WAU X Plus E-Bike Review | InsideTech Review.
The popularity of e-bikes has been on the rise for the past few years, but relative newcomers WAU wanted to fill a gap they’ve found in the market: that there simply weren’t any 'long range' e-bikes out there. And so, they’ve come up with the WAU X Plus, and with its impressive 100 mile range, are claiming to have the longest range e-bike in the world! Combining this 'best in battery' performance, with advanced security features and innovative designs like their world’s-first indicator lights…this is certainly an e-bike that stands out from the crowd!

Holy shit man this is some serious video making right here. Criminal that it isn’t at least over 100k views. Thanks for the review dude. Perfect
That's awesome to read, thanks a lot! 👊🏼
Incredibly good review, thanks. You covered everything I wanted to know about the bike and in great detail I found the whole review compelling viewing.
That means a lot, thank you 🙌🏼
The light package is the best feature. Make it USA spec (750w motor & 28mph top speed) add torque sensor, more comfortable saddle and you have a winner.
A very professional review. Thank you so much!
Ah I appreciate that, thank you!
I hope WAU gave you a "bonus" for this review. Well done Mate. One of the best bike reviews ive seen for any ebike for that matter. Very informative, detailed and covered everything. Do you review a lot of Ebikes?
Thank you very much! I certainly do a lot of research on them (not just for review purposes but my own interest too). But I don't think ebikes are a particularly important topic for my audience - so I don't actually do them for InsideTech often at all. This was my first for the channel (but not the last!)
Great work. Awesome review
Thank you 🙌🏼
A comprehensive review and very professional presentation , much appreciated, thank you.
Thanks a lot!
I'm buying one for Christmas. Stoked!
Ah nice! I hope you enjoy it!
Awesome review.
Thank you 🙌🏼
Detailed review.. excellent
Thank you 🙌🏼
The FIIDO L3 costs $999 and does 75 miles to a charge for me. In fine overhere.
Doesn't even state 75 miles on website lmao
Good review. Nice tidy bike .Seems good value for the range it gives. In my case this is a priority.
Thank you. Yes the range is fantastic 💯
Good review. New to ebike. I live up a really steep long hill. Can one use the throttle half way up the hill for a short rest on the legs? Does that works?
Thank you!
So it might help you, but not necessarily (it depends how steep the hill is and how much torque is needed to turn the pedals). Remember that you won't get any more 'torque' going uphill than the maximum amount the motor can provide. So essentially if your bike is working 'as hard as it can' going up a steep hill, then engaging the thumb throttle won't actually do anything. It will only engage and give you a boost if you've not met the torque threshold pedalling uphill.
So for example if you're riding in level 3 or something and reach the steep part of the hill, you can take it easy and pedal slowly and the bike's motor will engage and help you out. If you're under the power (torque) limit at that incline and speed, then you can use the thumb throttle to boost you up the hill. But if the bike is already working as hard as it can (power limit reached) then increasing the assist level or using the thumb throttle won't actually help you until you reach the flatter ground again.
You can see this in action and hear my talk about this at 9:30!
Nice and tidy review 👌
Thank you very much! 🙌🏼
Why make out that people who use miles and not kilometres are old fashioned, in England speed and distance signs are in miles and mph
Yes that’s right. And it shouldn’t be the case. The metric system exists for a reason and would make a lot more scientific sense to be implemented across the board.
To each their own though. Those that prefer miles, fine!
I hope they paid you for this! Incredible content, thank you
That's very kind, thank you!
Doubt it they've gone bust 😂
In the advanced settings, I am unable to deresrrict my bike. Stays stuck on 25kph - there isn’t an option to adjust like in this video.
Thank you 🙏
Thanks for watching!
Top review! ❤ Just one question- do you know what torque the motor outputs? No such info anywhere on WAU’s website!
Thank you! I'm sorry, i'm not quite sure on that spec (i've been through all my notes too). Every spec I was able to find on the bike is shown at 2:50. You'll have to ask WAU for any others - sorry I couldn't be more helpful!
@@insidetechltd No worries - I found the answer from WAU - 55nm, so not bad but a little shy of VanMoof’s current offerings
@@tejlander7296this aged well! Rip vanmoof
Great review. Is the difference between the ‘off-road’ and ‘on-road’ versions are the inclusion of the screen and throttle? Are you actually not allowed to use the off road version in the uk even if you don’t use the throttle or go above 15mph?
Thank you. Looks like WAU have changed the website a bit now but yes, I believe those are the differences between the two versions.
As for the legality around the use of the bikes, I honestly wouldn't want to advise 100% because i'm no expert in this field, and I wouldn't want to get you in trouble either! My view would be that if you don't de-restrict the speed and go above the legal limit, that should be fine. And throttle use should be private land only. But i'd check with either WAU or authorities to get confirmation 👍🏼
@@insidetechltd thanks for the reply. I tried one out yesterday and really like it. My only concern is what the actual range will be if using it on assist level 5 and then using the throttle quite regularly. Can you comment on what your actual range has been like?
@@mattbird7313 I saw a delivery driver on CZcams get 40 + miles on the highest setting and then get home so around 50 miles.
I really like the bike but it's a big decision for me to get this or a Honda PCX 125.
As I see inside tech reply if u took the battery out of the bike for charge will the security alarm still work?
No - this is a flaw in my opinion. I think a non-removable backup battery that lasts overnight just for the alarm whilst the main battery is out would've been great
Do you think all the features of the display could be incorporated into the app so that you could use your phone instead of a separate display? You would only need a USB port then.
Yes. And in fact this is a route some other e bikes go down. There are pros and cons to it really. Pros are that it’s all the functionality you need (every app, phone calls etc) right there. And the interface would be something more familiar and responsive. But the cons are that you’re leaving your phone out and exposed to the elements/potential damage, you’re using up your phone’s battery rather than the bike (compensated for with the USB?) and you’d have to remove/set it up each time. Whereas the bike’s display is just there and ready to go on exactly the right ‘app’ each time.
Most phones have dust and water resistance now, so having your phone out and exposed isn’t as big a deal. But it’s a tough call, I can see benefits to both methods 🤷♂️
Could you please tell me what the top speed is when unlocked?
25 mph. At the time I made this video, WAU stated it was 20 mph max, so this may be the case now. But when I tested it I was able to go up to 25 max instead
I'm buying one was going to use your discount code but wau says cant use the code and cycle to work scheme
Ah i'm not sure about the cycle to work scheme, sorry 😬
Anyone know where to the get the app for the GPS tracking from? No longer seems to be on the app or play store...
That’s weird! The app wasn’t available when I tested the bike, I was using a third party app called WanWayTrack. I’d ask WAU directly what’s going on though 🤔
@@insidetechltd Thanks! I've mailed them, it's not stopped me getting the bike wont lie I just ordered it. Your review sealed the deal :D Thank you it was a great review!
Oh cool! Well I really hope you like it now, otherwise it’s my fault! 😅 (I’m sure you will, I loved it)
need help please i order this bike but with standard display can i 30mph on standard display or need upgraded
You need the upgraded display to access the menu that lets you unlock the higher speed
I love this bike but what lets it down is the motor.
I would only buy a bike with a Bosch ,Shimano or a motor with recognized name .
Excellent review . But while ebikes are so expensive ( £900 to replace the battery FFS) I'll stick to my small motorcycle, it's a similar price , doesn't need charging and will do 50 mph all day and although doesn't return Honda's 188mpg claim , mine does average over 130mpg making any distance no problem . I hope the price comes down for these bikes but currently you're better off with a small motorcycle. I'd love to see this change. 😁😁
Thank you!
How much do you reckon you spend on petrol though? I get your point about the battery, but I reckon you could easily rack up that much in fuel costs 😬
@@insidetechltd it's a bit like comparing apples and oranges I know but as I work 11 miles from home I am filling up once a month around £15 , also the bike originally £2850 losses very little when resold . Don't get me wrong I really would like an electric bike ( or scooter for that matter if they're legalised) , but current peddle assist bikes are just too expensive. Also I am not limited to 20 or so miles without pedalling .
Yeah that's fair enough! Sounds like it's best for you 👍🏼
Very nice bike but there's no room for a water bottle or a tool kit which is frustrating
There is space and a mounting point on top of the frame. But yes, some space in between the frame (the regular spot) would’ve been nice
Discount code not working for anyone else?
Sorry, I believe it's expired now
@@insidetechltd No worries. Ended up buying the bike anyways lol. Appreciate the quick response 🙂
Nice - I hope you enjoy it!
I'm 168cm tall, would this bike still be okay for me?
Yes I think so. That’s within the quoted rider height and I’m 178 cm myself and had more than 10 cm room to spare I’d say!
I am 195cm, had a wau for just under a year and rides great. Would recommend a saddle upgrade if they still offer that.
How much can it travel in only throttle
Dying to know this, can't get an answer
I asked wau. They said 45-50 miles
It looks good...
It's not
Whats top speed?
20 mph
I can't get the discount code to work
I’m sorry about that! Just contacted them to find out what’s happening and will get back to you asap!
It appears the discount has now ended, I’m sorry about that!
@@insidetechltd Thank you. Very disappointing as I was deciding between the WAU and the Giant and the £100 off had just swayed me to buying the WAU. Back to the drawing board..
Riese and Müllwer Supercharger and SuperDelite have ranges of well over 100 miles.
Nice!
@@insidetechltd it’s great to see the eBike business thriving in Nottingham, the home of the Raleigh bicycle company.
It really isn't the longest range ebike - Riese & Muller have many models with 1000Wh+ dual batteries
Well they wouldn’t be legal under e-bike legislation then!
@@insidetechltd You're getting mixed up between the power rating of the motor and the capacity of the battery. that is ebikes 101 :-)
Yes you're right, sorry. I first read this as the power output. It's interesting that they're not up front about the available range though - so i'd need to test the bikes myself to see which has the longest range
@@insidetechltd I have one of their Bike with a 1000Wh dual battery. I got 88 miles with a mix of levels 2 & 3, it estimates 123 miles on the eco setting
Well with those numbers, it still wouldn't beat the WAU X Plus! 😅
Maybe I'm mistaken but I feel like the title is a lie? Isn't Delfast ebike the longest range bike with over 200miles range?
I'm not sure when the bike was released so perhaps it came out after this. But also the title is really just a play on the claim that WAU make for their bike. I've noticed the claim is still there in the marketing today, so they would be the best people to ask about how accurate the claim is!
not the Delfast is not a legal Ebike, on public roads it classed as a motorbike and you need a licence. You also cannot use a Delfast on shared or cycle paths, and you require a full face helmet.
@@mikewade777 the title was about the longest range ebike though. Not the longest range road legal in EU/NA etc
@@iamiq has to be in the same category, and they clearly are not.
I just can't justify it 😢 for two and a half grand I'll just get a bike with an engine 😂 also I'm an avid cyclist and I'm scared that if I go electric I would never be able to go back to a mechanical bike, does that make sense? Like if you were in culinary school and learned the trade with £10 knives then upgraded to £100 knives you would never be want to use a £10 set again. Maybe I'm just being an old fossil, the cycling world seems to be going more and more electric and they're getting more affordable, practical etc. Who knows, we'll see in a few years when I want a new bike. But I'll stick with leg power for now. 🤔
I know what you're saying, but you'll always have the option to not turn the bike on, or to use a very low power setting. I took this bike on a long ride on a very low power setting, so I basically pedalled the entire thing (the motor just kicked in occasionally up steep hills or when pulling away after stopping) - so it was still a workout. And look, if you find yourself enjoying it more using the motor...so be it! You always have the choice. It's not as though you have to use the highest settings every time just because you have an e-bike 🤷♂️
Avid cyclist here and you are correct once you try electric you don't really care to go back😂
Man I hate those sodomizing saddles
A cadence sensor for 2K 😂 no way
I think it does a little bit more than that 😅
Delfast has 200 mile rand and is the world record holder
I don't think it's a street legal model though, you have to get those bikes registered - it does depend on local laws though
Your feet are in an incorrect position when pedalling, just thought I'd let you know.
They’re possibly not in the most efficient position, but that’s how it was comfortable for me!
😂😂😂
Or with the money you can buy an older second hand Mercedes-Benz with tons of options and ride in comfort
I never knew Mercedes made an E bike, cool to know, I will look out for one.
Stay way from this company guys. I'm not joking. If you fancy waiting for a bike for 70 days without any communication then this bike company is your best option.
Rude and ignorant bunch of people. I don't feel like spending £3k on a bike without getting any reassurance of your bike coming to you.
Stay clear from this bike
Delfast EBike Hass a range of more than 200 miles. The mega mundo cargo e bike has a range of 800 kilometers. Do not lie..... to us.
It's not my claim, it's WAU's 🤷♂️
Delfast is classed as a motorbike not legal without a licence not an ebike, the 800 is the weight not the range of the mundo.. "Do not lie to use'' ....idiot🤦♂️
