  • Legendary talk show host Larry King passed away earlier today at age 87. Among the huge collection of his interviews is this 1993 interview with then-Disney CEO Michael Eisner. We are pleased to present this restored video as a tribute to Mr. King.
    Larry and Michael discuss the upcoming American Teacher Awards airing on the Disney channel and the importance of education. They go onto discuss the financial trouble at EuroDisney, and the company's upcoming plans for Disney's America park near Manassas, Virginia.
    Callers from London and Copenhagen question Michael about locating EuroDisney in Paris, while callers from Orlando ask about the fate of Captain EO given allegations about Michael Jackson and the best way for front-line cast members to challenge untenable corporate policies.
    This is a great video time capsule of Disney in the early 90's and our viewers will be pleased to know the original commercials are included!

    Eisner was the best leader of the Disney outside of Walt Disney himself

    Wow the discussions back then were much more honest and natural vs prepared corporate speak

      Disney has not really done a good job adapting to new media gaining traction. They are not the force in gaming and the internet they think they are.

      Eisner was particularly good at that type of conversation, especially compared to Iger, who comes off very calculated and rehearsed (although articulate) in his interviews.

    I'll tell ya...I would take him back in an instant!
    Compared to Iger and Chapek, Eisner is Walt Disney reincarnated.
    And he was right about Disneyland Paris...it's one of the greatest of all Disney parks.

      Imagine Iger talking about world affairs and culture like Eisner. Iger is the REAL "hick"

      Eisner was a shrewd businessman who really did not give a flying fuck about any of his employees

      That’s what Disney needs: a shrewd businessman who does actually care about his employees.

      Its kind of insane that Euro Disneyland was made given they had based visitor numbers on how much Magic Kingdom gets per year. Euro Disneyland was a huge misstep and while Eisner is mainly to blame, because of his lack of understanding European culture and only wanting to hear what he wanted to hear during development, Frank Wells contributed to this massive oversight in the project.

      It’s interesting hearing his side of the story of his years at Disney when he went from hero to pariah to a (partial) redemption arc at the company that made *Bojack Horseman.*

    God I wish Disney’s America had happened. Haymarket is built up today with a highway through it anyways so the protests against the park didn’t stop development. It just prevented children in the DMV from being raised with a dream vacation destination.

      Interesting way of putting it. My grandmother was from Virginia and she was very much against this because she considered it an insult to the people who fought and died in the Civil War. To her, this was not some thing that Disney needed to be a part of. The South had its own way of mourning its dead, and they wanted to impose their way of doing things on us in a way they didn’t even in Florida. The pre-Eisner regimes seemed to understand thar better, frankly.

      I remember seeing Eisner on Larry King again later in the 1990s and talking about the Disney cruise line and how they couldn’t go to Cuba because the government wouldn’t let them because of the embargo.

    Eisner was the Best thing for WDW and the Company. If they ever make a movie about Michael Eisner, Will Ferrell would be the doppelganger to play him.

    Interesting interview. Does anyone know if Disney actually bought the land in Manassas? And if so, do they still own it?

    • @RAID5_Aesthetic
      @RAID5_Aesthetic Před 3 lety +7

      No. Local politicians opposed Disney saying that the ground was sacred Civil War history. Then the people that opposed Disney developed all that land and made millions upon millions. It's all McMansions...

    • @CSReed
      @CSReed Před rokem +3

      Disney bought the land successfully. The VA governor was all for the park. Local residents in haymarket were for the park. But people who didn’t even live in the county were super loud and continually harassed Disney until they sold the land. There’s a bunch of McMansions there now and a good course.
