8 bit to 16 bit is still one of the absolute biggest jumps in gaming visuals for me. Just... look at these beautiful games.
For me it's surpassed by the jump from 16 bit to 64 bit with the N64. Seeing Mario in full 3D and walking out into Hyrule Field for the first time are formative gaming experiences, which I wish I could experience again. Simply unreal
@@alddominatinMCand now you look back and they look very ugly
You should have included Chrono Trigger. 😊
The original Mario kart still has my favorite battle mode out of all of them. The arenas were just the right size.
Love going back to play it.
The only game ALL my friends loved, even the ones that weren't into videogames, in terms of fun the #1 in snes. I still play it to this day
64 tho
Still love Killer Instinct today. My grandma took me in a taxi to go get it at Best Buy. It appeared they were sold out and grandma was like we're leaving now. On the way to leave there was one copy left sticking out ,out of place ,in the music aisle. I was so happy and relieved. Great memories. Thx abuela. Miss ya. See you again in Heaven one day.
Lol some kid probably stashed that
@@mikeb1596 probably or his dad said no just before they left
Awww.
My family was blown away by the graphics in Killer Instinct. A true gem.
Dragon Ball Z: Hyper Dimension sprites were an absolute mainstay on early 2000s anime and gaming forums. So clean, so dynamic.
I knew pretty much all of those titles EXCEPT for Winter Gold and let me tell ya, that thing looks amazing, giving me some early 3D Sega arcade game vibes.
Also, the SNES port of doom was my introduction to that FPS series and it scared the life out of me when I was a kid lol
Glad you found something new!
In my opinion, DK3 has the best SNES graphic. Having released it in 1996/7 at the end of SNES lifespan, it was truly a swan song. Some people might say DKC2 is better than DKC3 in gameplay, but graphic-wise, DKC absolutely more impressive. I can't forget by the time I reach K3, and Rockface Rumble music hits the first area, I was amazed how good the graphic complements the gameplay.
Later I realized the background is similar to Chief Thunder's stage in Killer Instinct. No surprise there because both games made by Rare.
Trial of mana the best super famicom
Definitely depends if you're on a CRT and original hardware or playing it on a modern device/monitor. That's true of almost all the digitized/rendered graphics games of this era. The Mortal Kombat games look good even on GameGear if you play on original device. They look pretty bad on a high res display. NBA Jam is so much more about the gameplay than graphics but it looks so much better in a real crt arcade cab than emulated on modern console or PC.
@@caseyhayes4590: just use a CRT shader and a hi-res monitor (>1440p recommended)
bro has no idea that doom was on SNES 💀💀💀
Maybe, but i hate the art direction in DK3, a massive step back compared to the first two gorgeous titles.
Terranigma is a really underappreciated gem in the SNES library, sad that it only released in Europe outside of Japan and never had a remake or rerelease, not even on Virtual Console.
Just a correction about that game, it was made by Enix, not Square. They still weren't merged at the time.
It got released in PAL territories. that means, Australia as well
Australian here, so glad to have experienced this gem back when it released
@@Kepec85
Still holding out for a Quintet Trilogy like they've been doing for other old collections.
@@pyrotictiger9930 Problem with that is that Qunitet went out of business under the strangest circumstances ever, one day the CEO just disappeared and the legacy of the rights to their library is very unclear to this very day.
So, we'll probably not seeing it for a very long time.
Actraiser 2 was the most beautiful game I ever played on the SNES. Super Turrican 2 was also extremely impressive
"Black Winter Night Sky" from Tekken 2 for your Channel intro? I absolutely love this song
Bahamut Lagoon never gets talked about. Shallow game, sure, but looks amazing.
Lovely 😍 SNES is my favorite ever.
If I could add to the list I would put lock on, Star Ocean, Tengai Makyou Zero
Good choice!
I'm glad that I have both the super Nintendo and the super famicon
Love hearing this guys voice before I go to sleep..i enjoy this chanel so much.
Glad you enjoy it!
the amount of games ive never played as a kid is astounding. damn there are some beautiful games out there
Donkey kong country 1 2 and 3 were jaw dropping, great video
I'll second that. Blew my mind as a kid!
Killer Instinct vs Mortal Kombat could have been an awesome mashup
Would have loved to have seen that!
@@thatvideogamesshow I believe I said that many years ago myself. Instead we got MK vs DC...
Winter Gold was one of my fabourite games back in the day. The menu music is amazing.
Randy Linden's work on SNES Doom is nothing short of sorcery.
I’ll second that!
I actually got DBZ HD imported back in the 90s. Loved it!
Nice!
I was always impressed by a late SNES game I bought, Metal warriors. The cut scenes were amazing at the time. They really brought you in to the story which had some very epic battle grounds. Give it a try if you haven't. Thanks for the great video
Another rad video! Also yay for Sea of Stars music!
Good catch! Thanks for watching =)
Great video, but might I add, Terranigma was the fifth game in a quintology. We Quintet Fanboys include Actraiser 1 & 2 in there, mainly for the similarities in the graphical presentation and similar tone in story-telling. None of these games are actually connected, they basically all run on the same engine and hit similar story beats, which made people come up with all kinds of theories, how these games are connected. They are not, except for a few cheeky callbacks by the devs
Thanks for the correction!
The Granstream Saga on PS1 is probably more connected to Terranigma than Actraiser though
No we don't. Granstream saga is the fourth
Maybe it's a german thing, a big CZcamsr here reffered to the SNES games as the "Quintet Quintette", meaning all 5 SNES entries, as in Actraiser 1 and 2, Illusion of Gaia (Time), Soul Blazer and Terranigma, Granstream Saga went largely unnoticed here, I even forgot about it, when writing my first comment.@@danielhayes3607
It's debatable that Donkey Kong Country 3 has the best overall graphics on the SNES. I honestly forgot how pitch perfect the graphics for it look and my jaw completely dropped. Holy shit.
You made 2 videos & no word of *Jurassic Park* ?! its the one game that really blew me away back then for being just great! & my first first-person shooter, when you walked inside a building!
other then that, ofc *F-Zero & Zelda:Link to the past* where just gorgeous & fun overall! and lets not forget *Pilot Wings* and SuperStreetFighter2 Turbo !
1994-1996 had the largest leaps in graphic fidelity in SNES titles since 1990 release, the advent of additional DSP/SuperFX1/2 co-processors in the cartridges gave the SNES an additional boost in capability, and closed the gap at the time to Neo-Geo.
17:29 "Keep an eye for Part 2" Wait... ^^
Anyway cool video, it gave me ideas of what to play next :)
😅 that’ll teach me to double check!
The one thing I will always remember from KI is "C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER" As that was the one thing you had to learn to perfection. If you didn't know to break out of combos, you were as good as dead in that game, as the combos system was insane and all that the pros were doing is rushing from one combo to the next one the moment they figure out that you cannot break out of them.
Garl's theme from Sea of Stars was a nice touch for Terranigma :)
You can talk about pre-rendering and Mode 7 all you want, but Mega Man and Bass was a Saturn/PS1 game shoved into the SNES which is already proof of the system's power
I remember Cybernator (KONAMI) having an amazing detailed graphics for levels and enemies. I was amazed as a Child (and still got chills with the OST).
Other honorable mentions to me are:
- EarthWorm Jim
- Street Fighter Alpha 2
- Demon Crest
- Marvel War of the Gems
So much love for the SNES
I never played that game, but I always remember it cause it got all 5s in gamepro! I was like wow!
Terranigma is an *EXCELLENT* Choice! 👌
Another fantastic video, with sublime picks! Killer Instinct and Doom were such a jaw-dropping visual experiences for the SNES, and really showcased the prowess of the console itself. Terranigma looks awesome, and one that I need to try out!
Terranigma is fantastic, I played it myself thanks to emulation. It's quite an experience. Shame it never got released in North America, and hasn't even seen a re-release anywhere.
Sega fanboys love to bring out that the Snes games used special chips, but in my opinion, the console was designed with that in mind, so it's a sign of a more well thought machine, not the contrary. Even without the cartridges chips though, Snes still beats the Genesis, look at games like Mortal Kombat 2 and 3, how they look a lot better than Genesis version.
NGL Megaman and Bass is one of my all time favorite Megaman games.
Such a great platformer!
I stumbled over Hagane in the nineties just by chance. A friend of mine accepted to exchange his SNES with my humble GameBoy. I was BLOWN AWAY. I replayed it recently through emulation but I must admit that, besides the beautiful graphic, it is one of the toughest games I ever played. Almost impossible to finish.
Tales of Phantasia is an impressive graphical game from the Snes
11:18 Damn I can feel that on my skin. The visuals are awesome, but the audio really knocks it even further out of the park there
Great video, good selection of classics and deep cuts!
Thanks Robin!
When they mentioned hyper dimension I 1st thought of tmnt tournament fighters or so alpha.Though I'm great full they gave old school dbz it's flowers.
Would it kill you to credit the music? I've driven myself up the wall trying to remember where the intro music came from (the Tekken 2 intro, if anyone is wondering)
8:43 You sir have great taste in music! I have not yet played Sea of Stars myself, but when I first heard this track I had it blasting on repeat for a good couple of hours in my headphones
Haha thank you!
Sea of Stars is awesome! A true homage to pixel based games
Love these. Hope you can keep them coming!
More to come!
Wow. Awesome video. I had no idea how visually impressive Winter Gold is. Thanks for making these
More on the way!
@@thatvideogamesshow you are a badass
Great video! I want to add a jewel named Super Turrican, also Yoshi's Island and Tin Star.
Fully agree on all 3! I was gonna chime in with Yoshi and Turrican myself!
Thanks for the video!
You're welcome!
Wow, Winter Gold looks amazing, the framerate is also smooth too. How the hell did they pull this off? Even with the FX2, I wasn't expecting this.
Such an impressive game for its time!
What you are seeing is "just" a vector animation, not a real 3D scene. A bit like playing fmv, but generated in realtime and much more storage friendly. The video alludes to this by mentioning the different animation segments which could be stitched together to create different tracks. Look up the Amiga demo "State of the Art" by the group Spaceballs to see the effect in its infancy. Members of the group later joined Funcom and developed this game.
The intros for "Another World" and Flashback are other examples of this technique, or check out the more recent Amiga demo "Eon".
Surprised Tales of Phantasia isn't on this list, really amazing game.
DKC3 nailed the world theming and tying it into each new area you enter.
Mega Man & Bass I enjoyed, though i only played the GBA version. DBZ Hyper Dimension was also fun! I liked how health worked. I plan to get a copy of the game for myself, as I only played it on emulator. I've played a little of Terrangima and I remember liking it. Slightly off-topic, but I like the song you picked for the Terranigma section. What's it from? DKC3 is the only one of the trilogy that I didn't play as a kid, so I don't have a lot of memories or even time playing it, though I did get it for my collection some time ago. Love me some Donkey Kong!
Missing Super Double Dragon, Prince of Persia, The Legend Of The Mystical Ninja, TMNT IV Turtles In Time, Metal Warriors, Actraiser, Castlevania: Dracula X, etc.
Doom differences on snes - 7 stages and the bonus level for each of the 3 episodes compared to 8 and 1 bonus level (levels in game are 1:1 in design with other versions tho not all the shortcut paths are present like the button on the side of the stairs in first stage of episode 1 was removed), episodes were locked behind the diffculty selected even if you beat the episode to move onto the next, diffculty was actually one lower by one compared to other versions - nightmare on snes was actually ultra violent on other versions. As for the remove stages, I remember central processing e1m6 and containment area e2m2 were missing on snes but not sure what the episode 3 one was.
That Sea of Stars audio at 8:42 though
The sandstorm effect layer in the zombie town Louran, in Terranigma has an interesting alpha blending trick.
Auwww man. You played budokai music...
Now I gotta blitz through the game again
That Sea of Stars music, we hear you 😁
Hell yeah the messenger soundtrack. One of the best retro-style OSTs of all time!
Are you going to talk about Cybernator or Assault Suits Valken ?
This game was huge !
And don't forget about Street Fighter Alpha 2 - That game make a impressive use of the decompression chip, and almost port 1 to 1 de Arcade version of the game.
Included in part 1 🙂
@@thatvideogamesshow ohhh my mistake! Don't see the part 1. Going now - Thanks for this content!
3:39 this game was actually measured at 16,000 Killer-Bits (KB). To those that don't know that's almost double the customary 9000
Hey TVGS,
what game is this intro Music tune from you use here?
Treasure Hunter G is pretty neat as well
Never heard of that one, I'll have to check it out!
@@thatvideogamesshowit's a japan exclusive, but it has fan translated versions
Fantastic content
Thank you!
i just learned about hagane. only played the first level so far but it's interesting. also learned about ninja warriors. i saw a video about it on facebook. it looked more like a playstation game. again, played first level, definetly gonna play more
KI was indeed mind blowing for the time...same with DOOM...my cousin got them along with another SNES technical showpiece...SF ALPHA 2 xD
I actually enjoy the challenge of playing Doom on the SNES. The video footage showed some good examples of how your movement is different in that you do more left-right strafing than circle strafing.
Mega Man and Bass looks like a PS1 game cause it kind of is. Most of the graphics and sprites were borrowed from Mega Man 8 on the PS1/Saturn. Which makes it all the more impressive.
some games i never have even heard of here!
Lots of good info here, but I found it odd that your script wasn't synced up with the footage. It'd be nice if when you were talking about a game's bosses, you showed video of the games bosses and not just B roll lol
Whats the intro track at the beginning of the video? It sounded like something out of the pool/billiards game Side Pocket.
Holy cow, Winter Gold is the best 3D effect I've ever seen from the FX-chip games. That legit still looks good! Never even heard of that one, what a cool choice.
Also Sabrewulf main 4 life 😎
Such an impressive game for its time!
Besides, try looking for the intro in Winter Gold. It's a dancing girl with great effects!!
You forgot Jurassic Park in 3D mode, 3X3 eyes, Batman Returns and Pilot wings
The crazy thing about DKC3 is that I've been playing the Japanese version of DKL3 on the GBC and there is so much that's the same, it's crazy. If you think DKC3 was impressive for the SNES hardware, DKL3 made the GBC almost look like a GBA.
Too bad the GBC version of Donkey kong Land 3 was Japan-exclusive, U.S. only got an OG Gameboy Donkey kong land 3 in english.
@@wizkaqueefa9003 yes, that's why I imported the Japanese version. It makes a world of difference. And the animations are incredibly smooth, the music is insane. Honestly, probably my favorite DK game. The controls are so good.
Tekken 2 Intro Music.. Nina Williams... ;)
Gracias ❤
Nice to see u having over 100K views per video. Subscribed when u were below 10K on average.
Just here to say I'm really surprised you haven't included Stunt Race FX yet. And I've never played Terranigma, but from the footage, I would have put Spike McFang or Secret of Evermore first. But that's probably just down to art style preference. Also Earthworm Jim had some of the smoothest animation ever on the SNES.
End of SNES lineup was the best graphics of 2D games
Which SNES game would you say has the best graphics?
DCK 3, or Super Turrican.
Cho aniki
Demon's Crest, Renderung Ranger R2, Front Mission Gun Hazard, Turn N Burn No-Fly Zone, Ghost Sweeper Mikami, Bastard!! Ankoku No Hakai-shin, Axelay...there are so much awesome titles for this system.
Final Fantasy 3/6
Chrono Trigger
11:33. That creature looks like the same one from Star Wars Phantom Menace
I love dkc3. I know people don't like it compared to 2 but I thought 3 was just as fun!
It seems that you are simply upscaling your emulator recordings to 1080p? Keep in mind that TVs of the era were displaying their screen (which was slightly covered by the bezel to protect the tube (the area being covered called the overscan)) - in the 4:3 aspect ratio. There are many ways to do that with emulator output; if preserving sharp pixels is your goal I'd upscale a NTSC SNES frame with a nearest-neighbor filter to a width of 6 * 256 = 1536 pixels and a height of 5 * 224 = 1120 pixels (and PAL SNES height to 5 * 239 = 1195), then bilinear-resize the result to 1440x1080.
(Of course the _real_ aspect ratio is slightly different... A console can add small borders depending on when exactly it's rendering pixels, and its pixels can be packed almost arbitrarily tight together... It all depends on the frequency that is chosen for the pixel clock.)
Is that video intro the part of tekken2’s intro with nina? What a throw back if that was the case.
Mega Man X 3 was the most graphic impressive to me, donkey kong first snes game was 2nd, & 3rd was Ken Griffey baseball .
I love the look of the SNES Megaman games, but I’m far too bad at playing them hehe…
Haha they are difficult for sure!
my friend was trying to discover the last ultra on KI, spinals. no one in the world knew it. He literally figured it out on the SNES game at home weeks befor eothers. Thats how good of a port it was.
I need the source of that Orchid thumbnail
I'm a jaded old MegaDive fan.
And most things here could've been ported well to my first love..
Everything Except anything RARE did .
True Lies is my fav game on the Snes
Its a shame that us in the U.S. didn't get Terranigma. Good thing for emulation. Also, the DKC games are amazing and hold up very well even to this day.
Awesome
I played Megaman 8 first and thought it looked amazing. But i was surprised that MM and Bass looked exactly the same. I didnt think the snes could do that especially with MM7 looking the way it did (which also was pretty good)
the song that starts at the megaman & bass section please what is it called
Holy crap, Winter Gold looks good for an N64 game, let alone a SNES game!
Snes is my favorite console of all time
Hard to believe Mario Kart would become a far bigger success than expected; almost 2/3 of Wii U owners had it with a similar effect on Switch. Killer exclusive with colossal attach rate
Never got the complaint about DKC 3, or DKC1, solid at its worst. Enemy sprite change? Either way very charming
where is the artwork from? thx
As bad as it was, the SNES DOOM was my only access to it at the time, and I personally loved it!
Among the 3 entries in the DKC trilogy, Dixie Kong's Double Trouble stands out with graphics.... however, the sound and music falls flat.
Anyone else play DOOM online on the SNES back in the day? Peak gaming right there xD
One game I think deserves a mention in one of these videos is Drakkhen.
Its a port of a 1989 game from the Commodore Amiga. The original game, while having aged poorly in certain ways and excellently in others, is super ahead of its time. It is one of the first pseudo 3D open world games with a day and night cycle, as well as real time combat with a 4 player party. When you enter dungeons, caves, or combat the game shifts from a first person perspective to a sort of sort of beat em up perspective.
The aspect of the game having a day and night cycle within a decently sized open world (which contained 4 different biomes) is, in my opinion, worthy of being on a list of graphically impressive SNES games.
Good shout, I’ll have to include for the next part 🙂
@@thatvideogamesshow I also recommend the sequel, Dragon View.
