I think it's weird how the smoke comes out even when the engine isn't even cranking. Miguel.

The smoke occurs because some cylinders burn some gas during startup but still not well enough to start the engine completely

Look at the Smoke: THIS indication at bad glow plugs. (No smoke!)

wow. my 86 turbo diesel jetta refuses to start without glowplugs, that sounds like one of them is workin. ive run my battery dead just trying to start.
