Major takeaways: work longer hours than others. Learn more than others, spend time on reading and studying. Study the seniors of your company, what they like, do and do not. Basically devote yourself to that cause. 👌
Lead By Example Old news. Old corporate style. The world moves much faster these days. Guys like Gary V and other social media giants like Tim Ferriss are the complete opposite. Minimum levels of work combined with maximum effectiveness and strategy. Outsource as much as possible. 80/20 your business, business tasks, products, services, sales, marketing, customer service, and employees. Automate just about everything including business and personal taxes, business and personal investments. And take mini retirements, sabbaticals every six months. The learning process is accelerated when asking the right questions. A great guide for individuals is a book by Elaine Pofeldt, Million Dollar One Person Businesses. Check it out, get inspired, and learn the new way to faster success and happiness.
taoist40 You're wrong. I was born and raised in Los Angeles, majored in Film/Tv Prod. , used to work at WB. That hard work is the only way to make it still today. GRIPS today still have to do 400 hrs. of landscaping duty to even start their job. Your lazy ass couldn't handle it.

This man was a straight up hustler! He put the work in and what stood out to me the most is when he said he looks for people that don’t complain and don’t see hours. They just stay there working hard not even worried about the time or doing what we all mostly do which is check the time and say I can’t wait to go home. I have yet to reach that level and it’s a level I’m honestly striving so hard for!
Jonathan Torres Just don’t become a workaholic. That’s an extreme that many fall for and up losing everything.
Dear Tom, Is it possible if you can ask this guest to come on your program again and ask him more questions as everything he says is like a nugget of wisdom that we desperately need. I can't tell you how much your channel is helping me shape my personality and to find my lost drive back.
I love this because it stretched my mental model so far. I thought I was working long/hard/smart, but I'm not even in the same race as him. Watching this episode was the mental equivalent of someone running the first ever four minute mile. My frame of reference for the impossible just shifted. It's like Michael just grabbed the horizon, and moved it.
One of the best interviews on success I've come across. No substitute for HARD WORK! Thank you, Tom.
In my previous job I was like that: first to come, last to leave. Always ahead, knew inside and out how things work, what to do when there was a fu*k up, knew how to fix everything. I was always learning, while others were on FB and smoking outside. For almost 8 years I worked worked worked... then I decided to leave as I burnt out, got health problems from stress and my depression just got worse. Why did it happen? Because I had a boss who NEVER appreciated our work. I was called to the office because I didn't smile or someone said some made up story and I had to explain something that never happened.
This is exactly how you destroy people who are willing to work, have goals and ambitions. He was lucky he had someone who appreciated him. I wasn't and till today I suffer from my previous experiences.
My advice: if someone does NOT appreciate you - RUN AWAY as fast as you can! I was stupid and it was too late for me :(
I believed everything you said, till you said it was too late.
...and by the way when Tom asked what qualities he is looking for in people, he never said ;"I am looking for talented people"...He said...people who don't look for hours,curious,self-reliant, who don't put things til tomorrow, who don't complain, somebody who wants to make something of themselves better that they started"...all the leadership skills that can be learned. Talent not required.
I'm a long time listener to these now but first comment - LOVE every interview you do, how you make people open up and really dive into their success. What a humble guy and when he pulled out the Quest bar - classic!

if i could choose one mentor in the entire world, i would go for michael ovitz.
This one sure made an impact! Even though he had a lot of stories and wisdom to share, it was definitely the respect he showed you Tom that made the biggest impression. Here`s this highly successful individual, one of the most influental in a business filled with influental people, and he starts of by clearly showing respect for you Tom and what you have achieved, and he is being really sincere and so incredible humble. The Quest Bar-scene was a nice one to! He clearly had done his research to. So I think the lesson to be taken from this interview isnt necessarily from his answers, but the entire framing of the man. Definitely buying the book!
Tom his answer for your last question about what impact, is really a good one, people don't do things keeping impact in mind, rather they are driven by their internal needs and in that course the impact happens. That's a lot to take home. Loved this episode. Thank you both gentlemen.

Another great interview. I watched this one all the way through this time.
Most important concept I learned is you MUST to know your "why" to succeed in anything. Michael hints at it in the segment about the poor father and the rich father. Both produced successful business people. Their "whys" were different, but they both knew why they were driven to success. If you hunger for success, but have no "why" it will be very diffucult for you to reach your goals. When you know this reason, the long hours are easy, you never complain, you forget the clock, etc. Success just becomes natural. Know "why" you want to succeed before trying.... then and only then will you enjoy the journey, and inevitable success of your work.
This man is king!!!! Anyone else notice how he won tom over by pulling out that Quest bar! (Not that he needed to) the small things can be the big things... and they way Tom laughed put into context how the studio exec must have laughed when he said he could do the program in 10 weeks! This man is Brilliant! Wow!

I heard Mr.Michael in the later dialogue with You Tom, but smart YT channel served me this one recently and I am asking myself, how’s that I missed this THE VERY BEST episode since I know for Impact theory? I'm from Reseda, CA which is in the Valley, too (next to Van Nuys) I bet it was nice back then. I've since moved to TX (mini-Austin) /it's like what LA was back then. I majored in Film/TV Prod. and used to work at WB.
The was amazing.. I learned a lot. And it affirmed things I already do, or have done. It also showed me where I can be more aggressive and step my game up. However.. there was something missing for me.. How do you execute being kind while being aggressive? He spoke about why its important, and that it is important to back off sometimes.. but he did not define it, did not illustrate it with an example, and did not tell us how to execute it.
All in all, this was a Great one, and I will be watching this again very soon. Thank you so much .
I guess the answer is in his book. Like you, I found it one of the better interviews I've seen in a long time. I would imagine the book is just littered with the types of gems discussed here.

I think there’s a difference between being vulnerable and being transparent. To me vulnerability is a person not being in control of themselves no matter what it is, good or bad. Transparency is a person who can share even their failures or weaknesses and not feel as though they are at the mercy of another, they still maintain control of themselves.

I love your show and agree with hard work and long hours, especially when you work for yourself. However the exhausting expectations by employers to do more and more without compensation is lacking in respect. It's creates huge imbalances in life. Though agree this guy is amazing.

Warren is a voracious reader. I only wish I could spend as much time reading as he does. I read an entire book in 4 hours a month ago and after about 3 hours my head hurt. Although I retained most of what I read, because I'm looking for "big ideas" or "action steps", I would have to build that reading muscle up to be able to read like Warren does.
I saw my father completely unbalance his life with that approach. Happily I resolved the question before getting caught up with ambition, and have had just a moderately contented, moderately eventful (or uneventful, both are true) life. Its just not for everyone, nor does it always end well.

Angela .lv01 Find your passion and love what you do are not fads. They started way back in the 1800’s right around the industrial revolution. The problem is the misperception that passion and love does not involve hard work, long hours, or attention to detail. Many times, those who love what they do had sacrificed a lot of their other dreams. Martin Luther King sacrificed his privacy, “work” for pay, and his actual life because he had a Dream. Gandhi saved India by sacrificing his health, his personal relationships especially with his wife, and security because of his Dream to drive Britain out of India. Jesus preached because that was his calling, his passion. He died for his beliefs. He sacrificed his life for others to live the truth. Ordinary people live passionately because the sacrifices are worth it.

I have often reflected on how we don't get to choose or even know how history will perceive our choices and actions. You may be a good example. You may be a bad example. Either way, on purpose or not, we play our parts in the overall progress. ...especially as an artist/creative, we just have to show up and do the work, the best we can, and leave the judgement up to history.
“You can be anything as long as you work hard.” Dan Peña mentions this so we aren’t entitled.
You can have impact and STILL be driven out! 💯
You can see the terror in Mr. Ovitz face when Tom mentions references to his wife and relationships. I feel most definitely Mr. Ovitz had and may still have some great advice to give you on how not to maintain a healthy marriage and not sabotage it for success. Mindset It means do whatever it takes to reach your goal. Read The Ultimate Secret by Mike Hernacki. Small book, maybe 50 pages long, that describes the very thing Michael did.
