In another video on CZcams, a retired Ateve Nash knocks down his first 34 free throws as a demo of his technique. NBA players when away from the pressure of a game shoot far higher than their percentage during games.
Same for kickers in the nfl. Without anything on the line it’s pretty much automatic. Crazy how good players can be without really trying. I’ve been fortunate enough to play with/against Chris Paul twice at the ymca. He didn’t miss.
After 16 hours they probably have just as much pressure and fatigue.
That’s pretty obvious… they shoot free throws during the course of a 48 minute pro-level high intensity game with tens of thousands of people watching them. When a regular hooper is in just a gym shooting nothing but free throws with fresh legs, hitting 41 in a row isn’t as difficult as Jxmy made it seem here with “analytics”. Cuz I watched the video of these guys doing this, and they all suck and do not hoop whatsoever.

Me and my homies do this after every hoop sesh, we make a three, an off hand lay, and a free throw all back to back everytime before we leave. So that's 9 consecutive shots at the end of every hoop sesh, and trust me, free throws become the hardest shot when you're freedom depends on it😂
In college, had to make a free throw to leave practice. It was harder than it sounds. After all that running and shooting and just wanting to hit the sack, everything was on the line LOL

Free throws aren’t something a player should easily make consecutively since you have to account in game pressure, stadium noise, fatigue, rhythm etc. If you put NBA players in a gym they could do it but in a game is a whole different stratosphere. Everyone’s human at the end of the day
Yea this was my first thought. I love Jxmy but with all due respect this video just seemed like filler. There's absolutely no way an open gym is comparable to an NBA game, its like watching Ben Simmons sink threes in practice. They don't shoot 41 consecutive free throws and rotate guys out as it happens. Its quite literally apples and oranges. Not sure what's been going on but there's been several of his videos over the past 6mo/year that just feel like reaching for content.

I’ve mentioned this before in the comments on your channel but I’m 2002-2003 season in San Antonio prior to the Lakers/Spurs game I saw Kobe hit hundreds of free throws without missing. He shot about 1k and missed maybe 5 or 6. That was after he got to the gym at 5am, worked out, did his own shoot around, ate, worked out again and did a second shoot around.

So like quick video idea. Since the regular season is coming to an end in a month or so... What is the maximum amount of wins possible a team can get and miss a guaranteed spot at the playoffs (finish 7th) and whats the minimum possible amount of wins a team needs to barely make it there (finish 6th)
The max to be 7th seed is probably somewhere around 54-56 wins and it would likely be the Kings. The minimum to make the 6th seed would probably be around 34-36 by the Pacers, the Heat, or the Magic. For this season.
I got u bro. Say the Celtics start losing for some reason and drop to the 6th seed. Seeing as they are the team with the best record they have the most wins of any team which means to drop to the 6th seed they would need the least amount of wins. This is of course assuming every other team is actively trying to win games. Figuring out how many games would depends on the expected record of every team by the end of the season. It’s not that hard to do. Since seeding is based on fg %, all u need to do is take the 6th team in the east and figure out how many more games they are likely to win (fg% times games left), add that to their current wins and that gives u how many games the 6th seed will win. They have 25 games left so multiplying that by their win rate u get 14 more wins. Adding this to their current wins u get 46 wins. Celtics rn have 44 wins. So realistically they only need 1 more win to get the 6th seed (they need to have less wins than the pacers would so the pacers jump up to 5th seed). This is assuming fg% stays the same. Hard to factor in things like injuries and changing roster dynamics. I can’t be bothered to calculate the other one.

I’m not sure what you mean. If someone’s skill leads them to shoot 70% from the line, then the theoretical chance of them making a free throw is 70%. The skill level is the chance

The elephant in the room is that you're comparing in-game attempts to a collaborative effort in a gym. Add in fatigue, crowd noise, sledging and the pressure of performing on the international stage and these random guys 100% never achieve this.
The 'Mulligan' takes away from it somewhat.

Doesn’t even have to be nba players, just any decent hooper can probably do this in much less than 16 hours. Those guys were the most unathletic non hoopers I’ve seen attempt something like this. Which is pretty ironic for their name…

saying that average "decent hooper" could shoot 90% FT avg with no game fatigue or crowd pressure, the odds of 41 consecutive makes would be 0.9^41=0.013 or about 1%.
now lets say that the average time to rebound, pass to the next guy, let him do his routine and shoot, is about 20 seconds. 20*41=820 seconds .
so, every 820 seconds, they have about a 1% chance of winning, therefore a 99% chance of losing.
following this, we can see that the odds of continually losing are (0.99)*(0.99)*(0.99)*... etc.
Now we can define that the amount of attempts "x" needed to reach 50/50 odds of winning / losing by: 0.5=0.99^x, where x=69 attempts.
Therefore, the average time it would take 41 "decent hoopers" to make 41 consecutive free throws would be about 69*820=56,580 seconds or 943 minutes, or about 15 hours and 43 minutes, pretty much the same time that the barstool employees took

A mulligan is basically a redo. Retry. Redraw. So during the challenge someone missed, and instead of restarting from the beginning, they all agreed not to count that miss. They continued with the challenge even though technically they had failed it. They only did it once, but it changed the context I feel. In the NBA, there is no mulligan. So I wonder how many games had 41 free throws made with one miss in-between.

There's a gigantic difference between practice conditions and in-game conditions. NBA games are a lot more tiring and intense than practice, so players are obviously gonna shoot worse in games. And if you're getting free throws in a real game, there's a chance that you took a hard hit on the previous play, which is gonna mess you up even more.
For some perspective, threes are a lot harder than free throws, and Stephen Curry made 105 three pointers in a row in practice. But his longest in-game streak of free throws made without a miss is 80.

I once was part of a similar crazy event like this, it happened during the first training for the basketball team of the company I was working for, so there was a mix of amateur players and random people that wanted to exercise, one of the drills was each one will shoot a free-throw and if you miss everybody else has to run around the court 1 time, NOBODY missed, we were at least 20 people!!! at the end the couch was kind of pissed because he was expecting us to run a lot so he went to the free-throw line and just flip the ball with one hand to miss it on purpose and HE ALSO MADE IT!!! we were screaming and jumping around like monkey too.😂😂

We did this kind of challenges also on the base line on the corners making as many 3-pointers in a row as possible. Barely touching the board from behind.
I think we also have to factor in the amount of energy it takes to make a free throw after running up and down a basketball court. What would have made this comparable was if the record breakers were playing a tournament of a 5 v 5 scrimmage against each other, and counting the free throws in game. That would have taken ages, but it’s also not to take away what they did.

I remember watching that hawks game in 2021 when I first got into basketball and I was going crazy because I realized that neither team had missed a free throw but nobody even seemed to notice or care
With the factor of human error always being taken into account it almost makes those type of world records more luck than skill once you get to a certain point.

This was a great reminder of my late dad, he used to go on the concrete and shoot at the hoop (with one of those things that would send it back if you made it) a LOT. He had a couple great streaks that I am not going to mention because I don't want anyone attempting to call BS. I checked your formula to see if I would agree with it for use of probability, and makes sense, I had changed it and tried to figure what normal percentage made making 10 in a row around 50% chance, and it seemed about right for anecdotal purposes. Thanks for the video, not just for the nerdy brain crunching I got to do, but for bringing back some nice memories. Keep it up! And Incredible they were able to make this happen with the pressure on.
I hate to break it to you but that’s not applicable at all because your dad actually knows how to shoot free throws. It would be a little more accurate if it was referring to 40+ people who have never touched a basketball before making free throws
I just meant the statistic on probability that someone would make it X many times in a row based off of Y shooting percentage, I guessed my dad would have around 50% chance of making 10 free throws (unpressured on our court) correlated to about 91% free throw percentage, which seemed to track about right.
As far as doing justice for the barstool sports guys, I thought 60% was fair, from what I understood there were some former basketball players there and I highly doubt there were many if any there who had never touched a basketball or took a shot. I wasn't really comparing my father too the barstool sport's guys achievement statistically, to get an accurate percentage to use for the probability statistic he had we would have to add in 40 new variables to the equation, as they all would have different FT% etc.

-Each round Dave and Dan will select 5 teammates to participate with them as a team to reach 41 free throws in a row
-Every person on this team must make a minimum of 2 free throws
-A player on the team can make a max of 10 free throws in a row
-Dave will have to hit the 15th, 30th, and 41st free throws
-Group starts with 75 mulligans. They can use 1 per round
-After all mulligans are used, the group only gets one mulligan every 3 rounds

Somehow I remember that Dallas had a game with 49/50 free throws made but the last one was the miss. It was a long time ago, but with Nowitzki (I know this doesn't make it much easier to find considering he played 21 years there). Maybe my memory just fails me though.
I think a good idea for a video would be if jxmmy found out which nba season was the most competitive based on record that year and also which season had the most closed games
The less than 16 hours were amazing but the games were truly a unicorn since we know how much pressure there is in an NBA game and you add on the mental game in FT shooting and fatigue.
By putting this info out there and potentially influencing nba players and staff, will there be an uptick in free throw percentages moving forward?
This is why I’m not in leadership position, if I was in charge of a team we would focus on this to the absolute detriment of the company.

But also, they attempted this over 7600 shots? Steve Nash has 3384 FTA in his CAREER. And he had streaks of 74, 53, 49,48, 47, and 45.
Also, Rick Barry had 23 straight (underhand) in one game in the ABA which is absolutely insane.

Curry once hit 104 (somewhere around that number) consecutive 3-point cornershots in practice. They did an entire ESPN segment and just had the tape of Curry throwing 3-pointers in the lower left corner.
The best free throw shooter ever comes from the Big East, Brian Baptiste. Even in his 50’s, coaching in a button down and dress shoes, he could lace 10 straight without a sweat, no guide hand needed. UMD coach is brilliant.

Something to keep in mind is that the exhaustion and pressure make NBA players miss much more than they would in practice. Nash hit 98% years after retiring when working with someone on a CZcams video, but his career average is just a bit over 90%

I think a big factor why it doesn't happen a lot in games is that between each free throw in an actual game you also have to play NBA level basketball, so at least half the time you're going to the line you're majorly fatigued, which is gonna have a massive effect on the accuracy of your shots. Same reason why the barstool guys were shooting at 80% for the challenge; a person that is just shooting free throws, no matter how good they are, is gonna be pretty good at them; definitely not 60%. Give a group of NBA players an hour and I think they could as a group have a streak as long as or longer than 41.
I watched alot of the stream and it was really entertaining especially if you know everyone involved
I immediately recalled and soon found the playoff game from May 21, 2003, when the Mavs made 49 FTs in a row (after missing the first one). However this was a streak by players of only one team, not both teams.
The Spurs shot 31/48 FTs that game. The teams thus combined for 98 FTs. Doesn't sound like much fun to watch.
In that game for the Mavs, Dirk hit 17/17, Finley hit 10/10, Van Excel hit 7/7, Najera hit 7/8 (missed the first FT of the game), Nash hit 6/6, and Walt Williams hit 2/2.
The Spurs lost by three points because Tim Duncan shot like an Average Joe from the line lol (12/19 - even though he shot 14/20 from the field).
