This CAT 140M Grader NEEDS Repair | Part 1 | Blade Skin & Trunnion Balls

- This 140M Grader is 14 years old and needs a lot of work and repairs done to it. This is a Caterpillar 140M Motor Grader and it’s used for grading and trimming flat surfaces to prep for roads and infrastructure. In this Part 1 video we start with fitting and installing a new blade skin because the original blade is badly worn away and needs to be protected. We then move on to replacing the trunnion ball mounts that attach the blade lift cylinders to the A-frame because those are also worn out. We remove the old mounts by using air arc gouging before fitting and welding on the new mounts. We complete the job by making everything look nice with some grinding and paint.

@@RichardFrost800 I was thinking the same thing, like a beefed up trailer ball, with a 2" (50mm) threaded stud and a giant nut... or welded to a plate that surface mounts with an array of bolts.

Someone who invests in the air filtration helmet that he uses isn’t going to skip something so basic. I am EXTREMELY jealous of the air helmet - those are spendy.
I had no idea that graders could articulate the blade that far. George is such a cool friend.
I was impressed with the articulation as well. If you have a grader, you also have a work bench, lunch table, diving board, etc.😄

For those of you who pointed out the lack of "hearing protection": You might not have seen him normally wearing them(because he has his ear plugs on,as he said) but you can see him when he uses ear muffs,and generally when he's working, he's very careful and mindful of the possible injuries. He is,in so many ways, the roll model of a man that works with his hands and eyes. I don't think I've ever seen someone that works this secure.
I was confused when he mentioned it as I'm sure I've seen his plugs in.
When I was building truck bodies we always used foam plugs as big ear muffs are too bulky and don't pair well with welding helmets, etc.
That would be role model not roll model. Just thought you would want to know.

I've been rescued. Have a back ache, can't move, and there was nothing to watch on the tubes. I had fallen in the dark side of machining. A ray of hope and sunshine awoke me from the depths! I am now blessed with proper machine work!

Probably sounds cheesy... but I was mighty impressed at the skill on the air arc gouging cleanup at the bottom of the trunnions. It's those little things that really show that Kurtis is a master at many crafts. Shout out to Karen too for letting as all see and enjoy!

It's inspiring to see you smoothly executing such clean work, but it's also strangely reassuring to hear the cussing, see the rags burning and watch the tools playing up in the out takes. All of my projects resemble the out takes.

You know, you watch these videos about that guy and his giggling cameraperson, and they are already quite good... And they have this dog, who actually seems to like them amd emjoy being there (besides having the biggest set of brass ones on youtube). Then something else comes up, and you see this bird coming and becoming more trusty every time. Animals have a very accurate sense for people. If they trust you, you are doing something right. So apart from producing great videos, you now show what kind of people you are. That just rounds it up for me. Thanks for the content, thanks for being entertaining and honest, and thanks for being the people you obviously are. Not easy, that.

Excellent work and videos. I am retired 10 years from the same heavy and Highway mechanic and Welding trade as you for 40 years and the one thing I would definitely do if I had it to do all over again would be to use the PPE equipment religiously and definitely purchase and use a respirator as yours for welding. Fortunately I always wore eye and ear protection but lacked on the respirator when welding. Never any serious health issues because most of my work was done outside in the field with plenty of somewhat fresh air. Oh well, too soon old too late smart. My wife enjoys watching your videos with me on occasion and now has a better understanding of what kind of work I did all my life. Thank you, Ed N.E. Ohio USA

So refreshing to see someone who actually knows how to wear soft ear plugs correctly. See so many people wearing them incorrectly barely inside the ear canal at all and doing no good whatsoever - this must be why people don't think you are wearing them as they are so used to seeing them hanging out of people's ears!

It might come as a surprise to someone living in a hot climate, but here in Canada we use graders a lot for plowing snow in the winter months. Keeps the graders working all year round. Have a great weekend you three!
Aaron Preston is that because they have certain ability s like straight shoving or just because they are there. Over here ( the netherlands) there is a blade with a rubber flap on the front of the truck that also has the salt spreading unit ( a rotating disk) on the back. So both go at the same time.
I've seen that in the US occasionally, if we get a bit too much snow for the plowtrucks to handle.
@@henkoosterhof5947 Graders are often used on long rural gravel roads, they can push more snow than a standard plow truck. They’re usually equipped with a blade on the front of the grader or a wing blade on the side to increase their reach. Look up the Volvo Snow Fighter graders to get an idea.

I was going to comment it was strange not seeing a dozer and snow wing on in mid October. In Northern Alberta we usually get snow to stay by October 31, and it hangs around till at least early April. Most oilfield graders live out in the field, and only come back to the shop twice a year, in the fall pre snow for major repairs and upgrades, a thorough cleaning and snow wing install. Then in the spring, to remove the snow wing and repairs and cleaning.
I think my longest daily commute to the grader was 110 kms each way. Thankfully that was only a 3 month job. I was paid from the time I left my driveway until I got back home at night, and the company provided the work truck.
I think I own over 120 audio books, just because most of the remote locations I work don't have reliable radio stations and satellite radio programming has not improved over the years. When you can put in 300 hours a month doing snow removal, once your roads and shoulders are froze in and set, the only worries you have are pickups not paying attention.

The job isn’t done until it looks as good as new. Always impresses me.
Kurtis’s safety around his shop is actually very good. PPE he has covered in other videos and as you watch you will see him use machines, hoists and straps to secure and move tools and equipment around his work area. Speaking of work area he cleans up during and after each project. His explanations usually cover his process and safety is self defined in these commentaries. While he hasn’t said, I presume one big reason for working alone is safety. This is the first time I’ve seen him talking to birds….😂
Nice to see a machine being well maintained and the owners doing repairs when necessary rather than just flogging them until they are too broken to use. As always the quality of your welding leaves me very envious!
With all the bird feeding action lately, I'm beginning to think Kurtis is the Disney princess we all need. 😄

As a former OH&S Implementer and Trainer I knew that with your training, background as well as having sone a full apprenticeship that you always use ear and eye protection. It is good that you have shown the viewers that important part. Well done as always.

You asked a few videos ago if your viewers would like to see you opperate a CNC machine. I think people like watching you because of your precision. So therefore it doesn't not matter if it is a milling machine, drill, CNC, socket set or screw driver. Lets just see you and your skill set. Love your videos if you haven't guessed.
I was also hoping to see you using a hand mixer, bowl mixer and blender. or does Karen manage that end of things?
Many moons ago i was at a jobsite that was being flattened and graded and the funniest thing i've seen (regarding graders) in my life, has to be two of them, parked front to back, with the blades slung out, one for seating one for eating table. I regret to this day, not taking a picture, because it would've been an internet favorite.

Kurtis is a great example of "Pride in Workmanship." Not in the negative sense of the word "pride," but in the sense that he takes the extra steps to ensure the highest quality of the work that he does so that he can be justifiably proud of it.

Brings back memories, 40 years ago, as a 25 year old, I worked on construction sites in Africa repairing these graders, happy days.

If I’m not mistaken that looks like a butcher bird. They extremely intelligent and can be real characters like magpies. Incidentally do you know why they’re called Butcher Birds? It’s because of their habit to hang whatever they catch up in the fork of a tree for easier…. dissection. Usually other birds like sparrows. Here endeth h the lesson!

You know whats great about watching CEE doing this work, there is no BS what so ever. He is a true job shop that does it the best way and most economical way to get the job done. Other machinist youtubers would turn a job like those trunnion mounts into a massive affair that requires days of part positioning, precision measuring on and on. Probably 3 videos or more. Not with Curtis he doesn't blow smoke up ones ass with excessive measuring requirements and unnecessary procedures to just get the job done as a true job shop does. Not taking away from other CZcamsrs but I love the no nonsense how it really is in the real world.

My father was a master mechanic for almost 40 years and seeing you handle your craft reminds me of him in every way. I'm really starting to like George, we have a Steve { British Magpie) , he's been coming here 3 years now since his mum brought him to feed as a fledgling. He got a mate this year and they mate for life in the U.K but they never managed to raise a chick, but his nest building was awesome. I'm proud of him. George is an Australian Butcher Bird, in many ways quite similar in nature as well as looks to an Australian Magpie. They have a beautiful but haunting call (bird song).
Watching you burn those hardfacing rods brings back so many memories, I was a operator/welder at a rock quarry and I literally burned miles of those on rock chutes and crushing machines, yeah miles of them !!

The first part of this video was just like the last one, proving that there's only one way to reskin a Cat.
Regarding hearing protection, I know Curtis is a grown-ass man and knows about these things. I wasn't worried about him as he knows what he is doing. On those ear plugs, I used to work in a stainless wine tank fabricating shop as a helper during my summers of school (not a welder, I didn't have enough knowledge). It was my job to get inside the tank as we were fitting the 4' next ring on to the tank as we built it up. The fabricator would be on the outside with a TIG torch and a dead blow hammer to manipulate the next layer of tank around so it fit up perfectly. I had a hammer on the inside, also moving around the next layer of the tank so it could be tacked in place. I was basically in a giant drum for this process. I did it hundreds of times over the 4 summers that worked there. I am a 41 year old man and still have perfect hearing so I know those things work. Thanks Karen and Curtis for making this content.

I remember one of these we have in the fleet came in for scheduled maintenance and I’ve never seen a grader in my life. We got it into the workshop to do incoming inspection and we were testing all the functions. Not being familiar with any of the functions I managed to make a hole in our concrete floor with grader’s blade 🤣🤣🤣

@@CuttingEdgeEngineering I was just going to make that point, I operated a 24 M for about nine months, had to learn how to grade all over again when I moved back down to road maintenance graders, LOL!! BTW if you stand up before releasing the steering joystick, the wheels will stay at “full turn”, handy to know if you need the extra room while working around front end.

Highway out the front of my place is being widened and I've been watching the graders work. I thought I was pretty handy with an excavator and loader, but those operators are magicians with how many controls they have to work and how precise they can make cuts. I still had no idea they can articulate the blades like how you showed.
I never cease to be amazed at the breadth and depth of your knowledge. You jump into the cab of a large machine and operate it expertly. You are a master machinist, welder, metal worker, the list goes on. You need an apprentice. You are excellent at explaining not only what you are doing but why. You brighten my day.
I love the sound of pneumatic impact taking bolts off. Everybody uses battery power now

If you want better penetration of your ear plugs reach around the back of your head with your opposite hand and pull your ear and backwards. This will straighten the ear canal and allow you to put the ear plug in farther in and give you more protection from sound. Repeat on the other ear. G.

Yes that's the way I do it, you get a really good fit. I normally use Howard Leight Lazers on the strings, really good attenuation without the expense of the really super quiet ones.

I've made my own wrench extension too of varying sizes. They have two opposing flat bar hooks that slips onto the wrench shafts at an angle. Then turn to lock it on. Also turning it over attaching it from underneath to go in the opposite direction, But yours with the bolt on the fork side is great idea too. 💯% Working smarter not harder.
Driving the grader into your new outdoor space really gives some scale as to how large your new area is!

Even the sparks off of an angle grinder will burn pits in the glass. I worked for an agricultural equipment dealer many years ago and we had a dealer recall update on all of the new combines we had sold that year. It was cutting off chain guides in the feeder house and welding an updated set on. We used an angle grinder to clean up the area where we had torched the old ones off and it sprayed sparks all over the front window. We had done two brand new machines before one of the customers let us know it had damaged his window. We learned something new that day.
Kurtis absolutely beyond a shadow of a doubt you are a master at your trade. But I think your wife does a fantastic job with the videos both filming and I assume editing. The videos are always top notch and professionally done. I like the way she teases you and laughs at you. Take it from someone who knows, as long as you make each other laugh you will have a long happy life together.
Just another comment on the fantastic editing job. The videos flow beautifully. It really keeps the interest going. It’s the combination of the skillful work, the great commentary the wonderful editing and the filming that makes the story so compelling and engaging.😀

Please make more use of the "sunglasses" when filming welding, to watch that in real time is just stunning to me. I don´t own a welder, it´s right up there on my wishlist. But watching You weld is a nice substitute, way nicer than just blue light flashing.
