  • Recently rumours have been swirling that Disney is short on cash and needs to make up the shortfall, and one option might be to offload their least profitable studio. But could it actually happen? Could they really sell off Lucasfilm? And who would even want to buy it at this point?

Also, The Little Platoon makes a good point, but forgets that Disney needs to pay Comcast billions for its stake in Hulu at a time when everything is going badly for Disney because they forgot how to cater to their core audience. I see the precedent but tbh, I don't think that's exactly the same. Power Rangers as big as it is, it's nothing compared to what Star Wars is culturally speaking. The Power Rangers IP selling went basically unnoticed, while there is no way they can sell Star Wars and not have it being in pretty much every media in the world as the biggest failure in media ever. Selling SW now will be literally like Disney admitting "yeah, we fuck it up giving this thing to KK, get woke go broke". It would be a PR disaster in so many levels I can't aven imagine. Todays Disney wouldn't allow that.

Exactly, a lot of people seem to be forgetting this. Heard people say well it's because Power Rangers wouldn't make 3.2 billion back. I think they forget the same thing Disney forgot, Power Rangers merchandise was everywhere much like Star Wars. Every episode and movie is like a giant ad for toys.
They sold it because they ran it into the dirt like they have with Star Wars and it's popularity faded. Very similar situation and it could well end the same way.

On top of that, they've got financial issues, as seen in their MOST recent firing of 1000s and vaulting of products just RECENTLY made. It's better for them to sell it off and get another couple of billion back in the bank.
The other problem is that it simply doesn't solve their issue with their commitment to the very politics that is destroying the company. Even IF they sell it back to George, George can simply make more (authentic) Star Wars stories again, while the other company (Disney) will STEAL bleed money and talent. @bwill887 Před rokem +2

Selling it doesn’t make a ton of sense, even with the destruction Kennedy caused with the studio and their need for cash. First, it would be such an admission of failure that I cannot see it happening. Second, other income sources do exist and there is interest in their video games and the money for the theme park. Bring in Vader to the parks and they will get visitors. The other issue is that Disney would need to sell it at a significant discount and it would be a significant financial hit. Kennedy has harmed the franchised massively in her treatment of the fan favorite characters and stories, driving away fans that keep the franchises alive, and it will take a significant push to get fans back. I think Disney will try to fix this by bringing in a new studio head and try to salvage the franchise, which I think can be done but it will cost a film or two closing the sequel character's stories first.

Also, the theme park potential is HUGE considering that Universal pictures has their own theme park and made a Mario land. The one thing that everyone seems to be missing is that they can't afford to sit on Lucasfilm and hold onto it out of spite. If they do, it won't matter, cause Disney will cease to exist anyway. They are obligated by law to at least attempt to save the company or face indictments for failure to do their duty to the investors of said company - which Iger in an orange jumpsuit has its appeal.
This isn't about "They made a string of bad movies and they lost some money." This is about "They made a string of bad movies and now they have no money to operate even half the company."
Sitting on a franchise is the luxury of people not teetering heavily on bankruptcy. At this point, with their finances as it is, they don't have a choice but to cut their loses and bail out as much dead weight as possible.
And Lucasfilm is the most dead of dead weight imaginable at the moment.
When they're at Federal Court, I guarantee you when they're asked "Why didn't you sell assets like "Lucasfilm" the Disney executives aren't gonna answer "Cause we didn't want the bigots to win!" ... as they're handcuffed to the desk and wearing orange prison smocks.

@@chasehedges6775 I totally agree. I just don't see that as being possible now. The company is totally taken over by woke hipsters more worried about diversity, inclusion, feminism, race swapping, and most importantly shoving lgbtq propaganda in our face in everything they make. I think people would be willing to give Star Wars a new fresh start with a new owner. Disney Stars wars is dead.
