  • Welcome to the internet, and specifically disc golf coaching on the internet. I recently was browsing Reddit, which if you're a content creator can be a dangerous notion if you're feelings are easily hurt, and I saw a post that I thought was pretty intriguing. This post claimed they had found a Circle 2 hack (circle two is anything 34-66 feet or 11-20 meters away from the basket), and I wanted to try it out. So I grabbed my basket, headed to my favorite field, and started testing. Did their hack work for me?? You’ll have to watch to find out!!

    Hey Robbie! I’m the OP from Reddit on that post. Thanks for taking the time to run through this. I think if anything, it shows there’s no hard and fast rule about disc golf, especially when putting. It’s all very much a do what works for you kind of thing. A couple of quick qualifiers. I’ve only been playing for a little under two years, I’m primarily a push putter, and the only midrange I use for putting is a Wombat3 (5/6/-1/0 for those not familiar). Like you said, I think the glide is the primary factor here, but also the weight and thus, wind resistance. Many lid-style putters are typically super lightweight (looking at you, Glitch), and so if there’s any sort of wind play at all, they’re just super unreliable to putt with. The Wombat3 and other similar style mids like Mako3, Fuse, etc. have similar glide characteristics but tend to also be heavier and much more aerodynamic so the wind doesn’t affect them as much. I just find that it works super well for me because I can putt with a similar degree of power with a mid from further out as I would with a putter from closer in and get similar flight paths without it dying out as early. Obviously, at the end of the day we all figure out what works for us, so everyone’s mileage will vary. I’m certainly not offering this as a panacea of putting. I just figured out what works for me and thought I’d share for those who hadn’t tried it. Thanks again man and have a great day!

      Yes this. I'm one of the wierdos who putts with a berg. I use berg anywhere from 180ft in. The further out I am the more anny I use but its typically always a spin putt or kind of a hybrid spin putt/throw if I'm outside circle 2. It works well for me and I have recently been hitting a fair number 40-50ft putts. Because I use a berg, I rarely have a long comeback putt when I miss. I think floaty putters would make you have way to far on comeback putts.

    I preliminary think that the group that goes last is going to be the one that has the most makes because I build up a rhythm when putting. I say this because if I miss with the first I usually make it, or at least throw a better shot with the second, regardless of mold. The second shot gives me room to correct whatever went wrong with the first putt.

    from close i have slight hyzer (stop and pop) as i get to 20ish get flatter, and from outside circle to C2 start adding anni, it tends to add to that straight distance before it dumps, and allows it not to crash as hard, for wind can us a stable mid like Fuse

      @erickyoung8331 Před hodinou

      I also putt with a heavy Mako 3 for distance and heavy wind. If I keep it flat, it has been much more accurate and doesn't require me to change my form at long distances, or when wind moves my putter too much.
      I've been playing for several years, but have some back issues that prevent me from creating a lot of push without "throwing" it when using a less glidey putter outside of about 30 feet.

  • @metalisit
    @metalisit Před měsícem +1

    I putt with a dagger, but like you, I struggle with it in the wind. I also struggle with it on C2 putts. I can't seem to find the right aim point and I tend to miss high as it glides more than I expect. But for C1 putts I'm more accurate than any other disc. For those longer C2 putts I use the Envy, which is my driving and approach putter. It has a lid feel to it and it seems to slice through the air better and flatter. I then use it for windy conditions for all putts, including C1. I've been looking for a do-it-all putter, but just haven't found it. Maybe considering just using the Envy for everyday C1 putts.

    I actually use a star mirage as my long c2 putter. The couple that I have are gummy and feel great. At putter speed the mirage in star plastic goes straight as a string so I can aim right at the bucket. If I miss it definitely can soar past but I've found that leaving myself 20+ foot comebacks has made me a better c1 putter too.
    Thanks!

  • @NickCarroll
    @NickCarroll Před měsícem +1

    I'm a spush putter, and what I do to deal with distance is just spin the disc more. At shorter range my putts are more of a push. It almost looks like a loft putt at the closest distances. I agree with Uli that speed control needs to be more of a focus when putting, as it helps to minimize spit outs or cut throughs, as well as limits the distance on comebackers. I also try to focus on nearly flat putts, or putts with the slightest of hyzer.
    I'll actually start to use anhyzer putts at farther distances, because the disc will often flex out and either drop in the basket, or not travel far - even if it his the basket. Too much hyzer increases the risk of roll aways, so if I can get the disc to land with as little of a fade as possible, that helps a lot.

    Interesting experiment. For a while I was using a dagger for longer putts but ended up switching to my soft magnet as I found it glides a little more than my regular Aviar, plus hope it would not bounce as far away if I missed, and the super saw plastic mike grab the chains a little bit better.

    For a while and just by fluke I found that I was putting best with a really soft and beat in slightly warped harp. I bought it out of my local disc golf shop, shout out to Disc Golf Depot in PDX, and didn't like it for approach shots as much as other discs that I had so just messing around with it, while struggling with my Judge putter, I noticed that I was getting consistently better results with the harp. Finally went with it for a couple of rounds but never seemed right. Now putting with a Supreme Judge and doing okay with it.

    For those C2 and further out, you should try the RPM Piwakawaka. Being the only absolutely neutral disc I have personally thrown, it is point and shoot like a standard putter inside C1. I also often will use the Glitch outside of 25' or so. It might be a case where I am just more comfortable with those discs so your results might now be the same. For what it is worth, they are also the two must used discs in my bag.

    Good idea this has been on my mind too. My throwing putter and putting putter is the same mold in different plastic. I’m throwing with either a hard base or a glow plastic. And putting with a softer medium base. I realized when I’m putting from far away I do better with my throwing putters. I spin put btw. So it makes sense cuz I’m reaching back more and giving it more spin. Especially if there’s any wind at all. Try this theory out

    If I putt with a mid I tend to go with a champion Mako3 these days, I usually do that when it’s a little windier, but not opposed to doing them from distance. A max weight neutron Uplink is also there in the bag…I used to go with a Gpro Stingray for a long time cause I pulled from the hip a lot more and liked the extra understability and glide of it which would compensate for the more hyzer motion in my spin putt and still let it go straight…most of the time though I’m using a tour series fierce / neutron Spin (basically the same with different hand feel) or a Glitch now and definitely switch to something more throw-in-y cause I have the same circle 2 distance issues and my chances go up dramatically to make it with a throw in even if the spread in a ton of practice shots is wider than if I jump or step putt, and I’m comfortable with the comeback putts. Trying to practice that Luke Humphries casual step jumper though cause man does he make it look easy. My main putters are Electron hard Nomads. I do also like Proxy’s as a change up, and Loft Hydrogens when I want less glide for whatever reason cause those are the least glidey putters I’ve ever thrown and will never go too far.

    Putted with all kind of discs, sometimes in windy headwind ill use a destroyer or emperor just because i dont want to bother with getting enough spin on a putter.
    Also have used a hex, reactor, compass, pathfinder, zones, and bergs to putt with for several phases. Sometimes they just feel good in the hand. And the overstableness makes me think of wind a lot less.

  • @Jim3Mix
    @Jim3Mix Před 26 dny

    I often putt from distance with an Elevation Disc Golf Binx, an understable driver made from rubber. The rubber keeps the ground effects low and the Binx stays closer to the basket than a plastic disc. I use a BH or FH throw with a bit of anni. I do all of this because I don’t have much in the way of power but have pretty good “touch.” Even from the edge of Circle 1, I can’t get a push putt anywhere near the basket, but my BH/FH throws are usually fairly close (so I lay up a lot!). I’ve been playing DG just under two years, and I’ve definitely learned my limitations. Play to your strengths, and it usually works out okay.

Same putter, Same height, slightly different aiming point. It’s at about 70 and beyond that I transition to a putter with more glide and that’s the change.

      @NickCarroll Před měsícem

      I agree. I don't step or jump putt. If it's inside circle 2, I'll putt normally. Beyond that I just throw a touch shot. Too often putts at the edge of my range just require too much power, and end up with too little control. A touch upshot can usually resolve that since it requires much less power.

I've found that a base-plastic zone (putter blend/jawbreaker/rubber blend) feels best for me. I putt with Anhi, though witch is slightly unusual but my long putts are prolly better then my short putts compared to other people. I'll putt with Buzz to try to correct my stroke sometimes when I'm hitting the basket to much. It's debatable of what I'm better with. Shark was my original mid Putter when I started 30 yrs ago. I feel like I see people throw their putters where I would be throwing those mids & they come up short & never give it a chance & I get their with less effort.

    at 30-50 ft I am hopeless with a putter so grab my RPM Kea (A mid 4, 3, 0, 3 that now really flies 4, 3, -1, 2.5... Used to use my Pig but that poor beat up piglet is now under-stable at speed)...
    With a power grip (but not a power throw) I face the basket on a 45deg angle (old skool frisbee throw), raise the disk to my back shoulder (backhand) and on an Anhyzer aim straight at the pin if I want to upshot, or slightly lighter and slightly above the basket if I want to go for a putt.. the result is a flex turning across the path then fade falling into the basket...
    and if it misses, it falls long, short, left or right but only a meter or 2 away so in, or a good lay up...
    Bonus, if I pull it off, it looks brilliant with a long S into the basket... (And I often say "I guess I just have to do a really long flex putt from here" which looks even more impressive if I pull it off...
    If I try a straighter approach from that distance, I may get close but a miss usually means 10ft plus overshoot or fade left.. and even if I miss right it's off left and away at that distance...
    When I was using the pig I sometimes putted up 10ft and right 10 ft and it would go straight, then fall in from the side... looked really impressive... but had a hit ratio of probably 20-1. Again tho, left a great lay-up if I missed opposed to a straighter shot that unless I was just laying up, would pass the basket and put in a request for a zip code amendment.

    To me it feels like increasing the number of variables is going to create more problems than it solves for most beginner to intermediate ams. I play in MA2 and have never seen jumping or stepping or any other kind of distance changes work better than regular putting. It's not to say there aren't people who have success, or that switching discs is not going to work, but I think most people don't have the time to master regular putting, let alone getting good enough with different variations to make them matter in a tournament setting.

    Everyone knows player two is almost always better than player one.
    Meaning whether your second putt is another putter our any disc you usually make the adjustment needed to make the putt.

    All of those missed putts aren't helping. I believe Eagle Mc is correct when he says to keep your practice putting to a range you can make consistently.

    I'm shocked that you switch to spin putts at long range.
    I have no range with my straddle spin puts. My push putts have much better range. Wind changes that of course.

    Halfway through the video and I think it's more of just throwing a second putt than switching disc feel completely. You never really think about it, you just grab it and chuck it. Also that is the oddest audio glitch ever. It's like you got a scared man living in the microphone.

    First of all, Reddit is never right about anything. It's where the midwits of the internet go to circle jerk.
    What le redditor was inadvertently discovering is that different discs can allow you to putt with the same stroke at different distances. It's the reason why jump-putts/step-putts are a thing to begin with; it allows you to extend the range of your stroke. Some use a lighter putter, some use a glidier putter/mid and some might combine strategies and jump-putt with a Fuse like Jordan Castro use to.
    I'm personally trying out a more overstable, less glidey putter (Reko X) for C1 putts out to about 20'. When I find that I have to start playing the fade to keep it from fading short and left of the basket, I switch to my old putter, a Reko which is straighter and glidier. This extends my stroke out to about C2, maybe 40'. Anything much in C2+ is usually a situational putt for me so I'm either spin step-putting ala AB with a K3 Reko or K1 Soft Reko or jump-putting ala Barsby or Gurthie with the soft Reko to keep it close.
    It's the using a more brickish putter for close range putts that's been the revelation for me lately.

    Am I the only one that doesn't understand the intro music lyrics... doesn't seem to match the content? The music is fine, but the sung lyric is just weird to hear. 🤷🏻‍♂️
