It's worth checking out the Sega/Mega CD version of this just to hear the title screen music in all its cheesy glory.
You speak the true true
Ah, so THAT version is the one that had the intro song? I thought for a minute that they paid for voice clips... for a SNES game like this.
The intro for the Snes and Genesis are terrible, but the Sega CD one is actually kind of okay IMP. It sounds like something from a Saturday Morning Cartoon.
Oh, wow.
I remember renting this so much when I was little so much when the game store went out of business I bought it. I think I have nostalgia with this one but this and prehistoric man were my favorite Dino games of the snes. Been waiting years for you to cover this and you didn’t disappoint
Your comment about imagining all your homework was game related just to power through is exactly what I do with work. I mostly play video game related music in the background when I’m working to give me the grinding vibe. It really works!
When you mentioned how you go inside a Dinosaur and some levels are bouncy I thought "So it's not only a poor man's Sonic, but a poor man's Bonk's Adventure too!" I mean, if you want to see the fire ability as like the fireballs from Mario it's all the 16 bit main mascots thrown into a blender but with zero effort to make it fun.
It’s not fun. It’s radical
A poor man's Amiga game, too.
Ren and Stimpy did this too, if I remember correctly.
It's a poor man's Mr. Slave Colon.
Joe and Mac
the 90s the era when all game companies tried to create a mascot for their studio.
You can thank Sonic for that.
@@BoleDaPole Don't you mean Mario?
@@goatboneario accidentally became Nintendo's mascot because his game was so popular. Sonic was created with the intended purpose of being one because Alex Kidd never caught on in the US.
@@goatbone Mario was just kind of there. He started off in Donkey Kong, which had sequels, then refereed Tennis, and so on. He was never particularly cool. I mean, he's a plumber. Sonic, however had *attitude* ! He was the original Poochie. In your face, radical, dreadlocks, the whole deal.
@@goatbone Like the others have said are true, but Mario definitely added to it. Everyone wanted their own mascot, just Sonic was specifically made for that with that 90s tude, something Mario was missing.
The sprites in this actually look really good.
Before you even mentioned Shadowrun, I was thinking that the bass sounded darn familiar but that explains it!
Yeah same composer, Marshall Parker.
Getting a notification that you've put out another video always makes my day that much better. Thanks for all you do!
Fun fact, this game is available now in Switch, PS4 and Steam.
I mean sure, true classics like Plok, Terranigma and Rocket Knight Adventures have never been rereleased even once, but we have Radical Rex!
Lmao thanks for the reminder that we live in a strange and sad world
I cant speak for Plok, but both of those other games are owned by companies that would rather hold on to them forever even if the opportunity to capitalize on their sales never arrived.
@@bigduke5902 Not even the Pickford Bros. knows who owns the right to Plok. They own the characters, but not the game itself, and they are busy on a webcomic and not want to bother trying to get the rights to the game back.
@@NateRD90 Oh. Hmm. I was told that the Pickford brothers do own Plok.
@@bigduke5902 I mean Konami did try that reboot with Rocket Knight on the 7th gen consoles, which was so bad I think it killed any likelihood for the character coming back.
Man the early 90s. Always seem to make Dinosaurs cool especially the T-rex from Jurassic Park to Barney. I guess you can say the early 90s was the years of the Dinosaurs.
Denver, the Last Dinosaur 🦕
NOT THE MAMA 🍳
I just want to say again how much I enjoy your channel and your sense of humor.
The weird part of radical rex is that instead of having 2 act levels with the 2nd having the boss. They go through all the act ones. And then at the halfway point you go backwards through the games levels but with the boss levels. Not like a boss rush but like it was originally going to have 2 act levels but they wanted a gimmick
Baby T-Rex was reskinned in a number of countries. In Australia, it was Agro Soar.
Wait, as in Agro from Cartoon connection?
I knew he got a few games, never knew of this one though.
Yep. Very expensive game to buy nowadays.
It became We're Back! in the States. Explains why a tie-in to a forgotten movie was so good.
The original Game Boy game that Radical Rex was based on got a reskinned version in Sweden as the children's book/comic book character Bamse
I remember that I rented this game solely due to its front cover.
Not a bad game, but not a full price game either.
Yeah same! Back when the cover and box was everything
The correct answer to this could have just been "no" and that would have sufficed but I'm glad to see you had things to say about it!
The one thing I remember about this game is its villain being a wizard that speaks in rhyme.
I want SNES Drunk to do an entire episode entirely in his radical voice. It would get annoying fast, sure, but he needs to do it for the vine.
I don't think my throat could handle it, dude
@@SNESdrunk Channel your inner Michelangelo! Be totally gnarly, dude! Cowabunga!!
@@SNESdrunk you don’t know what your throat can handle until you try 么么哒
@@SNESdrunk do it for the 90’s kids all around the world… thirty years ago
@@SNESdrunk Well not in one take, obviously.
Poochie the dog never gets old
I had it as a kid, and with a bit of rose-colored glasses on, i can say that despite the gameplay being very challenging at times, (for the wrong reasons), the presentation and music are very charming, and worth checking out nowadays.
It really does feel like a horrible alchemy experiment with joe and mac, adventure island, and sonic and when it's all said and done it replied back, Edward friend.
@SNESdrunk Joe and Mac, Three Vikings, this one. There is something soooo 90s about this look and "Thing". We were very into Dinosaurs and this whole "Tropical vibe". It's probably due to the cultural impact of Jurassic Park. I can't remember right now but you have done a video(s) on the Jurassic Park games too? Probably multiple. But I have an idea somewhere in there. It was a big thing in the 90s.
Beam Software didn't port Shadowrun, they developed it. The SNES version wasn't realeased on any other system.
Holmes, you've done it again. You've cracked the case.
@@Archedgar Go home Watson. You're drunk.
The fish deflating thing was also in ToeJam & Earl: Panic on Funkatron
Was so happy when you did the totally radical voice right from the jump
Love the totally tubular 90s dude! So over the top with everything haha
This is one of those games I rented as a kid and then one day had weird memories of that made me question this games existence.
"Did I play a game as a kid with a skateboarding dinosaurs? No, I couldn't have..."
Also Toe Jam and Earl Panic on Funkatron is another game where you can make out with fish to steal their oxygen.
I read that as Radical Sex first and went WHAT????
Your 90's voice reminded me of those fever dream Slim Jim comericals. What an era. Good times.
That theme song in the intro really sounds like Radical Rex should have also been an animated series for back in the day.
You mean I could listen to a CD quality version of that TOTALLY RADICAL intro while I play? Thanks, Sega!
Ah, the 90s. It was the best of times, it was the blurst of times.
I should BOO-urns that joke you made ;;)
Your "Radical Rex" voice is spot on. I thought you were Otto Mann from The Simpsons for a sec there.
This reminds me of a very old Game Sack episode where they talked about RAD GAMES!!!11!!!11!!
Judging by its visuals, with more frames of animation and a "difficult but (un)fair" gameplay, it could very well be a modern indie game.
TUDE SACK !
@@Gatorade69 yes! That one!!
JUUUUUNGLLLLLLLEEE CHHHIIIIIIIIIIIIP
Make out with fish, to get oxygen
Next tik tok challenge for the kids lol
New Vid! Yes! So early!
When I was in my early 20s a friend of mine had one of those late 80s early 90s style skateboards that literally had "Rad Rex" on it.
Now I know where tf that came from.
The funny thing is, all of that "radical" stuff was only the corporations. Most kids I know had long sinced moved on from "Radical!" Since a little band from Seattle threw a pep rally in a music video.
Yeah, was gonna say, all that SoCal Surfer Dude crap was dead and decomposed by ‘92 at the latest, cool apathy giving way to even cooler nihilism was where it was at in ‘94.
I was so happy with it as a kid, I love Trex, I was a 90s kid, and skateboarding. Would rent it relentlessly. Never got pass level 2.
Just a bit of a correction about Beam Software's Shadowrun that you mentioned at the beginning of the video - that wasn't actually a port. That was a completely original game developed from the ground up and was an exclusive for the SNES.
Great game.
Yooo I was the same! I also wrote short stories and all sorts of other school work as a kid about games! Street Fighter II got a full creative story from me! My teacher seemed to have no clue about the series, so I was ready to tell all about it hahaha
Grew up in the 90s, can confirm we were all radical.
Hahahaha you’re so not wrong! That song is a perfect example of the 90’s!!
Hahaha, he really struggled with this one 😂😂
I played this on sega CD it was a pretty fun game
The music sounds so uncannily similar to SNES Shadowrun's that I'm beginning to hallucinate a total conversion romhack of Shadowrun with gritty cyberpunk dinosaurs
The fish kissing immediately made me think of Toejam and Earl: Panic on Funkotron, which if you haven't played or reviewed, ya should @snesdrunk
Man i remember this game being advertised in disney adventures for MONTHS lol it had a kid in a bomber jacket with sunglasses laying on his side against a giant version of the box. lol
I was TOTALLY thinking Poochie the dog before you even said it!
When he said "skateboard" and "adventure island"
He meant wonderboy....
FIGHT!!!
Didn’t Hudson actually get to make there own IP out of Wonderboy? I don’t believe it was a ripoff, they actually had a sort of permission from Sega.
Adding this to my collection for the kids in the fam and for my momz. Gonna do the Radical Rex dance w/ the kids 😁Thanks man!
Now I wants some dunkaroos.
God damn it. I don't think they exist anymore.
A great vid, and a Yakov Smirnoff reference? You da man! Thanks!
He's so radical, he has four fingers on each hand instead of two. Now that's radical.
0:23 banger alert
Oh yeah! It's time to whip out the Gak and my Pogs! And a hacky sack for good measure.
Sounds about right. I recall problems with skateboard buy maybe i just forgot.
Memory says i got yhrough the gane once and then never picked it back up
Good review! I played the Genesis version years ago and the best thing I can say about it is it isn't as bad as Bubsy. It is a fairly bland game and the skateboard controls are indeed atrocious.
There were way too many bland and forgettable '90s mascot platformers. I mean, does anyone remember Awesome Possum Kicks Dr. Machino's Butt? You shouldn't.
most adhd phrase ever "hey if you ignored my rambling and are just watching" good looking that is exclusively
Wait, did you add the Tag Team of Dunk a Roos AND Lisa Frank to your 90’s voiced game title??
Well played sir!
You should try "Metal Warriors" its a very good snes game even has a story and good animated cut scenes
A Yakoff Smirnov reference? Didn't think I'd hear that today
0:10 Dude, you sound just like Otto from The Simpsons.
I completely forgot about this game. Blockbuster, Bigfoot Pizza from Pizza Hut and no choice but this game. Needless to say I just played it for a second and then went to watch the movie we rented.
This looks like an awesome game to speed run 👀
Only three runs on the leaderboard!
👀 Other than the skateboard inconsistently working when going down slopes, it is a really fun speedrun!
There's one thing all the games better than this don't have, a real cool Radical Rex.
Hearing that bass in the music, I can immediately tell they worked on Shadowrun.
Beam Software also made one of my favs, the MechWarrior game
Is it just me or does Radical Rex look like he has sadness in his eyes? Like he’s on the verge of tears.
Ah yes I was an older kid in the 90’s everything was radical and extreme!!!!!
I completed this game several years ago. It gets so freaking hard.
No, this didn't "pass for entertainment" back in late 1994. It was "cringe" before cringe was a thing to most preteens and teens. I mean, think about it: Poochie the Dog was a parody of the early 90s... done in 1997. By then we were already so done with "radical surfer dude" stuff that it became a meme. We acknowledged stuff like Spuds MacKenzie, while fun at the time, were early-90s marketing mistakes. A very short-lived fad. But parents can't keep up with this stuff. I'm guessing Beam Software and Activision were hoping dumb parents would see "Radical" on the cover and think, "Looks like a kid-friendly title to get the kids for Christmas--And maybe my kids will finally think I'm cool!" The sad thing is, it probably worked.
Yup. 1994 was the year Final Fantasy III (yeah, you heard me) came out.
that title song...my freakin ears! Was Radical Rex SNES' answer to blast-processing Sonic? 😂 when ytou name the games better thasn this, reminds me of the episode of the simpsons when homer names all the jobs he's had
this game was pretty sick as a rental tbh, but it'd feel bad if it was your birthday present
Ah, the curse of the 90s "mascot with attitude". Sonic has a lot to answer for.
Snesdrunk bringing out his writing skills on this one
"In conclusion, Radical Rex is a game of contrasts."
That was hilarious!
When I was a stupid young kid, I used to love this but thought it was too difficult.
With that tubular box art? Of course it's worth playing today!
1:11 had to do a to check... it's a tail 😅
Lmao
The game would be elevated if it had a Jackson King V in it as seen at 0:13
Also, I'd like to thank HHH for providing the voice of 90s Guy.
I reaaaaaaally don't care about this game but every time i come across with any of your video i find it interesting you are making a really really important job of gaming archive thank you!!! This channel is awesome and i love your music playlist.
It would be totally rad if snesdrunk did an entire vid as "outrageous 90s dude" 😎
Did this game come out after or before Segas toejam and earl panic on funkatron? Abuse kissing the fish happened there too.
Pretty impressive voice work for '94 on an SNES!
I'm impressed they had a fully vocal opening theme song on an SNES cart, but it feels like all the effort into cramming that memory into those chips should have went into making the controls tighter. That sounds like the biggest problem, and while the presentation is good, bad controls automatically cancel that out.
You're young then. Quite a few SNES games had elaborate voice samples. The AVGN just hasn't reviewed them.
@@bigduke5902 Yes, a lot of them did, and it's still very impressive for the games that had them on the hardware at the time. Still took up a crapload of memory and push the system to its limits. It's still wasted on a game which isn't playable is my point. And that's a shame. I don't think it would rise beyond Euro-platformer type game play (even if it was made on another continent), but it could at least be a fun Euro-style game.
"Organic Poochy in the Wild!"
I was about 6-7 when this came out so I was probably the target demographic, and I sure did love this game despite its flaws. The level design was bad and too punishing, but the graphics and game mechanics were awesome. Especially for an NES game, back then this was visually stunning and most platformer games did not have two different special moves or a skateboard.
3:50
huh, well now I know where Mother 3 got that from
the intro feel they where begging for it to be adapted in to a tv show
Oh man. That's a trip. I totally forgot this existed, and I owned it.
The music is a bear total rip off of Shadowrun. Lol. Keeping in mind I love it, now I gotta play it!
Same composer, Marshall Parker.
This games looks worthy of the romhacking community to spend time fixing the controls to make it playable.
When I was 4 or 5 I remember wanting this game SO bad 😂
damn you had a lot of fun writing the script lol
Radical Rex is Denver the Last Dinosaur’s 🦕 inner city cousin.
God it unnerves me when player sprites look at the camera during normal gameplay. See also: Back to the Future Part 2 on the SNES.
I totally fell for this at age six picking it over dreamland 3
This game was published by Activision (North America), Rex rides a skateboard... "Radical Rex's Pro Skater".
Love radical 90s dude voice!!!
I actually have an entire miniessay to write here! About something related to this, that I noticed recently.
So I was born in 1979. That means that I became an adolescent and started noticing serious things just as the fashions changed towards the more serious, and grunge and alternative displaced the "Rad" fashions of the late 80s and early 90s. So in a few years, I had gone from hanging out in the mall playing video games to wanting to hang out at used record stores and alternative book shops, etc. But until recently, I thought that it wasn't just me, that the world had changed and that "Rad" (colorful and actionpacked, edgy but mainstream) pretty much died by 1992. So things like this make me wonder: was that mostly just me? Did "Rad" continue into the 1990s, and I just didn't notice?
