This Job DIDN’T Go As Planned! | CAT 777 Suspension Strut Repair
Vložit
- čas přidán 7. 12. 2022
- There’s more to this repair than we first thought and it didn’t go as planned. This is a front suspension strut off a Caterpillar 777 Mining Haul Truck, the wear band seal groove has worn out and started to “ramp” so we need to reclaim it. We show the process of getting this big suspension strut setup in our lathe for machining but unfortunately once we get a dial indicator on it we realise the repair is more than what we and our customer first thought! We wanted to show that not all jobs go to plan or work out and this is one of them.

Kurtis the wildlife man 😁👍
A very entertaining AND educational video. As are all of your video's.
I still really enjoyed this video. Great stuff! 👍
There is nothing I hate more than investing time and brain into a setup, only to find out that there was a fatal flaw in my assumptions. In your case, I am curious whether there is enough volume and profit to merit fabrication of a quick-and-dirty go/no-go rig to determine concentricity beforehand. Very nice Sherlocking!
Came for the engineering, stayed for the bloopers! Great work CEE team!
Glad you enjoyed it!
So very true!
Came for the engineering. Stayed for the lizard.
One of Yewchoob's better channels.
Me EVERY TIME! ❤️
@Gruntsky, what f%%king bloopers 😁🤡😁🤡😁🤡😁🤡🐴
You both set a new standard for quality of CZcams videos. Excellence of problem solving and no-nonsense video construction. Congratulations on being so good at what you both do.
Totally agree. straight to the point real world shop. That's why I love their videos. Keep up the good work Kurtis and Karen love you guys.
Don't forget the blooper reels!
So true
This guy is an absolute bloody legend 🤠
The compassion you show animals speaks volumes about your heart. Good on you
That out of balance setup had me puckering on my sofa, it's a good job you know what you're doing! Shame the job didn't work out, I hope the customer paid you for the setup work. Thanks once again for another excellent video Kurtis and Karen!
I love your compassion for all animals. Another great video even though the job did not work out.
Yeah, you can eat 'em, but they taste like...
I don't even know if this would be possible, but it'd be really cool to see some video testimonials or interviews with some of your regular customers! I'd love to hear from them about how working with you guys has helped/improved their business, especially over Covid times. Stay awesome and stay curious!
The beauty of the video, is that the customer gets to see what you did to make your determination. Bloody well right.
I'm always amazed at your competence. Continued success for your company. Greetings from Austria/Europe
Thank you! Cheers!
Austria/Europe ? As oppose to Austria/US and Austria/China ? :D
@@randomusernumber1 hahahahah
@@randomusernumber1 yes because if you asked the average American where Austria is they probably would be unable to point it out on a globe lol
@@samrodian919 agreed
Yup, definitely time to get a horizontal borer. You don't need them often, but when you do, they are pretty damned handy.
Man... I just screw around in my garage with an old South Bend lathe and I still learned a bunch on this video. Combine that with your love of animals... this is one of the best channels I'm watching on CZcams right now. You two are great. Keep it up!
Great video. I love that you see a problem and report it to the client instead of just throwing something together and half Assing it. A lot of companies here in America wouldn’t do that. They would just throw together because they want the money. That’s what sets you apart from a lot of different machinists. Your honesty and good work will take you very far. Excellent job.
This machinist would have measured it and put it on the horizontal mill. It is not a lathe job unless you put it on a mandrel.
Lots of companies are "one hit wonders" they work hard to get work but loose on repeat orders.
@@bingosunnoon9341 he probably doesnt have a horizontal mill.... otherwise im sure he would've used it
@@bingosunnoon9341 he said he would have done it that way but he didn’t have the machine to do it with
Great to see the jobs that dont work out. Shows how your days really go. Awesome vid as always
this is on of my all time favorite you tube channels! i love all that y'all do!
Hey mate thanks very much, glad you enjoy the channel!
I couldn't agree more. Top level content every single time. A must watch every time I get a notification.
Yes Sir,
I agree this is good stuff, I enjoy it every time & look forward to the next.
@@TracyNorrell ß,
We don't often get to see the jobs that don't work out, so this was interesting to see the same process pursued with a less than perfect outcome. Those jobs come along now and then, and must be sussed out little different than those that are successfully completed. Thanks for sharing this along with all those representing success.
What i find amazing with this channel is, i'm not even into machining, but the editing and the explanation is so good that my curiosity keeps me here for great entertainment.
Not to mention the bloopers, never let go of them 😂👍
I've noticed how popular you all are on youtube these days. I watch a lot of different channels on here. Your name gets brought up once in a while. You seem to be leading the industry on engineering. Hard work pays off! I would also like to mention that Karen's abilities with the camera and editing are exceptional. Cheers from Florida.
Cheers mate! Glad you're enjoying our videos! Thanks so much for the support 😊👍
I don't know if it can be called engineering. He's not an engineer and not doing what an engineer does. I'd call him a machinist. Or a mechanical workshop expert technician. Maybe technician is the right word.
@nikolaospizanias1836 Well, I am a master electrician and although I don't have the degree as an electrical engineer, I still hold the same license as an engineer, so whether Curtis is an engineer, machinist, or a mechanic, I'm sure he can outdo any engineer because of his years of experience in the trade. To me, it's engineering at its finest!
@@Unexpectedperspectivesnow I'm pretty sure I watched him ENGINEER a nice counterweight, As well as ENGINEER a steady rest guide. Also I'm 95% sure you could not engineer your way out of a wet paper bag. It's actually a fairly broad term. a person who designs, builds, or maintains engines, machines, or public works is the definition, design and build (a machine or structure) is the verbal definition. And technically by fabricating those parts and incorporating them into that big lathe means he designed a machine specifically for the purpose of working on that specific strut. If that isn't ENGINEERING than I'll kiss your ass.
She is exceptionally good at stillness and framing. A+++
In the end... Homie doesn't know or care how the repair went !! Great day for doggo !! Always a great time at CEE-A online here, Cheers!
The jobs that don't work out are just as interesting as those that do, it's good to see what problems you face in the real world, i really do enjoy your video's, thanks for the content. 👍👍
Something that had literally gone "pear shaped"... That was going to be a massive job. Good to see the deal is always "do it right or don't do it at all." Stand out from the cowboys - a great role model for small businesses.
It's just not a Friday without a CEE video. Great job as always!
Hai Kurtis, sometimes you’ve to make a decision and call the customer that it will not happen the way both parties had been thought about. That’s what you call professional 👍👏👊
I got to say, I love your pup! He’s quite a personality. 😊
Just watching the setup, the forces involved in that big old lump spinning must be huge, that you can then sensibly machine it to any kind of tolerance is very impressive to watch. Can’t wait to see what happens!
did you not watch to the end
I suppose it's frustrating the repair as such didn't happen but seeing your meticulous approach to it was pretty cool. Also great to see that lizard rescued!!
This channel has become more exciting than a Netflix series
I was looking this video trying to understand how Kurtis was setting this piece on the lathe, when the video ended without nothing done. 30 mins passed like nothing, that’s incredible! I was expecting the actual job being done without realizing the piece was messed up really bad.
But this is part of the job: sometimes things didn’t go like always.
Thank you for sharing this side of the job!
Greetings from Italy!
It's friday and a new episode of CEE is here! 🥳 What a wonderful start into the weekend 👍
Enjoy mate!
Only part way through, but huge kudos to your camera operator, very, very good work
Kurtis, you and Karen put out great videos! I've never used 90% of the machines you use, but I really enjoy your work.
Kurtis, you are so smart using your overhead crane on even the heavy stuff you are fully capable of lifting. You know this, you are saving your joints/body, and it's much safer.
God bless you two.
I wasn’t gonna say anything about the tail stock chuck being stuck inside. I was wondering but I knew you had to have a plan. 🤯✌️👍
well done for spotting that early!
The funniest part was Curtis tickling the tail and feet of that lizard; if that lizard visited twice or thrice again, we shouldn't be shocked if we saw it sitting on the shoulder of Curtis and he'll name it George 2.
It is SO much fun watching a wizard do a setup like THAT! So informative and fun to watch. Thank you!
That dog is too stinkin' cute !
Cheers from Canada
I so enjoy watching you think your way out of tough spots 😊
It's 2 am on the east coast of the USA and I'm watching a great video 👍👍
very early there, thanks for taking time to watch!
Wow, what a nightmare setup you needed to do for this one, hats off! 👍
Gday Kurtis and Karen, this goes to show not every jobs is roses and it’s fantastic your showing jibs that don’t work out, many other channels don’t do this, it weird how the bores are deformed like they have, possibly a bin job maybe, awesome video as always mate, have a great weekend, cheers
Cheers for the feedback mate, appreciate it. We try to keep it as real as possible over here 😊👍
I am glad that your channel showed up on my feed! Love the work! Bloopers! Safety Man! The Real Boss... The Wife! Keep it up! 😂🤪
I love the joy of the dog ,the workshop's keeper😂😂😂😂😂
G'day Kurtis, Karen and Homey great video on problem solving and I love seeing Kurtis's mind working.
I was wondering how you were going to get the tail stock chuck loosened, sweet tool you've got to get the job done Curtis. Nice work once again on the film editing Karen. cheers CEE Team including the boss Homey. 😀
The title almost made me think Curtis had done something wrong. That'll be the day eh 😂
“I’ll talk to my customer and see what they want to do” then proceeds to walk outside to a lizard with its ass hanging out of the underside of an excavator. 😂😂😂
Pure. Editing. Genius.
CEE Lizard Recovery Team to the rescue. A shame you could not continue with the repair as that looked like a rather interesting job. Thank you Karen and Kurtis for another interesting and informative video. Have a bonza weekend. WOOF! to Homie.
I guess I'm curious if you charged them for all the preliminary work?
@@dziggy3004 There would be an hourly charge unless CEE is really generous (Kurtis spent a good two hours checking that part that is a good chunk of the day). I was a panel beater and if I laser lined a car, to check it was straight/square before work was started, it would be charged for even if the customer then decided not to go ahead with the work.
*BEST JOB IN THE WORLD) incredible guys) good luck everyone* 🔥🔥🔥👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
The machine work on here is top notch. What is even more amazing is the fact that Kurtis is self taught!
Well Kurtis, that was a REAL education in problem solving!! I am amazed at your versatility mate! Classic!!
It cost him his hair. The school of hard knocks is difficult.
I really appreciate y'all. I look forward to your videos every week. A small bit of joy in a painful world. Thank you!
No quite the opposite, BIG JOY in a large painful world. Greetings from Ohio, US
👍👍👍 Thank you very much for posting bro! It takes a lot of balls to post video of when things don't go to plan.
I have nightmares about those situations when nothing runs true...
retired wish i had a small workshop again always getting up after watching youtube videos to see what i can make
lack of small machines gets a coffee sit back down & proceeds to watch more tech videos . only rent a room in D/story house with balcony so cant make much noise
even though the renovators next door makes enuff noise all year if i do they old bearded sasquatch below me winges about anything like old that Mrs Jessup :)
😅 Hey mate thanks for watching we appreciate it! 👍😊
Came for the dog STAYED for the amazing machining. Keep up the great work
this is just another reason why your work is so respected you wont do a half assed repair most other places probably would have just done the repair it came in for without checking all around ! nice catch.
How someone treats animals tells me everything I need to know. You are good people 🥰 Plus the problem solving is great to see. Always nice to see a pro do their thing.
Well, most people slaughter and eat animals. A couple of billions at least.
Thank you for all your videos. As far as I'm concerned, they are all excellent.
Had a but of a chuckle when I realized the tail stock couldn't be loosened,as always, Kurtis thought ahead. Clever man that😎. Videography spot on as always too Karen👍,top marks.
hey mate glad you liked it & thanks for watching 👍
You never disappoint, but I found this video to be one of your best. I LOVED the diagnostics on this one and I also liked you two showing that sometimes it's just not working out. I bet it's more than just a bit frustrating to put all this work into figuring out what the hell is wrong with the piece; measuring, making clamps, sleeves, measuring again - just to have to send it back without having really done anything to it in the end. Thank you for this one!
Lizards do not seem to be the brightest animals in Down Under, eh? 😆
As usual - may the whole gang have a great weekend!
Oh I thought that huge chunk of metal might come loose. Now that would be "didn't go as planned".
I'm glad you saved the lizard.
Steps to a plan.
Step 1. Make the plan
Step 2. Follow the plan
Step 3. Watch as the plan fails
Step 4. Scrap the plan altogether
Love the videos👍🏻
😂 this is accurate
Plans are a list of things to go wrong 😂
Who was it who said, "The plan is nothing, planning is everything."
The plan is important but it has to change and adapt when it all goes to shit, the plan is only the starting point 🤪
Awesome. I live for these vids. Not only are they informative and interesting but you guys are so very likeable. Stay safe.
thanks mate!
Bugger, lucky for the lizard though 🐸
Hehehe, I've now watched enough of your videos to think "He's gonna have to weld that eccentricity out and re-bore".
Who's a clever lad then? 🤩🤩🤩
Hey Beautiful people and great dog!
Last 2 weeks I was struck down by a severe pneumonia.
and came across your channel. And how I enjoyed the beautiful videos. what a beautiful job it is. I say keep making beautiful videos and beautiful repairs.
a loving greeting from Mike from Almere, the Netherlands
I was afraid something bad happend from the title, i was expecting the cylinder to fall off the lathe or something. pretty relieved it just wasn't cost effective to repair. A lesser shop would have done a half ass job and collected the repair bill! Top quality service as usual
Those companies are lucky to have you working on their equipment! If you worked on anything of mine, I wouldn’t question it a bit! You are honest and meticulous in everything you do and the filming/editing perfect as always.
Hate the job didn’t work out but I loved the indicating 👍🏼
Still a great video lesson in how to assess a repair along with the animal adventures. What's not to love!?
Thanks for the ongoing effort to bring us your world - it works.
The one thing I was always taught.
If the job setup is a pain in the ass make sure you check that job can even be done. And yet being taught it’s a 50/50 if I do it.
I don't know what's more terrifying, that giant out of balance cylinder turning with such a small clearance to the bed or Kurtis fisting the spindle bore.
Just another day at the office mate
It’s okay , the customer can just run down to the local parts store and pick up a new one …. not 😇
Great job as always Karen and Kurtis 🤘
Sometimes things just don't work out as planned, and this is a great example of that principle in action. It was odd watching the dial indicators work backwards to each other as you worked your way thru the bore; I'm not sure 'flogging' is adequate to describe just how abused this particular strut was. The outtakes are priceless, and you work well together. Thanks for the video!
Today I drilled a hole through an exhaust stud with out nicking the threads. I thought I was hot stuff… then I watched this video 😎💪💪
You guys are getting really good at building a narrative. Leaving us on edge waiting to see if the customer will go ahead with a more expensive repair or not.
I had seen the tail chuck issue but trusted you had a plan!
Great setup and analysis of the problems the strut had. You sure do love a challenge!
Really disappointing to see the customer not go ahead after all the set up and diagnosis, but that’s the way she blows. At least you’ve got a huge clamp now 😂, and you’ll of charged accordingly for the time spent.
Always amazed to see you setup repairs, I did get worried when I didn’t see you do a support band, but pow, no problem, cut one on the angle.
That lizard made me laugh, not sure how you spotted the critter, but hopefully he’ll think twice before climbing inside a excavator.
Thank you Karen for the the great angles you get of everything, you never miss a thing.
Stay safe out there!!
Honest efforts are worth training someone, we need to pass on the mindset of not being a dumbass. Can't teach them how to understand. You're amazing with the work .
definitely agree, hopefully our videos can help a few out there in the world, and maybe one day we will get an apprentice to teach
@@CuttingEdgeEngineering let me relocate from Canada and I'll be your apprentice
@CuttingEdgeEngineering if I were a younger feller, I'd relocate in a heartbeat to apprentice to you. I love learning, and from what I've seen, you would be a first-class teacher.
urtis and Karen.....not sure what the episode tonight is....
but as always, it has to be great .........Karen, your camera
work and editing is so fantastic......always top notch, and

Hey Paul thanks for the great comment mate we appreciate that support. Hope you enjoy this weeks video!
@@CuttingEdgeEngineering so far at 12 minutes, it is fantastic......have a wonderful weekend......Paul
Guys I absolutely love to watch your videos! I did my time with CAT and remember these struts coming through with cracks and carnage abound. Your videos are informative yet humorous and show the just how much experience and expertise it takes to get the job done. The only thing I hope for is that Kurtis can share his skills and train the future generation because he is an absolute wealth of knowledge. Kurtis, I haven't caught your partners name, but she is an absolute gem and has some serious skills behind the camera. It looks like you guys have a great time working together.
Kurtis partner is named Karen, nice comments as well
I'm just watching this video in June '23 and OMG after reading the title and seeing the monstrous homemade counterweight I was holding my breath thinking something was going to fail and fly off.
Thank you for sharing; experiences like this are definitely valuable because nobody lives long enough to learn everything themselves.
Glad it was helpful!
@@CuttingEdgeEngineering That ninja trick for getting access to the bore was worth the watch by itself, never mind the adventure with Derpy the reptile 😅

Great work and photography both, thanks for sharing.

yeah I reckon we will see this one again
After all the set up you did the job ends up cancelled, just goes to show that not everything goes to plan but, it was good to see what can happen when things go awry. Hope you both have a good weekend 👍
Really really good job... Machining and saving the lizard...
Thanks for taking the time to make the video and share it.
First thought when watching him weld the extension/brace in place was" how is he going to release the chuck, with that pipe blocking the holes?"
And then I was just waiting for when he would discover that problem!
Nicely solved!

2mm out of round? Wood turners are like: Wow - pretty accurate. :)
One of the most interesting video you ever made ! The setup is really creative, and the video is reaaly showing how much time we can spend just to setup correctly a part. I think i will show this to a few of my customer so they understand for what they pay for... Thanks again for the quality of your films (including of course the editing !). Vince from France

Many thanks again for your Video on a Friday mornings does make me feel happier ? love watching your engineering skills & bloopers, keep up the brilliant work that you both do. Greetings from England.
Love this channel Kurtis, been a follower for about a year now, also HI to all the Engineers out there, i`m not an Engineer myself sadly but my Father was so i inherited some of his love for precision and quality, i`m a 53 year old Kitchen Installer from the UK with almost 40 years experience who takes great pride in the quality and accuracy of my jobs, i`m also heavily into ancient engineering techniques, specifically how the so called Dynastic Egyptians cut and polished igneous stone like Granite and Diorite which has a Mohs scale hardness of 6 - 8, there are a good few Engineers out there now who believe, as i do, that these highly accurate monuments and statues were cut on machines similar to lathes and mills, the precision on some of these artefacts is to within 100th of a millimeter yet were are told by the mainstream archaeological community that they were done using copper tools, chisels and dolorite pounders BY HAND, anyone who knows Quartz, as i do as we use it for countertops, knows it can not be cut or shaped using copper or bronze tools to this precision, also under a microscope these objects don`t show impact marks which you would associate with chiselling and hammering, they are perfectly smooth, perfectly square and they even pass the light test with an engineers light test you can`t get that accuracy by hand, many of these artefacts show evidence of tube drills cut at a rate that we can`t replicate even with today`s highly advanced CNC machines, there`s evidence that huge 1200 tonne blocks and single columns were cut using a huge overhead circular saw and Live Centre holes in the bases of 200 - 300 tonne single piece granite pillars, there is an English Aerospace Engineer who moved to the States called Christopher Dunn, his qualifications are second to none in the field of Engineering, he`s travelled to Egypt and other locations around the globe and conducted tests on many of these artefacts and he`s concluded they had to have been cut and created using ancient engineering machines, something we are told never existed in pre history yet the evidence discounts that, there is a channel on CZcams called UnchartedX presented by an aussie guy called Ben, his channel is dedicated to exposing these incredible highly accurate artefacts and calls for academia to acknowledge that there was once a long lost forgotten ancient highly advanced civilisation that existed before 12.500 years ago and was erased from human history by what`s known as The Younger Dryas Impact, a theory that has since been proven correct and it`s been peer reviewed, my big ask in all this to all you Engineers out there is to have a look at Chris Dunns work and Ben`s over at UnchartedX, see the evidence for yourselves when you get time and if at all possible lend your expertise and engineering knowledge to their work, the more skilled engineers who get on board the quicker science and archaeology will take it seriously, the theory is that in pre history there was a highly advanced global civilisation that had the knowledge and technical ability to build these ancient monuments and that the Dynastic Egyptians only uncovered, inherited and repurposed these sites thousands of years later once Earth`s climate settled down and human population and society was rebuilt, a big ask i know but i know these guys would appreciate your time and skilled knowledge to either agree with their hypothesis or point out errors in their theories, thanks for reading all this, i appreciate it cheers. Glen, West Midlands UK.
Thanks for this
Another great Friday video from Cutting Edge Engineering and Animal Rescue.
Pulled one of those big boys off a machine that we are wrecking for parts today, gutted the whole truck in one week. me and two handbrakes, (apprentices), black grease and apprentices, glad its Friday!! as always love your work mate
massive job 💪
Nice one guys! I appreciated the more relaxed Kurtis, and the insight into jobs that don't work out. Question: do you still have to charge for an estimation/assessment like this?
I was wondering the same thing. In my shop we charged a flat rate hour time whether the customer gave the go ahead or not. Time is time....
Kurtis would definitely charge for all this time used in the shop. Probably took him half a day.
Time is money, especially when you’re dealing with us set up like that that could take 3 to 4 hours getting it set up
0.6 mm sounds like nothing to us layman but clearly it's a big deal when you want a reliable strut mechanism. Wonderful work guys !!!
Hi Karen, Curtis and Homeless, from Arnstein in Norway (67, male).
I discovered this channel a week ago so I've only watched 100 hours so far :-)
(I'm of course subscribing now, and turned on the bell !)
I've been a computer geek since 1979 and this is probably the most addictive thing I've seen yet.
I have some experience in this type of work, but I am at level 10 out of 100 compared to Curtis.
Everyone likes to follow the masters, and to see the quality in what they do and their attention to details.
Your experience and knowledge from previous work shines through in everything.
CZcams will make you wealthy, and you both deserve every cent you get.
Good, kind, rational, humerous, honest, charming, hardworking people deserve everything good that comes their way.
PS
1. I love all that the technical stuff, but I really want to learn more about you two as a couple/people. Karen deserves even more priase. Does she do *everything* from shooting to publishing? VERY impressive work!
2. 95%(?) of the followers don't know much about your work or the lingo. What about a "lingo course"? Maybe in the descriptions, as text..??
Or, maybe a separate "lingo video"..? Students around the world are following you. You have a huge influence on them.
(OD, ID, "mil", line boring, prep, honing, grinding, ++++ (a real 101 on mechanical work shop lingo....)
3. I use fast forward quite often, especially on repetitive parts #2,3,4,...but that is OK...
4. More about handling/ security/ welding fresh air supply +++
5. And, as I see, you are now focusing on, whenever possible, the real worlds apllications of the parts. I love that.
6. Interviews/praise from you customers.
7. Interviews/praise form your suppliers. From your friends/family.....?
Great video, nice to see how you thought it all thru from the customer's perspective. When someone does something like that for me, I would bring him everything i have that needed work. The quality of your work just leads to integrity, I am sure your customers recognize this.
Cheers mate! Appreciate your comment!
Thank you for showing this, yes, sometimes these things happen. Appreciate your time in making these.
Keep the outtakes coming it's a real relief to see "us" as we go through life making human mistakes and laugh at ourselves later on seeing how goofy we all are in life makes it so much more tolerable
