    Thank you so much. This analysis opened up a completely different window to me. I have watched this film 4-5 times, but having chanced upon your analysis enriched it...

    Taking care of parents == "conservatism"?

    • @amalidris00
      @amalidris00 Před 4 lety +14

      Yeah that was such an odd binary to make lol. Both Nader and Simin are the liberal middle class.

      It is tho. I came from a conservative religious country and taking care of your parents is a sign of respect and gratitude to the times they took care of you. Its a symbol of strong family values that continue to be present even after the child is independent.

      @@austinkierulf8333 A conservative country adopting a "rule" doesn't automatically make the "rule" conservative.

    Taking care of a parent is not conservative
    I guess
    It's different in Asia it's more of a duty

    Truly insightful reading! both formal and thematic elements were thoroughly analyzed and also you have clearly done your research about Iran, and Iranian cinema, so you are very familiar with the context about which you are talking about! Great video essay 👌🏼

    I would've enjoyed this video a lot more if it was centered around film form, rather than film theory.
    I can see the plausibility with a lot of what you bring up, but some of what you're talking about seems like a stretch. Particularly when you talk about the bathroom being "drenched" in white, and the random greens that show up throughout the film (4:22), I feel theorizing these types of things take away from the grander scheme of the film's powerful message.

    • @jaredkunish
      @jaredkunish Před 5 lety +5

      what are you talking about? production design is a very purposeful art form and that subtext only strengthens the "grander scheme" of the film

    • @reelseri0us629
      @reelseri0us629 Před 4 lety +4

      I completely agree. This film has so much to say that centering only on the aspect of production design really does its analysis a disservice.

    If you had some background information about the 1979 Iranian Revolution, and how much it was a class revolution pitting the conservative hinterlands against the liberal cities, you got a much richer appreciation of this masterpiece of a movie. I was riveted, as the divorcing couple represented the urban liberals chafing and fighting against the regime established by the rural conservatives. Of course, the poorer couple comes out the worst here, as the system is still tilted toward the interests of the more powerful people in society. It's all sorts of complex, how the rich interplay between class, politics, religion, law and history wends its way into this intimate drama of a dissolving family.

    Interesting review in particular related to the movie decoupage. Viewers might not notice them if the they don’t have the aware what they can look for when watching the movie. I really liked the creative use of framing, colours, composition, centred vs. off-centred characters, symmetrical frames, etc.

    This genuinely takes the cake for pseudo analysis in a film and I thought I've seen everything. If an out of focus green car in background of a shot means Iranian political movment to you, then I suggest you to get reality check asap. Seeking extremely vague patterns for the sake of proving some sort of subtext is a sign of being on a spectrum quite honestly.
