  • It is not often at all that we get to experience a brand new blockbuster Napoleon movie, but that's exactly what happens when Ridley Scott's NAPOLEON released. And even though I haven't seen it yet, more history on the big screen is always good, and on this historic occasion, I'm giving away one Steam game code for Napoleon: Total War! In order to partake in the giveaway, make sure to subscribe to the channel, like the video, and leave a comment letting me know which is your favorite Napoleonic video game and movie/TV show! Do you own Napoleon Total War already? Well why not participate anyway, and give it to a friend so you can play multiplayer together? :D
PS: The game code is purchased by yours truly, and this video is not in any way, shape, or form sponsored.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In this video, I detail the Napoleonic era video games I find to the best ones out there, showcasing both games that literally feature Napoleon, and those in the surrounding or similar time periods and themes, because if there's other things that define the Napoleonic Wars than just the man himself, it has to be gunfire, line infantry, and capital warships sailing on the high seas.
Do you agree with my choices, and are there other titles I've missed? Let me know in the comments, and make sure to participate in the giveaway for Napoleon Total War by subscribing to the channel, liking the video and leaving a comment :)

Assassin's Creed Unity was my favorite game featuring Napoleon, it actually still is one of my favorite games. I'm also a big fan of Total War series and sunk a lot of hours into it, particularly into Rome 2 and Warhammer series, but I still didn't get my hands on Napoleon Total War and it definitely would be a fresh experience I think. Would love to see a new Total War title in this time period on the new engine and mechanics and I think it would bring CA back on track once again after recent flops. Great suggestions on the games BTW, keep making a quality content as you always do! ✌

One gane similar game to one that you talked about is Mount & Blade Napoleonic Wars... Man i loved playing with my friends that game (M&B vanilla also) when we were in highschool because we had to transport all our PCs physically to one house so you had like 6/7/8 PCs outside the house all connected through LAN. Amazing times i told you, maybe is the nostalgia but was so funny talking in person giving ourselves orders, screaming when one was shoot and feeling like a reak unit not only because we were together in the game but in real life we were one side of the other.

Seemingly little known fun fact - you can play with historical generals and admirals in Empire Total War by recruiting the "Generals Bodyguard" or "Admirals 1st / 3rd Rate" units instead of insta-promoting commanders. Great Britain has loads throughout the campaign, and most other countries have a few, even The Maratha Confederacy has Baji Rao I! They pop up fairly randomly but at times suited to their real world life times, so you can play as Napoleon Bonaparte as a French general, but he obviously appears very late in the 1700 to 1800 main campaign. Napoleon TW though is a gem, March of Eagles is also a fun game - and unlike most paradox titles you can bash out a decent campaign in an evening, so it is fairly fast paced and easy to get through! Did play Cossacks back in the day, but was a bit scratchy. Vanilla EU4 does Napoleon more than Vic 2/3, as it ends in 1821, but I wouldn't call it a Napoleon game in any particular way!

Imperial Glory by Pyro Studios is an excellent Napoleonic era game. Even though it is an older, Risk-style game it is very immersive and addictive. I still play it regularly. it was on GOG platform, and I have since found it on Steam also. It is a great precursor to Total War: Napoleon and may even have some better features.

Great video, I had no idea paradox made a napoleonic game. My favorite napoleon game just has to be napoleon total war, but I think they cut some corners and the map should have been larger, I would gladly have given away the two other campaigns. The thing that I mostly dislike though is that you can’t play against ai alone in multiplayer campaign, or co op mode. It just removes so much content. I played in a regiment group, but there were really very few line type battles. There are possible but that is not how most of these groups play the game. Instead of marching in formation and using volley fire, most of the leaders expected their men to run around in circles from one cover location to another. With all that running it was easy to lose site of your group or find them again after getting killed and respawned. Total broke the immersion so I quit attending the battles after a while as they were two boring. Sad because it could be a great game.

    • @jeanhubertgazon
      @jeanhubertgazon Před 6 měsíci

They both work the same. However, Empire was a bit too ambitious for its time. So its a buggy game with an AI dumber than ever, and that feels a bit unfinished in some areas.
Napoleon is an Empire with a smaller scope, but that fixes most of its predecesor's issues.
Here is a quick list of what Napoleon improved from Empire :
      - Mostly bug fixing
      - Improving / fleshing out features. For exemple square formation will break cavalry charges in Napoleon while just being infantry in square in Empire. Cannonballs in Napoleon can shatter infantry formations, while in Empire they just triggered the regular death animation like models were killed by muskets.
      - First game to have a multiplayer campaign, which is a must have for a franchise with an AI this terrible.
      - Way better graphismes and battle effects, more animations to bring life to the battlefield : horses can rear, horsemen can fall from their mount, soldiers have animation for being pushed by infantry charges or thrown on the ground by cannonballs, etc. Napoleon is a magnificent game, way better visualy than Empire.
Here is a quick list of what is lost in Napoleon due to the smaller scope :
      - Multiple theatre. Napoleon only plays in Europe.
      - The evolution of units throught technologies. Since it's only the Napoleonic wars, units already have the techs of the time and there is no room for decisive technological improvment.
      - The sandboxe feeling. The campaign is splited between 2 sides already determined by history.
      - Agressive AI. Ai is extremely passive in Napoleon I've found, while in Empire it is really active on the campaign map (there where just too many exploits)

I can only think of one, to be honest, and that's Assassins creed Unity, which isn't about him and his military campaigns, but it's there nonetheless. As for movies, I loved the episode about Napoleon from the documentary series "Heroes and Villains" when I was a kid. It was a 6-part series, and in addition to Napoleon, there was an episode on Spartacus, Attila, Cortés, Richard the Lionhearted, and Shogun.

Hey, you missed a couple of excellent games from that era. A recent title released about a 1.5 years ago is Ultimate Admiral: Age of Sail from the same developer as the Ultimate General games. Another excellent but older game is Scourge of War Waterloo. I love both of the total war games for that era, but if you want a real challenge, Scourge of War Waterloo is the great game for what is was really like to command from a brigade, regiment, core and entire armies. It has a feature called command from saddle where the only view of a battle is what can be seen from horseback with status updates as well as all orders being done through dispatches using couriers on horseback. While one does not have to use this feature and can command using a Birds Eye view in a more total war style, it does a wonderful job showing what Wellington, Napoleon, General Lee and General Grant had to deal with in commanding a large scale battle. While the graphics are dated, the tactics and overall game play are great. If you haven’t tried the Scourge of War games give them a try, you may not be able to go back to the total War games after playing Waterloo. As an added note there are a couple of similar games in the Scourge of War series for the American Civil War that have similar graphics and command style. These are not easy games, they are quite complex and the learning curve is steep for the command from saddle features but totally worth the time invested. Oh, almost forgot there was also Age of Empires III as well as Cossacks III and Cossacks II Napoleonic Wars.

Before modern RPGs- Japanese or Otherwise- there was Wizardry and Ultimate, before that, early simulators of D&D, which of course were based on D&D, which came from Chainmail's Man on Man rules and Brownstien (a collaborative game about a war with many players playing a single character of one of many roles) which of course rose out of War Gaming.
War Games themselves began in Prussia around the late 18th Century- when Napoleon began his military career.
One of the most, if not *The Most Popular* forms of these games were the Napoleonic War Games.
Even Centuries later, in countries where these battles did not happen, a third of the way around the world, these games were being played.
Without them there'd be no D&D, no RPGs, the fate of gaming would be highly unpredictable, and we certainly wouldn't be enjoying all of these RPG mechanics or grand strategy, 4X, or war simulation games.
This is just one tiny aspect of the legacy of a great man who profoundly changed the world and who captures the image like a modern day Caesar or Alexander, like Ozymandias or George Washington.

Oh yeah, and I saw the new Napoleon movie starring Joaquin Phoenix as the titular star and it was awesome.
I kept hearing the Joker in his performance, it's not a complaint, I wanted to shout "LITERALLY ME!" for most of the movie because of it.
It's like Napoleon is an overly online Incel type or something.

Imperial Glory has the best scenarios, each province or city are different. In that NTW fails because we have the same generic map on every battle

I have NTW so I don't need it 😊 and I'm playing it now. It's the only game from that period that I play so hard to say if it's the best. From the overall perspective imo Shogun 2 FOTS is better game but it's not Europe and Napoleonic era. The film I highly recommend is "Duelist" it has one of the best duel scenes in the cinema history 🙂

I can’t get darthmod to run on empire or napoleon anymore, I know empire 2 mod and NTW3 are both amazing mods but after I changed my game files to have 1000 men per unit with 40 units per army in napoleon total war I can’t do anything else anymore. Each 40 stack army was like an irl Napoleonic Corps, I just can’t play any other way now, unless someone knows how to get 40 unit armies in NTW3

Napoleon Total War remains my favourite Total War title after trying out Rome 2 and Shogun II, maybe its the nostalgia, it being my first total war game, or the fact that i used it to procrastinate massively during my final exams - i dont know, but ive played through it so many times, yet im still not tired of this game :D
The new Ridley Scott Film however looks pretty disapointing according to many reviews ive seen so far :/

In my opinion, the best game for this era is the shogun 2 fall of the samurai, because the guns and cannons fell so much more powerful than the Napoleon one, the only thing is that it has lots of diferences in the feeling because it is in japan

Hmm, I think I would put EU4 closer to Napoleon than Vicky 3. Victoria 3 is really just a Victorian economy simulator while anything past 1600 in EU4, so pretty much half the game, feels to me like a empire builder.

    • @AndysTake
      @AndysTake  Před 6 měsíci +1

I thought about EU4 as well, but then I thought that, hm, most of the game takes place way before 1800, and even way before 1700, which are both considered late game. But yeah, I could've definitely added that game in there :)

No mention of age of Empires III? The game might use a larger time period, but the Napoleonic era is part of the game. When playing as the French you can even trigger the French revolution and go even further to full Napoleonic France.
