  • Friends and admirers gathered at the SVA Theatre in NYC on July 15, 2016 to celebrate the life and achievements of the great filmmaker/poet/photographer Abbas Kiarostami, who had passed away 11 days earlier in Paris after 3 months of questionable medical treatment in Iran.. Organized by his long-time friends and colleagues, Peter Scarlet and Nazzy Beglari, the event aimed to speak as simply as possible of this unique man and his achievements. Participants included Martin Scorsese and Jim Jarmusch; others unable to attend, like Robert De Niro and Errol Morris, sent personal messages.

@Johnathan Reuben thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site on google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff atm.
Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.

If someone was to ask me what was the most memorable thing I saw in my life, I would say, the final scene in Through the Olive Trees

seen three Abbas films over the last year. I saw Close Up tonight, and the way that it blurs the lines constantly between recreation and reality, and it's absolutely boggling. It's shocking. One of my favorite films I've seen over the last year. Although I do like Taste of Cherry Just a bit more.

I'm surprised they were friends cause Kiarostami'd despised the commercialism and the entertainment cinema.

Martin Scorsese did great effort helping autheur cinema from countries like Iran, Japan, Brazil and Poland to achieve recognization around US and the western countries. I'm from Brazil and our greatest filmmaker, Glauber Rocha, was among his early influences. Even now Scorsese watches "Antonio das Mortes" (Rocha' 1969 movie) before doing his own pictures and if i'm not wrong he also did the "Wolf of Wall Street" cast watch this movie

Scorsese at his peak made beautiful arthouse cinema. He's definitely at the level of Kiarostami although their approach to cinema is different.
