Nintendolife! You actually give *evidence* to back up your points. You don’t just say, “The characters are deep and well-written”, you also provide us with a concrete example. Fewer and fewer reviewers do this, yet without any examples, how am I supposed to know what they’re on about?!
So, thanks! 😍
It’s cuz so many people complain about spoilers
Spoilers boi
That example just spoiled one of the characters for me...
Right, but if you get rid of the meat, you only have unsubstantiated statements, in which case why watch the review at all?
Who expects a review to not have spoilers.
God damn. The IGN and Gamespot reviews were an ABSOLUTE trash waste of time. This is the only one I've seen that actually covers the damn game. Well done.
Yeah this is the review that convinced me to buy it, IGN and GameSpot really, are a joke.
This is my first fire emblem game and I am addicted. It’s so good
A note on the segment about frame rate: the game is just poorly optimized, it isn't hard on the system. I have a feeling a patch will fix some of this at some point
Calling it now, there will be a day 1 patch fixing it
@@WildPortraitArtist Or at least, a week afterwards. A game without much real-time activities plus the graphics style shouldn't make the game struggle to maintain consistent FPS anyway.
This will be my first fire emblem game. Hope i wont be disappointed :)
who cares
Welcome to the family
This is my 9th. I only have one tip: ignore the elitists and play how you want to play.
PrestigeCookie 2.0 Me too! Hope it isn’t too hard for me since I’m not used to tactical RPGs.
It looks good but i dont know if i will enjoy tactical rpgs
The Voice acting is beyond insane. Every Story Dialog, Every Support Talk, every Random Talk in the Monastary is voiced. Even Default NPCs have voices. And the Story, even tho it is still very basic in concept hits the mark too.
Very pleased to hear the game is doing really well! Fingers crossed for a Genealogy of the Holy War remake on the Switch! Glory to Grannvale!
Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Jugdral! Please! You don't know how much we need this!
@@yannickluecker3983 'Shadows' is going to get old very quickly. How about:
Fire Emblem Echoes: Elegy of Jugdral
followed by Fire Emblem Echoes: Embers of Elibe
I only played fire emblem awakening and Fates
@@theartoonnerdologist411 Genealogy of the Holy War was Japan only, but has a fan translation. It's also known to be the Fire Emblem with the best story of all and the first to feature romance and children (though it worked differently)
@@theartoonnerdologist411 You should give Shadows of Valentia a go, I really enjoyed it.
So excited to play this tomorrow! My special edition copy is set to arrive by noon tomorrow and I’m going to be sinking so many hours into this game!!!
SAME HERE!!!!
Same!!!
Switch Mania, Same bro I might be doing a play through on my twitch channel. On hard ;)
Same I can’t wait for the pins
Isn’t the special edition like $100. I think it’s crazy that it’s sold out everywhere when it’s so expensive
The only minor complaint I have about this game is that, on the Switch Lite at least, the text font is incredibly small. To an extent where my brother, who has rather poor eyesight, couldn't make out a lot of what was being said in text. He got most of it from voice overs, but things that were conveyed through text only were nearly unreadable for him, even with his glasses on.
I could personally play with it and make everything out, with a little struggle, but it's definitely hard on the eyes after a few hours. Since we are both Switch Lite owners, I have no idea how that compares to the other Switch consoles and it could be a console issue and not a game issue, but still, it couldn't have been that hard to make things a little more readable, could it?
We both still played the hell out of it and loved it, though. It just lost a little something because of that.

NOW THIS IS A REVIEW! I started watching the IGN review as a newcomer to the series and was very confused and put off to the game in the first two minutes. They started by discussing the changes to battles mechanics and showed a bunch of stats on screen which made the game look daunting. I was like, why am I not watching the Nintendo Life review? Thank you for actually making a good review.
I got my game a week ago, and I can’t stop playing it! I love tactical games that require a lot of planning not to mention attractive characters. Totally worth every penny!
came back after 1.5 years, this game is still one of my top 5 switch games
Fire Emblem: Hogwarts Edition
Hogwarts fire emblem edition
Harry Potter + Persona + Fire Emblem
This is my first FE game. Not a fan of Turn base strategy jrpgs but I love this one. Probably because I'm a persona fan and three houses have same elements. The music is awesome too and the story, though needs replaying it three times to see everything, it is pretty good.
You better believe i played as the female mc just so i could romance claude

Just listening to the explanations of everything you need to manage made my anxiety levels rise subconsciously
Me too, making me dislike it a bit honestly 😅
Glad I’m not the only one lol so on the fence on whether or not to get this game...did y’all end up playing it? Was it that bad?
@@monsieurcondottiero2685 I didn't but I may buy it soon, all of the reviews were positive and people seem to like it even a year later, so it can't be that stressful... right?
I wanna buy it but feels a bit expensive for me. Hoping there’s a sale soon😅
@@hassanhabeeb757 it was on sales for 41.99 a few months ago, hopefully it will be again soon
This game made me buy a Switch finally :) I'll enjoy it till Astral Chain drops. Thx for the great review
This is such an evolution for the series, I love how the story is complex and the bond between us and our units/students is deep and make permadeath matter so much. I love this!
I've just finished my first playthrough... I chose to follow the Golden Deer storyline and I wasn't disappointed. The characters were really well fleshed out with solid backstories and strong motivation for the way that they are. You can recruit classmates from other houses if you put in the effort into building your character to appeal to them and invite them to tea.
The control over how units level up and what skills they invest in was a great addition to the FE series, it allows a huge amount of customisation over your units, however I also found that the worry over whether or not you'd invested your limited time wisely each month was something I didn't enjoy. This is particularly worrying as some supports and opportunites to recruit can be missed.
Whilst the monastary offers quite a few different activities, (more with the DLC added) I found that by the end of the game these were getting very repetitive... With me spending all my activity points on meals with students to try and raise their support levels and max their motivation. It also became a chore dashing from one side of the monastery to the other just to hear every conversation in case I missed something important. Eventually the monastary sections just became busywork, even though they are the major thing that sets this fire emblem game apart.
I've so far loved my time with this game, the plot is engaging and the motivations for all of the characters I've recruited and used so far have really connected with me... I'm intrigued to see how the story plays from the perspective of the other houses, but don't relish the thought of all the grinding and busywork that may entail.
Nice review. This review is way better than other reviews such as no spoiler about time skips and others. Simple, short and clean! Nice work!
Did you just spoil time skips while praising a review with no spoilers?
Ign's review gave no sh#ts! I regret watching that review. 😓😓😓
I have seen other reviews that spoiled part of the game and I just scrolled to the bottom and looked at the score. They sure like to spoil things in reviews
Also THANK YOU for not putting too many cutscenes and post time skip footage into the review. IGN put sooo much in theirs and I hate it
Wait theres a time skip?! Thanks for the spoilers I guess...
@@fullmetalb5241 this has been part of the marketing and was shown off by Nintendo, doesn't count as a spoiler
@@benbodnar976 oh snap! My bad I didnt see that I was replying to the guy who determines what is and what's not a spoiler! Thanks for the clarification 😂
Bruh you can’t complain that information that’s been public for 2 months is a spoiler, especially in a review. Even then, it’s your fault for going into the comments where it’s fair game.
@@yaboichipsahoy2275 thank you for telling me what I am not allowed to do. I previously didnt know I wasn't allowed to do that. Please forgive me?
Don't forget about replayability due to the NG+ system regarding "renown", where instead of keeping all gear and stats, you keep this type of currency that allows you bonuses for most things of your choice, like weapons or character buffs. Also, after beating the game, you only explored one house... so try the other two houses for different scenarios and story revelations.
this game is a modern masterpiece in storytelling i’m sorry i don’t make the rules
I got into this game blind this year and this review is pretty much on point.
Overall its such a near perfect blend of elements that usually dont go well together. The exceptional great writing rounds this up as a must buy I can recommend to anyone without a doubt
I actually love the no weapon triangle thingy. Some are naturally better than other units when fighting a certain unit (magic kills armored knights insanely well, while little else damages them), but it allows for a different, more fair type of balance. There is a lower change an axe may hit certain units, but they can do insane damage. Archers can shoot far, and are harder to hit since they always space themselves. But their damage can either be insane on unarmed (and few at that) troops, or be mediocre to bad (mostly mediocre). It's a weapon system that kind of self-balances itself.
I enjoy the divine pulse. I mostly use it if I press a when I didn't intend to. It'll be something like specific placement or using wait accidently.
Best review for this game on the internet. Very well done!
I'm just under 50 hours in, first playthrough, Blue Lions, and loving this game, the intricacies, the storytelling... super glad I picked it up!
I feel like I might be too stupid for this game lol. I still want it though.
anthony savage You don’t need to be a genius to enjoy FE. It’s really all about figuring things out as you go on your very first play through in the series. You’ll slowly pick up on all of the systems and nuances. If you play on classic mode though, be warned that any characters that die in a battle will stay dead forever. So if that gives you anxiety, just play it on casual mode. They’ve made it very beginner accessible. Before you know it, you’ll be a strategic mastermind outmaneuvering and planning even the most fearsome of armies.
There are game modes that let you try again without any problems. Such as characters respwaning instead of dying and being able to undo actions so dw. Usually I play on super easy modes first play through so I can focus on the story then I turn on hard mode and use strategies second play through
Haha I feel the same way and I’ve played through a few Fire Emblem games.
Absolutely no shame in easy mode. :)
If you're worried play hard casual. I genuinely think normal is too easy so hard mode will absolutely challenge you to think about the consequences of your moves and you'll be punished for mistakes. You'll still need to consider that your Pegasus knight will be vulnerable to an archer if you send her forward to kill that mage after all.
But divine pulse and characters returning after death means for a newbie the punishment will feel more fair.
Then for your second playthrough you'll be well prepared for hard classic
@13:14 “every battalion is COMPROMISED of different soldiers...” 😮
Getting this game soon and have never played any Fire Emblems games before so Obviously I'll be playing on the normal difficulty but with the casual and classic which one should I choose for my first playthrough? Classic sounds cool but would anyone recommend for someone new?
The 'slowdown' in thr Academy isn't because of what is on screen is graphically taxing, but because it is loading in assets in the background for the area you are headed towards.
About to be my first fire emblem game! I’ve been thinking about picking up Echoes or Awakening for over a year now but my backlog has been crowded.
Seems like this Fire emblem three houses is scoring far better than those other two. I suggest picking this one up first 👍
Have fun! There is also a Fire Emblem mobile game called "Fire Emblem: Heroes" that kind of gives the basics of combat if you are interested. It uses characters from all the games in the series.
Never played this series before but very tempted with this!
Finally got into warframe on my switch and waiting for Ghostbusters and astral chain so this is really tempting me as well, well roll on city of sin and streets of rage, my switch is feeling loved again!
I'm so excited to get this game. This will be my first Fire Emblem game and all the praise it's getting makes me so happy to buy this game. The only thing I wonder is if this game is a great game for newcomers to the series to start with.
I’ve just been checking my Switch every few hours hoping they’ll let me play early😭🙏🏽 no luck tho #Golden🏆Deer🦌
Lol not long now
6 hours in! Only on chapter 3🙏🏽👌🏾
@@vulcanflash4228 I know I've been playing for hours still not that far but it's fun
Fear the deer!!!
I wonder if we’re going to get a Genealogy remake.
It makes the most sense right now; Shadow Dragon, Mystery, and Gaiden have all gotten remakes. Genealogy would be the most logical (along with the fact that many in Japan consider it the best game in the series) to remake next.
I don’t need to play this yet to realize this is gonna be my game of the year, actually this year has good games might be tough like sekiro and my entrance into trails of cold steel, but with the three routes and the fact they didn’t split it like with fates this could be the best fire emblem ever
I think the only thing I dislike so far is I can't change the size of the text, playing on the tv rather then handle mode can make it hard to read as the text style is very thin and small.
3:28 You are talking about Bernadetta!
What is the right house order to play?
This looks like a crossover of LoH: Trails of Cold Steel and Persona what sounds really amazing. I am not a switch owner but after watching this I am a step closer to buying one
Only 12 hours left... Can't wait for midnight to come, so I can finally start playing this game! I'm tired of seeing it in my library without being able to start it!
you are an awesome reviewer.
I have to pick this game up.
Happy to say I picked this up the other day and I haven't noticed any FR stuttering at all! It downloaded a chunky update before starting so looks like they patched it 👍🏼
Can we get that FE4 remake tho... or maybe old region locked FE’s on the virtual console??
this is my first fire emblem game ill most likely get, does this game resemble persona at all? sorta sounds like it
Only in the calendar system and that’s about it for comparisons
Not really tbh. There is a bit more of a social sim element than past games but it is very much an add-on side aspect to the main experience which are long, strategy battles that are kinda like chess with rpg elements
Was going to get the Switch for a main line Pokemon game, but I'm getting a little unsure about the new one. Got to wait and see for that one. Will probably get it for this though, since it looks pretty good. I'm mostly a new fan. I've only played Awakening and Fates, but really enjoyed them both. Thanks for helping me make the final decision :D
Um, 13:17 "...every battalion is compromised of..." Lol the word is comprised. Love the video though! A great review
Do i need to have played previous fire emblem games to know whats going on?
No different story feel free to jump in I am
@@rickycain9466 thx
So glad they brought back the “rewind moves” feature
This is a great review but can you please cut down on the ads a little bit they are getting really irritating when they randomly appear in the middle of a sentence
So is this game mostly combat or dialogue? It looks very dialogue heavy
Pretty damn dialogue heavy.... but thats if you choose to get invested in the story. You 100% can skip most of that and just opt to battle a bunch
@@jetfan88 are there enough battles? I loved Awakening and while its story was also enjoyable, I liked the battles a lot more. I heard three houses is mostly at school.
@@imadubsfan1 if you really want to. You don’t have to spend much time at the school as you can choose to battle and do paraloges instead
I dont think the Devs know how to properly set ram usage, so we get stuttering fps
Ah these type of games are far from my cup of tea (I’m more looking forward to Link’s Awakening) but I have to say I’m excited for everyone else! This game looks so well done with lots of love. My fiancé will love it! Leave it to Nintendo Life to write a review real gamers can appreciate.
This is going to be my first fire Emblem Game, can anyone tell me if it’s a good game to start on ?
I didn't understand the parmanent death system. So my students can die and I never see them again? Do I get new students? And can I turn off this feature? Thanks in advance for the help :)
In the 3DS title Fates, you get to choose one of 3 difficulty settings. The hardest one has permanent death, in the middle one defeated soldiers simply retreat, and come back into your party at the end of the battle. In the easiest one, defeated soldiers rejoin the fight after a few turns. I don't know if 3 Houses is exactly like that, but permanent death can definitely be turned off
@@connormccaffrey59 good to know I can turn it off :D alright, I am going to get it
Fire Emblem is known for permadeath. You get units over the course of the game but dead units stay dead. Added difficulty modes in later installments allowed units who fall in battle to just be out of commission until the next one.
Permadeath means that when a student/teacher/character dies, they’re gone forever. You don’t get a new student after another one dies. You can’t turn it off whenever you like, but you can choose between classic and casual. Casual allows for units to come back at the end of a battle after they die, and in classic, they’re gone forever. I’d suggest classic though, because in the game there is “divine pulse” which allows you to rewind a turn if a unit is killed.
As if my excitement for this game couldn't get any greater, this review has taken it to levels far greater than I could've imagined
Just wanted to commend the reviewer here. Great job. Can’t wait to play.
After the success of the 3ds games Nintendo announced that fire emblem will considered a primary asset and that it would receive the backing that other series like Zelda and Mario have enjoyed, and I can say three houses definitely feels like evidence that they spared no expense.
Is the casual mode actually casual, as in I, someone that's never played a Fire Emblem game, can navigate the combat enough to get to the story?
Casual mode is just no permadeath. Your fallen units come back for the next battle. If you're new, it can be nice to learn the mechanics of the game/series while still playing through the story and getting to know the characters more without being afraid to lose them because of a beginner's mistake/RNG screw/misunderstanding of a certain mechanic
@@zant2146 thanks

I think that's because it's the teachers uniform and those others are also teachers
@@abbykleimola3775 I mean the guy at 6:14 for example. I meant specifically Kiran.
TLDR: yes
If i could play only three games this year I would play this one three times.
I really can't believe I have logged 30 hours and I only just got the sword
I remember getting Fire Emblem for game boy advance and I thought it was the coolest thing ever.
This game is doing new things I’ve never seen before. Strategy on how you like to train by day is amazing!
why pick when you can play all 3 houses?
Japanese business work culture apparent in that weekend work schedule.
Working Saturdays here, too. *Sigh*
I have two questions!
1. How long is this game exactly? I've seen comments saying something like "bye 200+ hours of my life" before. Is it true? Is it longer then Persona 5? That'd be pretty cool (I very much prefer longer games that last more then a day or two. Persona 5 is the only one I've played that does this currently.)
2. Do I have to play/know the other games to understand this one?
There is three houses obviously from the game, each house takes about 40 hours to complete and longer to do everything. If you did do every house which has different stories then yes it’s pretty long. And no you do not need to have played previously games to play this one. Sort of like breath of the wild, you know the characters if you have played previously games but it’s not need to have tons of fun.
This is my first fire emblem, I’m doing just fine without playing any other games, I’m halfway through my 3rd house at 260 hours, but everyone plays differently, definitely get it if you haven’t
1. It depends on how you play. On average though I’d say about 60 hours per play through. If you just want to rush through the main campaign expect a shorter campaign and if you want to be thorough it’ll be even longer.
2. No you dont. Aside from the pre/sequels in the franchise (like FE3,FE10 and FE7) most fire emblem games are self contained with a different cast of characters. Three houses follows this rule. The only thing you’ll be missing are some FE4 references, nothing major at all
I'mma be late to the party but oooooh I can't wait to get my hands on this AAAAAHHHH
The only thing deterring me from making this a just grab is the time optimization. I never played p5 or anything like this unique gameplay aspect so I'm worried that I'll be poor at it and not be able to progress comfortably. Anyone else feeling this?
Its just a game, just enjoy:)
That was the best review of the game that i've seen yet, simply due to all the raw information that was given about the game in it. I dug that!
I don’t really play Strategy turn based Combat but I’m considering it. I love Fire Emblem as a franchise just like Persona. I’m considering trying both. Is this game worth trying to get into?? Im more into rpgs with action combat. Man this sucks…
I feel you bro, i keep reading how great this game is, and it also looks sick🥶 but i dont like turn based rpgs😂 give us arpg🙏🏽
Excellent review I already bought the game and enjoying this game
Such a great and in-depth review, good one!
Fire emblem fan here. I dont have a switch but when I heard they will release fire emblem on switch I decide to buy a switch. The question is... switch or switch lite?
switch all the way, here playing Fire Emblem on my TV, looks beautiful.
Looks like Stella Glow. I think I'm gonna pick this up.
What an amazing review, well done, love it!
I just don't know. It looks like a really confusing game and series in general. I've never played a Fire Emblem game. I've only seen their strangers in Smash since Melee. I've played a few strategy games like Civ/RTS's and I love Persona 5, but I'm not sure about this.
I’m not the biggest FE fan but I can try to help. Don’t look for Persona 5 in this game, while this game does have the most in terms of social aspects it still takes a backseat to the main gameplay focus which are big strategic battles. If you liked wars in Civ this game is basically fighting dudes like that except with a little bit more complexity with weapon types, crits and permadeath
I went to the gamestop and walmart in my town..its sold out
I see Nintendo change my📁game not pick blue and yellow team?
Should I play this if it is my first fire emblem
Yes
This is definitely one of the easiest to get into
Fantastic review. I will pick up the game because of this review. Very informative.
I didnt get special edition and it's only reason to preorder it. I'll play later on. I wish that there was some more editions and something really cool for preordering. The pins are neat but there needs more cool stuff with nintendos games for preorder incentives And more cool editions with nintendogs games here in us.
sounds cool but it doesn't sound to have an over arching plot right?
Not exactly. There is one story here, but it seen from 3 different perspectives with three different outcomes
NLife reviews are always top notch
