I think being 'unreasonable' in Sharma's context is the only way to stop the downward spiral of the dominant culture. When I mention a 'downward spiral', people often react by pointing to wealth creation and technological advancement. While those are true points, they're tangential to the point of a downward spiral. How dense does one have to be to equate wealth creation with ideals like attainment of virtue and, perhaps more relevantly, with ideals like an active opposition to vice?
I've been an unreasonable man since my mid-teen years. It's cost me plenty in this life. In the middle of the hardest moments of my life, I've questioned whether my unreasonableness has been 'worth it'. If 'worth' is defined by the dominant culture then, no, my stance has been in vain. But, if 'worth' is defined by the kind of person I want to be in the world, and by whether the things I stand for matter in the long run... then yes, the 'price' I've paid to take such a stand has been more than worth it.
Frankly, the only people who seem to understand what I just described are those who've never attained 'success' as measured by the dominant culture; or, who have attained it, but have had the privilege to walk away from it before it killed them.
Untapped human potential is amazing in its own right. What keeps it from manifesting more often than anything else -- at least in my life experience -- is how we selectively attend to that potential in the context of whether it's 'profitable' or whether it reflects favorably upon us per the criteria of the dominant culture. Think about it... we've got thousands of years of philosophical writings from some enormously capable minds, yet here we are, focused on wealth creation and success in the cultural sense while, for example, roughly 19,000 people around the world (age 18 and under) die *_every day_* from hunger and hunger-related complications. And this, when there's neither a shortage of food (America alone discards enough food to feed the entire planet's starving and malnourished population) nor a shortage of logistical capability to deliver that food where it needs to go. People often ask me, "Richard, who's going to pay for it", as if 'payment' was a necessary element in the equation. That's just one instance of how concerns over wealth/profit imposes murderous consequences on masses of people; there are several other 'big world problems' where this is also the main 'limiting factor'.
Tom, it's a sad indictment against the wealthiest people and nations on the planet that such unnecessary loss of life is a fact today, in 2019, and that so many people have been indoctrinated into believing that such loss of life is a morally acceptable 'collateral damage' of evolution. Nature has a lot to teach us about how to live sustainable on the planet. In contrast, we obliterate vasts swaths of nature not out of necessity, but out of a mindset that sincerely believes that it's a necessity to do so. How many indigenous people have been murdered in the process of eradicating vast forests? Countless. And who cares that this is the case enough to actually stop it? Seemingly too few given the existing structure for voicing grievances.
The 'reasonable man' looks around at the status quo and tries to play by the rules of the dominant culture. By those rules, we have environmental and human decimation. Yet so many aspire to 'win' at this 'game' of culture. Why? Terence McKenna is known for admonishing us that "culture is not your friend". And Derrick Jensen has laid out a compelling case that "civilization is not, and can never be, sustainable" in a talk he gave about his then-new book "Endgame". Who's paying attention to such admonition? Too few, if the status quo offers us any sort of compelling insight.
Anyway, I've written enough for one comment. Hope you found something useful in it. Taking the time to share my thoughts is the least I could do as a token of my appreciation for your CZcams content. Love your channel. Thanks for offering your content freely.

@Ariauna Durbin I had to think about this for a while. It's unreasonable for anyone to move one stone from one place to another. It goes for moving water, fire, and other forces of nature. But move enough of it, you start to change the landscape and then into something more. The "world" we live in comprises of the stories and empty truths we tell ourselves, are the reasons one stays in that kind of "world". It takes an unreasonable person to adapt their own "world" to themselves.

There's two quotes that knocked me back into my chair from Sharma: "The addiction to distraction is the death of creative production". Ever since can remember I have been distracted by something or someone. When I started eliminating the distractions from my Life, I saw creativity, little by little come back into focus.
"We lose respect from the promises that we make to ourselves" I CANNOT express how much this is true.
THIS quote to is the ass-end of not being disciplined. Doing the things your suppose to do, when you don't feel like doing them. And when you don't do those things, it hammers on your self esteem, self worth and reinforces who your trying to get away from. The fix for me? Doing the damn thing no matter how tired I am. If I half ass it, in which I have to be completely honest, I double up on that punk ass and regain consciousness!

I think Tom's question, or suggestion about not knowing how to want...stems from a gripping fear inside us...of not being enough...and we insulate ourselves by not dreaming at all...to avoid the feeling of failure and broken dreams... I think if we can know within ourselves...our value has zero relevance to the things, and those achievements society programs us to believe make us more or less worthy. Your value is instriscally immoveable by the very miracle of your existence... The biggest journey for me was learning the fear of not being enough and not wanting to dream...was far worse than actual experience of being vunerable and putting myself out their and sometimes failing. Before that knowledge, I had to understand first though, the truth about my individual value .
That was my journey from my self imposed defense of shame and worthiness by living in desperation permanently...to a living soul, that breathes and dreams and cherishes opportunities to take those risks, knowing failure is gonna be a probability, and certainty equally. I love your soul, its a furnace stoker for me.

what he was talking about was really valid and sound but to be honest I have not felt the energy from him that would infect me in good way.He sounded like egoistic person- me ,me me.Was afraid to share much , so people had to buy his book .I am fasting, I am this i am that,,,,there was nothing about serving to others that I would feel. And to be honest Tom in this interview felt the same I think. He looked less enthusiastic as in other episodes. The lessons thought are valuable and I am nobody to devalue his greatness.Just my humble observation. All episode through he reminded me Joe pesci From Home Alone , just golden tooth was absent )))

After watching this video, I learned that I should embrace the hateful comments because the more I am expose to it, the less sensitive I would become and fall victim to trolls.

Meh ...not crazy about this interview like most people on here are. It is getting repetitive but yet all of them think they are very unique lol. Fasting, ketogenic diet🙄 how the hell did we live for so long before this ketogenic diet. All the great people these people quote were not on ketogenic diet when they invented or created amazing things. For once I want to hear one of the guests to say that they just eat ‘normal’ good/healthy food and are not over weight.
He kept saying he was fasting while he wrote his latest book and then a minute later we find out it is just IF and he wants to try 36 hours next. Total exaggeration in his wording. I did 10 day water fast which I hated but frequently do 24 hour or 36 hour dry fast which I love. Not saying I am great or whatever but he totally think too highly of himself. And kept pitching his new book which I don’t think is doing as well as he thought it will.
I purchased the newer book by Joe Dispenza - Supernatural or whatever after he came on this show. One of the most painful books to read. He forcefully want to make that book textbook like or scientific.. it just got so pretentious and repetitive and full of fluff I could not finish it. Since then I started reading the 1star reviews before I waste my money on any of these books. So I just read a few 1star reviews on this 5am club and I believe them. Sorry for the rant but I hate to be a sycophant
