This guy intentionally made it look like he switched the card so penn and teller would go with the most obvious thing which is he switched the card at the end.
Here's the thing to y'all: they CANNOT lie; if they say there wasn't a switch but there was, they are punished. Because they have to write down the entire procedure and routine and give this document to the show's producer so he can verify the veracity of everything.
@@olavsanchez909it's not that they *have to show* how their trick is done, this is a TV show; without the designated producer slash veteran magician and others the team can't make sure the trick works as it's meant to on the cameras live because that's different than just performing it for a live audience. The cameras can't "tip" how the trick is done. Often the producer(s) and the magician(s) work together to improve the trick for the show once they're there because, again, this is not a format most magicians have practice at before coming here. Basically everyone but the audience and Penn and Teller might know how a trick is done, the fun isn't in lying to win, it's in sharing your skills on TV. It's happened that magicians misunderstood the hints Penn gave at the end and said they didn't fool them but later between production and P&T talking to the magician about the trick they realized they did, and P&T always own up to that. The point of this show is the showcase magicians who might not have the exposure they deserve or need, P&T always explain that and that's why they only get one guess. Often a trick can be done half a dozen different ways, P&T know them all well, but they can only guess one method, if that's not the correct one they say they're fooled.
How he snuck that card into his mouth after the head slap was just amazing. I wouldn't be able to pull that off without ruining the ducttap especially not that fast
@Formerly Sivertsen Hej Norge. Yes we have both and it's most of the time easier to find the cheap fake one. That's the problem with internet sometimes. It's much easier to find the most common answer, which not always are the right one.
Vaselined chin of duct taped guy, gets card palmed to him just before gets slapped on back of head. The fake switch at end of gag was to lure Penn and teller into wrong conclusion thus being fooled.
Mr.Melon no hes put it in sooner, see when hes cutting tape and pulls it, it shows no stickiness to his chin/lips. he has folded and slid it in to his mouth at an earlier point, cant see when because of editing

How they did it: 1:27 he bends/marks the card so peter can find it 1:54 peter finds the card 2:17 audience distracted peter folds the card 2:50 he is palming the folded card 2:57 hands come to face, peter makes a strange noise perhaps to loosen the duct tape, and puts the card in his mouth 4:08 duct tape at bottom left of peters mouth comes off easier than the rest of it maybe it was wet 4:19 fake switch if they really pulled it off and the whole thing hinged on peter sticking that card in his face without anyone noticing, than they earned whatever they got man, fake switch or not.
***** Just came here to post my findings about the transfer from his hand to mouth myself. I think when the tape is first placed over his mouth his tongue is quickly stuck out to create moisture and a sort of 'tunnel' to provide easier transfer for the folded card.You see him licking his lips for lubrication (vaseline could also be applied beforehand to negate the effects of the adhesive for ease). Thanks and well done on the breakdown though, I had missed the folding and palming.
Such a simple trick yet so powerful in the audience. I'm stunned that Penn and Teller feel for it but that's because they tricked P&T to think it was a switch at the end by using the tongues. Great idea to misdirect then into thinking a different move happened. Here it goes: The beginning of the duct tape has about an inch of sticky and then about 6 inches of non sticky part on it so when he takes the guys face, there's actually no glue where his lips are. He goes around a second time putting only a small overlap so it will stay in his face but goes shortly over the past that isn't stocking to his face. Then he has passed him the card already as he handed him the cards so Peter put the card away in his jacket up front. Then when he smacked him in the head you can see him bend ALL the way down and with the speed of lightning the dude slid the card into his mouth. Just let me know where the position of the tape is before and after the bending down scene. After that the real card is in his North and obviously no need for a switch but they made it look like that so they can win the "FOOL" TROPHY. Great job misdirecting then into a different solution. So simple yet so effective. And guys, I have running tricks and giving the answers but I have to do it since everyone is guessing so many weired guesses that I just wanted to give the answer and say this:. Please guys just enjoy the trick and even if you know the answers don't disrespect the owners of the performance by making it look like they did it bad. That was a great performance. This is the reason U REALLY like magic performance tricks on CZcams that have the comments section locked so no one can type anything in there and Ruin the whole act. LoL. Just be entertained and leave it alone.
I like how they actually go for what the show's name is about: Fool P&T. So many of these are just doing magic tricks that sure work for the audience, but has only a very small chance of fooling P&T.
I saw him do that "switch" and wondered if it was real. It was so obvious it had to be either deception or he fucked the entire trick up in one move. Well played guys, well played.
They didn't exactly fool them, more so just wasted their first guess on a bait. Any magician could do a number of baits to force P&T to guess one of many - and fail nearly every time. That's not really fun for the audience to see though, and the show needs to appeal to an audience or it ceases to exist.
Those tweezers with the fold out switching pockets were pretty neat...even if they were used in a cheap way to make it look like an obvious switch even though they didn't.

I'd be pretty annoyed if I was Penn & Teller. The two performers knew P&T only get 1 guess, so they threw a fake switch in at the end to bait them into a wrong guess. Blergh.

If you think 'sound results' are more important to magic than actually mystifying your audience, fine I guess. I think it's insulting. I think these guys had a great act, but they manipulated their way through by taking away from their own magic.

I think these guys broke "Fool Us" as a show. They put in a fake switch move at the end to misdirect Penn and Teller, after the guy with the duct tape puts the real card in his mouth when he gets slapped and bends over (trick tape allowing easy access to his mouth) After this, every show would be magician after magician throwing in fake moves and Penn and Teller having to guess which of the moves were genuine and needed to complete the trick making the format untenable.
No they didn't because that's what tricks are. Deception Penn and teller challenged them to fool them and they did.It doesn't matter if they have to guess which move Is correct because they should of caught the move when they did it.
Expecting them to catch the move is ridiculous. "The hand is quicker than the eye". Just because they know a move is taking place, doesn't mean they can actually spot it and determine if its genuine. It's not in the spirit of the show. In fact, if you listen to Penn's podcast, you can hear from him that they are very upset about people on the show doing this. The truth is, they could easily tell how the trick is done, but if performers are just throwing in a bunch of fake moves, it's impossible to determine which is real. Bottom line, they weren't fooled. They just guessed one move over another and were wrong. Supporting this kind of thing is a slippery slope. Now any lame trick will "fool them" as long as the magician throws in 20 fake moves. Even the greatest magicians in the world would need slo-mo cameras and different angles to actually see every move and its authenticity. Hopefully future acts don't replicate this, or the show is going to get boring very fast
Chris Easton maybe so but during Jay sankeys performance penne said at the end" I think you know that we know rising card "as if there is one method for doing it.What kind of answer is that? You can't just say I think you know that we know how you got that card in your mouth.At some point they are going to have to guess how its done and if they can't spot a painfully obvious red herring move then that's their fault. They said" fool us" they didn't say how. If it was a cheat WHAT they did then it wouldn't still be aloud.
You need to understand something key. This is a television show and they do rehearsals. During rehearsals, all acts are screened through the producers. Only they are told how the trick is done, and it's up to them to determine if Penn and Teller understand how the trick was done. This act, did NOT use any fake moves during rehearsals. They essentially lied to Penn and Teller, because this is NOT the act as it was to be performed. The only reason it is "allowed" is because its a television show, and they are not about to throw away footage of an act, when it costs so much to produce. It's also shot in front of a live audience, so you can't re shoot. As soon as P&T said "you fooled us", they are committed to offering them a spot to open for them... OR in the cases of acts that can't stay in Vegas, they get money... which I imagine is what these clowns took. I think anyone who really appreciates magic understands that this was done in poor taste. Penn stated on an episode during a trick "Magicians use lying, cheating, swindling and stealing to fool you. Those techniques are all immoral, unless they are done with consent." This loophole performance was not done with consent. Had the producers seen the fake move in the rehearsal performance, they would have put a stop to it. However, they weren't shown the final performance intentionally, in order to cheat without consent. It simply comes down to honor and integrity. You either have it... or you're Chris Angel.
You don't get it. The point of the show is for the magician to perform a trick as he would to an audience, not to mislead magicians with fake switches .
So what's next? Adding a bunch of obvious 'switches' so it's impossible to know which one is the real switch? Yeah the point is to fool P&T but doing so in that fashion is pretty lame, don't you think?
Still amazed by this in 2017. Notice at the beginning he starts with the mouth. That's because the part of the tape over the mouth was not sticky. He loads the card when his head was slapped. It was a load, not a switch. Besides Producer Johnny Thompson sees the trick in rehearsal so they are not able to just lie.
To all the people saying there was a card switch. They have judges on this show that know how the thricks are done. If they lied judges would have called them out on it. Also Judges have to aprove a fool so no they didn't switch.
Mihovil BeckV Actually no. There was a dude that falsely admitted he didn’t fool Penn & Teller when, he says at least, that he secretly fooled them and the other judges said nothing. Plus, I believe an Australian magician actually fooled them, but just accepted that he didn’t fool them and way later, he gotta trophy. That duct tape guy put the card in his mouth when he got smacked. It’s clearly obvious. Sometimes Penn & Teller Have to let people win I guess? Cuz if they never get fooled, there would be no show.

@Winston Mcgee First, this is in the much earlier days of Penn and Teller before the show was nearly the size and scope it is now. Second, Dan Harlan basically lied in his performance of card-toon. Rather than lying, he did sleighted the deck as Penn and Teller were coming on stage to examine the deck, and when he gave them the deck it appeared to be a completely ungimmicked card-toon deck. He got a trophy, and it angered a lot of people, and he defended himself by saying that he never wanted to perform card-toon on the show because literally everyone knows how it's done, but he was given no choice because the producers would only allow him on the show if he performed that trick. Third, Jay Sankey did fool them, with a torn-and-restored card performance of his own creation, in which he never actually tears the card at all and makes it appear that he's tearing it (And literally makes mouth sounds to simulate the sound of tearing a card). Penn and Teller incorrectly believed he performed a traditional torn-and-restored, and did a switch. Jay did not correct them, let them believe he had not fooled them, and later released a CZcams video showing how he actually did the trick. (Which he's since removed, and now sells as an instructional download.) Jay actually pissed Penn and Teller off so much that they demanded the producers restructure the way the show was presented after his performance. Fourth, there are innumerable people who have appeared on this show that obviously didn't fool Penn and Teller, but they put on a good enough performance that they were awarded the trophy. Asi Wind being the most obvious example here, with his wooden box full of cards that he's for some reason allowed to have sent off stage mid-performance with no opportunity for inspection. But Asi Wind is Asi Wind so... The same goes for Richard Turner. Richard Turner is a master at what he does, but his decks are specifically designed for him, and they basically amount to very intricate stripper decks, punch decks, and markings. Contrary to belief, while legally blind, his condition is extremely rare (CBS) and he's able to see colors, shapes, and patterns, in a way that other people actually can't. (I'm being really free and loose, his methods are way more complicated than that and it's taken him a lifetime of adaptation to be able to read the extremely minuscule differences in his cards, but they exist. He's so adept at feeling the differences in cards that USPCC uses him to test theirs for moisture density) But he can't open a new deck of Bikes, let someone else shuffle it, and do what he does. It's highly unlikely Penn and Teller don't know this, but Richard Turner is one of the most respected magicians in the world. With all that said, I'm not saying Penn and Teller were lied to here. They were wrong, and pocketing the scissors was a bait-and-switch. But the idea of the show being flawlessly executed and there being no room for Penn and Teller to either be lied to or for them to pretend they were fooled when they weren't is nonsense. At the end of the day, it's their show, and they call the shots.
This performance pisses me off. It is actually a _really_ good performance and a decent trick. But they weakened the magic just to bait P&T into calling it a "switch". They _did_ make switching moves, but it was fake and just for magicians to see. I guess special misdirection for magicians still counts, but it doesn't feel right to me.
Search for "Magician's Magic" on youtube. There's a great video from P&T's magic and mystery tour, in which Teller talks about "Magician's Magic". Teller had seen a local magician do the cups and balls trick, and obviously spent the whole time following all the little tricks and sleights the magician was pulling. Finally, the magician asks "How many balls under each cup?" and Teller, like a good sucker, plays along and says there's one ball under each cup. The magician lifts the cups, and sure enough, one ball under each cup. Now, to the average Joe, that's a pretty lame trick, but it completely caught Teller off guard. He closes, saying, "I don't think there's a nicer thing you can do for a fellow magician than use his knowledge to fool the heck outta him". That's what these guys did, and that's why Penn and Teller were some completely thrilled when it turned out there was no card switch.
Alec Thomson I've seen that video and I don't think it counts here. It's less of a double bluff and more a case of weakening the magic. In the cups and balls, the audience expects one thing but something else happens. That's the effect. In Teller's case, the double bluff aims to preserve that effect. In this performance, everyone expects the card to be the same. The trick is to make them scratch their heads as to how you did it. If the audience can think of one or more valid ways, it doesn't make the trick better, it makes the trick suck. It doesn't matter if they guess wrong solution. Imagine someone doing a card trick, offering all the standard reassurements (fanning out the cards, having the audience make choices, etc), and at some point the magician puts the deck in his pocket and takes another one out. It doesn't matter if he didn't change the deck, that's simply something you shouldn't have seen. Now anything is possible. That's what they did. They took it off sight, making any result plausible. It was only in the discussion that it was revealed that they didn't switch, and that part is not supposed to be part of the performance. Had there been no discussion, the trick would have just looked stupid, as far as magic goes. And it was unnecessary, too. I don't think anyone would have paid attention at the right moment to figure out their trick.
In other performances of this trick it's clear that the card is NOT switched. Here probably he fakes the switch to double fool them....but actually it's hard to believe that they didn't. Maybe they should have done it the normal way, way more effective. Anyway....outstanding!!
They should have in every video someone explaining the rules and telling people how the magicians can´t lie to penn and teller so we would have less lazy and dumb people comenting in every video on how they did it even after they say ITS NOT HOW WE DID IT. THERE IS NO SWITCH AT 4:17. God daaaamn.
Jdub jsjs to fool penn and teller. They didnt add that part to the act to pleasure your sorry ass. They added the fake switch to fool P&T. Some might say it was a cheap trick to throw them off. I leave that up for people to decide. But they did fool them, which is the point of the show.
Even if they didn't perform a switch, it was blatant and obvious bait. Them tricking p&t into guessing wrong ISN'T the same as 'fooling' them. In the very first episode, Penn says the purpose of the show was 'giving back that first feeling we got when we were 5 years old and saw something vanish. We want that feeling again'. Early on, performers strived to create unique, inspiring illusions and tricks. Now they're just pretending to perform a trick badly.

+Alex Hetherington, he's right, though. Fooling someone means you've done something that they can't explain or figure out. Doing something that they CAN figure out, but throwing in a false move is a cheap shot. It's strictly done to exploit the rule that they only get one guess.
fool verb To trick or deceive (someone); dupe. Fooling someone is making them think something contrary to the truth. It has nothing to do with whether you can explain it or not. They guessed wrong. They were fooled.
I know how they did it: the dude started with the card in his mouth before the duck tape covers his mouth. Once the OTHER dude took it in his hands then he swapped the card out in his palm. Pen and teller, sign me up!
I just love the amount of "they switched cards, they lied, end of story." -comments. when that clearly wasn't the case. People just salty when they didn't realize the trick themselves, or thought they saw something fishy which was just a distraction.
It wasn't a distraction. It wasn't misdirection. It was a false move done strictly to exploit the one guess rule. Fooling someone means to do something that they can't figure out. Penn & Teller could absolutely figure this out. Penn went into a rant on this about Jay Sankey when he did it. Doing something the unconventional and less efficient way while making a false move of the right way is just a cheap shot.

The show is called "fool us" and you all got fooled. That is the point, or else how do you fool some one who knows magic and tricks when you do magic and tricks? Even I understod that switching would be to obvious to do. It was clearly showed. Penn and Teller should not fell for this.
The problem is that they did it exactly so that you could have done that, and that's not impressive or interesting. So you just have to guess if they did that or something else, and it's a lame bait and switch instead of an innovative trick.
i think when the duct tape dude is "organizing" the cards is when he folds it. then, when he gets slapped, he tucks it under the duct tape into his mouth. if you try to lick your lips with duct tape covering them, it comes off really easily, so i bet thats how he made a gap to put the card in.
I'm no magician, but when he put the tweezers away, the card went completely out of view, so the only logical thing I can think of is that he switched it there.

Retz - It was to make Penn and Teller think it was a switch so haye could fool them. If they lied, Penn and Teller wouldn't air it. There'd be no point in doing that. It wasn't real duct tape and he put the car there as he was peeling it away.
Theme Master actually no it was real duck tape. If you lick duck tape enough and get it wet enough it will start to come off. When he smacked him all the guy had to do it put the card into his mouth under the tape.
They have judges who know how it’s done. I have seen several shows where they go to the judges. He didn’t switch it. That was way too obvious. I also thought that immediately, when I saw the trick.
I have done many variations to this trick. SUPER SIMPLE. At 3:18 - 3:20, he begins to fold the card and compresses it between the deck. At the 3:55 when he hands him the scissors, the folded card goes with it. This takes place in a rather clumsy way. At 3:58 he slips the card under the (not so sticky/ you cannot buy from your local hardware store) tape and between his lips. Hence the bulge on the outside of his teeth, until he is able to open his mouth. The rest of the show was just to try and throw PnT. It is also apparent that the passing of the scissors is so important, that he begins to stutter at his next sentence, nervously.
There was no switch. Peter found the card, folded it and shoved it up under duct tape which he had loosened on the right side of his face ( the other guy blocked view ). Notice when he tears off the duct tape there is only one layer and then the tape is spliced so it only covers top lip.
When he hit him in the head and he bowed down he put the card in his mouth..... maybe? and the palming at the end was meant to bait P and T into the guess...... maybe?
If they didn’t switch it at end when it was covered up, and instead did all the elaborate fake reveals to do some kind of handoff then peter put it in, why ruin it with the switch? Just to fool P&T? It ruined the trick for me
I'm swedish and had followed them for some time before this show. So this was not a new magic trick for me. Normally (always) Jonas are very carefull in his handling of the card from the time he takes it out of Peters mouth, until the reveal, so to make sure that you as an audience know that the card revealed, are the card he picked out of the mouth of Peter. (Making it blatantly clearly visible the whole time, carrying it with his fingertips spreading out his fingers on his hand etc) Having seen this act a lot before, and then seeing this, made the false switch even more stand out. And I was like, WTF are they doing, ruining a good trick like that?? As soon as you as an audince member think you know exactly how a trick is done, there is no magic, even if it is done in a totaly other way. So 2 good magicians in my world went down the drain with this.. I would rather have seen them not beeing able to fool Penn and Teller, than see this.
That was a cheap bait. If there wasn't a switch at the reveal, why else would he palm the entire folded card? It's an ad hoc trick for the show. It's unimpressive. The possibility of an obvious switch diminishes the whole effect; it doesn't matter if it wasn't. By the way they presented it, the effect was no different than if they had done a switch.
Ex0dus111 There's a reason why magicians have third parties inspect their props. They spread the cards to show it's not a trick deck. It's done to make the trick more impressive by eliminating the possibility of trickery in that area. You show your props aren't tricks, you don't show the part where you force a card and you don't show the part where you do the switch. 4:13 He covers the whole card with his hand before he folds it out. They knew the judges had one guess, and the judges took the most obvious one because it was too obvious. It means they didn't think the act can stand on its own. They gamed the system.
They put in the fake switch move for the same reason magicians use beautiful assistants and why Penn does the juggling during their version of the cup and balls trick, misdirection. These guys just put that move in so that Penn and Teller would jump on it as the obvious and would stop looking for other ways. If he doesn't do that move then they know the genuine card was in the man's mouth and thus they will be looking for ways that could be achieved. In effect they are metagaming the magicians. I think its a great strategy for success in this particular situation.
Stuart McCabe The premise of the show was to have acts are so amazing *even Penn and Teller can't tell how they were done*. The ones that get through deserve a spot in Vegas. This act was not one of them because it's not that Penn and Teller couldn't figure it out but because because a technicality was exploited wherein Penn and Teller were allowed only one guess that time. I'm not arguing about efficacy. I'm saying that it's cheap. It diminishes the acts that genuinely baffled Penn and Teller. You could game Penn and Teller many different ways using mediocre acts with multiple red herring techniques then the system would be a simple game of chance. Imagine their Vegas shows filled with mediocre acts because of that.
My hypothesis: - 4:04 duct tape sticks to the cheeks but no to the mouth, therefore allowing him to... - 2:56 ...slam the card in his mouth (you see the arms *rushing* to his head) Someone agrees? :)
The signed card is folded. There was never a switch at the end. There was never ever a card switch. If they wanted.. they could've just handed the card in that "clip" to penn and teller. But they didn't, they made it look like a switch, to fool them, and most of you guys in here.

Listen to yourself, if a magician shows you a card trick and secretly switches the cards, then goes on to blatantly show you a fake switch just to trick you into thinking that's when he switched the cards, would you be impressed?

So the guy could just lick the fucking tape so it would become loose, and when he got slapped he had the moment to put the card in his mouth , under the tape. Just because you didn't understand how the trick was done, doesn't mean the cheated.
I think I saw the trick. It's a rigged deck based on an old trick with 6 cards of different colours where you don't see the one picked but you then take them and find the one they chose. Here's how it goes. The cards have one corner that is made to be thicker and stiff, so at the 1:04 mark you see the deck fanned out for Teller to pick one. But watch the 1:06 mark where his right hand rotates the deck as he gets the pen out to sign the card to make it amazing that it came out of Peter's mouth . The 1:21 mark show the card going back in the deck but the hard corner is 180 degrees from the rest of the cards by the deck rotation done as the pen was pulled out as the distraction . Now watch the 1:31 mark as he asks for a Number from Penn to give him time to thumb through the deck to feel the stiff corner where the deck stops , he does it twice very quickly and it shows up on the big screen in the backdrop just behind his hands . Now the 1:40 mark where he just had turned his back as he walked to Peter which hid the card being taken out , he hands the deck to peter minus the signed card . Somewhere prior to the 4:18 mark while focusing on Peter he got the staple gun and then scissors which may be the when he put the card in the box to be hidden until he gets the scissors and then the tongs , or he placed it in his jacket to get later as the tongs went in the pocket and not back in the box . The 3:47 mark with the staple gun held up , you can see his last two fingers pulled in to the palm as if to hide something for when he goes back to get the scissors . He walks away as his back is to the crowd and the signed card can be ready for the swap which I think is done at the 4:16 mark where his left hand hides the card just before it is unfolded, but watch how he uses his left hand to pull open his jacket to slip the tongs in the pocket . His right hand at the 4:18 mark seems to palm the card as the left hand cover for it and it gets put in the left hand to open up and show it's the signed card. He's good because I never saw the actual card being moved around , only the times he was able to move it and keep hidden . Folding it may be the tough part , but the black suit and tongs give him cover while Peter is the distraction . Penn has said in the past that they can know how a card trick is done but what he looks for is the actual swap so overt they can't be fooled. But not seeing each move makes the trick great because it's the crowd that must also be impressed .
What's next? Magicians adding a bunch of fake switches to make it impossible to know which switch is real? The point of misdirection is to make it look natural and unnoticeable. This was the exact opposite of that and it's bogus.
Yeah, I find this ridiculous, magician should not add fake switches in order to fool someone (though it fools magicians really well). They should be so good people have no idea how it is done, not wondering which switch/sleight was the real one.
if it was not a switch, then why did he cover the card at the end? whats the point of putting it in big tweezers if your gonna cover it with your hand. perhaps he removed some gimmick that got it into his mouth.
I also watched the Britain's Got Talent performance of this trick that was mentioned in another comment. That performance clearly proves that there is no card switch at 4:18. The BGT performance clearly reveals the correct card immediately after removing it from Peter's mouth. Therefore, the "card switch" at 4:18 of this video was clearly a sneaky fake move to attempt to fool Penn & Teller into thinking it was a card switch, and it worked. In both versions, when Jonas smacks Peter in the back of the head and Peter bends over, there are three big indications that something is going on at that moment: 1. We lose sight of Peter's face, which is in sight of the audience at all times during the entire rest of the performance (even if we don't see it on the video because the camera was looking elsewhere), 2. Peter's hands are briefly near his face and mouth, and 3. Jonas is attracting everybody's attention away from Peter with his continuing explanation/dialog. This was more obvious in the BGT performance, maybe because they were rushing it (possibly because they fooled two of the judges into buzzing them with the fake reveal). Therefore, we are not meant to see what Peter is doing while he's bent over. Therefore, this is the moment that the folded card is inserted into Peter's mouth. I believe that the duct tape is gimmicked so that it's not sticky or has minimal stickyness at a specific spot on the tape, which Jonas lines up over Peter's mouth. Jonas hands the cards over to Peter in a way that Peter will know exactly what card is the chosen card. Maybe Jonas slightly bends the card, maybe he just hands the deck over with a pinky break already cut to the chosen card. While shuffling and "manipulating the chosen card to the 11th position in the deck", Peter manipulates the chosen card to the bottom of the deck where he can palm it. While Jonas has us distracted, Peter is able to covertly fold the card. When Jonas smacks him on the back of the head, Peter bends over and pushes the card through the gimmicked duct tape and into his mouth, pressing the tape back down to his face afterwards so it looks like nothing happened. Finish up with the extraction of the real card, the fake card switch move (in this version, at least), and the final reveal.
To everyone who won't stop saying "They switched the card in the end." Look up "misdirection". Also, they did this trick on Britain's got talent, and he did not do a fake switch there so you can go watch that if you still feel smart after that.
this was kinda cheaty, because they did a very obvious move that looks like a switch which would explain this a lot more easy so you dont need to search a second explanation. But this should not count as fooled because if in that step they would change the card, then it would be another way to do the trick. The fact they dint do it that way it does not matter, they need to leave the audience with the thoght that there is no way they can figure out how they did the trick.

They did a very obvious move in which it could have explained the trick. It will be cheat if I am a magician and I made the same trick that everybody else do it with a move of hands and I fake that move of hands but I use instead other trick that is even more silly than the first one. Then I win because penn and teller choose the most obvious case. Is wrong.. Read the rules of the show. That is not allowed.

Some of the magicians go on there with your bog standard trick that won't in anyway fool them but that isn't what the show is about its about fooling Penn and teller shame on them for not catching the move.
The taped up guy is palming the folded card at 2:50. When he gets smacked in the back of the head about 2:52, he bends forward and stuffs the bent card in his mouth.
2:56 the card was never transferred. The dude with with the tape had the deck the whole time in his hands. When he gets hit in the back of the head he quickly stuffs the card in his mouth through a slight opening all in one second flat. Watch in 0.5 speed to see it.
the guy who took the signed card from Teller kept it with him, the card in the mouth is just a random one. The guy with the card swapped the mouth-card with the right one he had from the beginning when he took it form teller when puttng away the scissors on his pocket. So yea, the guy with the duck tape never had the signed card, surprise! Easy.
Ya that the easy way to to it, and what pen and teller thought they did, and asked whether they did a switch. But they said they didn't. So they probably just sneaked in the card into his mouth before the reveal, which he had plenty of time to do, especially if they can temper with the duck tap before hand.

First of all, the way the trick is done must be submitted in writing before you even go on, so no, there was no card switch. Second, the show is called "Fool Us" , the object is too fool them not quote from one of you idiots down there "it made it so obvious weather it was real or not" , the whole idea of covering the card was to make them think that's how they did it, and it worked perfectly.
Most of y'all got it wrong, 3:55--dude hands his friend the scissors and the card at the same time. Notice the duct tape guy shoves the card under the duct tape--creating the illusion that he is trying to free the tape only to cut it @3:57. Watch his left hand and not the scissors hand. Again, he literally shoves the card under the duct tape to put the card in his mouth then proceeds to move his left hand to the side of his face as if creating a crease for the scissors to cut.

Here's the thing to y'all: they CANNOT lie; if they say there wasn't a switch but there was, they are punished. Because they have to write down the entire procedure and routine and give this document to the show's producer so he can verify the veracity of everything.

@@olavsanchez909it's not that they *have to show* how their trick is done, this is a TV show; without the designated producer slash veteran magician and others the team can't make sure the trick works as it's meant to on the cameras live because that's different than just performing it for a live audience. The cameras can't "tip" how the trick is done. Often the producer(s) and the magician(s) work together to improve the trick for the show once they're there because, again, this is not a format most magicians have practice at before coming here. Basically everyone but the audience and Penn and Teller might know how a trick is done, the fun isn't in lying to win, it's in sharing your skills on TV. It's happened that magicians misunderstood the hints Penn gave at the end and said they didn't fool them but later between production and P&T talking to the magician about the trick they realized they did, and P&T always own up to that. The point of this show is the showcase magicians who might not have the exposure they deserve or need, P&T always explain that and that's why they only get one guess. Often a trick can be done half a dozen different ways, P&T know them all well, but they can only guess one method, if that's not the correct one they say they're fooled.

Just came here to post my findings about the transfer from his hand to mouth myself. I think when the tape is first placed over his mouth his tongue is quickly stuck out to create moisture and a sort of 'tunnel' to provide easier transfer for the folded card.You see him licking his lips for lubrication (vaseline could also be applied beforehand to negate the effects of the adhesive for ease). Thanks and well done on the breakdown though, I had missed the folding and palming.

Thinking you hit it one the money. Notice the tape is a little bit higher up later in the trick as to earlier in the trick when it was first put on.
Such a simple trick yet so powerful in the audience. I'm stunned that Penn and Teller feel for it but that's because they tricked P&T to think it was a switch at the end by using the tongues. Great idea to misdirect then into thinking a different move happened. Here it goes:
The beginning of the duct tape has about an inch of sticky and then about 6 inches of non sticky part on it so when he takes the guys face, there's actually no glue where his lips are. He goes around a second time putting only a small overlap so it will stay in his face but goes shortly over the past that isn't stocking to his face. Then he has passed him the card already as he handed him the cards so Peter put the card away in his jacket up front. Then when he smacked him in the head you can see him bend ALL the way down and with the speed of lightning the dude slid the card into his mouth. Just let me know where the position of the tape is before and after the bending down scene. After that the real card is in his North and obviously no need for a switch but they made it look like that so they can win the "FOOL" TROPHY. Great job misdirecting then into a different solution. So simple yet so effective. And guys, I have running tricks and giving the answers but I have to do it since everyone is guessing so many weired guesses that I just wanted to give the answer and say this:. Please guys just enjoy the trick and even if you know the answers don't disrespect the owners of the performance by making it look like they did it bad. That was a great performance. This is the reason U REALLY like magic performance tricks on CZcams that have the comments section locked so no one can type anything in there and Ruin the whole act. LoL. Just be entertained and leave it alone.
I like how they actually go for what the show's name is about: Fool P&T. So many of these are just doing magic tricks that sure work for the audience, but has only a very small chance of fooling P&T.

They didn't exactly fool them, more so just wasted their first guess on a bait. Any magician could do a number of baits to force P&T to guess one of many - and fail nearly every time. That's not really fun for the audience to see though, and the show needs to appeal to an audience or it ceases to exist.

As you can see at 4:19 there is no switch. It´s fake to distract them from the actual trick.
The flaw of this show is that they only have one guess on where the trick happened. Therefore they do alot of fake tricks, so that they have to choose between them -> easier chance for them to pick the wrong one. The artist wins.

I think these guys broke "Fool Us" as a show. They put in a fake switch move at the end to misdirect Penn and Teller, after the guy with the duct tape puts the real card in his mouth when he gets slapped and bends over (trick tape allowing easy access to his mouth) After this, every show would be magician after magician throwing in fake moves and Penn and Teller having to guess which of the moves were genuine and needed to complete the trick making the format untenable.
No they didn't because that's what tricks are. Deception Penn and teller challenged them to fool them and they did.It doesn't matter if they have to guess which move Is correct because they should of caught the move when they did it.
Expecting them to catch the move is ridiculous. "The hand is quicker than the eye". Just because they know a move is taking place, doesn't mean they can actually spot it and determine if its genuine. It's not in the spirit of the show. In fact, if you listen to Penn's podcast, you can hear from him that they are very upset about people on the show doing this. The truth is, they could easily tell how the trick is done, but if performers are just throwing in a bunch of fake moves, it's impossible to determine which is real.
Bottom line, they weren't fooled. They just guessed one move over another and were wrong. Supporting this kind of thing is a slippery slope. Now any lame trick will "fool them" as long as the magician throws in 20 fake moves. Even the greatest magicians in the world would need slo-mo cameras and different angles to actually see every move and its authenticity.
Hopefully future acts don't replicate this, or the show is going to get boring very fast
Chris Easton maybe so but during Jay sankeys performance penne said at the end" I think you know that we know rising card "as if there is one method for doing it.What kind of answer is that? You can't just say I think you know that we know how you got that card in your mouth.At some point they are going to have to guess how its done and if they can't spot a painfully obvious red herring move then that's their fault. They said" fool us" they didn't say how. If it was a cheat WHAT they did then it wouldn't still be aloud.
It's currently in its fourth season and has already been renewed for a fifth, lol.
You need to understand something key. This is a television show and they do rehearsals. During rehearsals, all acts are screened through the producers. Only they are told how the trick is done, and it's up to them to determine if Penn and Teller understand how the trick was done. This act, did NOT use any fake moves during rehearsals. They essentially lied to Penn and Teller, because this is NOT the act as it was to be performed. The only reason it is "allowed" is because its a television show, and they are not about to throw away footage of an act, when it costs so much to produce. It's also shot in front of a live audience, so you can't re shoot. As soon as P&T said "you fooled us", they are committed to offering them a spot to open for them... OR in the cases of acts that can't stay in Vegas, they get money... which I imagine is what these clowns took.
I think anyone who really appreciates magic understands that this was done in poor taste. Penn stated on an episode during a trick "Magicians use lying, cheating, swindling and stealing to fool you. Those techniques are all immoral, unless they are done with consent." This loophole performance was not done with consent. Had the producers seen the fake move in the rehearsal performance, they would have put a stop to it. However, they weren't shown the final performance intentionally, in order to cheat without consent.
It simply comes down to honor and integrity. You either have it... or you're Chris Angel.

Still amazed by this in 2017. Notice at the beginning he starts with the mouth. That's because the part of the tape over the mouth was not sticky. He loads the card when his head was slapped. It was a load, not a switch. Besides Producer Johnny Thompson sees the trick in rehearsal so they are not able to just lie.
To all the people saying there was a card switch. They have judges on this show that know how the thricks are done. If they lied judges would have called them out on it. Also Judges have to aprove a fool so no they didn't switch.

@Winston Mcgee First, this is in the much earlier days of Penn and Teller before the show was nearly the size and scope it is now.
Second, Dan Harlan basically lied in his performance of card-toon. Rather than lying, he did sleighted the deck as Penn and Teller were coming on stage to examine the deck, and when he gave them the deck it appeared to be a completely ungimmicked card-toon deck. He got a trophy, and it angered a lot of people, and he defended himself by saying that he never wanted to perform card-toon on the show because literally everyone knows how it's done, but he was given no choice because the producers would only allow him on the show if he performed that trick.
Third, Jay Sankey did fool them, with a torn-and-restored card performance of his own creation, in which he never actually tears the card at all and makes it appear that he's tearing it (And literally makes mouth sounds to simulate the sound of tearing a card). Penn and Teller incorrectly believed he performed a traditional torn-and-restored, and did a switch. Jay did not correct them, let them believe he had not fooled them, and later released a CZcams video showing how he actually did the trick. (Which he's since removed, and now sells as an instructional download.) Jay actually pissed Penn and Teller off so much that they demanded the producers restructure the way the show was presented after his performance.
Fourth, there are innumerable people who have appeared on this show that obviously didn't fool Penn and Teller, but they put on a good enough performance that they were awarded the trophy. Asi Wind being the most obvious example here, with his wooden box full of cards that he's for some reason allowed to have sent off stage mid-performance with no opportunity for inspection. But Asi Wind is Asi Wind so...
The same goes for Richard Turner. Richard Turner is a master at what he does, but his decks are specifically designed for him, and they basically amount to very intricate stripper decks, punch decks, and markings. Contrary to belief, while legally blind, his condition is extremely rare (CBS) and he's able to see colors, shapes, and patterns, in a way that other people actually can't. (I'm being really free and loose, his methods are way more complicated than that and it's taken him a lifetime of adaptation to be able to read the extremely minuscule differences in his cards, but they exist. He's so adept at feeling the differences in cards that USPCC uses him to test theirs for moisture density) But he can't open a new deck of Bikes, let someone else shuffle it, and do what he does. It's highly unlikely Penn and Teller don't know this, but Richard Turner is one of the most respected magicians in the world.
With all that said, I'm not saying Penn and Teller were lied to here. They were wrong, and pocketing the scissors was a bait-and-switch. But the idea of the show being flawlessly executed and there being no room for Penn and Teller to either be lied to or for them to pretend they were fooled when they weren't is nonsense. At the end of the day, it's their show, and they call the shots.
This performance pisses me off. It is actually a _really_ good performance and a decent trick. But they weakened the magic just to bait P&T into calling it a "switch". They _did_ make switching moves, but it was fake and just for magicians to see. I guess special misdirection for magicians still counts, but it doesn't feel right to me.
Search for "Magician's Magic" on youtube. There's a great video from P&T's magic and mystery tour, in which Teller talks about "Magician's Magic". Teller had seen a local magician do the cups and balls trick, and obviously spent the whole time following all the little tricks and sleights the magician was pulling. Finally, the magician asks "How many balls under each cup?" and Teller, like a good sucker, plays along and says there's one ball under each cup.
The magician lifts the cups, and sure enough, one ball under each cup. Now, to the average Joe, that's a pretty lame trick, but it completely caught Teller off guard. He closes, saying, "I don't think there's a nicer thing you can do for a fellow magician than use his knowledge to fool the heck outta him". That's what these guys did, and that's why Penn and Teller were some completely thrilled when it turned out there was no card switch.

I've seen that video and I don't think it counts here. It's less of a double bluff and more a case of weakening the magic.
In the cups and balls, the audience expects one thing but something else happens. That's the effect. In Teller's case, the double bluff aims to preserve that effect.
In this performance, everyone expects the card to be the same. The trick is to make them scratch their heads as to how you did it. If the audience can think of one or more valid ways, it doesn't make the trick better, it makes the trick suck. It doesn't matter if they guess wrong solution. Imagine someone doing a card trick, offering all the standard reassurements (fanning out the cards, having the audience make choices, etc), and at some point the magician puts the deck in his pocket and takes another one out. It doesn't matter if he didn't change the deck, that's simply something you shouldn't have seen. Now anything is possible.
That's what they did. They took it off sight, making any result plausible. It was only in the discussion that it was revealed that they didn't switch, and that part is not supposed to be part of the performance. Had there been no discussion, the trick would have just looked stupid, as far as magic goes. And it was unnecessary, too. I don't think anyone would have paid attention at the right moment to figure out their trick.

In other performances of this trick it's clear that the card is NOT switched. Here probably he fakes the switch to double fool them....but actually it's hard to believe that they didn't. Maybe they should have done it the normal way, way more effective. Anyway....outstanding!!

It wasn't a distraction. It wasn't misdirection. It was a false move done strictly to exploit the one guess rule. Fooling someone means to do something that they can't figure out. Penn & Teller could absolutely figure this out. Penn went into a rant on this about Jay Sankey when he did it. Doing something the unconventional and less efficient way while making a false move of the right way is just a cheap shot.

i think when the duct tape dude is "organizing" the cards is when he folds it. then, when he gets slapped, he tucks it under the duct tape into his mouth. if you try to lick your lips with duct tape covering them, it comes off really easily, so i bet thats how he made a gap to put the card in.
He probably uses vaseline, because the tape didn't stick to his beard.

Retz - It was to make Penn and Teller think it was a switch so haye could fool them. If they lied, Penn and Teller wouldn't air it. There'd be no point in doing that. It wasn't real duct tape and he put the car there as he was peeling it away.
Theme Master actually no it was real duck tape. If you lick duck tape enough and get it wet enough it will start to come off. When he smacked him all the guy had to do it put the card into his mouth under the tape.
They have judges who know how it’s done. I have seen several shows where they go to the judges. He didn’t switch it. That was way too obvious. I also thought that immediately, when I saw the trick.
I have done many variations to this trick. SUPER SIMPLE. At 3:18 - 3:20, he begins to fold the card and compresses it between the deck. At the 3:55 when he hands him the scissors, the folded card goes with it. This takes place in a rather clumsy way. At 3:58 he slips the card under the (not so sticky/ you cannot buy from your local hardware store) tape and between his lips. Hence the bulge on the outside of his teeth, until he is able to open his mouth. The rest of the show was just to try and throw PnT. It is also apparent that the passing of the scissors is so important, that he begins to stutter at his next sentence, nervously.

There was no switch. Peter found the card, folded it and shoved it up under duct tape which he had loosened on the right side of his face ( the other guy blocked view ). Notice when he tears off the duct tape there is only one layer and then the tape is spliced so it only covers top lip.
When he hit him in the head and he bowed down he put the card in his mouth..... maybe? and the palming at the end was meant to bait P and T into the guess...... maybe?

I'm swedish and had followed them for some time before this show. So this was not a new magic trick for me. Normally (always) Jonas are very carefull in his handling of the card from the time he takes it out of Peters mouth, until the reveal, so to make sure that you as an audience know that the card revealed, are the card he picked out of the mouth of Peter. (Making it blatantly clearly visible the whole time, carrying it with his fingertips spreading out his fingers on his hand etc) Having seen this act a lot before, and then seeing this, made the false switch even more stand out. And I was like, WTF are they doing, ruining a good trick like that??
As soon as you as an audince member think you know exactly how a trick is done, there is no magic, even if it is done in a totaly other way. So 2 good magicians in my world went down the drain with this.. I would rather have seen them not beeing able to fool Penn and Teller, than see this.

It's an ad hoc trick for the show. It's unimpressive. The possibility of an obvious switch diminishes the whole effect; it doesn't matter if it wasn't. By the way they presented it, the effect was no different than if they had done a switch.
That part was ONLY for Penn and Teller, I doubt he covers the whole card with his hand before he folds it out.
Ex0dus111 There's a reason why magicians have third parties inspect their props. They spread the cards to show it's not a trick deck. It's done to make the trick more impressive by eliminating the possibility of trickery in that area.
You show your props aren't tricks, you don't show the part where you force a card and you don't show the part where you do the switch.

They knew the judges had one guess, and the judges took the most obvious one because it was too obvious. It means they didn't think the act can stand on its own. They gamed the system.

They put in the fake switch move for the same reason magicians use beautiful assistants and why Penn does the juggling during their version of the cup and balls trick, misdirection. These guys just put that move in so that Penn and Teller would jump on it as the obvious and would stop looking for other ways. If he doesn't do that move then they know the genuine card was in the man's mouth and thus they will be looking for ways that could be achieved. In effect they are metagaming the magicians. I think its a great strategy for success in this particular situation.
Stuart McCabe The premise of the show was to have acts are so amazing *even Penn and Teller can't tell how they were done*. The ones that get through deserve a spot in Vegas. This act was not one of them because it's not that Penn and Teller couldn't figure it out but because because a technicality was exploited wherein Penn and Teller were allowed only one guess that time.
I'm not arguing about efficacy. I'm saying that it's cheap. It diminishes the acts that genuinely baffled Penn and Teller. You could game Penn and Teller many different ways using mediocre acts with multiple red herring techniques then the system would be a simple game of chance. Imagine their Vegas shows filled with mediocre acts because of that.

The signed card is folded. There was never a switch at the end. There was never ever a card switch. If they wanted.. they could've just handed the card in that "clip" to penn and teller. But they didn't, they made it look like a switch, to fool them, and most of you guys in here.

I think I saw the trick.
It's a rigged deck based on an old trick with 6 cards of different colours where you don't see the one picked but you then take them and find the one they chose.
Here's how it goes.
The cards have one corner that is made to be thicker and stiff, so at the 1:04 mark you see the deck fanned out for Teller to pick one. But watch the 1:06 mark where his right hand rotates the deck as he gets the pen out to sign the card to make it amazing that it came out of Peter's mouth .
The 1:21 mark show the card going back in the deck but the hard corner is 180 degrees from the rest of the cards by the deck rotation done as the pen was pulled out as the distraction .
Now watch the 1:31 mark as he asks for a Number from Penn to give him time
to thumb through the deck to feel the stiff corner where the deck stops , he does it twice very quickly and it shows up on the big screen in the backdrop just behind his hands .
Now the 1:40 mark where he just had turned his back as he walked to Peter which hid the card being taken out , he hands the deck to peter minus the signed card .
Somewhere prior to the 4:18 mark while focusing on Peter he got the staple gun and then scissors which may be the when he put the card in the box to be hidden until he gets the scissors and then the tongs , or he placed it in his jacket to get later as the tongs went in the pocket and not back in the box .
The 3:47 mark with the staple gun held up , you can see his last two fingers pulled in to the palm as if to hide something for when he goes back to get the scissors .
He walks away as his back is to the crowd and the signed card can be ready for the swap which I think is done at the 4:16 mark where his left hand hides the card just before it is unfolded, but watch how he uses his left hand to pull open his jacket to slip the tongs in the pocket .
His right hand at the 4:18 mark seems to palm the card as the left hand cover for it and it gets put in the left hand to open up and show it's the signed card.
He's good because I never saw the actual card being moved around , only the times he was able to move it and keep hidden .
Folding it may be the tough part , but the black suit and tongs give him cover while Peter is the distraction .
Penn has said in the past that they can know how a card trick is done but what he looks for is the actual swap so overt they can't be fooled. But not seeing each move
makes the trick great because it's the crowd that must also be impressed .

I also watched the Britain's Got Talent performance of this trick that was mentioned in another comment. That performance clearly proves that there is no card switch at 4:18. The BGT performance clearly reveals the correct card immediately after removing it from Peter's mouth. Therefore, the "card switch" at 4:18 of this video was clearly a sneaky fake move to attempt to fool Penn & Teller into thinking it was a card switch, and it worked.
In both versions, when Jonas smacks Peter in the back of the head and Peter bends over, there are three big indications that something is going on at that moment:
1. We lose sight of Peter's face, which is in sight of the audience at all times during the entire rest of the performance (even if we don't see it on the video because the camera was looking elsewhere),
2. Peter's hands are briefly near his face and mouth, and
3. Jonas is attracting everybody's attention away from Peter with his continuing explanation/dialog.
This was more obvious in the BGT performance, maybe because they were rushing it (possibly because they fooled two of the judges into buzzing them with the fake reveal).
Therefore, we are not meant to see what Peter is doing while he's bent over.
Therefore, this is the moment that the folded card is inserted into Peter's mouth.
I believe that the duct tape is gimmicked so that it's not sticky or has minimal stickyness at a specific spot on the tape, which Jonas lines up over Peter's mouth. Jonas hands the cards over to Peter in a way that Peter will know exactly what card is the chosen card. Maybe Jonas slightly bends the card, maybe he just hands the deck over with a pinky break already cut to the chosen card. While shuffling and "manipulating the chosen card to the 11th position in the deck", Peter manipulates the chosen card to the bottom of the deck where he can palm it. While Jonas has us distracted, Peter is able to covertly fold the card. When Jonas smacks him on the back of the head, Peter bends over and pushes the card through the gimmicked duct tape and into his mouth, pressing the tape back down to his face afterwards so it looks like nothing happened. Finish up with the extraction of the real card, the fake card switch move (in this version, at least), and the final reveal.
To everyone who won't stop saying "They switched the card in the end."

The taped up guy is palming the folded card at 2:50. When he gets smacked in the back of the head about 2:52, he bends forward and stuffs the bent card in his mouth.
2:56 the card was never transferred. The dude with with the tape had the deck the whole time in his hands. When he gets hit in the back of the head he quickly stuffs the card in his mouth through a slight opening all in one second flat. Watch in 0.5 speed to see it.

the guy who took the signed card from Teller kept it with him, the card in the mouth is just a random one. The guy with the card swapped the mouth-card with the right one he had from the beginning when he took it form teller when puttng away the scissors on his pocket. So yea, the guy with the duck tape never had the signed card, surprise! Easy.
Ya that the easy way to to it, and what pen and teller thought they did, and asked whether they did a switch. But they said they didn't. So they probably just sneaked in the card into his mouth before the reveal, which he had plenty of time to do, especially if they can temper with the duck tap before hand.

The point of this show is that they tell the staff how the trick is performed so they can't just go "no thats not how we did it lol"

First of all, the way the trick is done must be submitted in writing before you even go on, so no, there was no card switch. Second, the show is called "Fool Us" , the object is too fool them not quote from one of you idiots down there "it made it so obvious weather it was real or not" , the whole idea of covering the card was to make them think that's how they did it, and it worked perfectly.
This is similar to Teller drowning in the tank with the signed card in the scuba mask
Most of y'all got it wrong, 3:55--dude hands his friend the scissors and the card at the same time. Notice the duct tape guy shoves the card under the duct tape--creating the illusion that he is trying to free the tape only to cut it @3:57. Watch his left hand and not the scissors hand. Again, he literally shoves the card under the duct tape to put the card in his mouth then proceeds to move his left hand to the side of his face as if creating a crease for the scissors to cut.

2:17 audience distracted peter folds the card
2:50 he is palming the folded card
2:57 hands come to face, peter makes a strange noise perhaps to loosen the duct tape, and puts the card in his mouth
4:08 duct tape at bottom left of peters mouth comes off easier than the rest of it maybe it was wet
4:19 fake switch
they have to perform the trick with the producers and reveal how it is done so when they said they did not switch the card that was the truth.
When theres a moment the card is not seen, theres always a sleight of hand. 4:18 was just too obvious

+ThankYouESM No. The trick is performed in front of the producers of the show and after the performance in the rehearsal it is explained to the producers. When Penn and Teller make their guess, the producers will know when the performer is lying.

A: During your first rehearsal you have to perform your effect to a room full of the producers... Then you explain how it works to them.
