He observed that by pressing on them at different pressures, different spots of color would appear in his vision. He healed with little damage. In another case, he locked himself in a dark chamber with only one small opening. He ended up going blind during that experiment, god knows what it was, and had to lock himself in that chamber for a week.

      ElucarioYEAH: But actually learning something means you have to have an interest in it at some point.
      Whenever you learn something that gets committed to memory and develops understanding of something that you previously didn't understand, it caught your interest. Even though it might've been imperceptible. (for instance: I used to involuntarily learn the lyrics to Britney Spears songs, despite the fact that I hate her music, but on some unconscious level they must have caught my interest somehow)
      Since the purpose of a school is to teach students, being able to make the students interested in the subject they're being taught should reasonably be considered pretty basic.
      If a videogame then manages to get someone interested in learning science to the point where they understand something they previously didn't, then you could say that the school failed... Or that video games and certain forms of entertainment can be a superior method of teaching some people... Which would yet again be true in my case, since english is a second language for me, and I learned almost nothing of it in school but mostly from watching films and television-series in english but with subtitles in my native tounge (and reading a shitload of books in english, as well as playing video games in english)
      The schools need to step up their game, because they are getting beat by the entertainment industry. :P

    What if the Gravity Gun is just a badass magnet?
    Let me elaborate, electrons make up EVERYTHING, and electrons can be manipulated magnetically. It's true that most materials dont interact with everyday magnets but that's only because we dont have a strong enough magnet to interact with the electrons in said objects and materials (like rubber tires) so what if the gravity gun just hyper magnetizes things, charges them with a specific magnetic structure, then briefly reverses the poles on its manipulating armature to repel the object away?
    SCIENCE!!

    • @banjofan647
      @banjofan647 Před 7 lety +4

      Yeah, that was my thought. Gravity Gun is probably just a name

    • @amirabudubai2279
      @amirabudubai2279 Před 7 lety +5

      The problem with this is that magnets pull on things differently based on the material. Also if you were to use something like that on a wire loop(electric motors, transformers, inductors which happen to be in almost all electronics) the result would be even more terrifying. It takes 10T to lift a frog, so lets say the gun is 100 times that strong or 1000T; the gun can go from attracting to repealing within a second so that means 2000T change in 1 second; take a transformer that has 1000 windings and .5m2(in reality a transformer has two coils one small one big, but we only need one for an example). This would give a voltage of (1000)(1000)(.5)/1=500,000 volts. And keep in mind that voltage wouldn't drop when when a current is drown from it like most high voltage sources(unless the mag field loses straighten).

    • @freezerounds
      @freezerounds Před 7 lety +5

      It IS called the Zero Point Energy Field Manipulator, so I don't think it's a magnet. It has something to do with zero point energy although i'm not exactly sure how.

    • @ChucksSEADnDEAD
      @ChucksSEADnDEAD Před 7 lety +2

      At that point the magnetic field would cause induction on everything, probably causing spontaneous combustions while also ripping the iron from your own red blood cells.
      I mean, if it's going to pull nonferrous material, ferrous material will certainly be attracted even more.

    • @Undy1
      @Undy1 Před 7 lety +7

      You're all focusing on the wrong thing, the gravity gun is called the Zero Point Energy Field Manipulator because it uses 'zero point energy' as its power source and it MANIPULATES FIELDS.
      From wiki: In physics, a field is a physical quantity that has a value for each point in space and time. It doesn't have to be the gravitational field either, gravity gun is just a fun name for the thing. It could manipulate the magnetic field, or the strong interaction field (both of which are insanely more strong than gravity).
      This would also explain why the GG can affect things only in front of it - if it can manipulate the field itself, it doesn't have to create perfectly spherical forces, it could for example change the field vectors on the very edge of an object, essentially aplying force to it.
      Now that I think of it, using the strong interaction wouldn't be a very good idea - whenever used, the GG would probably just rip apart the atomic bonds holding an object together.

    • @axipixel5811
      @axipixel5811 Před 7 lety +1

      Dylan Hull If you look at the dead zombie models, there's clearly a large hole in the top of the skull the headcrab breaks through with a "beak". It's also mentioned that Lamarr is "debeaked". The hole in one's torso is a mouth for eating, since the normal mouth is quite obviously covered up. Also, eventually, they mature or produce the Gonarchs that complete the life cycle. The ones seen in Half-Life 2 have been modified for combine use as weapons, which is why they do not mature in to later forms like those even occasionally seen in Black Mesa (Opposing Force)

    Dear Austin,
    I have a request for a SCIENCE! episode on Half-Life 2... again. I mean you did like a dozen episodes on Fallout 4 so...: What's that huge energy ball that is the power source of the Citadel. And by extention... how does it work? Is it plasma? Is it a fusion reactor? How did it get instable after Half Life 2? What are those yellow energy balls that float arround in the "energy pipes?" and that you shoot out of the rilfe? Are thsoe they connected? How is it controlled, since it has to be ultra hot if it is either plasma or a fusion reactor and melts everything it comes in contact with, but Gordon Freeman can just walk just next to it. How do you controll it? Magnetic field? What about the Heat then? How the fuck does it create a super portal to the combine homeworld after explosion? Did it create a dimenstional rift? a pseudo black hole of sorts? a wormhole? Did it even had to do with that? But if not, how was it created then? By the small yellow ones that float up there during the protal was established? yeah right, like those small yellow ones would have enaugh power to establish a interplanetary connection... do they? How can the portal still be active after the main power source of the Citadel blew up? btw. how much power would a plasmaball or a fusion ractor have to have to blow up city 17? And how the fuck did the rocket in Episode 2 disconnect the portals? And of corse how much energy does the core have?
    Sincerely,
    Souvereign

    Here's where's you're wrong: you assume the Gravity Gun creates a gravity field akin to a star a person or any blob you can reduce to a single point to simply the math.
    It's actually a switch that opens portals to set of massive objects arranged in such a way to form a linear (conical really) gravity pit right before the gun, allowing you to grab merely the things you point it at and not the entirety of space and time around you.
    Your science was okay, you just had to think with portals ;)

    • @businessburd2071
      @businessburd2071 Před 7 lety +5

      yes it is a conical force, but it's not necessarily a portal. The device itself just needs to stabilize itself to prevent the force from going elsewhere. Or this could be a case of misnomer as its called the zero point energy gun by other scientists, so it's more likely a vacuum pulling in objects.

      Well it's not like Xen crystals are magical devices on par with witchcraft, they just... punch holes in the fabric of space time every now and then. Which would explain how Gordon could scan carry that thing and /maybe/ negate his super cancer, but secondarily it might also exponentially increase his super cancer because the Xen Crystals may very well emit radiation all their own which could be harmless to the ranks of the Combine but absolutely feces rating to a Human.
      Secondarily; the Xen crystals also can't negate the sheer force the gun is excreting. Yes, maybe it could allow for the cone shape the Gravity Gun seems to utilize and probably totally negates power issues, but it cannot negate the sheer force produced in this well of gravity. Gravity is a universal concept, at least in our universe, and even if Gordon could manage to not get cancer, hold the gravity gun, and not suffer negative effects by using it whatsoever; you'll be tearing down every wall you face using it

As far as feasibility it's not possible now, but there are prototypes for things like active camouflage on tanks. It is unknown was the "Gravity-Gun" built within Combine Technologies or during Black Mesa. Being more Combin-ish fits the facts and lore, and another interesting fact: DoG carries the same gun in his right hand, that's not all. Dog's legs are Universal Union's Mech legs, like most parts from him. He was constructed both with human and, i think, mostly Combine technology. After "Seven-Hour War", Overworld Army left Earth, leaving a small division on it called "Overwatch", in most cases - Overwatch Transhuman Arm (OTA) These... things, must prove themselves to be a part of the Universal Union (Combine) So most of horrifying synths and mechs are not here. And "DoG" could be one of these things, which was picked up as a scrap after this war. "Resistance" rebuilt it and baym! - made a gravity gun on it's own, sine the first one WAS IN "DOG'S" HAND AS A WEAPON DURING THIS WAR. Did i mentioned the part where "Combine" are actually "Universal Union"... UNIVERSAL... Maybe they have their own laws of Physics in their, so called, "Overworld". Maybe they found a way to filter radiation inside this gun? As well as a knockback force, by sending props fly. Gravity Gun is described by Human Physics, but was that thing built by humans in a first place? Well, Half-Life has so many fucking sick shit, this is the finest of all of them...

      I didn't want to necropost, but I saw no one replied so, I remember a few years ago reading a cannon Portal comic, Lab Rat was the name I believe, and in one of the pages there was a gravity gun laying in one of the tables, that part of the comic happened before the black mesa incident, so I think its safe to assume the gravity gun doesn't have much to do with the combine, although the design could have been improved with combine tech, that is up to speculation.

      RiokuTheSlayer Wait what does relativity have to do with the composition of light? I though the generally accepted idea was that light is a photon, a discrete packet of electromagnetic energy, that exists as both a wave and particle. It was shown to behave like a wave by the double slit experiment, and a particle due to the photoelectric effect. I just don't see how this means relativity contradicts quantum physics? Does relativity say that light is just a particle, or just a wave but not both?

    One thing I don't understand is, how is it flinging the objects outwards? And why does the momentum not affect you?
    For every action, there's an equal opposite reaction, ergo, does that mean that the gravity gun absorbs the momentum that should be pushing you back??? Or do I misunderstand the physics of this.

    I have something to tell you. It's called "zero point energy manipulator". Gravity gun is just a nickname. It doesn't use gravity at all. Or else it would not be so directional. You just assumed that this works by normal gravity. That would be like saying that gravity plating of starship Enterprise is as heavy as moon. Of course it's not. It's a fictional gravity device. It doesn't follow the same rules you thought you learned at school.
    Let me give you a better explanation. Zero point energy or vacuum energy is minimum energy that a system can have. That energy is mostly in form of heat or virtual particles. It is the energy that keeps us from reaching temperature of absolute zero. It is also the energy that expand the space.
    According to science, this energy is either incredibly small or incredibly large. So, let's assume it's the latter. This means that zero point energy manipulator uses this energy force to turn it into motion. So the small vibrations of object become large vibrations in one direction. This is how gravity gun works. You're welcome

      @twolegmike Před 6 lety +20

      @skullzans Před 6 lety +24

      Plus you CAN see the zero point's point on the gravity gun too if you're not seeing it from FPP(First Person Perspective), so that helps. Plus It's so easily notable that this thing stabilizes itself via containment field(Look at its design, it really points to "Containment".
      There is clearly a very strong invisible barrier keeping it in place and with activation a small "Hole" in the
      containment is made, as upon usage it suddenly "glows" and only pulls in from the front or close sides, As well as this, dark energy is noted to be a force of expansion, correct?
      So imagine this, the combine use dark energy to scatter the structure of specified objects to "clean" a person of weapons, but when the gravity gun is hit by it, IT, being a HEAVILY durable containment field and form suddenly takes in dark energy, and the system is put to its limits... The roiling dark energy is trying to escape, and it does every time you use the gun, as the energy from the zero point does as well, but it is far more violent. As you walk with it, you notice the containment field slightly breaking, leaving a small trail of dark energy leaking out(usually into a spire, where the energy containment field and supply are originating from), And every time you open the field tyo pick up a soldier they die instantly, dark energy sparks wreacking havoc on their systems, bearly not breaking them to dust or more...
      Thats my theory anyhow, and it explains alot, Do feel free to tell me if/where I am wrong.

      Flint Saraphali the stronger the magnetism, the farther it goes. And it is a bit obvious it isn't using magnetism due to the fact EVERYTHING you suck towards you travels at the same speed, no matter what, so maybe it is just using some kind of funneled vacuum, some kind of auto adjusting vacuum that started shooting and sucking air at the same time once an object gets too close. I have a lot of far fetched ideas.
