My dad just passed 2 months ago, he was 67 and died to cancer. Since he was young he loved this band, it was his favorite, and so he passed this passion to me when I was still a child. We both listened to all of these songs in his car although we didn't even know the meaning of the words (I'm from Italy).
Now that I'm 20 and have some english knowledge, I can finally understand a lot of the songs and oh boy, this one hit me so hard ❤️ it hit even harder knowing that this was one of our favorite songs, although back then we didn't even know the meaning of the words.

remember that in 1993, I was in a meeting at a friend's house in the Belgrano neighborhood in Buenos Aires. In that meeting there was a girl that I liked, suddenly the owner of the house put this theme of Genesis, out of nowhere I took impulse and invited that girl to dance Afterglow. I never thought I was meeting my wife through that Genesis slowdown. 28 years my love, I love you Angie.

I had this song played at my father's funeral. He loved Genesis and used to blast the neighborhood with this fine music through his Fischer stereo fifty years ago. He was eighty two years old when he died.

Carpet crawlers is onedimensional, sounds flat compared to this song. It can't stand alone if you cut it out of the album
One of the most beautiful songs ever written.
I had a friend. A very close one. She was one who understood me, and I understood her. We shared a love of music, even though mine was more leaning towards progressive rock, and her pop rock. She introduced me to a number of bands, most notably Supertramp and Electric Light Orchestra. However, there was one small band that she loved called “Genesis.” Now, being a Prog-head, I’ve heard the name before, but never got into them for some reason. She showed me their later records, such as Invisible Touch and We Can’t Dance. I loved them. They were great. I moved on to Self-titled and Abacab, and loved them as well. Then… she committed suicide because life became too much for her to bear. Moving on to Duke and …and then there were three… with a heavy heart, I moved into Wind and Wuthering, and heard this. I could feel her beside me, singing the lyrics alongside Phil. I broke down.

Could be a way of coping themselves due to unexpected circumstances, such a loss of a loved one for example. I know that all too well. Take care everybody. Life is beautiful, isn't it?

I’ve heard a good lot of stories like this, but this one.. This one nearly brought me to tears. Music is so powerful, even songs you haven’t heard before can make you feel like somebody long gone is with you again.. It’s deep.

The first version I listened to was from 3 sides live when Phil had already learned to sing full voice - I recommend you listen to that entire concert!
It's a great version, but I prefer the one from the Mama Tour video.
@@jtlampsu2 Nah. Phil’s voice was too clean, not enough attack in it. He’d just about found it by the Duke Tour, and got it right on the Abacab, Three Sides Live and Mama tours.
I literally wore that album out, especially "The Cage"... Great album and also the first version I heard of this song.

The creative tension within Genesis helped create some wonderful music. This song is certainly one of their best! I find it quite ironic that there’s some similarities in Phil and Peter’s voices! Genesis is certainly one of the best!

An underrated, Golden Nugget in The Genesis catalog! A song that brought me to tears when I first heard it, and more so now when I hear the first line, in relevance to Phil's medical condition! Truly....... A masterpiece of sound!!!!
I don't agree that this is an underrated song. You can find it in Seconds Out, and now being played by Steve Hackett and his band. This is one of the most recognized Tony Banks compositions, and Steve honours it in his concerts.

Walking through the clouds -- heavenward - meeting your loved ones on the way up. I dedicate this heavenly-resplendent tune in very loving memory of my parents - they were a godsend. So was my wife of only 2 years (stolen from me by cancer).

No Mellotrons were involved in the recording of Afterglow - the choral effect was created with tape loops of Phil's voice.
I think the live version used a mellotron.
