I've never seen an instance where the umpire giving the safe sign means the runner is out.
It can mean _not_ a dropped strike 3, as in he picked it clean.

The safe signal is given when a ball is not caught.
If the catcher was asking the ump if he tagged the batter out and received a safe signal, then this is on the catcher. Should've at least gestured to first even if there was no play available so everyone else could see.
Watching the whole clip makes this loss even worse. They blew a 4-run lead AND dropped a game-winning pop out? Crazy.

The pickoff attempt at 1st. CF dropped a fairly routine fly ball. Popup to P. So many chances to complete the victory. Then on the easiest chance to seal victory, the C gets thoroughly confused on a standard uncaught 3rd strike. Ugh.

@@mustaffa1611he was safe from that tag. A lot of times when there is a tag attempt the ump will signal safe or out. The catcher made the safe sign when the catcher attempted to tag the runner after the drop third strike. Now whether that was a good call no one but the runner and catcher will ever know but regardless the catcher saw him give the safe sign after the tag attempt and could still have thrown the ball to first, or posted up at home to make sure the other runner didn’t score. He instead chose to put the ball in his pocket and celebrate. 100% on the catcher

Someone on the losing team had a bunch of negative karma on the books. That amount of fuckups, bad pitchinng, missing a pop up, mistaking the umps sign, etc……… this amount of continual mistakes doesn’t happen randomly.

If the kid had just dropped the ball on the ground then one of his teammates may have been able to play it. However, with the ball firmly in the back pocket of the catcher, they had no chance to even know where it was.

Yeah lol! I just realized that the catcher is arguing safe while giving the safe sign back to the ump. Like yeah kid, he was safe. That's the exact opposite of what you wanted. It's like he confused what out and safe meant.
I've had a catcher interpret this incorrectly multiple times, and I've asked one of them how they get it crossed up - I'm told they accidentally think the umpire is making a call on whether or not they dropped the ball or that safe means "they're" safe; because "how can a batter be safe?" It's a championship game, every kid on that time should've been screaming at him to throw to first/tag the runner until they got the out call - and heard it. I'd have waited for the runner to walk to the dugout if I was on first.
I mean, I kinda get it, cause the tag was so obvious that he really just didn´t expect the ump to rule this anything else, which is why his brain probably went into `whatever signal the ump gives probably means we´ve won´-mode. He just didn't take into account that the ump didn't have a great vantage point
I didn't even catch that when I saw this on another channel. The person who did that breakdown even said the catcher could've made the tag and might not have seen the ump's safe sign before turning away, and others in the comments were agreeing with it. Now it's very clear he did see the ump make the safe sign, so there's no question he just doesn't know the rules and cost his team the championship.

Also props to the last batter who ran after the catcher dropped the ball on the last strike. I think it would have been easy for him to not run, considering he just struck out and the ball was right next to him, but he chose to run hard anyways and it ultimately started the chaos that gave them the win. Smart baseball on his part.
It's an old cliche but you miss every shot you don't take. Going every single time as hard as you can creates opportunities others would miss.

The reason for the rule is that the strike out rule exists to guarantee a ball in play. A third strike is considered to put a ball in play. Usually, this is put out by the catcher catching the ball, but when he drops it, they have to find another way. Essentially, it's a rule from the very early days of baseball, but it is important enough to make a difference in the 1941 world series

There was a softball game where they thought they had a walk-off rbi single, but the runner never went to first and just started celebrating, causing them to lose, and this reminded me of it.
The 1908 World Series had a similar thing. The Cubs would win that year but then didn’t win again until 2016.

Fred Merkel of the Giants was on first and didn't touch second on what appeared to be the game winning single. occurred, as he was celebrating the apparent win. . The ball was then thrown to second for a force-out to end the 9th inning. The game ended in a 1-1 tie and was called on account of darkness. A make-up game was played, and the Cubs won. Forever nicknamed, "Bonehead" Merkel after that.

Jomboy didn't include the game audio in this breakdown, but in the footage with the audio you can hear some guy frantically yelling, "two outs! there's only two outs!!" and that makes it extra sad for the losing red team.
I'm not sure but I do think the person screaming was the second base man. In my opinion, he was the only guy on the losing team that earned a win, but just wasn't given one.

@@technomage6736 while he was screaming two outs it was a tie game and the winning run was on first. So once he rounded all four bases they won. Second base man yelling two outs was trying to find the ball to get the batter (winning run) out.

Even if he was thrown out, they could have ruled him safe, due to interference from all the other players on the field. So, for sure, that was the right thing to do. Just keep running until the play is over.

I disagree with "the other team didn't really earn it". They plugged away to win a game. And props to the batter for not complaining about a called 3rd strike in the dirt he DIDNT SWING AT, kept his head and ran to first. Major props.
Younger catcher's love to set up 8-10ft behind home plate. Not saying the pitch was a strike or not, but that any off-speed pitch is liable to hit the dirt with some of these catchers, and it's awful to call those games. I don't like having them move up in the box - it feels like an unfair advantage when the other team's got their catcher up close. That said, never judge balls/strikes on where the ball is caught (or not caught, in this case - it'll almost always hit the dirt, strike or not, unless it's a fastball when the catcher doesn't pick it).

They can say they "didn't earn it" but if the other team is gonna fuck up that bad I'm going to make more fun of you for not taking it
They also learned the rules. Maybe if the other team spent less time practicing their celebration moves & more time on rules of the game, they would have won.
Errors are part of the game. If you can hang in there long enough to get some errors to take advantage of, you have earned the win.

Thank you SO much for the entire inning breakdown! I don't feel nearly so bad for the losing team as it wasn't just one bone-head play....they worked HARD to throw this game away and the 'ball-in-pocket' play just the crowning achievement. Hope everyone on the field from both teams took home some basic lessons of Life from this.
The fact that the catcher stopped playing, tells me he very likely tagged him and it was missed. Still no excuse for thinking safe meant out though.
@@mikeallison5549 There’s another theory that, after (allegedly) missing the tag, the catcher was actually gesturing to 1B as if to say “1B is occupied, he’s out automatically” (incorrect b/c already 2 out).

Actually the runner on first did not. On regular speed video it took him 11 seconds to get to 2nd and he was a potential force out.
Someone who was at the game said the runner from first was on the way to the dugout, only went back to run when everyone screamed at him, that’s why he’s so late in the video.

The umpire literally confirmed directly to the catcher that he needs to throw to first, and the catcher saw the confirmation.
During our championship game, I literally *rolled* the ball to our first basement on the last out of the game. Super-tight/groomed infield, so it was like a golf green. It was the only way to be 100% certain I wouldn't blow it - and that the first baseman wouldn't either. ALWAYS play on, until you're told to stop by the umpires.
Whichever team that brought the wrong uniforms should have lost by forfeit.
Why even bother looking at the ump? Just throw the ball whether or not you made the tag. Worst case scenario you throw it after already tagging him out. Complete brain fart by the catcher, but I guess dropped 3rd outs are a rare situation.
@@B3Band He means even if the ump had called out you still throw it to first base. And/or that you throw it to first even if you think you tagged him. It prevents any chance of confusion and reduces the chance of the runner getting to first safely if the ump says you didn't tag him.

@@Zerbey yes it was just the catcher's fault. The other fielders may not know the exchange from him and the umpire so they'll take the catcher's lead on that. Second, the catcher hid the ball in his pocket so the teammates aware of what's going on couldn't find it. Now, had he just left the ball near home plate and no one picked it up. Then yes, the argument could be made it's not entirely the catcher's. But in this case, he owns it all.

Can’t imagine how the catcher feels. Sports will always have that special place in athletes lives, and to say you have a state championship ring is the ultimate goal. These players will likely never play competitive sports like this ever again. To blow it like this, I’d need people to help talk me off the ledge.

I think this demonstrates the very real phenomenon where people see what they expect to see (magicians exploit this all the time). In all likelihood, the catcher did tag the batter out. He knew he'd tagged the batter out because he felt his mitt touch. He knew the game was supposed to be over. But the ump blew the call. And because the catcher was expecting the ump to call the out, he saw the ump make a signal, and in his excitement his mind interpreted it as out because he *knew* he'd tagged the runner out.
Agreed. I think that's what happened too. The catcher still should've thrown the ball to first just to be safe, but it all just sucks
@@IcyTorment I don't mean his brain changed the physical motion of the ump's "safe" sign into the motion for an "out" sign. I mean it reconciled the sign he saw with the outcome he expected. e.g. "safe", meaning he had safely tagged out the runner. I suppose this could be called confusing the signs. I'm just explaining why his brain confused them.
This was what is confusing me… I mean he tagged the runner he’s out. It’s on video. They lost cuz the ump blew the call. Of course, it’s easy to armchair it and say he should have throw to first anyway and that’s true and is still a valuable lesson but I don’t blame the kid too much.
The ump shouldn’t have called safe at home plate. He tagged him, looked at the umpire, the umpire made a call that was not his to make. The only motion that umpire could have made was “out.”
So, the catcher confused it.

Most of that team shares the blame. Everyone on that field is responsible for knowing the ball's not dead.
I'd be mostly pissed at the catcher and then slightly resentful of everyone else who came in to celebrate. I'd MAYBE also wonder if I could have yelled louder, like the top of my lungs, if that would have made a difference. There's yelling, and then there's shouting with everything you got, the latter is usually sufficient to get people to look.

In my experience, "safe" is the only call you want as a player on offense. "Out" is what you're looking for as a catcher in that situation. Those calls seem to have worked pretty well in baseball over the last...100 or so years.
@jomboymedia you say the other team didn't really earn it... I say they knew the rules and never gave up... they earned it.
They knew the rules, and so do you. A full commitment's what you're thinking of, you wouldn't get this from any other team.

Catcher should have tagged him.. screamed that he got him! .. while he also throws to first for insurance!

Not even insurance. The umpire literally told him that the tag didn't count. So there is no "just in case", just throw the ball the first!
This camera had a better view than the ump and it looks like he tagged him. Should have thrown to first anyway though.
@Josh Mann that's my fault. It looks like he does tag him. But yes he still shoulda paid attention to the safe sign and known to throw to firsr.

After watching the full sequence of events i’m dumbfounded at how they were up 5-1 to begin with. They allowed only 1 run in 6.5 innings then immediately reverted into being a t-ball club
Disagree with Jomboy the winning team did earn it by keeping their head in the game, hustling, not giving up oh and not prematurely celebrating

This might be the only time in history that a game ending strike out turned into a game winning inside the park home run. RIP the catcher's confidence.
Was not a home run the batter did not score or did he need to.
Seeing the dropped 3rd out by the pitcher makes this event even more unfortunate. At the perceived "end" of the game you could see that no other player on his team was more excited and relieved that his error didn't cost them the game...but it did. (With a lot of help from his catcher)
Unfortunate? The pitcher blew it. He got lit up all inning, walked a guy, can't catch an easy ball, and hit a batter. He deserved a loss.
@@cmdrfunk Then the catcher blew it worse. Even at that level the catcher is taught to throw to first anyways on a close tag just in case the tag was missed by the umpire. Even better yet would have the catcher step away from the baseline and throw without attempting a tag at all. It is the winning out, no need to get fancy.
@@cmdrfunk that pop-up was the shortstop's responsibility, not the pitcher's. That play is on the coach.
Saw in the reddit thread that the rule is to allow play to complete when it isn't malicious, even if the players come on and make contact, and decide what to do after. Kind of like how in obstruction you let the play finish before making the ruling. I think in this case, it was called perfectly right. Maybe there is something about putting the ball in his pocket, but that would be a really weak call.
Putting your ball in your pocket could be considered intentionally using your uniform to control the ball (like throwing your glove, or hat at a ball), which is 3 bases awarded. So either way, the run scores.
@@FUGP72 It's 3 on a batted ball, 2 on a thrown ball. This was a ball already possessed. I don't think it was illegal, and you wouldn't kill the play anyway--at most, you might signal delayed dead ball and see what happens. When the non-offending team scores the winning run, you let the play stand.
@@kurtissjacobs5618 Two or three bases is the same in this case, the winning run would score. Because it is always 2 bases from the one the runners are going to. Since the winning run was already on his way to 2nd by then, it is 2 additional bases, meaning home.

Hard to believe this was a championship game with all the mistakes this team made.
They thought they were going to just cruise to the win and when that didn’t happen their brains just stopped working. Wheels just completely fell off under the pressure.
Reminds me of Nigel Mansell celebrating his win at the Montreal GP on his last lap, but he hit his ignition switch with his arm movements. F1 cars can't be restarted from the cockpit so he stopped on track and was classified one lap down.

For that pop up, shortstop and second baseman should have been running in. It’s so much easier for them to catch it.
To be fair to the catcher, it did appear that he tagged the runner and I can't imagine he would celebrate if he wasn't sure that he tagged them.
Brutal. Reminds me of that clip from a few years ago where a high school (I think?) football championship game was decided on the last play of the game. The team trailing was attempting a field goal and inexplicably, the defending team put 2 players very deep. The kick was short, one kid caught the ball and started running up field to celebrate and tossed the ball to the ground. The other team picked it up and ran it in for a TD.
There was a bonehead one in a Washington State Playoff game about a decade ago. They ran time out up by something like 4 or 5 and kneeled in the endzone after the clock hit 0 and tossed the ball down. Problem is you can't give yourself up in the endzone and have to be touched down. So a defender picked the ball up for the game winning TD.

That is super tough. The build up, the momentum, putting the pressure on. Pitcher starts to lose control a little, and drops the last out. Then the poor catcher has a brain fart at the worst moment. Heart breaker for sure.

Yes! I don't watch college baseball so I didn't know anything about these teams, but was at a local Chili's having dinner and this game was on and I just started glancing at it. Damn thing had me in the edge of my seat all night lol
This really boiled down to discipline, and the one teams lack of it caused them to miss multiple opportunities to close out the game, while the other teams discipline & wherewithal allowed them to execute for the victory…..At the end of the day, I hope the kid’s of the losing team learns from their errors, and realize, it’s only a game, and life is surely bigger than baseball, or that one play….👌🏾👍🏾

The catcher surely made the tag, otherwise he would have tossed to first instead of turned to the ump. I think the ump blew the call, then it all fell apart.
@@carlodave9 The catcher may have tried to tag him, but how do you watch a kid not understand what safe means and conclude "Yeah, definitely the ump's fault"
The “Safe” sign is baseball is referring to the runner is “safe’. Always has been from little league to the majors.
An out sign in baseball is the umpire clenches his/her fist and signals that the runner is out.
Umpire signaled the universal “runner is safe” sign.
I can’t imagine the aftermath for the losing team, especially the catcher. Hope he’s okay.🙏

Pitchers shouldn't catch pop-ups, especially one that high. 3B or 1B should have come in. And they did earn it, knowing the rules and paying attention is part of the game.
There are three things that always exist: Death, taxes, and that a baseball game that ends with a walk off strikeout is not an earned win. Batter struck out and won. He didn't get a hit, he didn't walk, and he didn't get hit by a pitch. The game tying and winning runs went down as UNEARNED! By rule, it cannot be an earned win.
And the catcher totally messed up, but it is only a game. Now if this happened at the MLB level, then yes, that catcher would be hated forever.

oldatargiamer: regarding the pop-ups, this is high school baseball. Often times, the best fielder is the pitcher. PItchers often split time at SS, so when it comes to a pop-up, the pitcher may be the surest out, as long as they get off the mound clean.
@@LemonStir What are you talking about? First of all, whether the run is earned or unearned depends on whether the ruling is wild pitch or passed ball. In this instance, with the ball in the dirt, it likely would have been charged as a wild pitch, in which case, the runs scored are earned. Besides which, there is a world of difference between an earned run, and an 'earned' win or loss. Pitchers, by rule, can get a loss or a win regardless of whether the runs scored are earned or unearned. Put it this way: pitcher comes in with a one run lead in the bottom of the ninth. The other team scores 2 runs on errors. Pitcher still gets the loss, though not any earned runs scored against him.

That was a bigger loss than just one player's mistake tho...
Didn't matter how many saw it. The catcher made the mistake, and then put the ball in his pocket, and hugged and rolled on the ground while the game slipped away.

The outfielders were running in, but they're dozens of yards away from being able to do anything.
The coaches cant do the playing for the kids or they'd get DQ'd- that's pretty universal. The pitcher shouldve watched the ump, as he has as good of a sight to the play as anyone. Pitcher is just as much to blame as catcher, sheesh they deserve each other.

Scoring an infield home run on a dropped third strike has to be a sports record.
The dropped strike 3 rule reminds me of the movie "BASEketball" when they start making up rules to get an advantage as they play.

You don’t call “safe” as a better is leaving home, you call it at 1st base. That confused the catcher.
@@airforcex9412 On a dropped third strike the umpire DOES give a signal on a attempted tag as he is the closest.
The “Uncaught Third Strike” Mechanic is used by the Plate Umpire
If the batter-runner attempts to advance and a tag attempt misses, use the “Safe” mechanic and verbalize, “no tag”.
maybe he was certain he tagged the runner. You can't tell from this video since his body was blocking the view of his glove and the runner, but I'd but my money on the catcher actually tagged the runner before he took off

@@riotpb10 he misunderstood, it's clear he thought that meant out when he signaled to the second baseman. Unfortunate loss, also he is a kid man, cut him some slack. Lets not have a "you fucked up so lets rub your face in it" mentality, that is not how children or anyone learns.
