91 - Contests at Walt Disney World
For our main topic this month, we decided to dig into the always-present and always-sought-after contest connecting to Walt Disney World. If we all think back, I am sure you all have seen, heard of, or attempted to win some sort of contest either at Walt Disney World or at home trying to win a trip to WDW. JT takes the lead on this one and begins with the group telling us about a contest they have each won, in one form or another. To follow this up, we reached out to listeners and fans to see what they have won. We had lots of great responses, including the ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire: Play It!’ prizes that Jared supplied us to showcase at the various events we hold. Another fun one we heard about was Eric and the story about winning a Segway Scooter at EPCOT; amazing!
The mother of all prizes though, the infamous Night in the Castle during the Year of a Million Dreams. Everyone wanted this one and we tracked down a real person who actually won and spent the night in the castle. Ian joins us from Intercot (intercot.com/) , which we have a little history with, and gives us the entire story on how this all came to be. Brian gives us his experiences with this contest and we all chime in on how big of a promotion this was. Hearing how big of a deal this was, it is amazing nothing like this has happened in recent years for all the anniversaries.
For the next portion, we go through a massive assortment of contests, ads, promos, and even local contests that connect with Walt Disney World. Some of these contests are very obscure and interesting, which we take deep dives into. Overall, these things are an absolute blast to look back on and we hope we do most of them justice by discussing them in detail. We did not hit them all by any means, but we would like to hear from you. Have you won a contest that got you to WDW? Did you enter one and get the consolation prize? Either way, let us know! This was a fun episode and we hope you have enjoyed this journey with us through contests at Walt Disney World.

Been listening to a bunch of past episodes for the first time ever since they've been uploaded to CZcams! Love it. Hope you all are doing well. I know it is probably a good while away but I am looking forward to a Journey into Imagination episode and the Imageworks episodes. No doubt those will be great and well researched when they are ready. "You can't rush Creativity. It takes time to do these things right" Please take your time. I will be seated when it releases!

I don't remember the original ride but I remember that jumping fountain. I loved that as a kid I used to chase the water with my siblings until my parents were ready to move on But I wish I did remember the original for I only remember the first remake where they start by saying you didn't have imagination, it always made me so annoyed being told I didn't have imagination. Dreamfinder was so charming, he would of been somebody I would aspire to be if I were a kid, unlike the most boring scientist they have running it now.

The last time I went to Animal Kingdom, I made a bet with a friend on how many consecutive people we’d see with frowning faces in a row before seeing a happy one. I guessed 20. I won the bet as we saw 21 people in a row who looked miserable. Look around any money-grabbing Disney park. The happiest place on earth houses the miserable. Nobody is happy, especially the children. I loved Disneyland as a child of the 70’s.

Amazing footage! I love this. Safe to assume this was shot circa Late November to December 1983? Judging on the fact Horizons appears to have guests walking in and that split second shot of a Christmas Tree at EPCOT implying it is getting close to December (also the Magic Kingdom Tree). Either way love this footage. Thank you for posting and sharing and preserving memories that might have faded away. Love the Monorail POV. Man. Great times

Terminal computing of a form was used in schools in the early 2000's. It was called thin client. There was one expensive (robust) computer in the school and classes had 2-3 of the cheapest tech available. Not quite the same. but the class clients did none of the actual processing. The bigest pain where I worked was that the printer was in the school office and a student had to be sent to grab any printouts.

This is interesting; it's one of the first times Steve Whitmire voiced Kermit, and also one of the final times Richard Hunt voiced Janice before his death. This was also an early instance of Disney character costumes with articulated masks; another was Baloo and Fat Cat in "The Disney Afternoon: Plane Crazy" at that time. The way Gonzo's colored reminds me of Baby Gonzo from "Muppet Babies". I also like the caps he and Fozzie are wearing.

  • @therockexperiencewithmikeb8365

This film is 100% from 1978, as that was the only year that Mickey’s 50th Birthday Parade took place. It debuted on Jan 28, 1978. The Dumbo parade started on Jan 2, 1979. Based on the fact that many people are wearing long pants (and some can be seen holding jackets), while others are wearing shorts, I’d say this film is for either Spring 1978 or Fall 1978. There are no signs of anything holiday related so I’m guessing Spring 1978 (my guess Mar or April). But it’s definitely 1978.

WOW!!!! I am so hapy this video exists, and so happy that I got to go to this ride a few times when a super young kid. Only those who went to it can really re-imagine how it was to be there by watching this video. It unlocked so many old memories I had forgotten. As soon as they showed up in the video, I remembered exactly how those pieces were inside the full room, with all the immersive sounds, all the amazing art, and even the smells of each area! They should just re-do it how it was but with newer animatronics.... Bring back the dreamfinder, bring back the dream vehicle, bring back the dream port.... it was so amazing. I was literally in awe watching this video and validating that I was not being crazy of how amazing I remember this was.

It's like looking at a completely different world. The amount of care and attention to detail, focus on experiences like Main Street being an actual Main Street and not just two blocks of a giant gift shop, the live music all over the park, attractions that have no tie in to an "intellectual property" but were built by imagineers to give an immersive story and environment you could get no where else. Most of that has been or is being erased.
