Development of the Ukrainian BTR-4 started in the early 2000s after the full completion of BTR-94 fielding in 1999. The first prototype was displayed in 2006, and accepted for military service by Ukraines Ministry of Defense in 2008. One such factory that produced vehicles for the Soviet Union during WW2 but now creates unique Ukrainian tanks is the Kharkiv Morozov Machine Building Design Bureau in service since 1927 and Kiev Armored Plant that has been around since 1935.
Fellow history nerds will immediately recognize the KMDB as the company that designed the T-34 which was the backbone of the Soviet tank force in WWII. Is it ironic or coincidence that they are now creating weapons to fight against the Russian army? The Kharkiv Morozov manufactures the BTR4 but from what I could gather on open source intelligence about modern Ukraines armored vehicle production it seems like maybe only the Malyshev Factory in Kharkiv is still operating.

Awesome video again. One thing to mention the capital of Ukraine is pronounced Keev (not Keyav). Russians are pronouncing it like that and it could be an insult for Ukrainians. Just saying...

As an Ukrainian i was amazed of how dealdly it is, especially during those fights in Mariupol, damn dat 30mm cannon wub-wub-wub against tanks and ruzz infanty makes me proud of its accuracy and for our defence industry in general. Hope it will help us to survive as well as stuff from all over the world
The Taiwanese should be looking at these. Given their geography(lots of mountains cut through with well developed road systems and LOTS of urban areas) I think highly mobile wheeled vehicles that pack a punch and carry ATGMs can punch considerably above their weight in the case of a Chinese invasion.

@@moisesaguila1875 Yes there were a lot of problems early on, but since that first patch got returned(and corrupt execs got fired and/or arrested for it) then many other foreign nations have bought and not returned it.

The US would sanction them worse than Russia because Taiwan is the semiconductor manufacturer of the world making something like 75% or more of the most advanced chips on the planet so if they fall there will be a massive technological crisis across the globe because the chip shortages that we were experiencing just a year ago would double or triple in their severity I think with just that huge threat alone the US would sanction the hell out of China. And let's not forget that those US companies that make a lot of their electronics in China won't be able to make them if China destroys their semiconductor supply. Also Japan has pledged their support for Taiwan in the case that China invades and because the US has a defense treaty with Japan if China fights Japan the US will join in just to defend Japan so in the event of an invasion it will quickly turn into a World War.
BTR-4 "Butsefal" is insanely brilliant and effective machine. Unfortunately, Ukraine hasn't had enough time to produce a good number of them and entered the war with only about 400 of them.

One key thing you failed to mention is that rear doors allow soldiers to exit concealed and protected by the vehicle's armor instead of being exposed to fire the moment they step out. An enemy may not even know soldiers are dismounting until they fan out to the sides.
A lot of these vehicles were lost in Mariupol, but they really put on a good showing first.
They proved very effective in a situation that was very difficult- surrounded, cut off from resupply or repair and in a dense urban battlefield. They were especially effective at outflanking tanks.
I foresee demand for them increasing exponentially when the war is over.

Well, they'll get them back along with more Russian abandoned equipment when they retake Mariupol in the spring. U.S has a bunch of older non V hauled armored vehicles we're no longer using in active battles. Suspect against IED's but would definitely assist the UA until something better comes along.
@@marcusanton95 well… at this point, UA is literally a battleground test arena for obsolete weapons and vehicles for the Cold War and see what they did correctly in a huge war theatre they were largely designed for and mean to operate in. Plus it’s a scrap metal “junkyard” with C4. Except the scraping is on the OPFOR in UA :wink:

I saw Ukrainian BTRs in Iraq in 2003. I got pretty excited, because in my Cold War days, they were the opfor. And now here they were providing security for me! I think they were older Soviet BTRs.

The videos from the point of view of a BTR4's gunner engaging other armoured vehicles in the streets of Mariupol and the drone footage of a BTR4 taking out two T72s (I think also in Mariupol) have really stuck with me from all the frontline footage of the early months of the war... Thanks for giving a great vehicle the spotlight it deserves! Fingers crossed many more of these will soon be manufactured 🇺🇦
Yes the 30mm gun is impressive, it can knock out any MBT, chunks do fly off no matter what tank your using, it will take out it's sights or disable the tracks
Me too, that footage was phenomenal, they didn't hold back to a safe distance, they went in and directly engaged and destroyed their enemy.
I thought that they deserved medals for their courage and professionalism, but as with the IDF, they're just happy to rid their country of invading genocidal enemies...

Whenever someone asked me after seeing these videos why is it such a hard fight for Russia, it was much easier to answer - it's not just the bravery and competence, it's also the confidence in their equipment and abilities.
Both of these videos showed a BTR4 starting a fight from adventageous position against enemy with superior equipment and/or numbers. It wasn't guaranteed to work and left little room for error...but they went in and engaged the enemy when right then and there they didn't have to.
the 30mm gun can blow through a tank's armor with repetitive shots at the same spot. quite impressive..
I remember that one of the captured BTR-4's was captured back by Ukrainian forces during their counteroffensive. One of the few instances where they captured back their equipment.

Больше всего БТР4 было в 92 бригаде, она единственная полностью была ими вооружена. Харьков мой защищала. Тут их и потеряно было больше всего, уж больно соотношение сил в Харьковской области в начале войны было плохое.

Russia gets too much credit for any of the successes that the Soviet Union had, as it was a collaboration of many countries (including Ukraine) and they all had a naive notion of a shared PURPOSE & ideology to motivate them... Ukraine has always had a strong industrial base & skilled people.

The USSR was Russia, Ukraine, Romania, and all the others were vassel states. I don't mean to diminish their achievements and contributions but it's just plain wrong to pretend it was an equal partnership. Most Soviet states wanted independence but had no chance against the Russian war machine. That's why most have chosen to distance themselves from Russia and cozy up to the West as soon as they had the option.

@@boomerisadog3899 I don’t think you understand what OP is getting at. Ukraine and the warsaw pack proxies have a lot of native industries and talents. Hell even Armenia had people migrate to the USSR and design some of the best military equipment they have. Unlike the US these migrants never fully integrated and with the fall of the Soviet Union a lot of that talent left Russia proper. Now Russia has a military and military equipment industry that is basically smooching off the reputation of the old soviet industry that no longer exists.

As ua officer i had experience with 4th. Its really marvelous vehicle. Very fast, easy to drive, good armament.

The BTR4 is basicall like a LAV25 to me. Modern design, amphibious and doors on the rear. + ATGMs. I'd say, good vehicle. Does the BTR4MV1 come with thermals? I think so.

About halfway through my deployment in Yusafiyah, in early 2006, my platoon received a Humvee with a Raven system with .50.
While little combat happened at a distance, at night at a blocking position, being able to see at a distance with night or heat vision, was a game changer.
Add in their drones we didn’t have, and a Ukrainian armored vehicle truly has eyes on the battlefield to call in support.
Pretty cool. Saw a video of one take out a T72 from a burst to the side. Then saw another vid of one wiping out an entire BMP3 crew and squad. That RWS and reverse speed is absolutely amazing

Fun fact (if i remember correctly): BM-7 Parus is a continuation of the family of combat modules for boats. BM-3 'Shturm' (assault), BM-4 'Grim' (thunder), BM-5 'Shtil' (calm, like calm sea), BM-5M 'Katran' (squalus), BM-7 'Parus' (sail). As far as I know, BM-7 was never installed on boats unlike BM-5M that is installed on Project 58155.
Also if interested in BTR-94 module, or Ukrainian armor, or just tankporn, look up for 'BRDM with BAU-23х2' (Also i've seen this module installed on HMMWV). Or 'BTR-80 with BMP-3 turret'. I doubt you could find any pictures, but believe me, they do exist.

@@laszlokocsis7817 I believe that BMP-3 turret is wider, so to fit it on BTR-80 they put a couple of tens of centimiters of superstructure. Also its not, like, usual thing to do, just some experimental stuff of the 90s.
There is a BTR-90M with BMP-3 turret. I doubt you could fit this turret to the smaller BTR-80.

My fave clip at 13:30 was a BTR/ BMP taking on a T72 from the rear. You can see rounds initially bouncing off. It's extraordinary footage and immensely brave of the crew.
I think the BTR-4 cemented it’s legacy by being utilized and filmed by the Azov regiment during the Siege of Mariupol. The videos they showed demonstrated to people how effective of a killing machine it was. Plus, the heroism demonstrated by Azov and the Ukrainian marines during the siege also added towards the BTR-4’s track record.

I always wondered about the windows. I've seen plexiglass that can resist heavy machine gun rounds, and always wondered why they weren't fitted on APCs. The BTR basic design always seemed capable, but poorly engineered for what it ultimately became. Ukraine really improved on what used to be a death trap. Wow. I'm impressed.
Because it scatches easy, is more susceptible to temperature chages, and is more expensive.

My Plt Sgt's RG-31 was hit by an RPG. warhead detonated on the cage armor, melted copper jet hit the windshield, didn't even crack it, but then somehow wrapped around the edges of it before entering the cabin and splattering into his face, costing him an eye.
That thing is still a deathtrap. It has no armor and everything except rifle caliber round will penetrate the armor and probably kill someone.
@@Asmodi16 You just identified the difference between APC and IFV. Most APCs have only protection against small arms and shell splinters, also in NATO.

10:22 The cage armor does not actually work like that. Cage armor works by two ways, giving a chance (around 50%) to either crush the fuze to prevent detonation or disrupt the shape of the shaped charge to prevent optimal detonation. The distance can actually make the shaped charge better because most RPGs detonate too close for optimal effect, which is why spaced armor is also not ideal against shaped charges.
BTRs, as most APCs, just hasnt such armor to feel the difference between optimal and not so optimal detonations, but explosion on armor often destroys hull by itself and no care about HEAT element. So it much better to explode NOT on hull anyway.

But as to the basic design, I've often wondered about the advisability of making an armoured vehicle but with inflatable tyres?? Can they drive with all of one sides tyres down?

@@TeddyBear-ii4yc What are you talking about? 7 inch thick add on armor? on an IFV? Are you talking about ERA? Most western militaries I can think of still aren't widely using ERA on their wheeled AFVs quite yet. And tracked stuff like the Bradley and Warrior are in a completely different weight class and cant really be compared. And if you're wondering about the viability of wheeled armored vehicles, western militaries use them all the time as well. The tires are all heavily reinforced and run-flats. So they are really durable, and even if they do lose pressure they wont immobilize the vehicle.
@@Monia_V Yeah, that is the designed purpose of slat armor. The slats are spaced just right in order to be able to crush the ogive and short circuit the piezoelectric fuse on RPG-7 warheads (and other warheads of similar style), thereby literally de-fusing it. Notably this does mean that slat armor is ineffective against warheads which have a different type of fuse.
I love Ukrainian military industry I love how they modernize old soviet equipment its such a aesthetic, I love BTR-4 and especially BTR-3 which is a big upgrade for such a weak APC also check out BTR-4MVI it looks like a NATO 8x8 APC
And there's also a BMP-1 modification which swaps the original turret with BM-7

I guess the original decision to place the engine in the rear of the hull on Russian BTRs dates back to BTR-60. While testing another prototype, they noticed that the vehicle was poorly balanced. Especially, when an unloaded truck jumped off a drop into the water, it tended to nod with the front. That was a huge design flaw since an unloaded truck could not use its water-jet propulsion engine, because it was literally hanging in the air.

I'll correct it a little: the turret module on BTR-4 is called "Parus", which translates as "Sail". This is very symbolic, by the way, when we see the BTR-4 in the water.

While Ukraine can Produce their Electronics themself, Russia can't. So they buy the Electtronics for their "Hightech" Products outside of Russia and say they have a working production Line. And take the Money for it. Russia is now working to get the ability to produce 90nm Chips. Which means they didn't have reached it yet. And thats a 2002/2003 Process. Pentium 4, Athlon 64, Playstation 2. The Hightech Electronic Centers of the Soviets was in Kharkiv and Dresden East-Germany.

That one which produced the footage coming out of Mariupol earlier this year wreaked havoc.
It's entirely possible they made more of them than we think. I think it was about a month ago or so, there was some Ukrainian fighters that were filmed hitting ground targets, and a lot of defense pros were asking, 'where the hell did they get them?' I'm not very knowledgeable about their aircraft, and I can't remember which one they were referring to, but I watched a video on Ward Carrolls channel and they were saying that it appeared the Ukrainians had been able to restore some aircraft that everybody thought were unusable. So, they appear to be pretty damn resourceful.
There were also jokes going around earlier in the war about the US supplying Ukraine with "aviation parts", and those parts consisting of intact NATO-compatible MiG-29s in one shipment, and their seat cushions in another. We don't know precisely what we gave them to keep their air force operational.

The Polish government was sarcastically joking on Twitter about "losing" an entire armored division's worth of tanks with the obvious implication that they were shipped across the border this summer, and has put in ridiculously large orders for American and South Korean tanks to replace them.

This is a well made video...
The BTR4 is a fine vehicle and the first progressed type to realisticly aproach nato quality.. with more improvements it may even be comparable with current IFVs. Though it will never be as protected as some of the more extreme vehicles it does have a much lower cost and better dismount capacity...
Regarding Ukraine war.. the USA is still reluctant to provide MBT and Fighter aircraft... the sensible step would be to provide 2 or 3 hundred cavalry Bradley from storage as these are no more powerful than an ex polish t72 and would be easy to deploy and maintain...
I'm not sure how apt it is to compare a IFV to a modernized T-72
That said, yeah, and maybe some Strykers too, and maybe those with the 105 mm cannon.

Because you know, Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union and participated in many Soviet achievements, such as the space program, the defense industry, etc.

Reminds me a lot of the Stryker Dragoon in concept (lighter weight wheeled APC given 30mm turret to turn into an IFV), especially with the modularity concept mentioned in the beginning. Would be interesting to see a direct comparison between the two

Getting to see international technology get used on a modern battlefield is probably the military-industrial complex's wet dream. It sounds terrible but defense contractors are probably excited to watch their equipment get used and to improve it. Sadly improving it means being better at killing people, but also air defense systems that aren't the iron dome. Double edged swords are fun!
it's more about defending ourselves from warmongering autocracies than just killing people. We live in very tragic times and democracies must be armed to the teeth if we want to keep our rights and liberties.

10:25 that’s not how cage/slat armor actually works. Contrary to popular belief, cage/slat armor is designed to destroy the fuse of warheads like the RPG-7 by crushing the nose cone, which disconnects the fuse from the explosive. It doesn’t work like spaced armor against HEAT, which is a logical assumption.

BTR 4 reminds me of the Greyhound the US used in WWII. Lacked armor but had a decent cannon that could even kill Tigers/Panthers from behind. They were used heavily in the battle of the bulge. Like the BTR4 the Greyhound was also a wheeled vehicle.

I wonder how many Active Duty units use your videos for training. The information about these foreign nations equipment sounds really useful as a baseline they can build off of.
I imagine that post war they will be investing into how to build AA designed to counter drones into some of the module packages. Not saying they wouldn't do it now if they could but I'd imagine building a new factory in western Ukraine to build proven models to help resupply the front would be of utmost importance.

American Bradley has advanced electronics, but it's still a vehicle from the 60s that doesn't include unmanned turret for one, it also cannot swim although once upon a time it could. Ukrainians, despite having a small base, produce very deadly and modern armor. Unlike Russian ones, theirs actually work too.

I live in 10 minutes walking from Malyshev factory. It wasn't destroyed and I saw how btr-4 came from it in september, when I went to hospital near factory.

The BTR-4 seems pretty similar to the LAV-25 in the role it covers, both can protect against 7,62 and 12,7 to the front and have an autocannon to support the dismounted infantry and defeat light armored vehicles.
The LAV-25 is definitely the closest comparable. I'm not sure which has superior armor, but I'd surmise the LAV has that edge whereas the BTR-4 has an edge in firepower.

I find the video extremely informative, and you put it in a format that is progressive while providing the viewer with GOBS of information. Your video is NOT boring and I like that it is in a logical format, complete with logical conclusions and evaluations. Vehicles with eight wheels come close to the coolness of treaded vehicles. I bet eight wheels are more fuel efficient than treads. Treads add a lot of friction to a drive train.
