🇮🇩 Indonesian Street Food in Surabaya: • Back in Indonesia!! 🇮🇩...
SURABAYA, INDONESIA - Surabaya is known for its spicy food today we’re going on an ultimate Indonesian spicy street food tour in Surabaya. Get ready to eat non-stop sambal!
Huge thank you to Budi Tarjo: / indonesiadiscoverer (He offers incredible tours in Indonesia), for taking me around Surabaya!
Here’s all the food we ate:
Nasi Beti Bu Karmini (maps.app.goo.gl/n5uMcrboJcucX...) - Bu Karmini is known for her incredible food especially nasi tongkol, or rice with spicy mackerel and her spicy chili carbs which were some of the best chili crab I’ve ever had!
Bebek Tumapel Mbak Roh (maps.app.goo.gl/pTHbekjanumQv... ) - Sambal is one of the greatest parts of any Indonesian food meal and you’ll eat it with just about everything. This place is famous for their bebek goreng, or friend duck, but especially for their spicy and sweet sambal.
Depot Gito (maps.app.goo.gl/GHac6N8q9ZnSA...) - If you love spicy food, this is another absolute must eat Indonesian street food experience. You choose all the food you want, everything is deep fried and it’s served with an insanely spicy and tasty sambal chili sauce. One of their highlight dishes is Ayam Penyet - Fried chicken smashed with sambal.
Sego Sambel Mak Yeye (maps.app.goo.gl/BUCSsz1dR84JX...) - This street food stall is famous for a reason, it’s one of the best restaurants in Surabaya. They served rice topped with omelets and salted stingray and a small mountain of chili tomato sambal sauce. The combination is out of this world - one of the best meals in Surabaya!
Indonesia is a spicy food heaven and if you want to eat spicy when you’re in Surabaya, they won’t joke around!

As an Indonesian watching this, my stomach hurts from seeing how much sambal you're eating in a day. But I'm glad you enjoyed the Indonesian foods! And I can feel you Mark, sambal Indonesia is what I missed the most when I traveled to another country.
Thank you so much for watching, the sambal across Indonesia is so good, and so addictive!
@@MarkWiensthat is so Gross.I would never eat oily food.and I would never eat duck it's all dark meat n it's not good for you NASTY

the way he eats is outstanding too. 😂
Thank you very much Vicky, appreciate your support!

I really respect Budi for bringing you on this incredible journey. The restaurants are well curated and really represent Surabaya. These restaurants are local favorites, not an overrated and over hyped restaurants.
Budi knows his thing for sure
Yess shout out to Budi.. he's the man!
let budi cook
Thankyou brother 😃
From Malaysia, I love Indonesian food! Full of flavours, right amount of spicyness and sweetness and saltiness.
From Indonesia, I love Malaysian food! Lot's of A++ choices in one place, and the diversity mixes of flavors, mmph.... Top notch~

we will send more maids to your country
Ofc you do😂
We have a lot of Indonesian restaurants in the Netherlands because of our colonial history, but almost all of them adjusted their recepies to the Dutch pallet, so not really spicy. It is my dream to taste the real Indonesian spicy food in Indonesia itself!
Great to hear that, great to hear you have lots of Indonesian restaurants in the Netherlands, and hope you can visit Indonesia sometime as well!
you should come here and try the authentic taste! although it can a bit (or much) spicy that your pallette buat it's woth it
Yeah, come here and enjoy the original taste 😁
Green chilies r the best :D
Thanks Mark for sharing the street food from Surabaya. I came from Surabaya and been living more than 20 years in USA but still love to eat sambal with indo food more than burger and steak.
Food vlogger paling sopan yg menghargai masakan orang ,,,,thank mas Mark wiens Indonesian food go internasional
iya ini baru food expert sejati ga kaya codblue sama kokryuma
ada lagi yang sopan banget soal makanan indonesia namannya Max Ginestra. Nama channel nya "Abroad and Hungry"
As an indonesian myself, i can EASILY say you can take indonesian spicy food better than half of the population! the amount of sambal that you consumed in this one video alone, and how much you actually enjoyed them shows it! i appreciate you!! ❤
Mark, I'm back in the US and wish I'd bumped into you during my November visit to my hometown, Surabaya! Your picks were spot-on, and I'm kicking myself for not trying those fantastic places you featured. Keep those incredible food journeys coming - my sister and I are big fans of yours.
Thank you Mark, I almost crying. Surabaya is my lovely city, I've lived there for 6 years, but that enough to make me felt love for this city. Their food is just incredibly heart warming. You've done a great job for making a food series in Surabaya, the city you'll always love to visit anytime you go to Indonesia. Thank you again, Mark ❤
Thank you very much, really appreciate your support and encouragement!
Mark finally has met his worthy opponent: Indonesian sambal :D thanks for trying the sambal :)
I lived there for 7 years and I never been to the breakfast place ! I feel so heart broken . Here in Germany people made reservation 2 weeks before, go with a fancy clothes to have crabs for dinner in a fancy resto. But he was eating it casually for breakfast on the street stal . I’m so full of jealousy right now . But have fun !!! Surabaya is food heaven.
You're one hell of a man Mark, even as an Indonesian i don't think my own stomach can handle that amount of sambal in a single day 😂
I would love to have just one meal with Mark. A simple side of a road food stand, Mark, his family would be heaven for me.❤❤❤
Thank you very much, hope to have a meal with you as well!
As a Malaysian I would say Indonesia have the best ayam penyet no doubt, dont worry Indonesian we wont claim ayam penyet spicy stuff like this Malaysia can't beat you guys 👌
I mean... obviously lol
Santuy ae..

i remember discovering Indonesia in the 90s , feasting like this 24/7 and you could readily afford to buy food for kids hanging around who may not get a lot of protein in their diet. This food looks CRAZY GOOD!
I can feel the spiciness just watching your video, amazing you did not miss any sambal in your breakfast, lunch and dinner time in Surabaya. Enjoy Indonesia, Mark! Surabaya is definitely one of the best culinary heaven for foodies!
Everytime Mark goes to Indonesia there's always food that he likes the most in the entire world.
so true LMAO, guess the country is really up his alley
Yes he knows how to appease all his sellers he videos and has eaten at all around the world. 😉🤭 A true marketing flogger
He likes spicey meaty food, that's very flavorful and fragrant.
Yes it's true, I love Indonesia!
Mark is a type of guy who would say "you are so beautiful" to any girl he met
I’m so impressed that Mark can actually go to sleep with a stomach full of sambal. At one point in the video I noticed that his eyes weren’t even watering. Amazing. I can’t wait to see what he eats in the next video.
Surabaya is my second hometown.. i spent my junior high, high school, college and a few working years there before finally going back to my original hometown.. so I love you coming there and introduce her to the world.. IMHO some of the best food in the world is from surabaya.. I hope you get to try the famous Rawon now dubbed as the no.1 delicious soup in the world

You make it looks so easy, light and not spicy at all. It's amazing how you handle indonesian sambal. I hope you don't regret it the next morning 😂
Never disappoints eating street foods when you’re in Indonesia.
I know for sure I would have diarrhea after eating all that spicy foods although I’m Indonesian myself. 😅😅😅
Indonesia has more spices than other countries. That's what makes Indonesian's food much tastier but not very well known in the world. I love when you eat with hand like Indonesian. We eat using hand but with attitude. Only the tips of the fingers are used to eating, not the entire surface of the hand and you did the same. Awesome.
Keep healty Mark
Ahhh yg beeng 😂😅
As Surabayan I'm so honored that you came to visit, try & promote our local street food delicacy

Mark ate all that fiery sambals. Just imagining that make my stomach hurt 😂
I really appreciate Budi’s work to make sure Mark get the best of Surabaya taste. And his timing as well. I know all that stalls are always extremely busy, but they came as early as the stalls open to avoid the pack
i am indonesian and i am so proud that you like our foods
thank you for coming to our country
Welcome to our city Surabaya, Mark! Glad to see you enjoying all the foods! and you can say that we practically eat and bleed sambal here in Surabaya!😅
Thank you very much, awesome!
8:47 “cumi hitam” (cumi = squid; hitam = black) is what you call the black squid dish in Indonesian, in Madurese they call it “ennos celleng” (ennos = squid; celleng = black), but maybe your guide misunderstood you. Indonesia has more than 700 languages and dialects so it can be overwhelming.
17:03 You’re right, Mark. The black sambal has tamarind in it. 👍
19:43 Yes, ayam penyet is also popular in our neighboring countries like Malaysia, Brunei, and Singapore, so much so that now they just claim it as their own local Malay dish 😒 As an Indonesian of course I enjoy ayam penyet as well, although I do find it a bit too one dimensional with everything fried and oily.
Been to Malay and Singapore. The sambal on their penyet is sweet at it's peak spiciness. Can't beat Surabaya and Pacitan lol
Lol
Thank you for all your helpful insights, appreciate your support!
You can speak maduranese tho
@@MarkWiens anytime, Mark! I hope you were able to go to other provinces outside of Java this time around. Maybe Borneo or Papua 👍 Cheers! 🍻
In indonesia mark always looks so mindblown by indonesian food.. yeah im proud as indonesian. I know our food is really good.. 😆. We indonesian when we go to foreign country, we say why many of this food has no flavour, because our food is flavour bomb.. lol
The way you explain the taste, cooking process, and the overall scenery is so articulate. Really love your videos, kudos!
Haven't been home to Indonesia for almost 5 years, the temp is below freezing here, I'm still on fasting hour, and watching you devour these spicy dishes. Why am i torturing myself???
hey Mark, welcome back to Indonesia! I really appreciate your videos and I hope you enjoy your stay here (idk if this video is uploaded days after you left, but just in case you're still here.)
Thank you very much!
Mark Wiens is the G.O.A.T. of food-tasting facial expressions.🤣🤣🤣
What most interesting thing for me is :
1. Eating
2. Sambal
3. Knows Mark in Indonesia
4. Watching Mark eating Indonesian food
5. When Mark said "THE BEST FOOD EVER"
And this video is a full packaged of these entire thing
BRILLIANT
Can't wait to see Mark in Jakarta or Bekasi. The one and only food vloggers that I truly love ❤
when he said that?
what I loved from Mark's expression face when first spoon come to his mouth :
1. closed eyed and speechless for a moment than describe the taste
2. without any words just turning red face when get spicy food
3. smiling at the end
what a humble food vlogger
You deserve the Nobel Prize for World Peace... because your vlog reflects the atmosphere of peace, happiness and beauty of the world
29:48 when Mark thought it would be inferno but in fact it was only the purgatory.
From the texture it doesn't look that spicy but for us mortals this sambal would be heaven.
Hats off to you, Mark. Even as someone who lives in Surabaya, I can't handle spicy foods as good as you.
Fun fact: since chili is loved by most people in East Java, where Surabaya is located, it becomes one of the key factors in calculating inflation rate in the province. Its price fluctuation affects significantly to the overall food cost there.
I love how you appreciate all the food that you eat. Never I heard any negative review even if it might not suit your taste. I can see the passion and respect you put into each videos, for the person preparing the dish.
Gotta love Indonesia! Sambal everything! 👍👍
I'm happy with you Mark and I love how you enjoy and describe that dish, the signature dish of Surabaya and almost all around East Java. Hope you enjoy everything about my lovely country, you are the best food vlogger ever.👍👍👍❤
Nih orang gak pernah gagal bikin orang ngiler kalo lagi makan 😂😂
Man I’ve worked with my Indonesian brothers for 6 years and I can always vouch on nice spicy as hell delicious food ! My all time favourite would be sambal mata , sambal terası and Ayam batutu !!

@@user-mu1wo6kg1rnah bro, Thai food is sour
Indonesian food is really the best. I absolutely love it all. No wonder, my dear mom loved her time in Surubaya, and never forgot that city. She was amazing because she ate very hot sambal with rice and one really hot chili padi with each bite. She and her brother, my uncle were just chili crazy. I can take it quite hot, but I could never have a very hot sambal and chilly padi, in the same bite! I simply love Mark’s dedication, and appreciation for chilies, and sambal and peppers!can’t stop watching this Surubaya series! 😋 😋 😋
Spicy is my middle name. I love anything spicy food more. I’m African, Ethiopian probably explains why. ❤ Keep up the great work, Mark.
Can you imagine, wake up in the morning with empty tummy and you start with fire spicy foods.
Welcome to Indonesia
My brother accidentally splashed that spicy chili juice from the crab straight into his eyes, and was totally freaked out. I remember he was screaming and crying, trying to wash down his eyes in the bathroom. I think that crab juice splashing equivalent to getting the pepper spray, and left him traumatized with the crab from bu karmini😂
so is he got PTSD ?
I'm so happy to see this video, Mark. I missed my home town so bad as I had to move to another country now. THANKS SO MUCH AGAIN AND KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK 👍 👌 😀
gosh you're not only good at describing the food, eating a whole bunch of spices, pronouncing the language, but also explaining bits of the cultural side. stinky bean + non-oil based sambal is the best 👍👍👍👍 Budi is absolutely good guide
The craziest thing happened to me about year ago... I've always hated spicy foods my whole life and a year ago I had a cold and craved nothing but spicy food, couldn't get enough of it. Now I'm obsessed with spicy foods and love them. My pantry is filled with hot sauces, chili oils, and gochujang. Now I gotta get some sambal and Mark's ghost pepper seasoning to add to my collection.🌶
Your barehand technique for eating is quite good. Once you mastering it, you are basically open to try many indonesian dishes than people who cant. Some indonesia dishes taste better when you use bare hand especially these dishes in this video. Dont forget to bring hand sanitizer if the seller dont provide washbasin
Bebek Surabaya is the best duck in the world in my opinion. This video bring my memories back in Surabaya, thank you mark, hope you enjoy Surabaya and cant wait your video in Manado, palembang, padang bukittinggi, Banjarmasin and other city in Indonesia.
kya prnh nyoba bebek goreng keliling dunia ajh 😂
I really respect u mark.. U promote our Indonesian foods with your high appreciation for them. Good to see u in our country, mark
I just love the way you eat. Mixing every little bit of the food on the plate and ate it in one bite. Very satisfying.
Omgoodness!! The sambal looks so amazing and the combination of veggies with protein is just a perfect harmony of flavors. The one that really had me is the chili crab omg it reminds me of my mother in laws crab curry I absolutely love very much. Thanks Mark for this authentic phenomenal upload of flavors. Blessings to you and your family wishing ya'll safe travels always. 🌶🦀
I love you Mark, been following your journey for years!! Your enthusiasm, everything about your journey is so awesome. The ONLY thing that annoys me about you is how you eat crab lmaooooo... but man you have been an inspiration to me to travel the world the way you do! Cheers!
nasi tongkol bu karmini it is absolutly LEGEND. thanks for coming mark

as a malaysian best thing ive experienced eating in indonesia the way they serve the ulam (mix of raw vegetables) with samble in almost every rice dishes. we have ulams in malaysia as well but in indonesia its quite unique always served with their in-house sambal. and their ulams are so fresh, i mean so so so fresh and eating them with sambal is definitely supertasty. damn i really miss eating them with rice dishes i really need to travel to indonesia soon
