  • The Edmonton Oilers have gone from last place in the NHL to a playoff spot in the span of one month. In this video, I break down how they did this thanks to their improved goaltending, improved structures thanks to Kris Knoblauch, the McDavid Ryan Nugent Hopkins and Zach Hyman line, and getting some puck luck back on their side.

The Oilers just beat the Blue Jackets 4-1 to extend their winning streak to 14. Just 3 away from tying the record set by the Pens.
Edit: Make it 15 in a row with the 3-0 win against the Blackhawks. Incredible stuff!

The issue with the Oilers under Woodcroft was that Woodcroft switched to a zone defense but never actually ran one before and struggled to implement it. Knoblauch played and coached a zone defense long before he was the Oilers coach and was brought in to run that style. Coffey also has been influential; under Dave Manson the Oilers defenders were coached to simply get the puck up the wall and get it out, and they were to never move the puck through the middle or try and make nice plays. Coffey lets the defense move the puck however they need to and encourages the defenders to make plays or go up the middle.

To put it mildly - Skinner has been utterly fantastic, and breaking the record of the great Grant Fuhr says a lot!! He kept them in the game today, when they had no right to be in the game - I think it was 14 GIVEAWAYS in the first two periods!! And heaps of shots at him and the Jackets swarming all over him like a bunch of wasps!! But the thing I like best about the Oilers is that they're playing as a TEAM - and as everyone knows a TEAM will beat a bunch of superstars playing together almost all of the time - just look at the 1993 Canadiens playing the Kings in the SCF in 1993. NOBODY will want to play the Oilers from here to the end of the season - and definitely not in the playoffs!! I've been an Edmonton fan of all sports since my family first moved there in 1960 - the old Flyers, the Eskimos, the Oil Kings (used to go to the old Gardens when Sather and Pat Quinn played) and since 1979-80, the Oilers. I've lived in Christchurch, New Zealand for the past 50 years, and it was hard to get information and results for years, so thank the Devil for the Internet!!

Oilers were not plagued by poor goaltending. They were plagued by poor overall play, especially in the defensive end, of which poor goaltending numbers were largely a symptom. You can preach about advanced stats until the cows come home, but the fact is, Oilers were giving away ridiculous scoring opportunities left and right, which led to goals, which made the team that was already struggling with confidence issues to panic and commit further mistakes.
Goaltending could have been better. But the numbers would have always been better, had their play in the defensive end been better. You have to give your goaltenders a chance to win, rather than to expect them to be the ones to make twenty impossible saves in every game, then blame them if they can't.

Without a good defense the goalie is going to look bad. But when they caught onto it, they are much better at defending and it has improved skinner’s save percentage.

That chart of the top 15 win streaks REALLY surprised me! MTL only on there once in all those years of mega dynasties at #12. I'm also a little surprised Edmonton wasn't on there before this year with the SUPER team they had for a decade!
Then you have teams like Boston & New Jersey on there twice in 2 dif eras. And Pittsburgh on there THREE TIMES in 93, 2010, and 2013!
Not to mention young franchises like Colorado, Florida and COLUMBUS at #2 with 16 straight WINS! Mind boggling.
Looks like EDM is gonna challenge for that number one spot.

It’s a bit fair to those Montreal dynasties of old because a tie would result in the streak being broken. It’s gotten much easier to have longer win streaks since the removal of ties!
There’s a stat out there for the longest unbeaten streak which I believe is held by the Flyers at 35 games or so if I’m not mistaken.

Almost all pundits keep comparing Woodcraft-Knoblach, when the real difference is Manson-Coffey.
PK is a good point, but overall team and individual defense has been the big difference and considering Dave's wife passed away 4 months before the coaching change, I'm not that surprised. A man can try his hardest, but you can't escape that energy, that deep loss; it gets passed in to co-workers, it leeches cohesion. Not to mention the shift in defensive objectives, such as clearing the defensive zone by moving puck up-ice and generating a play instead of dumping it out or firing it off the glass.

I think the pour goaltending oilers have experienced was largely a symptom of their pour defensive play. If you give opportunities to shoot on goal there isn’t a team in the nhl that isn’t going to exploit that. The defense has regained so much structure. They are getting the changes done which is keeping legs fresh for forwards to get on the back check and not give up defensively. The commitment to playing defense appears to have created some great confidence between the goal tenders and d-men.

Dont underestimate the D zone changes instituted by Knoblauch from a hybrid 3-2 to a zone, and the empowerment of the D to make plays up the middle of the ice. a Zone D with better in zone puck support, and an empowered D group allow the Oilers to be significantly better at exiting the zone. This is a massive reason for their better defending and much better results all over the ice

You have a 50/50 chance of being right. 46 games last season in the West tied up the final wildcard spot. I for one counted them out early on completely. Glad to see them rebound. However, they do have a challenging last half schedule with a lot of back to back games. They will still need to play 500 hockey the last half and have afew other teams hit some bumps. With the addition of Corey Perry i think they will be in the final 8 and if not be a Cup contender. Good luck Oilers.

Two very winnable home games before the All-Star break (Chicago, Nashville) then a tough game on the road (Vegas.) I'm going to say 16, but they fall short. If they win that one, they could win against Anaheim to get to 18, but the back to back with Los Angeles the next night on the road is also very easy to lose. Probable 16, best 18.

Honestly, Edmonton has the same issues they had last year. Good scoring even though their PP is not nearly as good as last year, is overall defense and goaltending. We saw what this lead to last year. They have a chance to catch Vegas but I don't think either one will catch Vancouver. But Vancouver is starting to have some injuries, and Vegas has been getting healthier, and Edmonton hasn't had any serious stretches with injuries. All that really matters is getting into the playoffs.

Also what I find encouraging is they seem to be winning games 5 on 5 v on power play like last year and lately seem to be getting more bottom six scoring to help McDavid, Hyman, Draisatl and Nugent-Hopkins. I want to see McDavid go all the way. He’s a generational guy and I hope Edmonton doesn’t waste his career. But also agree I am not sold on their goaltending just yet. Amazing run, keep it up.
