  • Once again, Mr Leong Mun Wai, Non-Constituency Member of Parliament (NCMP) has voiced his disappointment with the Ministry of Education’s (MOE) approach to handling content related to the Israel-Palestinian conflict within the Character and Citizenship Education (CCE) curriculum.
During Tuesday’s (2 April) parliamentary sitting, Mr Leong reiterated concerns regarding the transparency and clarity of the MOE’s decision-making process for CCE lessons. He questioned why the specific CCE lesson slides in question had not been disclosed, but instead, parents were asked to come to school to seek clarification.
In response, MOE Minister Chan Chun Sing emphasized the Ministry is “being more than transparent”, assuring that they are going beyond mere disclosure of materials.
He assured that the MOE is ready not only to provide parents with access to the materials but also to explain how they are utilized in lessons.

I find it difficult to understand why a political issue between Hamas & Israel that cannot be resolved by this world, need to be taught in our schools, and not to mention to kids in primary school ??
    Give them a break !!!
How much can these kids grasp the content in the slides, and will the whole intention of MOE backfire badly if some of the kids became negative in their thoughts on the Middle-East issue without really knowing what is going on there ?

I fear for Singapore education which teach Singaporeans students to accept everything without critical thinking. Singaporeans student should debate everything they learn and not accept so called “facts” as truth, as many so called ” truths” like Science, history and information are always changing in research areas, higher learning, new discovery and reality.

In the parliament, ministers should provide all info. If info sensitive, can have closed door sessions with opposition. This is definitely not the way.

Mr CCS did a very good job answering the questions in a clear manner. We also had an insight as to how the education ministry is led, decision making is done by the internal committee, which assumes responsibilities for our education content and not push them away to others outside the committee. Let's be clear that there are no experts who have all the information with regards to any particular event for both sides of any conflict. It is best to be on neutral ground.
This is in line with what Mr Lee Kuan Yew said about polling. He mentioned that he ignores polling as a method of governance, since polls are done by people that probably have less information than the government.
As for the CCE lesson, a good middle ground would be to create a video explaining to parents the things taught for the Israeli-Hamas conflict. This would be much better than just releasing slides, which as mentioned by Mr CCS, can be (and have been in the past) taken out of context. It is also much more scalable than organising in person sessions with the parents.

Prof Tan noted that Mr. Leong had made unsubstantiated allegations in Parliament on several occasions - necessiating his withdrawing them and apologising to the House. In one instance in march 2023, Mr. Leong withdrew an allegation over a bribery case linked to Keppel Offshore & Marine, and also apologise to then Speaker of Parliament Tan Chuan Jin.

What are the authorities afraid of by letting all Singaporeans access to the teaching material. Are they afraid that the public is going to twist facts into friction. Bearing in mind what is being taught to Singaporean school children is not the only concern of their parents but the whole Singapore citizens. How can the circurrium of the topic improve if only there is the one-sided of the govt?

This only happens in Singapore. Don’t get me wrong. The Government may have very good reason not to publicise what is being taught. But they must have a way of satisfying Mr Leong instead of brushing him off, perhaps have a private briefing for Mr Leong and some interested MPs.Not doing so makes the government look bad. But that’s the tendencies of the government. They know they can get away with it treating the opposition and yes the public that way and therefore does not try their best by explaining it better. Now let me hazard a guess; safest is to teach the students to be neutral, have an open mind,do their due diligence and then decide for themselves, bearing in mind the flood of propagandas swirling around. I think that’s the MOE’s approach.Problem is this will still not be acceptable, may still stir up a hornet’s nest for some people. Racial/religious and regional sensitivities is the problem here. Long story short, the Government ,specifically MOE, may have good reasons but Minister Chan’s demeanour and conduct is not respectful of Mr Leong nor Singaporeans

Requesting parents to come to the school for a lesson on Hamas and Israeli slides is unacceptable.
Why drag children into Hamas and Israeli conflict. What is the education objective as this subject is both a religious and race oriented conflict. The Minister should apologise to the children's parents. This is an outright blunder on the part of the Ministry of Education.
