The skin color looks to have the same issue as I had with Guilliman Flesh when zenithal highlighting black with the Titanium White Liquitex Ink - it just looks like it slides off and stains instead of painting color on. Then I realized the finish on Liquitex was reaaaaaally smooth. When I switched to ProAcryl Bold Titanium White, the finish was a bit more chalky and the paint had a lot more chance to "take". I'd love to see how the Speedpaints look on slightly more matte / chalkier white underpaint.

I think you've grown accustomed to what Contrast has become and not what they were supposed to be. GW originally marketed them as a one coat paint for speed painting and that's not been my personal experience with them or what I've in seen in general by mini painting CZcamsrs, not to mention how some Contrast colors have a much different consistency and are almost like a thin gel instead of acrylic paint. Based on what I've seen of the Speed Paint by various people on CZcams, they seem to be much closer to a true one coat paint, settling in recesses and pooling from high points better to get brighter highlights and darker shades than Contrast.

I wonder if you would get on better if you 1. Gave it more time and testing, you love contrast as you are used to that medium and can work around its flaws , and 2. Go into testing and using the speed paints as a new fun thing where you just play and experiment and not compare and try and get it to do what other paints may or may not do. I have never painted anything. I just printed a house and wanted to try it, bought a primer spray can and the speed paint kit.
I understand what you say about viscosity, other than that I have no other reference. So I found this very interesting.
I wouldn't know anything about the contrast paints, but you got me curious.
I haven't searched through your profile, but perhaps you or someone who follow you know if there's a "how to get started" or "tips for beginners" among your videos?

I recently picked up the hobby of assembling/painting minis. I wasn't sure where to start so I picked up some speed paints. I'm used to painting with acrylics on all sort of mediums, so I was curious about these. The tones are okay for the most part, but I noticed I have to brush a few layers to really get the depth I want. I mixed standard acrylic paint with the speed speed and was able to get a more viscous paint, more depth, and needing less to cover the area. It worked great!

Reaper and Vallejo beat the snot out of either Citadel or Scale 75. I especially hate the Citadel paints, mostly because their pots suck and generally lead to the paints drying out, and from the US the Scale75 are just stupid expensive. For whatever reason, perhaps better distribution deals, the Vallejo and Reaper are equally priced.

IÂŽd say, "speed paint" isnÂŽt a brand name, but a product line (among others) of army painter colors. So the dedicated name tells what theyÂŽre supposed to be used: speed painting. Not much time+skill needed, just cover the miniature in larger areas or in whole with paint. In result, you get a colored model with a washing effect included, larger smooth areas seem even brighter (not really, just what our brain tells us. A snow field appears to be "more white" than a snow patch). No need for washing or blacklining, even highlighting is optional. To do this job, these speed paints have to be quite thin/fluid with clear tendency to rinse into crevices and have to be transparent to an extent. And they do well out of the box, no need to thin out this or that color different. Just lower the intensity with clear speed paint fluid when needed, the consistence stays the same.
In comparison to GW contrast paints I see dropper bottles with steel balls included for rd about half the price. And I see more consistency in between the different colors when it comes to viscosity and transparence/opaque grade. Here, contrast paints differ quite more. Some are more like speed paints, others are more like opaque and almost "creamy" colors out of the bottle. To like this or that color tone more is more or less just a matter of personal taste.
When used for "regular" painting with lining, highlighting, fades etc., speed paints lack viscosity and would have to be more opaque (or stay on the surfaces in a thicker layer without rinsing into the crevices) to get the job done well. Here some(!) of the contrast colors perform better. Or, from another point of view, speed paints are what contrast paints are supposed to be, with all the assets and limits.
Using an airbrush may change the game, it allows to apply speed paints evenly on the surfaces, their transparency allows nice gradients with volumetric shading effects using just one color tone over a fitting primer. And I feel like they work well with the airbrush without much effort to find the perfect consistence. Using them right out of the bottle may not be perfect in any case, but it works.

I'm probably not the only amateur to have been burned buying full sets and not liking/using half... so I will get that blue tone used on the skin of model 2 and go from there!!
To be fair, i have found the contrast paints not great, despite almost universal praise. Colours are nothing like the description or images on GW website (yellow is brown, grey is blue/black) and some need 3 to 4 coats over white primer or are too weak to even bother with
Great, honest and critical review and stunning minis!! I think these products always favour stronger colours and take some adaptation to use effectively. I hope you will still use them again and share the results

These are perfect for their intended use: rapidly bashing out minis that look decent on the tabletop and as a means for beginners to get respectable results. Would rather see figures like those wood elf types than the clarted-on acrylic horror shows that were 'popular' when I were a lad :D

  • @Le_Petit_Lapin
    @Le_Petit_Lapin Pƙed 2 lety +2

I think you should mention that you can't go and paint on top of them without sealing the player with varnish first, because the SpeedPaints reactivate with water (including the water in the acrylic you're trying to paint on top with). It makes them a massive paint in the arse to use with a paintbrush.
Also you probably want to keep your painted minis away from any water or drink spills.

I wasn't too impressed with the brush results, but then again, I wasn't really impressed with contrasts brush results either when I first saw that. I think Speed Paint is closer to what Contrast was supposed to be though, a one coat paint that both highlights and shades over white/grey primer. Contrast fell short of that for me, so for beginners or people that don't enjoy the painting side of the hobby as much I can see Speed Paint being quite invaluable. For myself, I think i'll be passing on this, outside of a couple of colours that stick out as better than the rest.

I'm thinking these will be great for us in the board game hobby. Will be a quick way to improve the generic tabletop minis we get in the box. Curious how these will work over the plain plastic, since some are already colored, guess you could just do a quick varnish on it then use these.

As I wrote, "in my opinion" :) Of course, each style has its own preferences :) Now I am going to the old school of painting with oil paints, it is not "speed painting" anymore, but I am internally glad at the thought.
