- This is the story about the 2022 Mason Cup (NCAA Hockey) between the Minnesota State Mavericks and the Bemidji State Beavers, where the teams scored not one, but TWO overtime goals to win the trophy. This is easily the most BIZARRE ends to a game I've ever seen.

Imagine losing the finals twice in an hour
Lmao so true. Having your hopes built all the way back up just to get them shattered like a minute after the game restarted.
Winning once and then losing would be about 1000x worse.
FR
Imagine WINNING twice in the same time period.
@@Jivvi that's what I was thinking. I'm glad that's not what happened.
After the trophy presentation the Conference President was contacted by the tv engineers in the truck who had the overhead footage that the in stadium replay officials did not have access to. It was the Conference President's decision to overturn the ruling and restart the game, something he took all responsibility for in the resulting press conferences.
I commend him on being willing to take on such a potentially controversial position, and the public backlash that comes with it, to make sure that the game ended the way it was supposed to.
A set of brass ones.
Now overturn the Tigers Perfect Game as it was the last out.
I dont think the conference president of the ccha can do that but id like to see him try @@stevenking3466
I remember half paying attention to this game as I'm a fan of another team in that league, Bowling Green, who lost to Bemidji in the quarters. Minnesota State was going to the national tournament regardless of the outcome. Bemidji needed this win to get the autobid or else their season was over. I had gotten home shortly after the first OT goal. Then word spread like wildfire on twitter that the game was being restarted so I watched the restart. Unbelievably gutted for that Bemidji team. Can't imagine going through that twice.
Imagine thinking you won and then losing, that would suck too lol. at least there was no doubt left on who deserved the championship
Bowling Green in Ohio? Someone I know went there.
Well done on the video ..Whiling watching this, I could not help but think back to when I played in the NCAA tournament back in 2009 when we experienced similar circumstances in our game. My teammate shot the puck through the net but play resumed for ..maybe 4 or 5 minutes. Then it was reviewed and we ended up going to the frozen four. There was a lengthy review time as well. It was in double OT too. lol. Good times. UVM vs Air Force.
That's awesome! You have some first hand experience with this haha.
This is a tough one because no matter how you cut it, it’s unfair somehow. My opinion is that it’s unreasonable to restart the game after the trophy was given. Glad the same team won in the end and with a beautiful goal.
Couldn’t have said it better
At 1:55 he says “The Michigan State Mavericks” but it’s “Minnesota State Mavericks” (from Mankato). He fixed it later in the video.
I was so confused for a sec lol
Must have a time limit for reversing the call on the ice. After time limit then hand out trophies
Yeah it definitely brings up an interesting debate - how long is too long before it's not worth it to reverse the call? Like I wonder what would have happened if they somehow caught the no-goal in this game the next day instead of an hour later.
@@CunuckHockeyI'd say we give it about 3 50
Make sure that it is fully reviewed. Do not hand out the trophies until it is. We should be able to do that within a few minutes, with today's technology.
I’m of the opinion that the refs should only have access to the videos meant for the refs. Once those are reviewed, make the call and let it stand. If a new video comes out later on, tough luck. The refs have to deal with the resources on hand. Ask the league to step up their technology but don’t make the players come back on the ice after a trophy presentation.
Brain dead comment
1:54 Minnesota*
Yeah, I had to rewind that too, he said Michigan State.
Nice catch
There needs to be a line drawn somewhere. Is there? If they found the extra camera angles 2 hours later, do they still nullify the goal and restart? 4 hours later? The next day?
As soon as there's handshakes that should be the end no matter what happened
Awesome video brother, your editing and narration skills are on a super high level 💯 I'm definitely looking forward to the next videos 🔥
Really appreciate the support! Glad you enjoyed the video
i remember this!! God bless you and thanks for sharing this🏒✝️
There would absolutely never be beers flying around in any college hockey locker room. A coach would be fired immediately for allowing that.
For allowing it sure, but its foolish to think its not happening
So, I live in Mankato, the place where the Mavericks play is downtown and off university grounds. So alcohol is served at every game.
WOW this is crazy, thanks for this !
I’m glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching
Really well made and put together video. Earned my sub for sure
Thanks so much!
Other than the whole Michigan state Mavericks part.
Wow, great point about Michigan partying/drinking for an hour and having to play again. Huge advantage for Bemidji!
It was quite incredible how that goal wasn't reviewed immediately. It took an hour. Come on!!! Did the off-ice officials just assume it had to be a good goal?
It was reviewed, but they didn't have access to all the video angles immediately.
FACINATING, indeed. Thanks.
this is good content, well done
30 seconds in and the producrion is unreal.. you'll be over 5k subs in no time.
Really appreciate the encouraging words! Thanks so much!
Amazing they had to replay/no goal. Wow. The delay that is.
Great video
My mom is from Bemidji. I gxrew up in California but loved going back to see my grandparents…
The Calgary flames non-goal that you referred to at the end was not in overtime like you said. It was in the third period and would have maybe prevented OT as it would have brought the flames to 3-2 but not quite as definitive. Great video just saying as a flames fan that wasn't overtime lol
Good call! Thanks for catching that haha. And I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
I like these kinds of videos
Thanks! I really enjoyed making this one too
The defense on the second OT goal screening his goalie and doing nothing is horrible.
Haha I came to the comments to say that. Terrible pinch, other guy falls over and the last D screens his goalie big time. Really bad. If it wasn’t there last game their coach would of chewed them all out.
I mean the guy that screens the goalie is in perfect position to defend the pass to no 28 streaking across the ice. Had the pass gone to him he would have poke checked it away broken up the play. It was just unfortunate for him that the one guy had the vision to pass it back instead of trying to force it to 28 streaking towards the net like most players would.
Buddy with the celly after a tip is wild
interesting vid never heard about this before
Yeah I feel like anything that isn't the NHL usually doesn't get as much air time as other leagues (understandably so). But this was too interesting not to cover! Glad you found the video interesting!
@@CunuckHockey agree... keep up the good work
Bro the walk back was so cold.
Imagine winning the college hockey championship while being drunk
1:28 did anyone see that ref get bodies lmao
I can assure you...there's no alcohol in the locker rooms in the NCAA..
Good video but btw it’s Minnesota State not Michigan State
that is nuts
Great story
All of those players have a great story to tell for the rest of their lives haha
there should be a time limit for how long u can wait before you review a goal, thats just unfair imo. if everyone calls it a goal and u let the team celebrate and receive the trophy, there should not be a review allowed like thats just cruel
There is a rule: Officials' duties and powers continue during intermissions and until all players have left the ice and entered the dressing room at the conclusion of the game.
In this case the players had entered the dressing room and the officials had apparently left the building
What a sad story that I laughed at
My 2nd cousins kid was the goalie for the Minnesota State team, Dryden McKay.
I LOVED DRYDEN
Division 2 schools where hockey only matters.
I had something similar happen with my old high school team that I was still helping out with after graduating, he had scored in overtime off a faceoff but it was a high-stick that I noticed from the bench but they called it good and after we're done celebrating we saw the refs talking to each other and eventually waved it off and we lost early in the next overtime period
lmao. @ Michigan State Mavericks. . I think he meant "Minnesota State Mavericks"
It was a woopsie on my part haha
1:54 did you just call them Michigan State???
Those Beavers lost by a hair 😂
I was there most people left but since my brother did the video board we stayed but there was maybe 1 thousand people there after at the start it was around 5 thousand people there
You have Replay AT the game…within 5 to 10 minutes. You don’t do it an HOUR LATER!!! The game is OVER!!
I’m glad Minnesota St still won but for Beminji to lose TWICE in Overtime is Just cruel. Should have never restarted.
Michigan StateMavericks @ 1:55 😂
Hahah woops don't know how I missed that in the edit
1:54 Michigan state?
This was so bad. They shouldn’t have done the ceremony and let them celebrate if they were gonna behind the scenes find a way to Not let them win.
Can you imagine if this happened in the NHL? I know a guy named Steve "Dangle" Glynn would absolutely LOSE HIS F***ING MIND.
Kinda BS if they had lost. Imagine if they did for something like the World Series or Super Bowl. When a play is called, and the awards given out, and the teams are in their locker rooms settling down; I feel like that would be waaaay too late for an official to go “Uh uh, that was illegal.”. It’s not like cheating, different story. It was a bad call that was deemed acceptable. Happens a bunch in sports, but to do that on a stage like this? Damn. Crazy.
David Backus never played in the CCHA, Mankato was in WCHA before the return of the CCHA college hockey re-alignment is another long story.
🤓 ERM ACKSHUALLY
damn... I bet the 2004 calgary flames wish the league would of done this for them (disallowed goal when it was in actually LOL)
wrote this before you mentioned it in the video haha
Not mentioned: Minnesota State would have gone to the national tournament win or lose.
Mavericks, I think you were a little hard on the Beaver
Justice.
march 19 is my birthday 😂😂😂
Credit to the league for having the resolve to do what was right rather than what was convenient, unlike the NHL (cough Brett Hull cough).
I feel for you Sabres fan! That was like 25yrs ago! Hopefully you’re still young enough to someday see them raise the Cup!
@@Rushyyz3 I’m not actually a sabers fan and wasn’t then either. But I certainly feel for sabers fans because under the rules at the time that should have been disallowed. Stars may well have won anyway, as the correct call would have just extended OT, and even if Buffalo wins that game they’d have still had to have won game 7, but it wasn’t the right call under the admittedly dumb rule at the time.
@@jmcminn1076 I agree! I thought the skate in the crease rule was one of the worst rule changes back then! Every goal that was scored around the net was always questionable if it was going to count or not! As a Hockey fan, glad we don’t have to deal with that anymore!
I remember that game. I was rooting for the beavers but when they had to come back out after an hour and replay ot, I was rooting for the mavericks. What's done is done, especially when the first ot goal looked really good. If we're going start calling back games, it should have done when Hull scored against Buffalo
agreed! i wasnt bornn yet but that was bs. the cup shouldve went to buffalo.
That seems way less controversial than this would be if it were on a bigger stage. Brett Hull's skate in the crease was basically just a technicality that had no actual bearing on the play. It was a stupid rule from the get go that was would have wiped out an otherwise good goal. This on the other hand was clearly not a goal. Could you imagine if this is how buffalo lost that year instead?
Complete bush league. Once the players leave the “field”, the game is over. Bad calls are made all the time. This was beyond ridiculous.
Michigan State Mavericks. Oops.
at 1:54, you say "Michigan State" instead of "Minnesota State"
Odd way to become a 2 time champ but I'll allow it.
Michigan State Mavericks?
Puck don't lie
Well NCAA tournament not national championship
really had to do calgary fans dirty at the end 😅 We won the cup in 04! Kipper is a legend
Hahah I didn’t mean that as a dig at the flames tbh, I truly do wonder about whether that was a good goal or not
@CunuckHockey yeah im just joking around, and being from Calgary it was nice hearing us called out 🤣
Speaking of Kipper, his jersey is finally going to the rafters on March 2nd. It’s about time. They should’ve done it the same time they put Iggy’s up.
Hey buddy, nobody calls it div one just so you’re aware 😂😂😂
“The Michigan state mavericks” bro do you not proof view your videos???
Turns out 2 hours later they figured out the play was offsides 😆. How tf do you not review the goal immediately in a game that important especially when you have a camera angle -_-
As bad as that must've been for Bemidji to lose the game twice in one hour, it probably was the right thing because if they had scored the OT winner, their win might've contained an asterisk (which personally I despise and think it shouldn't be a thing) because of the controversial goal. Plus, I also feel bad for the initial player who scored the goal because for one hour, he was the hero and because of an unfortunate break with the net got his moment wiped out and allowed another teammate to score and be the hero.
It wasn't an unfortunate break with the net... he would not have scored if the net hadn't come up.
After the trophy presentation is over is just wrong man, they took the team photo already, that is just wrong 😂
Michigan State Mavericks???
this could have been a 1 minute video.
I dislike rewarding the player who dislodged the posts.
And restarting the game over an hour later because you found angles your referees had no access to during the review process? Thats a hard sell (I'm not buying)
WOW
GO MAVS!!!!!!
To bad y’all suck and will never be good again
You should make a downfall of Mankato hockey how they were so good a couple years ago now looks like they won’t even win the ccha and you should make a video about the Mankato student section haven’t seen much of it do they’re even have one?
Goes to show how useless video replay is, that’s a goal. At high speed it looks like a goal, it’s called a goal, it’s a goal.
There's an interesting wrinkle that you came close to, but didn't touch on. Minnesota State had already locked up an at large bid into the tournament regardless of what happened in this game. The game was really deciding if Bemidji made the tournament or the 14th ranked team, and my team, Northeastern. For over an hour I thought Northeastern had made the tournament until the CCHA president made up the rules and gave his conference another crack at adding another team to the tournament. Ultimately it didn't matter, but it wasn't a pleasant time thinking they were in the tournament back to uncertainty.
Just my opinion...if it's been an HOUR, and they handed out the trophies and took the Championship picture, then it's a done deal. Shouldn't have restarted the game. Take all the time you need afterwards to get the call right, but this just seems silly to do it at that point.
But all the time in the world wouldn't have done any good. The refs didn't have the overhead angle that the TV engineers in the truck had. That was the angle that 100% proved that the puck went under the side of the net rather than over the goal line.
Cunuck? WTF is that?
Nice of the goalie to just completely duck out of the way on the real OT winner. I don't think I've ever seen a goalie shrink that much when going into the butterfly.
I agree that they made the right call in resuming the game. You don't want an illegitimate championship, like the NHL had in 1999 because no one had the guts to say "that goal was no good, play will resume in...". Perhaps Dallas still would have won the Stanley Cup legitimately, but perhaps not. We will never know.
NHL draft lottery is rigged.
Ridiculous to restart it even if it was the right "call".
Either you don't watch college hockey, or you are just intentionally deceiving people by continuing to call it "the national championship" when they are only going to the NCAA Tournament. The National Championship is a single game between the 2 remaining teams after the 14 other teams who made the NCAA's were eliminated over the previous 3 rounds.
You're right, to be completely accurate I could have referred to it as the "national championship tournament" instead of just the "national championship". Appreciate the callout!
dude chill out. it doesn’t matter.
Gelinas put it in
Khabibulin kicked it back out
At 1:57 you call them the Michigan State Mavericks. Michigan State are the Spartans NOT the Mavericks and they are in the Big 10, not the CCHA. It is hard to take this channel seriously when you make mistakes like this and when you talk about D1 hockey and call it "div 1". It is either D1 or Division 1, not "div 1".
the first goal was good could not have gone under post there is a stud either in the ice or on the bottom of post that would have stopped the puck
Not necessarily, your entire argument rests on the fact that it couldn’t have gone behind the peg, which looking at the angle it‘s obviously it did
It definitely went under the side of the net. It wasn’t a goal
How many Israeli pule rule the CCHA?
It's crazy how you're pretending college hockey is a thing. You also fucked up around 2 minutes and made the video crazy confusing by saying the game was Minnesota Vs. Bemidji, and then called Minnesota Michigan.
I’m confused, is college hockey not a thing? 🤔 and yeah I did mess up once by referring to them as Michigan! That’s on me haha
It's just barely any sort of feeder league for the NHL. I think it's a wild stretch and a hilarious way to make Americans feel more included past the name of the AHL. @@CunuckHockey
I think there's a stat like 33% players in the NHL as of 2019 are NCAA alumni. That's not an insignificant number.
he made a mistake. it’s not that big of a deal. get over it.
Calls division 1 “div 1” and Minnesota State, Michigan State. Nope. I’m out. Another clueless CZcamsr.
Haha it was an honest mistake, but I’m sorry if the video wasn’t for you. Thanks for checking it out regardless!
