When Joan Laporta was elected as Barcelona president earlier in 2021 he made it his priority to renew Lionel Messiâs contract. Yet only a few days before his contract is due to expire no developments have come to life.
So Tifo asks, whatâs going on with Messi and Barcelona?

Why won't they give him stock in Barca?
The fact that making a Messi statue is used as an incentive is ridiculous, Messi deserves a statue no matter what
maybe change the academy name to La Messi'ah ?
@@HenSt-gz7qj Genius!
But don't let the same guy make the statue for Messi as he did for Ronaldo
Theyâre gonna make one either way, its just written in the contract to show they appreciate him
We deserve to witness his genius elsewhere. As for uprooting his kids and relocating his family, that is the real decider!
Feel like the offer of a statue is a bit silly given that he'll probably get one anyway. Played for Barcelona for over 15 years for most of which he's probably been the best player in the world, and won a crazy haul of trophies. If that's not a statue I'm not sure what a statue even means đ€·ââïž
maybe change the academy name to La Messi'ah XD
A statue is a carved or cast figure of a person or animal, life-size or larger. Looking out for you, mate đđŒ
It's a bigger deal than most think. Only 2 players have statues (and until recently only 1). The first was Kubala (who some old folks still insist was better than Messi). He's responsible for growing the fan base so much that they had to build camp nou (hence the statue).
The second is Johan Cruyff who had his erected after passing away. And we know what kind of impact he's had in the club.
So for non-socis it seems an empty gesture but it's actually huge
Some ppl thought that Messi would get one after espai Barça was built since his playing generated so much income that we wanted to update and rebuild the stadium but alas the last board was so bad that they never fully got the project started.
Hope this helps!
If he leaves barca, he'll get a statue by the same artist that did ronaldo's statue =)
@@thelongtrombone3528 plz. Messi is by far the best/most popular player in the history of the club. He could drive a bus through a crowd and still get a statue.
I can understand his frustration. The club was run to the ground by their old president, and any player will naturally want to win trophies and end his/her career on a high rather than stay at a team in transistion. I think after all of his services to Barcelona, he deserves to make that decision.
And heâll win trophies at Barcelona.

@@nishantnaik9543 yes if he hard carries your team in almost every match and brings 3 times more revenue than he earns đ
That story of the "3 times money than what he earns" is something an idiot called Marc Ciria said and everybody repeats without understanding. He attributes only to Messi the money earned for winning a game or title in which he participated in the goal creation. What does that mean? It means the other 10 players are not included in the equation and their contribution is âŹ0 as if this is not a sports team. Think about it, how does Pique, Busquets or Ter Stegen are not included or put into a different equation to determine their contribution. This is football, not boxing or tennis. The "genius" of Marc Ciria also said Barca should not pay the salaries of Coutinho and Griezmann to save money and let them sue the club. Suggesting something like this just shows how clueless and out of touch with football you really are, because there will be severe repercussions for the club.
@@edd0f what he means by that is when you think of Barca the first name that comes to mind is Messi, not pique not busquets nor Griezmann. Now tell me would you buy a Barca shirt, merchandise or even give a f*** if Messi is out, well not me. Not saying Pique or Busquets or the other players do not deserve merit and recognition but all the old players from their dominant times have gone out and retired and the new players underperforming, not integrating with the squad and riddled with injuries. We know Messi has been at the front and was their picture boy for over 15 years even during the times of Ronaldinho, Xavi, David Villa, Iniesta......so of course Barca is trying to hold on to that last existing reminder of the glory days and one that performs to that level to this day and still brings significant revenue to the club......
But i may be an idiot or out of touch with football, so take it with a pinch of salt....đ
@@edd0f more than 3 barca presidents have claimed that sponsorship contracts and ticket sales, two of the biggest contributors to Barca's revenue, are heavily contingent on messi. Rakuten has refused to renew their contract with barca for more than a year since there is uncertainty about messi. I get that you may not like Messi, but he's the most bankable star in football. He fills the most stadiums, sells the most shirts and gets the most money, simple as that.
La Liga will certainly let the FFP rules bend backwards to keep Messi. La Liga has been loosing top names on football to other leagues and Messi's departure is anything they would like.
It's not helping their case if Barcelona keeps bringing players while asking them to let Messi be registered. BTW, the new players at the moment, can't be registered until more players are sold to balance the books.

He should have one built already tbh
Iâm surprised that he doesnât have one I think Ronaldo (which ronaldo deserves a statue tbh )has one thatâs bizarre
Barca are rebuilding with free agents right now and are in a state of flux, with his retirement not too far away; Leo should force a move to win trophies and end his career on a high, he deserves it after all his service to the club.

Messiâs wage demands are so ridiculous that Barcelona would honestly be better off getting rid of him and using the money to get a few world class players and still they could have upwards of 50million a year freed up. Although Messi is of course the best player ever, the financial aspect and poor performance of the team in recent years cannot justify paying so much to one individual, the team cannot suffer due to exorbitant wages paid to ageing (although outstanding) players.
Bruh say that to Ronaldo and neymar
Can't say but think that he absolutely deserves every penny he earns at the club. But what the intermediate solution would be is to sell Coutinho, and all the deadweights that the club owns. Pjanic, Firpo, Roberto, Umititi, Braithwaite and possibly reduce the wage cut of Griezmann. That should do the books for the club.
The Messi brand is 50 percent (if not more) of Barcelona's revenues.
this is what happens when the player is bigger than the club. Laporta will still offer him a huge contract, but divided by 10 years. This means Messi will be retired and still receiving a paycheque from Barcelona for years that could be used for transfers. If Barca's fans say he deserves every penny, then so be it. R. Madrid will have the way clear to sign the next Haaland or next Mbappe.
@@czarmorte721 Bruh,What are you talking about?

Don't really get what they meant by "balancing out" the squad when Barca is still buying players at the wrong side of their 20's (or 30-ish)
You clearly have no idea what you're talking about. There's a big difference between spending 150 million on pjanic, vidal, and paulinho, and getting both aguero and depay for free transfers. Not to mention barca signed eric garcia and emerson this summer, both exciting youngsters, with players like pau torres and jose gaya being targeted. Laporta is also guaranteeing that either dembele or griezmann will leave this year, with braithwaite, pjanic, and hopefully coutinho also leaving as well. There's a clear shift in squad management under Laporta and you have to be completely blind not to see that.

Glad this happen. The increasing amount of money in footballers wages have to hit a ceiling at one point. 100k pound per week used to be only for the very elite players/best of their generation, but now that's normal for squad players at big clubs, with regular starters at these clubs getting 200k-300k (per week !!!). Messi/CR7 rumored wages of >500k per week do dwarf these numbers, but they arguably can be considered as exception considering their unbelievable achievements. They should be treated as outlier rather than benchmark.
The other side of the argument is that footballers bring in the money. Money in football has blown up so, If the money doesnât go to them it will simply go towards owners. Under sensible management this isnât a problem. Since there will be a budget in place.
Erling Haaland doesn't agree
maybe there should be a wage cap rule, and the rest can be given as bonuses.
@@ronanoconnor-prow6525 Sensible management is what Florentino Perez is doing and telling their stars who think they are bigger than the club and want to hold the club to ransom to earn more money, the door is right there. At Barcelona, they increased wages and extended contracts to everybody while saying "we generate more revenue than everyone else in Europe" and then when a pandemic hits and the money is not coming, those wages are a huge burden no longer sustainable. If the fans understand this, they would not say "give him what he wants"
Imagine Messi and Ronaldo both went to PSG. Expensive for the Qataris but would certainly turn a lot of global headsđ
He earned âŹ555m for 4 years, His wages are so high that he will have to take a 90% cut to earn double of Aguero. Think it's actually better for him to leave, for both parties. Bartomeu didn't want to be the president who let Messi go, but everyone will remember it was him who was so corrupt and greedy that he decimated comfortably one of the biggest clubs in the world to the ground

Messi is already a multi millionaire many times over, plus is already a club legend at Barca. If I was Messi, I'd help the club by taking a pay cut for my twilight years and finish my career at Barca.
Iâm sure he thought about it but I think the deal they propose was not good at all. The issue with the FC Barcelone must be inefficient management and somehow, Messi should not pay for this since he is already contributing for 1/3 of Barcelona revenue. They have to restructure their management team!

There's one other factor - the European Super League. Despite being called off, Bacelona - along with Real Madrid and Juventus, have yet to officially withdraw the project. And UEFA has already announced plans for strict measures against all 12 clubs that announced their involvement in the project, but the most sever punishment UEFA is saving for those who are yet to withdraw - Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus. And those punishement could mean either transfer embargoes or even disqualifiction from UEFA-sanctioned tournaments such as the Champions League.
