This was an absolutely brilliant review. Having done that journey myself (3 times total), you truly captured the essence of that generation of cars and their purpose. Cars were simple and so was Life ... no debt with no clear obligations. Most people should do a cross country trek, if only once. Great review! I just bought an '85 Celica GT-S Liftback! 47,500 miles, and as near perfect as you can imagine. Wish I could leave a picture - it's two-tone blue, blue cloth, and a 5-speed. What an attention getter - I have to leave extra time to get gas because someone always wants to see or talk about the car!
My father bought a new one in 1985 same color too. It had a sunroof as well. It was a stick shift, which I thought was awesome!!! Man, time flies !! Thanks for bringing me back to 1985..
I always love the shape of this era of Celica and Supra!!! Had my first car/ Celica in the late nineties, a black 1982 Celica GT with 160 ish km's. Didn't babied it drove it hard for a few years, than my buddy wanted the car so I sold it to him and he droved for a few more year till it hit over 300k kms when he switched up to a newer car. Amazingly, the engine didn't burn any oil and still sounds great, only thing that was done all this time we owned it was a clutch, all the brakes and rotors, and just regular oil and filters changes that's it. Zach is 100% right about the engine being BULLETPROOF!!! It's been awhile since I had a Celica, until 5 years ago I bought a mint green 1972 Celica ST in California all original Cali car from day 1. I can't believe the car is almost 50 years old and the styling still looks amazing!!! Lol
My father's good friend had one one these in black with a red interior. I can remember being in the backseat thinking it was the coolest car ever made. That era of Toyota was good.

So much fun to drive that car, with it's responsive little engine and pop up lights. Sadly, a Ford Ranger T-boned my at a light, and the car was a write off. I actually bent the steering wheel with my head. Might explain the loss of memory I suffer from today...or maybe it's just old age. Either way, if I were more mechanically inclined, I would have a Celica, Prelude, Talon, MR2, etc in my garage (I'd need a bigger garage of course). Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
I actually bought an 85 Camry w/ 5speed instead of the Celica GT 5 speed. I kinda regret that decision. You bought back a lot of memories Zack, Thanks!!
Loved these cars as a teenager, you're bang on Zack about the wheels and the notch back worked best on the Celica... that Supra though.. that straight 6 and a 5spd manual...pure perfection. There was a time a number of manufacturers offered a straight 6 and a manual gearbox, probably one of the best drivetrain match ups ever.

so cool, early 80's bussing tables. 2 waiter buds both bought the celica, and supra GTS. I'd be given rides after work to get back to Dt Toronto. Oh man what a car! I had a white gt hatchback, with the GTS wheels. I bought it with 150k, and rallied the piss out of it to 225k. Drove it to MT from VT going over 100mph in every state. I have a photo of it turning 200k at 100mph.
I miss my 89 Civic Si. Bought it used in 93. Fantastic car! Only reason that Celica is probably still around is because it never had to endure an Ontario winter and all the road salt that came with it, which just chewed through those 80's Japanese car panels in no time.
I don't get how you can get a cool sporty car and just stand and look at it. I've had my LC500 for just under 2 years and it already has 26000km on it, even if not driven in winter times. Just can't stop. If I just stand and look at it, it lasts for about 5 minutes and then I want to drive it. And that's what I do! The Celica is just amazing. Would probably do the same with it! I was more of a Prelude guy in the 80s, but try to find one today just like this Celica !!!!
Nice video again Zack. 👍 Brings back found memories cruising around with beautifull Sylvie. I used to own an ‘85 Toyota Corolla GT-S and it was such a beautiful and fun car to drive. Fast for the day with it’s high revving twin cam 1.6 engine that was just bullet proof. The car is gone ( so is Sylvie 😉) but the memories are forever 👍
I remember listening to you on Z95.3 while driving my 84 Corolla sedan. It was gutless and had a three speed auto transmission. The analog radio was fully mechanical yet you could recall all of six radio stations. Good times.
My sister bought one....she could not drive a manual...I taught her to drive it in about an hour. She had not been shown how to use hand brake and clutch...that made all the difference.
I don't remember the year i had but i loved it. It had a manual pump for my back and pop up lights. I bought used for $5000 from a dealer. I was told it was checked over head to toe, drove it to Miami and back. When i opened the hood the drive belt was on its last string. I blame myself for no checking. I got stopped for doing 90 and didn't realize it.
I had the Supra model for 3 months before it was stolen in a shopping center mall. It was red and looked great. As you said in your review, it was a good looking car. By the time the insurance wanted to replace the stolen Supra they were no longer available, it was the last year for this model and style of Celica. I got the next model of Celica that was like a bubble.
Motormouth: The Celica 4pot varied by one crucial difference than the Supra. The Supra used longer strut-towers/frame-rails,different fenders to more easily accomodate the 6pot (borrowed from the Crown/Cressida). And, more of the hard surface plastics of the regular Celica..... were covered with softtouch vinyl in the Supra. Friend from highschool still has her black 84 Supra which her dad bought for her Brandnew.....next to our other classmates Audi 5000, the Supra was the number 1 choice for roadtrips and cruising. Only complaint I had,5th gear should have been taller and 1st/2nd gear-ratio spacing was wacky.
Just bought a 1985 Toyota Celica GT-S convertible. Thought I had one of the same bought last year, yet it fell thru. In retrospect, nicer car and red colour is nicer than the former white one. They only made about 4500 of this rear wheel drive version of the convertible.
I remember when the streets of Vancouver were full of these kinds of 2 door hatches back in the day. Prelude, CRX, Pulsar, NX, 200SX, Scirocco...even the Americans had the Daytona and Lazer.
Even with a ton of miles on them they actually still drive decently. Those Notchback models also have a big trunk and with the rear seats folding down its quite practical.
I was just out of high school and on my way to Marine Corps boot camp in ‘85, didn’t have a chance to notice one until I made it to Camp Pendleton In SO-CAL., they were EVERYWHERE! I lusted after both the lower Celica as well as the Supra trims; my other favorite was the Datsun 280z. Ended up with a used Toyota Tercel SR 5 instead! 😂 By then, Datsun changed it’s name to the corporate one - Nissan, in the United States. Did the same happened in Canada, or was Nissan always used? Oh, well…the days of youth…😊
Our Australian weather has been kind to our 1 owner 84, 5 speed, an arrow straight unit in pristine condition but good to hear Canada also pronounces Celica the the correct way and not like the US as Silica lol
Had 2 of these but living on the east coast the rust pretty bad and there’s no replacement body parts and to get the front corner blinkers almost impossible to come by

I had an 1981 Celica GT and my wife an '82 which was the first year of the more angular body style. I had mine for 10 years and absolutely loved it!

Had an ‘85 Supra, drove it for years. Typical Toyota in those days, just changed the oil and rotated the tires, but not one minute of trouble ever.
I had a 91 and a 92 Nissan 240sx and ax as with super hicas. Fun cars! Both hatch manuals.

Good video, Zack. I remember when these were really common in Ontario. In profile, it looks quite similar to my old 84 Honda Accord hatchback.
