I had a propane V4 because I worked at a factory in Bowling Green, Ohio that made street and factory floor sweepers and used this motor. Lots of parts on stock and whole engines.
Pure. I've had two 99s, four 900s (two currently), a 9-5 (a GM mess of a car and had GM buy it back).... I would give my eye teeth for this 96. It is in a word, beautiful.
Great engine. I remember a race car a friend of mine had . Saab v4 in it . he drove it to the race kicked ass and drove it home . dependable and fun to work on.
I just love the old Saabs. Have had a couple of OG 900:s, at the moment an -89 900i. Those cars are the freaking Chuck Norris of winter motoring. It doesn't matter how much there's sleet or snow or whatever crap on the road, it just goes through like a damn train. Not to mention the cold start abilities, -20 degrees and the thing just starts like it was the middle of the summer. And the heater, that's the greatest feature of them all. 5 minutes of driving and the cabin is as hot as a sauna.
I remember going out with my Dad on snowy days in the 70s, taking the SAAB for a spin. "Let's go see if we can get stuck!" We didn't get stuck very often. That car was crazy great for snow, and actually very economical, too. 40mpg at 58mph, hour after hour. Not in deep snow, of course.
I wanted to thank you for posting this video. I live in Spain -although have lived in the North of the US, with very similar climate- and still own my first Saab (of a sequence of 5), a 1991 900 -Turbo, purchased new, which we recently have rebuilt from scratch. Saabs are incredible cars. I felt like a personal loss the disappearance of the brand and just hope that it may revive in the end. I love also the 96 and the 99.
I grew up in these cars. They are fantastic in the snow, and I love them. I wish I could own one, but they're just too rare. But I have the next best thing, I think: an older Subaru Outback. It's cool, it's quirky, and it's great in the snow.
These early SAABs look like quite the sturdy vehicle... however a good friend had an 87 SAAB 900 that was nothing but an unreliable POS in constant need of repairs... I owned Volvo 140's and 240's from the late 80's until the mid 2000's and i have nothing but good things to say about them.
My very first car was a ' 67 Saab 96 V4. It was pawned to my dad for $20.00 USD and the owners never came back for it. I was 13 yrs old and my dad said I could have it if I got it running. Need I say more? : )
My 1970 96 v4 is standing, in the yard. I have used and abused her in 8 years, without she complained once, both in sommer and winter time. Now she s looking at my new girl, the sportcombi 1.8 t. and gets yealous....
Tyre size 155 x 15 I used 165 x 15 Avon Mud + Snow tyres in my 1972 V4 the 1st of very many SAAB's I've owned. I'd 11 older 96's at one time at home and neighbours drives! Fond menories very sad that GM decimated SAAB.
Cabin is warm, even in minus 20 degrees. However heating system is based on 1940s design which makes it bit old and weak compared to 1970s Saab 900 or Volvo 240.
The Saab was like 'Snow? What Snow?'
Underbar film.

Dang! I remember my grandparents SAAB 961970 exact same car! Thanks for posting!

Just got my 1972er on road after 15yrs .... lot a work got done but worth it....great Vid...love it! roll on next winter!
So many memories here because I commuted to college through Chicago winters in a faithful and sturdy, dark blue SAAB two-stroke 96, model year 1965.
nice, we got a snow winter in Denmark 2009, like yours my 96 started every morning and she did whatever I told her to
Wonderful CAR !!!!
This brings back memories of my childhood.... My grandmother owned a 96 v4 when I was about 3-5 years old... After the 96 she got a 99...
Great little cars. Everyone should have a drive in one. I lucked out and found a very solid and original one last year.

Great work. The 96 is my all time fav car! :)
What a great and evocative video! Poetry really . . .
And THIS , people of Britain, is how you drive in snow.
That thing is awesome!
It is actually a German engineered Ford engine, the Ford Tanus V4
Superb video! Do one again this winter!

Great stuff. What tyres did you use?

@McFishwood : The V4 engine came from Ford Germany, which makes you the ignorant
We're these front wheel drive?
Have much minus Celsiusa?
rullar hon fortfarande ?
Hi there i got two questions, one is that is the tire size for the saab 96 and is it possible to get brake master cylenders for these cars?
Tyre size 155 x 15 I used 165 x 15 Avon Mud + Snow tyres in my 1972 V4 the 1st of very many SAAB's I've owned. I'd 11 older 96's at one time at home and neighbours drives! Fond menories very sad that GM decimated SAAB.
han kör då inte fast! va e de för små mätare du har i bilen? förhoppningsvis så klarar sig SAAB, kunde dom inte göra lite fler såna här gammla? xD
i bet you dont see this abadonned at the side of the road
Does it actually get warm in the cabin? Or not
