I’ve spent hours upon hours just doing favors for people, adjusting goals, faculty training, (I want a magic based Byleth) and focusing on making my students better. I think it works bc all that work you do throughout the month pays off during the mission at the end of the month, you feel proud of yourself and your students for the work you/“they” did. And that combination is REALLY fun and satisfying to me.

Yes and no. While Support conversations have always been around, the characters that could converse were much more limited in a way that made a lot more sense. In Awakening and Fates, they tried to make it so you could match up [almost] anyone with anyone of the opposite gender... and that, combined with the custom avatar/self-insert character, made for a very, very lack-luster writing in a lot of places. Certain characters (such as Tharja) behaved _very_ inconsistently depending on who they were talking with. In other cases (like the farmboy from Awakening, whose name I'm blanking on), the characters end up doing so many different things between battles, it gets to be ridiculous when you consider the kind of tight time-frame the story is operating under. Even though the characters were fighting together, it doesn't mean that they'd associate with each other outside of battle. Some people just don't get along, personality clashes, and so they just don't talk or hang out outside of obligation - so it felt _weird_ in Awakening/Fates seeing the writers trying to force all of these disparate characters and personalities to match up... Awkward.
So yes, actually, as someone who's been playing FE since the first GBA release, I can pretty safely say that the 'dating sim' comment is not so unfounded. Exaggerated, yes, but very much present. I haven't picked up Three Houses yet, as I'm ambivalent about the change in aesthetic, so I can't comment on the support system here, but I'm hoping it's not to the same extreme as Awakening and Fates in terms of pairing options.

@@Draeckon While in 3 houses, all of the characters can A rank with the protagonist at the very least (with most of them being able to S rank with one gender or the other, sometimes both), thankfully, not every side character can max support every other side character. It's more like an older FE game where some characters can only go up to B rank while some outright don't have a support.
The side character shipping exists, but as there are no child characters it only affects the epilogue and is automated based on the number of support points one character has with another.

    @Liverator Před 3 lety +13

So for those on the fence about the game like I was, here are some aspects you might not see mentioned in typical reviews:
-Each of the several routes is roughly 60+ hours long, so it’ll definitely be worth the price tag if you enjoy the gameplay.
-Best part is that the New Game Plus mode is made in a way where replaying the game doesn’t feel monotonous and grindy since you can bypass things like class masteries that you’ve already gotten before.
-RNG, while prevalent, is not completely out of control. Divine Pulse, your get-out-of-jail-free card, does not reset RNG, so if you get a critical hit and rewind time, you’ll still get that crit. Same goes for misses (both for you AND the enemies), so you can plan around the RNG. This is true for most RNG in the game, don’t worry about losing some godly level-up stats, as you will still get those stats when you level even if you rewind time. Same goes for out of gameplay things too like class certifications.
-There’s also tons of customization, so if you find that you like glass-canon spellcasters more than typical melee units, you will find that many of those units can be turned into ranged units quite easily. Even if you get stuck with a pure melee unit that can’t be taught ranged attacks, you can always recruit units from other houses like a certain spellcaster who is totally not a child and nuke your enemies with her.
-Replayability is top notch. I’ve already mentioned how there’s other routes and how well the game handles New Game Plus, but the sheer number of characters with several potential skill paths really help as well. On your first playthrough you’ll be bound to miss many of broken applications of some characters only to later find out that this shy recluse can annihilate absolutely anything on the map from absolutely anywhere on the map.
-The maddening difficulty is a significant challenge and does more than simply ups the levels of enemies. It makes several seemingly small changes that have a large impact on the game. From most enemies having poisonous weapons to boss units having unrestricted mobility. It’s far more fun than simply having more enemies with higher stats.
As for downsides to the game:
-RNG does effect how a character develops, they have a set chance to gain a specific stat each time they level. Ex: a 35% chance to gain 1 HP. And while they are guaranteed to get at least 2 stats each time, characters can easily get screwed over if they don’t have a good chance for a stat to grow. Different classes give bonuses to these chances though. Ex: Brigands give an additional 10% chance to gain a Strength stat each level.
-Some characters are fairly bad comparatively and would require a lot of babysitting to get them to work well. Others might not scale well into the mid or late game (potentially due to bad RNG levels) but this isn’t as bad since you usually can pivot into something that works better. For example, if you have a character that used to one shot enemies, but has later fallen short, you can stack a bunch of equipment and abilities that buffs critical hit rate to have almost a guaranteed crit each time, or use several stat buff items and battalions to increase their speed so they can get double attacks each round.
The game is definitely worth it for those that enjoy strategy games and/or customization.

I actually watched this video before playing but my brother ended up purchasing the game and I actually play it more than he does lol. Needless to say, I really enjoy it! I love how you can cultivate relationships with the different students in your class and in other classes. I enjoy how you can kind of teach your students and help them focus to get stronger in certain areas over others because it makes you feel as though you are rewarded for it once you get to play on the battlefield by way of seeing your students defeat the bandits and monsters. I will say though that the system for teaching was a little bit difficult to understand so it took me a while to get the hang of it as well as the class system, and that kind of was a disadvantage because I found myself progressing through the story not really knowing what I was doing, so I found that at certain points some of my students were extremely lacking in certain areas or just simply taking a longer time to level up than other students in the beginning chapters. But it becomes a lot more fun when you finally get the hang of the lecture system. I also found it beneficial to try to battle as often as you can during non-story related mission/quests because when it comes time to actually do some sort missions, if you haven't leveled up enough then you'll be defeated in like 2 turns. But I really love how much content is in this game. I have almost 30 hours racked up for this game and I'm still on part 1 lol. Everything feels important, even the side missions and small seemingly unimportant quests. Definitely would recommend this game!

My 1st ever Fire Emblem game and I have to say I am not disappointed at all. Controls/combat are easy to understand and intuitive. The story has sucked me in and I can’t wait for my next playtime. In just 3 days I have put about 21 hours into the game which I am told is up to 80 hours for one house. There are parts of the game that can be repetitive and feel tedious but these are few and far between. I am very happy with the over all experience and can’t wait to start going though the other 2 houses.
    Updated 08/27/2019
When I originally posted my initial review I had only just started my play through. To my surprise, I finished the Black Eagles play through just a mere 15 hours later. This was a shock to me as I had originally thought it would be up to 80 hours. However, after spending more time with the game I am happy to say that at least for my play style 40 hours is long enough for me. The things in the above paragraph that I stated as tedious or becoming repetitive I found myself falling in love with, for example exploring the monastery and talking to the students and faculty and learning their stories and lore. I have to say I am completely satisfied with how the story was handled for the Black Eagles. They are without a doubt my favorite house. I have started my second play through and I have chosen to go with the Blue Lions. I am taking my time with this one and also doing more now that I know how the game mechanisms work. For example, I am doing more battles on my off days and training my students up so I can pass them on the exams. I would highly recommend this game to anyone. I believe it has a little something for everyone to enjoy. On a side note my Girlfriend watched me play some and she has now decided she would like to try playing. She has also chosen Black Eagles as her 1st house to play through.

I regularly play DnD with friends so I really enjoy the turn-based combat and also the amount of "customisation" you're allowed when instructing students. You can get more versatility out of the characters when they don't all follow their cookie cutter pathnotherwise houses like BL would be too same-same.
I enjoy micro managing and stress-free combat (no hectic button pushing etc.). 😅

I got the game Friday and have lost sleep over it. This is quickly becoming my favorite FE game BECAUSE of the life sim part and how customizable the units are. I know each unit was meant to take a certain class but in this game, you can really put each unit in any class you want from the start without hindering the gameplay to much whereas in previous titles I felt if I wanted to change a unit's class there needed to be 1-2 hours dedicated to training with the new weapons and leveling them before continuing with the story.

It was really a gamble when I decided to buy this game. I was too used to the PS4 graphics action-oriented games and even in JRPGs, I only played those that require constant movement and hack and slash and what not (Tales of Series, Star ocean, recent FF games), but I really found myself really invested with FE Three Houses. The story is engaging and even some of the characters plot lines. I like how this game makes you invested in these stories and character interactions which really add to the whole experience. I was always looking forward to the game mechanic of weekly schedules where you choose what you want to do: you can choose to build your character relationships, do some quests, or just battle it out in the field. Take note that everything you do in the school mechanic will affect your experiences in battle like how and what skills you will learn and use. But in conclusion, I thought that I would be bored and this will just be added in the backlogs of games I bought and not play it again after trying it, (I just wanted to but it because I was curious about the series and needed something to play while waiting for TLOU 2 in ps4) but it’s really an engaging and well thought-out game. I really recommend this.
