    Kiarostami said i end the film like that because it was so depressing otherwise, i wanted to show that this is just a movie, i was afraid maybe someone like Mr Badiee sees the movie and thinks of doing it! Wanted to show that we're all there with him.

    In my own interpretation, the death of Mr. Badii in the end is a positive interpretation of life because it showed that suicide is not the sole answer to end pain and that we should not kill ourselves for something temporary (just like what Mr. Bagheri said in the movie). I agree with you on the behind the scene part of the movie since it almost supports my claim. We see how everything is positive, everyone is carefree, good vibes everywhere, something that Mr. Badii could have experienced if he endured the pain long enough.

    Amazing movieeee! Love the story told by the old man... really thought that that exchange was gonna help the protagonist save himself haha. Great analysis!

  • @bl0ndi550
    @bl0ndi550 Před 2 lety +13

    But Mr. Bagheri tells Badii that the change in perspective in his allegory - the broken finger being the distorted perspective - is what helps the Turk, he - the world - was never ill, the lens he experienced it through was. The fact that the perspective changes at the end of the film - I believe - points to Badii coming to terms with the world, the changed perspective. And personally I think the cherries dropping from the tree thing to be a bit of a leap in logic.
    Though thinking about this from that point of view - and I am making my own leap of logic here, I only thought of this as I wrote the comment and I think it's tenuous at best - the fact that the camerawork and quality in the final scene is so shoddy could point to the thought that Badii was right in the first place, that the world is cruel and unjust, and that him changing perspective is distorting reality.
    Though personally, I agree with Bagheri, a world that allows for so much beauty, the colours of the sunrise, the black sky ablaze with the moon and the stars, the water in the spring, the taste of cherries, can't be entirely cruel.
    Great video.

      thank you so much for providing your thoughts, i think you really bring an interesting discussion about perspective to the table. I think its totally okay to have these leaps in logic because it all is up to interpretation.

    Really liked your analysis! Can't resist putting few lines in. My initial feeling while watching first time was that he needs to live. That's why he is there in the morning lighting cigarette with that unhappy face although they came to do only sound. On a second thought: do I care if his suicide was successful or not? I do as a decent enough human being, but should I care? We don't know much about him and we never managed to connect to him as there is only pain, we know he has, to connect to. So, in a sense I felt like the old man was talking to me about perspectives, mulberry tree and that simple poem. Maybe what does matter is me waking up joyfully the next day and focusing on positives a little more than dusty roads...

  • @meisam7144
    @meisam7144 Před rokem +8

    I always loved the fact that the old man might have changed the way Badii sees the world, on the other hand, could not understand the change of perspective at the end of the movie. The way you put it together makes sense. I am just not sure about your interpretation of the name. Somewhere in the movie the old man says "do you want to dismiss the taste of cherry?". It is also not mentioned that the tree next to the hole is a cherry and it is quiet dry. Another thing, I think there are three locations in the movie. One in the city representing life, one in the middle where the workers work and one on the top which is more dry and lifeless representing death. Also the sounds change when the locations change.

    What is amazing about this movie and what a lot of people don’t know is how many famous Americans actors were in this movie, like Tom Hanks, Harvey Keitel, Robert Duval, Kevin Costner and a few more whom are big fans of Kiarostami movies and his friends. They made Cameo appearance as extras on various scenes and kiarostami masterfully hide them in the background! If you watch it again closely you’ll be able to see them only if you are paying close attention to the background! One hint is museum scene!

      @@FloopyDoopy. sadly this movie is still getting a lot of hate in iran. mainly because of the religious beliefs.
      i had always heard from fiends and family that its not worth watching so i never really gave it a try. but when i finally watched it last week i was really amazed. the most beautiful thing about the movie for me (on the surface) was how raw and realistic it was. there wasn't a super hero saving the main character, no cliche dialogues, everything about it felt real. the long silent shots that sometimes serve no purpose, real life-like conversations and the filming and everything.
      about the meaning, there could be a lot of interpretations, but the movie itself was very unique and beautiful.
      maybe that's the point Kiarostami is trying to get across. that instead of trying to find meaning we should just enjoy it while it lasts.
      again, thanks for this video. love from iran.

    • @FloopyDoopy.
      @FloopyDoopy.  Před 2 lety

      @@actuallythepie yeah, the religious commentary on the film makes sense why it might be disliked in Iran, as well as the fact that the Iranian government doesn't agknowledge Abbas Kirostami as the best director from the country.
      I also love how the film has so many intrpetations and understandings and just how raw and real the film is and just the emotion it manages to convey.
      Thank you for the comment, much appreciated :)

    It seems to me there is a mistake in this analysis. The protagonist didn't want to commit suicide, as it's a sin for muslims. He would do it if it wasn't for his religion, that's the main point of the story. He's looking to find a way to die, but not by suicide. He mentioned several times he would drink sleeping pills and then asked people to bury him. If he's asleep by the time he's thrown the soil at, he'll just die in his sleep. If he's awake - he will be pulled by this person from the hole. Thus he doesn't commit suicide, but finds a rather tricky way to die.

    • @mr.horseshoe2301
      @mr.horseshoe2301 Před 6 měsíci

      Willfully ingesting poison is still suicide. Also, many muslims commit suicide, they are only human after all.
