The screw should be slightly longer than the plug being used (in the case of the EVO 50mm plug the screw should be 55mm / 60 mm long) to protrude beyond the end of the plug - and the hole should be deeper. The idea is that the plug is then drawn towards the object you are hanging thus creating a tighter fixing.

Had an electrician round today to install cat 6a into loft. He drilled through our wall for our 9 year old house and said god they’re soft air block. He said normal fixings wouldn’t work and that I needed a ‘compound fixing’?? I’ve looked on screwfix etc. can’t find anything like and I’ve googled and CZcamsd lol. They’re dot and dab but the block seems really brittle. He cut out a socket and handed me a piece that I snapped like a digestive. 😮

Thanks. With lath and plaster try to find a stud to fix to with a wood screw. If you can’t, I would advise using plasterboard fixing such as toggle bolts

Hi. Thanks. The difference is that on a dot and dab wall you need to transfer the load of the item to the block behind the plasterboard and this needs to be done without the collapse of the plasterboard so cannot be achieved with a regular wall plug.

Great content as always! As someone living in a victorian house, I often drill into a solid brick wall but because the bricks and mortar are old, they will often crumble, or the drill will shoot off to a side because it hits a small stone in the mortar etc. I then need to select a new location and patch that hole, or my hole will be too big for the fixing because it crumbled. Very annoying. Do you have any tips on how to avoid this/ work around this?
Sharpest drill bits and take it easy and be as fastidious as you can.

Great video 👍 Ironically wall mounted TV's were mentioned on the news yesterday as there is an increasing problem with people suffering neck and back problems which they say is being caused by us all having our TV's mounted too high up on the wall and suggested they are mounted roughly at eye level when sitting down, I mean I haven't seen a TV on a Stand since 2003 😅.

What would you use to attach a TV bracket to insulated plasterboard? The corefix fittings can only span a 45mm gap between tv mount and masonry which is too short.

What fixings do you need if you're mounting directly onto a stud?
Just nit picking but would that switched fused spur not be feeding the double socket and it should be disconnected to check where the cable comes from.
When checking the cable visibly entered from behind via the back knock outs in the box. The spur was for something on the other side of the wall if I remember.
Great video. Only thing I would say is for plastic plugs you should not really use those kinds of gold self cutting screws as they are very prone to strip the inside of the plug. Use less aggressive silver screws.

Take a look at the weight of the tv and bracket and then look at the ratings of the fixings you intend to use 👍 thanks

Personally for a 70 inch TV I would rather locate the timber stud and use a 60mm x 6 or 8mm screw. Solid and won't budge once it's done.

One of the things people do incorrectly when putting a TV on a wall is to mount it too high.
For the best picture quality your eyes should be close to the same height as the centre of the screen as possible.
If you have to mount it high, it’s important to use a bracket where the TV can be tilted down

Would those hollow wall fixings be okay for a 50” tv that weighs about 18kg?
Excellent tutorial. Nobody wants a telly flying off the wall during the world cup final. Still don't understand why some people have it set so high up (except maybe in bedrooms and kitchens).
The centre of the screen should be horizontal with your eye-line. Unless you watch TV standing up, it doesn't make sense to have it closer to the ceiling than the floor.
If it's too high up and you're sitting down and the ceiling lights are on, you're likely to get a lot of glare off the screen, especially if the ceiling lights are spots or down-lights.
I think it became fashionable to put the TV up really high, because that's how pubs did it. It's not an ideal situation for domestic installations though.
The reason our TV in the living room is higher up than I would like is due to having small children and not wanting them to be able to touch it or bash it with toys! We have tilted it down though and I've got used to it.
@@Nyle95 Fair point. We're constantly cleaning grubby wee handprints off ours. I rarely get to watch anything on our telly, so I'm resigned to it being their telly now. My telly-time is hiding in the garage watching the Euros on my phone.

8:50 Dunno if it's been said in the comments here already, but that setting tool isn't needed at all. Nice to have, but a bit of a solution looking for a problem if you ask me.
These clever little expanding plasterboard wall anchors work by you tightening the screw and keep tightening too.
The 'extra' turns of the screwdriver are for expanding the fitting inside the wall so that it tightly grips the back of the plasterboard.

We have lath and plaster…… which method do we use?
I am trying to hang a 48" 15Kg OLED TV using a Perlesmith mount onto a chimney breast. It appears to be solid plaster (I could drill it without hammer action, and there was no "jump" indicating I went through a void). What fixings are best for this? You don't seem to cover it in your video so I thought it would be best to ask. It comes with 10mm concrete fixings which I don't think would be good for solid plaster.
Last one, the solid wall cos that's what it sounds like you got.

I'd suggest a very sharp, slightly smaller than you need drill bit and pay close attention when you drill.
These measures shd all cover the danger of lovely old soft bricks disintegrating a little as you drill. Good luck!
For a total beginner how do you tell which type of wall it is
Plasterboard stud sounds extremely hollow to the tap. Dot&Dab block or brick sounds hollow in some places but solid in others. Solid… it’s solid if you give it a tap.

How can you tell if a wall is dot and dab or plasterboard stud? Its an interior wall of a flat that sounds very hollow, makes me believe its plasterboard but not 100%
I actually have a question about something since I was just wondering myself and it's also something that I always seem to notice whenever people have their TVs mounted to the wall too. Usually, most TVs have inputs on either the back or the side of the TV, such as HDMI ports, USB ports, and a headphone jack port for headphones, and normally if anything is ever plugged in those ports, the cords and wires would be running down from the TV that way. However, I notice that when a lot of people have their TVs mounted to the wall, I usually don't see any wires or cords running down along the wall from the TVs. How exactly do people have devices plugged into the TVs without the cords running down like that? I was just curious myself since I just thought of asking.
The cables are hidden within the walls. When I renovated my house I ran cables from all the TVs to a central utility room. So each TV has no visible cables or devices connected to it.

Am a handyman. The problem I have is I don't know how to charge for the tv mount installation. How does the cost work out diyman? Any guidance??
You have to figure out what you need to charge to cover your daily running costs and profit. Everyone is different so hard to help you with this
What’s the difference between dot and dab and plaster board ?
Dot&dab is a solid wall with a plasterboard finish. The plasterboard is stuck to the block or brick with adhesive in ‘dabs’

What happens when you start drilling only to discover you have doubled up plasterboard?! Do you just proceed as if it’s a solid wall? Or use long wall plugs that bunch up beyond the extra thick plasterboard? (Send help…!)
In that scenario I would use a spring toggle fixing if there’s room behind the plaster board

what about uneven walls?
The only thing I’d add would be to drill a slightly smaller (pilot) hole in case the plaster etc crumbles away.
You then simply ream out to the size required, but great job though.

I think eight 8x50 coach bolts is overkill for a solid wall. No? A 65" telly is probably less than 20kg.
You can hang a standard 600x720 kitchen wall unit with door and fill it with 10kg of food on just four 4x30 screws without it budging. Total weight would be around 20-25kg.
The trick is to slightly undersize the drilled hole so the plug is really tight in there before the screw goes in. Another benefit is you wouldn't need an SDS drill for smaller holes.
Edit: I appreciate there's more of a pivot point stress with a telly compared to a kitchen wall unit, but still...

anyone that is mounting a sky glass tv, please beware they are a lot heavier than a standard tv, the smallest 43” model weights approximately 19kg

4:05 I will challenge the notion of TV height being a personal preference. Humans are “biologically constructed” to prefer looking slightly downwards most of the time. This is because the most relevant visual information for us is in the short and near distance on the ground in front of us. Looking up isn’t something we have needed to do very much. You can easily test this by noticing the strain you feel in your neck if you look up for an extended period.
Placing the TV high up should only be done if you use it primarily as a radio/audio device with just occasional glances at it.
On a side note that TV is way to small for that wall😂
