WOOOO-HOOOO, MAINE!!! I know you had a bummer of a day but I was clapping so loudly out here in Los Angeles & yelling, "Nahamsha made it to Maine!" (My neighbors were probably all, "What is a Nahamsha?") 🤣 Anyway, if I get this excited about the border of Maine what's gonna happen when you reach Katahdin?! I guess I'm gonna drive around SoCal, honkin' my horn, leanin' out the window, and shoutin', "NAHAMSHA CONQUERED KATAHDIN! NAHAMSHA CONQUERED KATAHDIN!" So, if you read about a crazy elder in a Jeep Patriot gettin' arrested for disturbing the peace in Cali, that would be me! 👏🥾🥾🔆

I played the Wordle everyday on the PCT until I officially lost service in the Sierras. I was able to find at least a minute of service every day in the desert lol.
The day I got to Maine was seriously one of the worst days on trail. Like you, I had rain and bugs and if I remember correctly, rock scramble after rock scramble. We made it like 12 miles in 12 hours. Maine is hard, you’re doing great.

I really enjoyed Gorham. When I was there(‘98) I stayed at a great hostel called The Barn. A B and B was attached. The Libby House.Libby was the very young daughter of the owners. They served pancakes each morning with blue berries picked on the AT. The Barn was the stable and carriage house at one time The owner and hostel manager met on the 😮AT in Ga so they knew how to run the hostel to welcome the hikers. There was also a family owned Italian restaurant and convenient store all within view of the hostel.

i remember the 1st time my brother and i hiked the 100 wilderness, we were going about 5-6 miles a day, stopping to look at every mushroom and trees and we were proud of ourselves, my backpack was like 40lb lol. For us, the views were always more important than the milage, but over the years we got faster, a lot faster lol. we have our favorite spots that thru hikers don't frequent like Crawford pond or lake nahmakanta
i do remember how miserable i felt walking soaking wet on our last day on that 1st trip, especially since it was mid October.

I can totally relate to this post. I've done the grid but on my 2015 Thru hike the whites and north was no fun. Just too friggin hard. I had it easy compare to you as it was a normal rain year and i hit them in August so no bugs. I only use bug spray 5 times that hike. I hiked from White Mtn Hostile (open then) to the shelter and it was brutal. I wipe out on the steep rock decent just before the shelter! Smell the roses means different things to different people and there is no right way or better way. I smelled while I hike as far as I could everyday! You're almost home, keep going! You're inspiring me to do it again next year at 65yo

You're correct about the various types of hikers: You seem to like the high mileage days and I, on the other hand, enjoy the process far more than the result. You know, the stop and smell the flowers approach - traveling is better than arriving kind of notion. But - when I was young, like you, my thinking was pretty much the same as yours. As I grew old(er), I began to realize that it's not a race to the finish, unless there are some sort of time constraints, and it(hiking)is not a competitive endeavor. "There is more to life than increasing its speed."(Mahatma Gandhi). Be well, stay safe.

The mom in me wants to lecture you about your constant junk food intake 😄
I mean seriously though, candy isnt really 'food', neither is soda for that matter, they are total crap for the body. I would love to see you pay more attention to actual nutrition. Water with the electrolytes, and the morning coffee bevs are good...just warch the sugar intake! It's a short-term energy burst but leaves you depleted. You are young but over time this WILL start to damage your body and can play out in different ways. Ok 'nutritional concerned mom' rant over 😅
You are a phenomenal and lovely young lady and thank you SO much for documenting this journey , it's an amazing experience for the rest of us who cant get out there! ❤

Studies have been done that support your views on diets of thru hikers.... Thru hikers do suffer long term disease because of their diet. Being 70 years old, candy and soda would never be taken on a hike... But cheese, pita bread, summer sausage eaten at midday would hold you til dinner/supper/.... sugar is quickly absorbed, but as you said puts you into spike modes that make you crave it more. Taylor is about the worst I've seen with sugar intake. I do fear her general health will suffer long term. I really don't think she is at fault for this, in the past 30 years all Americans have been fed diets rich in high fructose and corn by-products that make everything taste sweet...

WOW...Interesting comment about the views... IMO, it's the only reason to put yourself thru the physical grind... I guess I am blown away because you can just walk outside your home for 25 miles everyday and get more enjoyment or just do a treadmill. ... for me the views are what pays the bills... a spiritual connection to the great creator. Guess that explains all the hotel stays and time spent in towns. Hoping this mind set fades as you age, because NH offers trails and views no other place in the world does.

I'm excited to explore more of the Maine side of the white mountains this year, when the conditions are less wet, muggy, buggy and smoky. I admire your ability to hike the miles you do, with a positive attitude, despite all the challenges. I'm definitely a fair weather day hiker, though I've always had a deep love for the woods. I'll walk in the woods in almost any weather, even if it's just a mile, but I'm not motivated to hike an intense trail with wet rocks and no view.

I guess the question is if it’s NYT’s Wordle, there is also Hurdle that’s more advanced on USA Today. Play Wordle, play Hurdle.

So not trying to throw shade or anything. But I’ve watched you do this before. Did you go faster through the whites last time or did you just forget that your mileage would be cut in half through that section? I get being surprised the first time, but I guess I figured you would remember that it was hard the last time too.

It IS beautiful but quite rocky. Looks like it would be more difficult than Virginia to Pennsylvania to walk.

Hang in there Taylor. The rain 🌧 is certainly testing thru hikers limits this year. Too bad you couldn't recruit that swarm of dragonflies to clear the bugs ahead of you. Maine loves Nahamsha! ✌️
