STEVE HACKETT'S Guitar playing is EPIC..😍😍😍😒😒🙏🏻
They should have let him stay for two more albums. Pity.
@@BrendanMacWade It was Hackett's decision to leave the band. Banks has said that it took him by surprise when he left the band, practically unannounced. But Banks was so self-centered & arrogant back then that he never noticed Hackett was so unhappy about Banks rejecting many of his songs.
The interplay between Hackett’s guitar and Rutherford’s bass is exquisite. Add Tony’s ‘special sauce’ and you have perfection. A stunning piece of music. 🙌🏻
I always admired Rutherfords bass playing ! Totally selfless and utterly supportive
and the lyrics!!!!
April of 2024 and still listening to this magnificent music. From BA Argentina.
May 2024, Columbia SC 💜
June 4, 2024 and still remembering the 1977 Wind and Wuthering tour concert. I'm a drummer and admire Phil's skills but I also play keyboards and playing Tony Banks tunes on my Mellotron sends me into another world. Two very talented musicians.
Y a la fecha Steve Hackett es el único era que mantiene vivo el espíritu del viejo Genesis. Gracias Steve. Salud!
This whole album slipped through the cracks when folks talk about their best ever. Its right there with any of them.
Without a doubt, it's the hidden gem......the forgotten child.....the album that when everyone is talking about their best ever and you say " Wind and Wuthering" people slap their head and go "OH SHIT! FORGOT ABOUT THAT ON, YEAH WOW!"
Couldn’t agree more. Whenever I listen to it, I listen to it for weeks. It’s so fucking beautiful when you’re in that sort of mood.
@@steveschmidt6847 I've never 'forgotten' this 'child' of Genesis ever since I first listened to it, which btw is the very 1st Genesis album that I listened to in its entirety, and its impact has never left me.
Steve Hackett and his impressive sensibility fit perfectly with Phil Collins voice. Simply wonderful.
One of my most favourite pieces by Genesis. Wonderful.
Mine too, lovely song!
Mine ,too.
I just discovered this song. Love it!
It sure is!
dozens of masterpieces and albums NO COMPETITION AMONG THEM
I just LOVE this tune, it has a soothing, vaguely melancholic but nostalgic quality to it. To those of us over 50, it's like it's a tribute to the days of our parents when things seemed so much simpler.
The musicianship is top drawer, as can be expected 😎👍
Those days of our parents when things seemed simpler were better to be fair. Definately a British feel to the song. All we need is some cream teas, crumpets, scones, lemon curd jam tea and chutney lol
A hidden treasure of Genesis. Why not a single? Steve's acoustic guitar solo, Phil's voice, Tony's orchestration... One of the most beautiful ballads the band wrote
It’s too good for the radio ;)
They did release a single from this album. Can you guess what song? The dull & very lightweight song on this album "Your Own Special Way". They even performed it on American TV on the Merv Griffin Show! Of course, it didn't do well on the charts.
Fan since Trespass, _still_ feel like this is not only one of Genesis best songs, but one of the best songs I've heard my entire life. How this wasn't nominated for a Grammy is beyond me. It's a stunning achievement in song writing and recording and never sounds dated.
Mr. Hackett is sorely missed, though. Also been here since The Knife.
@@loucat2779 Why this lament- be glad this music was created. And if you do not like what came after his leave, well that is too bad for you then, innit?
@@loucat2779 RIP Steve, sad to hear.
@@peterjszerszen he means he's missed in the band. Gosh, my stomach sank in utter terror when I read your comment, until I googled and saw he's alright. May the gods give him many more years of life, joy and music.
Nominated for a Grammy?
Sure you can’t be serious in wanting the usual sh!te candidates mentioned in the same breath of the true masters Genesis
I’ll go make some tea…
Genesis from 1971-1977 was the best band in the world. I never get tired of listening
Me neither!
I agree!
Hey, don't forget Duke from 1980. That was an awesome album!
For me from 1970-1980.
1970-92 best band ever
Unbelievable the quality of the music we had those years!
Whether you like early Genesis or their later stuff, it can't be denied that this is a beautiful song!
In my opinion the chorus sucks but the intro is beautiful
Last album of the real Genesis, after that they made pop songs ...
I like the Post PG Hackett era Genesis the best! 1976-78, 3 great airy fairy albums and popular live album
It is, but the voice of Phil was too much "smushy" at that time.
@@pim1234 There is 'Undertow', 'Burning Rope' & 'The Lady Lies' on ATTWT; 'Duchess', 'Cul-de-Sac', 'Duke's End' on Duke; 'Me and Sarah Jane' on Abacab. And just about all of these songs were written by Tony Banks. He kept the prog-rock flame alive for a time after Hackett left.
One of my favorite Genesis songs of both eras, this Steve Hackett-written song is so very relevant to our Times now, how we need to be "hypnotized by" watching escapist fare on TV to take us away from dealing with what's going on in the world, such as the war in Ukraine ("... and the things I hate, oh Lord, is staying up late to watch some debate on some nation's fate") or "the Arabs and the Jews, boy, too much for me, they get me confused, boy, puts me out to sea...." His beautifully-composed acoustic guitar intro sets the mood so well. Phil Collins' vocals work really well throughout the song along with his impactful, dramatic drumming in the chorus, and Tony Banks' atmospheric keyboards give the song an ethereal quality to it. I simply can't get enough of this song, no matter how many times I listen to it.
The last album of the Genesis I adored.
Some of the finest music ever made...
They will be playing this album at my funeral, it will speak volumes as to who I was. This album plucks my heart strings.
Probably my all-time favorite Genesis song.
Steve hackett do a great live version with his band, Genesis revisited check it out.
@@johnogden7506 I've seen that on CZcams, just not in person. YET.
DEFINITELY my all-time favourite!
@@brunoprimas1483 Hackett tours extensively all over the world. Hope you've gotten to see this performed live already!
Lyrics, verse melody - Steve Hackett
Chorus melody - Phil Collins
Wonderful song. It's so...British in a certain way. So warm and comforting.
It does, a beautiful, reminiscent feeling.
It's time for Tea. 🫖🍵
It is very British, specifically referencing the TV output of that time. I once read an American reviewer describing the lyrics as "abstract". They probably didn't get the cultural references, e.g. "out for 23".
This is a 'very' British song, and all the cultural references are indeed recalling events/tv programmes from mid-1970s Britain. I always think of Wind and Wuthering as a Wintry, Christmassy album, and this is by far my favourite Genesis track.
This will NEVER get old - a timeless classic
The "newcomers" Phil and Steve got to show their talents as songwriters in this one.
And sooooo beautifully sung !!!!!!!
Genesis will NEVER get old! 💕💙💖
Their music never fails. Goosebumps music 🥰❤❤
Divine Song! I love you Genesis! 💖🎼🎶

I have been a Genesis fan since the early 70's and Blood On The Rooftops is my favourite Genesis song hands down.
Haven't heard this in many years.....wow...another life 💅
Why's there a tear running down my cheek? I love this Group!
🇨🇦✌🏻🎶🎸✍🏻♥️✨🌍💫
Best group ever and no one is going to come close especially when it comes to concerts. Great times of what I can remember. LOL
No doubt I’ve shed a few tears listening to this masterpiece. Always thought this song was about Jewish and Palestinian wars
bawling
good mellotron in this one
I can easily imagine the boys jamming and laying down something very similar to this (watching them jam together in the early days was pure heaven) and then picking up a newspaper and finding the lyrics. Bliss.
Mesmerising !!
Absolutely stunning.
Not a bad song on the entire album!!!
Thank you Steve Hackett.
One of my favourite tracks.
This is one of the best Genesis songs ever.
One of the best Genesis songs as well as one of the best compositions from mainly Steve
Beautiful Classic We always watch The Queen On Christmas Day 🥰💗
🙂
Been A FAN of GENESIS since Genesis to Revelation...This Is A BEAUTIFUL Album...1 of my favorites..😍😍😍👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Me too, you old bastard you! Definitely better in my day!
Salut, idem pour moi...nous sommes des Dinosaures 🦖 SUPER FAN DE GENESIS ! 👍🤩✌👋❣🇧🇪
Poignant for the holiday season, especially in 2023.
This is one of my favorite 10 songs that Genesis ever did. It is also unlike anything else they did, before or after. The textures, the pastoral picture that the soundscape paints, the mood, just wow. This song just makes you wonder what direction Genesis may have gone if Steve Hackett hadn't left.
It was impossible for Hackett to stay. He wasn't getting his fair share of music recorded. The other three were out voting him. He cowrote this song which they never performed in concert. He cowrote Inside And Out which was left off the album in favor of inferior Tony Banks songs like All In A Mouse's Night and Wot Gorilla? WAW had three instrumentals on it. We could have done without Wot Gorilla?
One of 10 best for sure. Direction was visible during many years of Hackett's presence in the group.
Definitely has a similar feel to Steve's solo work.
Losing Hackett hurt the band's musicianship even more than losing PG.
Hackett's 80's music was poppy as hell. Hackett got it together in the mid 90's and been awesome ever since.
Please Genesis, play this song on this tour. Please, just once!.
Poetry, Pure Beautiful, Beautiful Poetry.
I have to keep repeating that beautiful guitar solo
It's in my head.
This masterpiece brings pure joy to my soul.
My sister got married in S.F. in 1996. I flew there from N.J. for the wedding. Stayed in a very cool, humble hotel near Fisherman's Warf. I brought this cassette (yes, cassette) with me. Played the hell out of this album. I didn't know the lyrics too well. But while there, hearing Phil sing "Streets of San Francisco" was so heartwarming. I really learned to appreciate this album on that trip.
Very nice, especially the part about the "Streets of San Francisco". Hope your sister and her spouse are doing well these days.
BTW, I was born in NJ. 😊
Great! Maybe now you can learn how to spell wharf.
@@skinovtheperineum1208 The spelling troll strikes again!
Warf warf warf. Makes me wanna barf.
Been listening to this since i was a kid . Im in my fiftys now. And it never gets old . No one does it likecthe Brits.
Except Kansas
The song highlights the genius and excellence in musicianship of the band post Peter. Steve’s guitar work is on the same level of any other guitarist anyone ranks in top 5 of all time.
No doubt.
Man, what a gem!!! Thanks for the memories!!!
This song almost makes me feel like I'm watching some sort of British/Christmas/Concert play.
Oh what sweet sounds🎶🎵😍 this song is one of my alltime favorite Genesis songs!
The hommage to Lindisfarne "grime on the Tyne is mine, all mine, all mine" never fails to make me smile.
...any clue to the title meaning?
I think of it as, planes being shot down over your head, NBD… blood on the rooftops.
The Lindisfarne reference. They were both on the Chariisma label. I love Lindisfarne too. Compliments accepted.......
Beautiful song. Just beautiful. The whole album is brilliant and as someone else said, even the cover of the album is superb. I admit I wasn’t keen on all of the “we can’t dance” period but they’re still a great band.
Magical!
This album and ATOTT would have been a great double album. 45 years later and still sounds awesome.
beautiful song .................. christian from chile , south america listening genesis, great group ...thank genesis...long life united kingdom ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡
Steve wrote the intro and verses, Phil the chorus. One of the best in their extensive catalogue.
How do you know that? Did Phil say that in his book or some interview?
@@andrewc3458 Yep. There's a video right on CZcams. Matter of fact they go through all the albums in their discography. And interview the personnel on each album. And yeah that also includes Ant Phillips, Chester Thompson ECT...czcams.com/video/zO8b6ZIQyI0/video.htmlsi=YRixeyetNmWxCSvq
Beautiful song... "we always watch the Queen on Christmas Day"
I really looooove this song. Pretty much. It's introduction by SH is superb. Definitively one of my favs of Genesis catalog.
Great album....Very underrated.
Fan since their early days early '70's. This comes to mind unbidden often over the years. I'm American and I know it's very English, but... it reminds me of my years in Holland, walking the dijk overlooking Marsdiep from Den Helder, trying to stay warm against the breeze off the North Sea... too many memories...
That's interesting as it was recorded in The Netherlands
I can tell the song is deep, because the words are hard to make out.
A perfectly crafted song that captures a mood and an era. Genesis still had great songs in them. Four more excellent albums followed through 1983. But as a 'middle period' Genesis track, this is a peak highlight. Bonus points for anyone who gets the Lindisfarne reference in there. (Toon! Toon!) Also I think this has the second and final cricket reference in a Genesis song. Lord's has a weather vane in the shape of Old Father Time and around 1pm it is time for lunch. I think Peter knew what he was doing there.
One of my favorites by the band - any era. They nail it.
Best regards from Poland, great 🎶💥👌
Of course! 🥰✌️
I hear King crimson were big there too.
Another one of my favorite Genesis songs! (I have many!) I love the melancholy mood of this song
Amazing acoustic intro and fantastic lyrics!🎸🎶♥️
@@Derayes I think at that time Steve’s leaving was inevitable. A couple of years later they were cool with solo activities - as a matter of fact the solo careers are an important reason why Genesis have been existing so long without going for each other’s throat.
God, still so apt today of all days. Wish it was as simple as going to make some tea☮
Ive been singing these songs with such passion all my life since the 70s I never knew the real words the words make all the difference
on second listening yes this one is a masterpiece best on the album imo
Meraviglioso disco, meravigliosi GENESIS! un saluto a tutti voi 👋, Massimo di Bergamo, Italia.
The lyrics are phenomenal too. This album always had an impression on me, since 1978.
2024. The first time I have listened to this track since I listened to the original album in the 1970s. Wow! Instant transport back to late teenage years, making my way in the world and for the first time hundreds of miles away from my home in a bedsit flat and alone in a strange city. Definitely shed some tears for that life of decades ago.
Wind and wuthering. Good Album 🎶🎵🎵📀🎧👋😄👍🌏🎤🎻🎹🎵🎵🎵💗💗💗💗💗💗🔆
Sans Phil Genesis n'aurait pas évolué; le succès planétaire de Phil et de Genesis en est une preuve réelle. Phil est un batteur et chanteur remarquable et hors norme, il est irremplaçable. God save the Phil. Respect eternal. From Paris, thank you so much.
Wonderful Lyrics, thats's what I call modern poetry......
Sometimes, there is genius that isn't ever detected. I played this song in college for a friends directorship project...I don't think people understood this genius. That was 1979-80. How could you not connect with this feeling and genius? Life is short...this song reflects life. Hold onto it. Recognize it when you feel it.
Blood On The Rooftops
Song by Genesis
Dark and grey, an English film, the Wednesday Play
We always watch the Queen on Christmas Day
Won't you stay?
Though your eyes see shipwrecked sailors you're still dry
The outlook's fine though Wales might have some rain
Saved again
Let's skip the news boy, I'll make some tea
The Arabs and the Jews boy, too much for me
They get me confused boy, puts me off to sleep
And the thing I hate, oh Lord
Is staying up late, to watch some debate on some nation's fate
Hypnotized by Batman, Tarzan, still surprised
You've won the West in time to be our guest
Name your prize
Drop of wine, glass of beer dear what's the time?
The grime on the Tyne is mine, all mine, all mine
Five past nine
Blood on the rooftops, Venice in the Spring
Streets of San Francisco, word from Peking
The trouble was started by a young Errol Flynn
Better in my day, oh Lord
For when we got bored we'd have a World War, happy but poor
So let's skip the news boy, I'll go make that tea
Blood on the rooftops, too much for me
When old Mother Goose stops and they're out for twenty-three
Then the rain at Lords stopped play
Seems Helen of Troy has found a new face again
