With the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs in full swing, I wanted to dive deeper into why we're seeing more and more comebacks and unpredictable moments in this years playoffs. With teams like the Colorado Avalanche, Vancouver Canucks, and the New York Rangers pulling off big come from behind wins, I dive deeper into the underlying reasons for these crazy comebacks.

Daniel Sprong has produced offense like one of the best players in the entire NHL over the past 2 seasons with the Seattle Kraken and the Detroit Red Wings. I hate the dump n chase
Yes, it is.
The D should just stuff themselves in the net.
So funny how hockey players have to have this tough guy persona when off the ice, they're just a bunch of playboy millionaires 😅. The o brien podcast with Souray was the funniest, how they secretly don't not want to fight or block pucks because they don't want to party in the weekend with a swollen face. 😂
In the case of Washington vs TB, the carrier could have dumped to the defenseman if that dman moved towards the center and he'd have a full on blast towards the offensive zone. Have a defenseman rush up from his slot late, yeah it's risky but you gotta do something
This is the hockey i fell in love with when playing as a kid on our town pond. The degenerate crap we see today is garbage hockey. Instigating, charging, and checking after the whistle, horn, or goal should never be allowed. The suckerpunches during ridiculous scrums prove that hockey is no longer a "Gentleman's Game." Even in our townie pond games that sometimes got a little out of hand, we always had a handshake after every game and when one of our guys was getting too aggressive, our own team would take them off the ice sit them for a cooldown. If somebody refused the handshake, they wouldn't play for a week. We did drop gloves occasionally, but nobody ever threw a punch on someone that had their gloves on. It just didn't happen. This clip is exactly what a hockey fight is; a tool of the game and NOT some a malicious act of aggression. Today's hockey that penalizes legal open ice hits, but promotes degeneracy and scrums is NOT OLD SCHOOL HOCKEY. IT'S GARBAGE!
He’s such a underrated weapon on the team
it took 22 years for gretzky to get his 894 goals ovechkin is at 19 years with 853 goals he needs 41 goals to tie him connor mcdavid ect and all the super stars young guns thats are playing now in nhl will never be in the nhl for these many years or even get the awards that ovechkin has 2 years left on ov contract he can do another 2 40 gaals seasons you never know amazing player
wait until they play Finland in the upcoming 4 team tournament.
Big Z sure helped them win the series, who's crying now
And we can’t even keep this line together
Two teams were fighting and trying to get their teams going. Then they suddenly become friends at the end.
A player is only as good as the team and coaching around them goose is good on the panthers because the players around him play to his strengths as well as he plays to there’s
I'm a panthers fan, and Forsling has been my favorite player on the team for the past 3 years, the dudes a complete beast.
The problem @ 3:46 is that the speed was quickly isolated into a 2on5, notice the defense behind Miller on the SAME side of the ice. The plan would call for Miller to come up on the strong side as pictured and when the hole is closed, drop pass or dish off to one defenseman joining the play on the weak side.
Done bud? Yeah atta boy good job 😅😅😅
so how is this any different with teams that use the neutral zone trap used by new jersey, and minnesota i think?
Go OILERS 😊
Keep up with this style LA, the Oilers appreciate kicking your ass first round again 😂
How does this compare to the neutral zone trap employed by the 90's Devils?
And he wasn't even named a Norris Trophy Finalist. SMH. And he's also been Smyth frontrunner these Playoffs too
Europeans: First time? Trap play has existed for long time. its the most effective way to defend but it kills the entertainment value sadly since its dump and skate. If every team wanted to defend to the best of their abilities they would use trap 100%
Of course, he is 39, obviously he is not as good as he was in 2010s.
PANTHERS fan here been saying he's the best d player in the league
canucks 2 - 3 oilers
This is ageing well
That’s a fake fight
Panthers season ticket holder here. It has been a privilege watching this defensive superstar every game. Also, Chucky has said that players need to keep their wives and girlfriends away from Gus when he takes off his shirt.
Or, he could pass to the other side of the ice. This is just dumb.
if played correctly the trap actually lures players to pass to other side allowing the defensive team to cut the pass and counter attack. So no you should not pass to the other side unless there is a mistake by the defensive team in man marking. This is common trap from Europe and most teams use it since its the most effective way to defend.
Sounds like everyone should be using 1-3-1. You didn't have any examples of a mirror match. It's obviously a more flexible and defensible formation. Adapt or die.
It is used almost everywhere in europe since its easily the most effective way to defend, its called trap play and there is different variations of it. NA just wants to keep the entertainment value high and thats why its pretty much a unwritten rule for teams to not use it.
@@Miksuuzz it's funny, ever since I learned about it I've seen seeing it happen all the time. Teams seem to do it almost by accident.
This is why you need to use the Flying V 😂
The 1-3-1 almost got a dogshit Sens team to the final. Shit is pathetic.
I say get rid of offsides. Seems to me that if you can have guys skating behind their stupid zone then they can't easily force you to dump the puck into the zone and give up possession. I didn't grow up watching or playing hockey but got into it when the Hawks were good, so maybe there is some really amazing reasoning for offsides to exist. But whatever it is, I am not aware of it. Every explanation just sounds like BS to me.
This is not that hard to defeat. This is why you have a forward/defenseman coming from the rear on the opposite side of the ice, easy entry since four of five players are on one side of the ice. Problem solved.
Why don’t they pass back after forcing the middle guys to commit to one side. Have like a football style center defender that can pass in a V to the flanks and force the back defenders to constantly over commit.
because then you have players standing in the blue line due to offside, if you pass back your teammates are still marked and you have to either regroup or dump it but you would lose the puck since the attacking team players would be standing and would have to wait for the puck to cross blue line resulting in opponents defenders to be first on the puck. The wingers are both marked and you cannot pass there, actually the purpose of trap play is to lure the player to pass to the other side resulting in a counter attack. The only viable option against a trap is to find mistakes or if there isnt any (most cases) dump the puck and battle for it in the boards. This is why trap play is the most effective way of defending and used a lot in europe. It sadly kills the entertainment but its natural evolution of tactical play.
As corny as this is?? Its a strategy.. figure out how to beat it... thats what belicheick did to the K gun and the bills.. 🤷♂️
They’re clearly friends off the ice and train together in the off season. Bear in mind a convo like this probably isn’t happening in this playoffs.
Sport is a game of war. They zig, you zag.
It's fundamental defense. It's like watching the San Antonio Spurs play in the 2000's and 2010's
In my opinion. If it's legal to play 1-3-1 none of us should whine about it. The game has to evolve with it. Same thing that happened in Football and Tiki Taka tactics in early 2010's. "Boring to watch"... The game is about winning not playing flair game. Brazil may have plenty of flair players but Germany still beat them 7-1 by playing like an engine (2014).
Z s a goof big mouth big head. I'll meet him in a back alley no problem
Woahhh tough guy alert 🚨
These players/punditz sound like thee most boomer complaints I've ever heard. This is professional sports, Adapt or get left behind!
I left the chat...
They weren't booing, they were chanting Ky-ROOOOOOO.
You break it down by, you know, puck handling.
I am not a fan of the modern game. Is everyone more offensively skilled? Or have the rules made it far more comfortable for offense? The defenders can't do what they used to 20 years ago without being called for interference, slashing, holding, hooking, etc. I enjoy great defense and chippy play. That's why I'm cheering for the Panthers this year.
It’s called the neutral zone trap. Figure out a way to counter it.
Only two series have been won by the lower seed and that's the oilers beating the cannucks and the avs beating the jets and thats a 3 beating a 2 and a 2 beating a 1... doesn't seem so unpredictable to me, stop looking at analytics.
We are exactly where i thought we'd be. NYR, canes, canucks, and oilers all had an incredibly easy first round imo. You could have looked at those series objectively and on paper and easily picked the winners of those series. This is the first year in a while the top teams are in the final 4. Was sure the stars could beat vegas and assumed colrado would go to at least 7 colorado, which btw how tf did they finish so high in the standing and get arguably the two hardest teams, at the very least hardest in their own division, in the first two rounds? How does that work? How did every other top team get cake for the first round? I think comeback win percentages arent the greatest statistics to go by. Comebacks are awesome when you have that ability in your back pocket, but playing from behind consistently is a recipe for failure almost all of the time. Coming back is great if you can use the momentum to make a statement on the next game and ultimately the series. DOing it constantlyjust means you are playing desperate hocky and while that can create good things, the more calm and reserved oppenent can smell that fear a mile away. Look at vegas last year, and tampa during their two runs for good examples of that. Also you cant mention puck luck without mentioning skill. If you arent skilled to get into position there is no amount of puck luck in the world that create success.
