  • I found this 1981 Chevrolet 1 ton service truck while scoping out some other cars and just couldn't leave it be! It was retired when the previous owner got out of farming and was a utility truck for Montana Dakota Utilities before he purchased it. Although it's got some battle scars, it's in surprisingly good shape for being 41 years old! Let's see if we can't get this one back on the road! This service truck has been SOLD!!! As always, thanks for watching!

Mortske Body Repair - Good from far, but far from good! A white service truck should be called The Snow Job. Fun vid! Especially enjoyed the Canuckistan remark. 😄 No doubt someone will be upset. FYI - the "istan" part just means "place of" in Persian. Place of the Canucks.

Speaking of frost plugs erm freeze plugs, back in the 70's when I repowered my Mazda B2000 by installing a Chevy Luv engine (yeah people did cool minitruck stuff before Puddin' ever existed). I installed the fuel system, exhaust system and when fixing up the cooling system I noticed the block was cracked. The block cracked right between two freeze plugs - never seen a freeze plug actually do its job -- anyway being a teenager I asked my dad for advice and he pointed out the freeze plugs were so close together their machined bosses actually touched each other, said I should drill and tape holes around the bosses and make a plate, with a neoprene gasket -- which I did drilled and tapped like 20 tiny holes in the block, worked great and never leaked.

Those rings for the dual wheel have the conical lug nut seats on them. The wheels have a flat face on each side where the wheel meets the other wheel or the hub, which allows the wheels to be used in all six possible positions. The ring goes between the face of the outside wheel and the lug nuts. The manual transmission is a SM465, I believe that ‘69 or ‘70 was the last year for the SM420.

They usually put those wheel rings in between the two Rims as a spacer for when you have wide tires to keep your tires from touching tires on a dually will cause hot spots and blow the tires out. But then again I may be wrong.

I have a 99 model with that ring. That’s not a spacer. Mine is on the outside as well, not between the tires. I always assumed it was to keep even pressure all the way around the wheel instead of putting pressure on each individual hole. You’re holding two tires on instead of one. I’m probably wrong though. Keep up the great videos.

When you'd see fleet trucks lined up in a lot there'd be a few older ones -- those were the ones with the big block. I have no doubt that's got a replacement motor - small blocks aren't cut out for the abuse in a service truck like that one. A lot of places went from having trucks with big blocks to mini-trucks with a four banger. Disposable junk nobody cares about.

Mortske I have a 60’x80’x16’ shop with it spray foamed and two big window air units in it and it will definitely be 20 degrees cooler than it is outside when it’s 100 degrees out side!!! Lots of people are very surprised about how I’m able to keep it so cool during the summer!! Then during the winter I have the in floor heat!! It’s in 6” thick concrete floor!! Absolutely love it!!!

Had an 84 K30 with twin tanks that quit in the middle of nowhere after the camper ran the battery flat. Underneath and switch lines every 300 miles. Got home and a GM mechanic told me that there was a clock module in the fuse box that died every time the battery went flat and cost over $95 for a new one. His solution... pull the fuse panel and jumper on the back from the pink to the green wire - no more problem ever. And every time I see your chopped F1 in the background, I start drooling.

Oh yeah, problem solve that the steering fluid into the brake booster as part of secondary type master cylinder. Check that the brake pump with the steering fluid in it that it looks like steering pump with the V-belt pulley. The pump have two lines = very strong hose. The line one for return fluid, the line two goes to the brake booster in behind the master cylinder. The power steering is not important because use manual steering wheel instead. Do you need this recommendation? Your work is Service utility truck that force to have a very brake so the stopping distance of the 1981 at 50 MPH is 20 foot!

Keeping the shop cool in the summer is a hopeless task; just keep yourself cool with a small a/c next to the cooler.
The 14-bolt cab & chassis dually axle is the one to get for an axle swap on the ramp truck (pickup duallies are wider). Find an axle, rear half of the driveshaft, and move the right shock mount around to the front, and you could run gears up to a 3.21.

I "lost" a 5/8" and 10mm in the crossmember of the lower suspension arm of my 2002 GMC Sierra 1500 V6 while I was changing plugs, coils, and oil change. Both dropped SAME spot between the bushing and open ended crossmember, I can STILL hear them rattle, I couldn't get them out since that crossmember is part of the subframe/trans mount thing GM decided would be a good idea. Glad they weren't the good sockets but the 10mm was probably the 20th I watched disappear into the abyss of the "Never getting that back" void.

There is still a socket on the passenger leafspring bolt that I had to hammer on, yay rust, even with fire and almost 5 cans on luby dooby it would not come off so I had to leave the mustached leaf springs..for now. There's also a vise grip holding the original muffler mount to the frame and a LOT of number 9 wire replacing every rubber piece that used to hold up the exhaust, not paying $30 for replacement rubbers when I can spend 10 bucks on a spool of number 9 hahah, and that's just the 2002 GMC you don't wanna know what sketchyness I've done to my 71 Cheyenne I've been rustoring hahah.

i got my driver's license in '81, and around here gas was 69.9/gal. i remember 'cause on my first solo trip after getting it i was filling up my '69 javelin, and thought it was kinda cool. weird what sticks in yer memory, huh? you can make a swamp cooler with some 1x1 angle iron or an old bed frame, a ball valve that will connect to 1/4" water line on one side, and a garden hose on the other, 4"x 54" strips of an old army blanket or burlap feed sacks, a 48" vertical mount attic vent fan, an extension cord and a switch. weld a frame up with some feet to hold the fan upright and clamp the blanket strips to it on the exhaust side of the fan with about 3" between them, run the water line on the top of the frame above the blanket strips, with a drip hole at each strip with the end plugged, wire the switch and cord, plug it in and hook it up to your garden hose and adjust the drip so the water is all evaporated before it drips off the bottom when the fan is on. then just flip the switch and point it in your general direction. you can put casters on the feet to make it easy to move around the shop. it'll save you a few hundy off the cost of a store bought unit. a neighbor made one to use out in his barn, and it works surprisingly well.
