What’s great is all the things you notice on rewatch. There’s a scene where Chidi is working with Micheal to keep Eleanore there. Michael asked Chidi if he wanted to use chalk or dry erase marker. The look on Micheal’s face when he forced the choice on Chidi was golden. So many little things like that.

This show is the best argument ever for knowing from the beginning where your show is supposed to end (which the writers did). It allowed them to take HUGE swings in the middle. To me it mirrors real life. We often give people the benefit of the doubt-depending on who they are and their mannerism etc. And then don’t believe that people who are good manipulators are badly intended no matter their actions (the best way to judge someone’s motivations, in context, of course). It’s good to give people the benefit of the doubt in many situations. But those who need it often aren’t granted it because of frankly surface reasons and the opposite is true as well.

There's a quote from _Doctor Who_ (unfortunately in a DVD extra scene rather than an actual episode), that explains why this ancient powerful character always travels with young human companions, and it's a similar idea:
"I look at a star and it's just a big ball of burning gas, and I know how it began, I know how it ends. And I was probably there both times. You know, after a while, everything is just stuff. That's the problem: you make all of space and time your backyard what do you have? A backyard. But _you_ can see it. And when you see it, I see it!"

Michael's "evil laugh" was not in the script, it was improvised by Ted Danson during one of the takes, and they kept it in. And, partly due to Danson's talent and partly due to the context, for my money it's one of the most sinister laughs I've ever heard.

And it worked with the next sequence, when he's sulking and annoyed with Eleanor, because of where the ad break landed (that fade to black). He goes from amused to annoyed really fast, but they got away with it in the broadcast because of the length of the ad break!

    • @nathansnerdynook
      @nathansnerdynook Před 2 měsíci

@RobertJW I always interpreted it as, while he was disappointed for obvious reasons, part of him was genuinely impressed and thrilled that Eleanor figured it out. You can see it in Danson's performance leading up to the reveal. He's almost smiling as she lays it out. Big "look at you, this is awesome, you're almost there" energy. Which actually makes sense because the flashback subplot through the whole episode was about how Michael was trying to get everyone excited about his new idea, and nobody was. Who is the only person who is genuinely impressed by what he's done? Eleanor. Even though she is the victim of his deception, even though he underestimated them and she figured it out, she's like way to go, dog, this is some amazing work. She's the first & only one who gives him that validation. Makes sense it would make him happy, even as his plan falls apart.

Since you asked ("Be honest... did any of you figure it out before Eleanor...") - I said to my partner several episodes earlier "This place is awful, this isn't heaven, they're in hell!" But even so, I didn't anticipate that that was exactly what the scriptwriters were up to. I just figured they were so immersed in doing sitcom stuff, having the characters put each other in awkward cringeworthy situations and frustrating each other, that they'd dropped the ball on portraying the good place as even remotely desirable. So while the reveal certainly made me LOOK like an oracle for having said that, I can't take full credit.

  • @MarshaLove0723

It worked because we believed the story about it being Michael's first neighborhood, he wasn't supposed to be there with them and had made mistakes. We also came to believe that Chidi and Tahani belonged in the Good Place, so that's where they had to be.
Also, the demons we met were really good at the acting like good people. Seems like they had fun.
6:05 Yeah... 'Real Eleanor' shouldn't have known about the choice of two people.

Most shows, I can give a fairly extensive summary of the show without ruining it. This show, I can only discuss the first episode. Everything else is part of the well-crafted and well-paced plot. I had absolutely no idea about the twist the first time through, and also got chills at the reveal! My only nagging suspicion was that Tahani çan be condescending, but the show does a good job of convincing you she's good.
The show is brilliant. There are *so many* hints it's the bad place, but you can write them all off as either "it's Michael's first neighborhood", or "it's a sitcom, you just have to roll with some odd things that might not totally stand up to intense scrutiny".
    Some hints:
Michael kicked a dog into the sun. Michael gave Eleanor a paperclip shower. Michael told Chidi his book was unreadable. Michael told Chidi that if he wanted to spend eternity getting harsh feedback about his writing, Michael would help. Michael setting up Chidi to decide between 3 love interests.
The show knows exactly what it's doing, and does throughout all 4 seasons!

I've watched so many people react to this show and obviously watched this show many many many times...my thinking is the main reason why you don't consider it being the bad place is you really feel bad for Michael and you grow to love him. Really, it is hats off to the writers and the masterful Ted Danson. If you didn't legit feel bad for Michael from episode 2 on and didn't truly believe his panic and stress and freak outs the twist wouldn't have worked. Added to that the fact that after eleanor confesses, his stress became legit real, and that "mad scramble"

I'm interesting thing that I can finally talk about is trying to draw comparisons to Jean-Paul Sarte's No Exit, which is where we get the saying hell is other people. Even the text of that play is a very good base to draw comparisons to this first season. I also don't believe that drawing that comparison diminishes either at all because this was so wonderfully done adding extra layers and making that parallel that feels very obvious in retrospect such a twist.

The perfect example is that, when they shot the scene where Eleanor confesses in front of everyone, Michael's face is of shock, and then it cuts, but in this episode we get to see the complete shot where he acts shocked and then his head tilts slightly to the left in a slight frown of "ah, shit I didn't expect this". I was hoping you wouldn't go too hard on defending her. Because either way, if they thought you were telling them accurately about her character, or not, it risked pushing their thoughts in a possible direction where they'd question the accuracy of what the show was telling them.
The show, all by itself, shows her being absolutely awful at times, tragic at other times, and admirable at other points.

24:00 The reason why most people will not tell you about the show... is because basically it twists and turns and burns through story so fast that other sitcoms would like play out over years...
That they don't want to rob you of the experience. It is so so satisfying to watch the show with the dramatic irony of where it's going as well as watching the people who don't know ... go through it.

I've watched all of the reactions out there for the good place, and nobody has ever guessed the twist. People have come close, but the show throws in so many misdirects to explain away its many issues. So there's a lot of things that while you're watching season 1 you see as a plot hole, or you explain the issues away to yourself by saying It's Michael's first neighborhood and he made some mistakes, which turns out to be explained by the fact that it's not the good place. It is by far the best twist of any show I've ever watched for sure.

Y'know, I just realized how smart it was for the writers to introduce the idea that Michael had the ability to erase their memories right in the beginning of the show when he told Eleanor that they erase the memory of how you died for particularly embarrassing deaths. That way, when Michael tells Eleanor that he is going to erase all of their memories and start over again, it is not something completely new out of left field.

If you have time, I suggest you watch season 1 again. There are a few things, you will understand better, now you know the twist.
There is a few tricks they use to ensure, you don't fully figure it out. I think the best one is calling out Friends and the nature of sitcons. Something in sitcons don't really make sense, but you are not supposed to take them seriously because they sitcons. So if something doesn't really fit with the idea of this being the good place, this is because it is a sitcon, don't think too much about it.

You guys mentioned the cast knowing and hiding this twist all season but actually I believe only Kristen Bell and Ted Danson knew prior to the episode. There’s actually a video of the rest of the cast finding out about the twist while reading the script here on youtube.
Also, I thought it was worth mentioning that this is based off a real philosophical play called No Exit by Jean-Paul Sartre where a group of people are stuck together in the waiting room for hell before realizing that this is their torture and “hell is other people”. Michael Schur (the showrunner) is obviously very into philosophy (as seen already throughout the show) and decided to flip that play and its thesis on its head by having them help and care for each other. Pretty interesting stuff.

I have been WAITING for this episode!! We've all been dying to see your reaction to this! 😆🤣
When I first saw this, when Michael started his evil laugh, I literally shrank back in my seat, I was so shocked! It was hilarious. I love Ted Danson too, so I never saw that coming. I was like, what? No. WHAT?! Nooooo. WHAT????!!! 🤣🤣🤣 My brain was broken. I was like, what the hell is happening here? Which made me laugh, because I thought, "Well, that's appropriate. What the 'hell' is happening? It IS hell!" Lol.
And what's fantastic is, you just never see it coming! There are things that seemed weird to me upon first viewing, but they're so good at distracting you and throwing you off and taking your attention in a different direction that you totally forget what you were pondering. I remember when Vicky said she should go to the Bad Place because Chidi didn't love her, my thought was, "You literally just met him, like, a day or two ago! Give him time to get to know you, girl!" I thought it was weird and a little annoying, but like you I thought, okay, she's overly selfless, so maybe she thinks he should feel that way about her immediately or she doesn't belong there with him. But they immediately distract you with other things, so you dismiss it in your head and move on. But when you rewatch the first season, you start to see all the little weird things that were right in front of your face. And it's BRILLIANT.
Also, when I first saw this, I loved it, but I thought, "Oh no, they're just going to start all over again? From the beginning? Like it never happened?" Silly me. Yes, they are, but... count on the writers to continue to take you in places you don't see coming. Trust that you will not figure it out. And the twists will keep coming, in different ways. We're not going to spoil it for you -- you'll just have to trust in the writers and wait and see where it goes next! 😄 ENJOY!!

There really so many hints and clues. As you noted, Chidi didnt seem to have done anything positive enough to earn points, but its possible that teaching people how to be good could have got points. Many of the people were too good to be true - Real Eleanor most notably, some of the situations were clearly for comedic effect - the couple who came to stay being a marriage councillor and an expert on false identities, many others

I keep mentioning this when discussing the show, but to me it is just insane how well they hid all their foreshadowing of this twist across season 1. So many moments with Ted Danson where he does something nasty, or evil, or weird, and viewers (like me) do not catch on since it comes across as done for sitcom-typical humour. And another point on how stellar the writing is - in my opinion not even the best moment in the show, as amazing as it is.
As another note, I love that you two keep talking about the show constantly changing. Spot on, and very well put. And the writers aren't remotely done.

Now you guys REALLY have to think back on certain things. Like.... did you notice before now that (until this episode) we NEVER saw Michael outside the presence of one of the four humans. EVER.
If you thought this episode was crazy? Strap in. The next few will make your heads spin.
Oh. There actually ARE plenty of hints. But the show's magic is that it makes people dismiss them. I guessed this might be the bad place from Episode 2. But completely dismissed the idea, and even forgot about it, by episode 13. Now, at your leisure, off camera, rewatch the season. You'll pick up on SO many extra things.
Also... not a spoiler. But be aware that even the smallest detail, a single line of dialogue, a prop, anything... may show up again in a bigger way elsewhere in the show. Don't obsess over it, but if you think something familiar is said, appears, or happens... its probably because some other iteration DID.
Finally... and this is a biggie... We can now recommend that you look up the play "No Exit" by Jean-Paul Sartre. Mentioning it before this would have been a sin. But even if you don't watch the play (there's a movie version) just read the Wikipedia entry. You'll see some familiar concepts mentioned. "Hell is other people" is the famous phrase from the play. Think about that phrase in relation to what you just saw in The Good Place Season 1.
