CHICHICASTENANGO - Today we’re exploring Chichicastenango a city in the highland mountains of Guatemala that’s home to the Chichicastenango Market, which is the biggest indigenous Mayan market in Central America. It’s a colorful overdose of all things you can buy, and a gathering of Mayan culture and customs. I was excited to visit to learn and to try as much street food as possible.
We met up with Roberto, our local Guide to Chichicastenango Market. He first took us around the market. We then saw the main fruits and vegetables section, everything pretty much fresh right out of backyards. We then tried Guatemalan chicharrones - or fried crispy pork. It was as tasty as always, and loaded with onions to give it a sweet and delicious taste.
After chicharrones we continued with our food tour in Chichicastenango Market on to eat at one of the best stalls in the entire market that’s known for their hen chicken soup and their special kettle cooked fried chicken. Both dishes were delicious, especially with some fresh tortillas. We also stopped by another similar stall to eat some more chuleta’s, a variety of fried meat cutlets.
In addition to all the delicious food, there’s plenty of areas of the market to explore and many Mayan cultural churches and cemeteries to wee while you visit.
It was another excellent day in Guatemala on this ultimate Guatemalan food tour!

After seeing these Videos on Guatemalan Foods & the Maya Indian Culture, I would rather go there than to Mexico ! I was stationed in the Panama Canal Zone for 4 years with the U.S. Army from December 1973 to February 1977 and lived downtown in Panama City across from the Panama University for 1 year before getting assigned to Gov. Housing on Fort Clayton and Loved the Food of Panama so I know that I would love the food of Guatemalan as well !

That amazing market was like sensory overload, and the fried chicken looked so good. The love, kindness, and friendships are felt in your videos. I’ve been following you for years on CZcams. Each video and each year becomes more personable. I get teary eyed watching most of your videos because it reminds me of my own travels. The Mayan people are so kind and loving. I miss the fresh fruits and vegetables; we just don’t get those same flavors in our produce in USA unless you grow it yourself but even then it’s still not 100% of what is eaten abroad. The chicharrón de puerco y de pollo…😋 I can smell it from here. Hehe so good! Sopa is eaten with every meal, too. My favorite is also sopa de gallina con fideo y verduras. God bless you and your family and those that accompany you in your travels.

Noticed that he is very polite even when he doesn't like something. He doesn't bad mouth the people or the dish, and he doesn't give much attention to it; he simply says "it's not my favorite" and move on to his favorites haha People often criticize him for liking everything he eats just because he isn't abrasive or intense about it.

Look at the size of those Roma Tomatoes !! They are HUGE !!! All those Vegetables in the Produce section of the Market all looked amazing and so Big & Fresh! I wish Grocery Stores in the U.S. all had Produce that looked that great !!

Wow this is great to see the Mayan culture and food! The friend chicken looks delicious. I recall how french fries with the meal is popular. Yes Mark gotta have a good soup when you are living in high elevation. I recall when living in Colombia in the Andes I ate lots of Sancocho.
