 X LPG conversions at they never cost more than $4000, you can buy a lot of petrol for $21,000 ! CNG has 200 Bar pressure and not to be messed with.
SkyCNG sells top of the line kits for $1,000
Cool
How long do you have to drive that van to recoup the 21 grand conversion?!? That's 140 trips to Fresno.
6.6 thousand gallons of gas seems like a really long break-even period, assuming comparable efficiency.

Imagine if the dude on the bicycle had passed that spot a moment earlier...
God’s Angels were there. Both men were unharmed.
The dummy driver installed an incompatible gas tank. Wonder if his insurance company will pay for this?
I saw God's angels all around the man and the owner....they were chasing the Devil away and singing Hallelujah......in Spanish and Portuguese because it happened in Brazil. I hung around for a while and the Archangel Michael turned up...a bit late I know...and was angry with the junior angels because, as he said, "If you had been a few seconds earlier you might have stopped that....now go and say 10 Hail Mary's." and off they all flew.
Angels..WOW. 😂😂😂
Great joke. Thanks for the humor.
He also installed the gas tank on the wrong end of the car.
That Volkswagen won't be taking any more voyages.
The owner knew his installation skills we're shit, hence why he wasn't sitting in it while refueling. Anyone could have died from the shrapnel of the blast.
Jail time is indeed necessary.
Poor guys. you can tell the attendant had hearing damage after that. This is my fear when companies say they want to go to hydrogen for power in cars. Hydrogen stores at a much higher pressure from what I've heard. If they take that route they need to have a way for water to convert to hydrogen on the fly so we only need to have water onboard.
Metal hydride storage is the way to safely contain hydrogen
This is GNV, natural gas.
Hydrogen - the next scam to keep us dependent on big companies and pay for th enew fuel! EVs- -total scam! But the real free energy technologies that were discovered and developed in the last century all have been suppressed and dozens of inventors were killed or died u nder very suspicious circumstances - as always, same in medicine with real healing modalities and technologies etc.! We coul d be off of fossile fuels for a very long time and not pay anything for the energy, Nikola Tesla was trying to do that and we know how that worked out! They shut him down! Many inventions and different approaches to free or almost free energy have been around for many decades and disappeared along with their makers due to aggressive threats, assassination or other methods. The same is true for real cancer cures and so many other ailments that are a major cash cow for the pharma demons! The entire sytem is rigged and infiltrated! And you can´t vore your ass out of this hell of a mess - only real world hands on action can change that!
So you want to use electricity to turn water into hydrogen inside the car, then turn that hydrogen back into electricity to power the car.
What you're describing is either a perpetual motion machine or the world's least efficient battery car.
If it was all propane that would have been much worse. I've seen 50psi of propane pressure blow a 40lb stainless steel collection pot top through the high pressure clamps, the idiot loosened the nut and gave it the space it needed to work it's magic (pressure will always follow the path of least resistance) luckily the hoses were connected because it blew off and nearly missed caving this man's skull in, he was lucky to only have a cut over his right eye that needed stitches..
Я двадцать лет езжу на пропане, это просто не возможно.
Freind of mine once thought it would be a laugh to bonk the top of a propane tank with a sledgehammer, long story short he lost his hearing for a week and a car across the road had a mangled propane tank embedded in the side of it.
This was CNG, it has 200 Bar of pressure! LPG or Propane is a pussy in comparison.
He definitely saved on gas ⛽️ 😂

How to go from 4,000 psi to zero in a fraction of a second.
That was probably under 200 psi, but compress propane is a liquid, but expands into a gas at atmos. pressure.
@@guytech7310 It was apparently natural gas, which is stored at much higher pressures reaching 3,600 psi. I had a natural gas powered van and that's about where it sits when full.
Hey bubba! You said those old air compressor tanks looked good on the outside right? "Yuuuup! Why Cletus?" Did you check the inside for rust? "Say what now?!"
Bearing in mind this is in Ceará, in a region of Brazil roughly analogous to the US Bible Belt - this is probably quite accurate. 😅

The kid on the bicycle was lucky. If it had exploded 3 seconds earlier he would have been just been passing by the side of it. The driver and attendant are both lucky and the owner didn't claim on his insurance for some reason. Imagine the loss adjuster looking it over and saying have you got any photos of it before it blew up.
The great things about this video...are that it appears no one was hurt...and that the insurance company won't pay on his claim (if he actually had insurance) once they find out the tank was illegally installed. Hope this guy learned his expensive lesson.
I would have thought the attendant would have recognized the home-made installation...and refused this customer in the first place.
What's funny is after this happened the guy is still getting calls regarding his extended warranty and is about to expire and they want to know if he wants to add more years to the policy.
The least the attendant could have done was clean the windshield, check the oil.
That's a pressure explosion, the homemade tank must of had bad welds or buddy didn't have a working gauge and the tank was already full. His setup was so bad, he must of thought he needed fuel when his car was running like shit. The world is just full of these people.
For it to blow like that im guessing he used the wrong type of gas cylinder for lower pressure gas like butane
.
Propane lpg is extremely high pressure
.
Like, 100x the pressure of butane gas
Not quite, yes LPG is high, but this was CNG which is 200 BAR, and sometimes deadly when messed around with.

Who refuels under the hood? He's lucky to not refuel from the back side like every other car.
Dont do that, kids.
This is why you must do research before trying to jerry rig any kind of high-energy system.
Propane tanks are designed for propane (who'da thunk?). They are rated to operate between 120 and 200 psi, depending on the ambient temperature. Natural gas tanks, on the other hand, operate at around *3600 psi* to store a comparable amount of energy for the same volume taken.
In other words, a propane tank will either store very little natural gas or it will explode if you try to make it store more.
Most propane tanks will safety vent at less than 2000 psi
What in tarnation
Yeah woops, CNG pressures are way higher than LPG !!!!
With all that gas just released around the pumps I would be moving away very quickly after hitting the button if able.
In a situation like this the gas pump should shut down instantly, it should not need someone to press a button.
Thats some bass there.
How are these considered safe when that’s what happens when their tanks fail? At least when a gasoline tank burns it doesn’t immediately explode.
