    I love this video! There’s a quote someone said about people who want to be vegan but love cheese - be vegan except for cheese! Harrison and I were vegan for a long time and are now vegetarian but try to be vegan 90% of the time. I agree vegan cheese has a ways to go. BUT I truly believe vegan burgers, chicken, and many other things are right on par with the real thing. If you ever come to Rhode Island for some reason I have to take you the BEST vegan restaurants and vegan donuts so good even Ashley might prefer them over Krispy Kreme 😂

      @@ahhitskatie9094 That's awesome!! PVDonuts has the best vegan (and non-vegan) donuts with flavors like dunkaroo, pop tart and cereal milk. Garden Grille has soo many options, my favorite is the roasted butternut squash quesadilla. Right next door to Garden Grille is Wildflour bakery which is a completely vegan bakery with tons of delicious stuff to choose from. The Grange is an amazing breakfast/brunch spot with vegan sausage and waffles and stuff like that. Nice Slice pizzeria has incredible vegan pizza and it is HUGE. Veggie Fun is a vegan Chinese restaurant that has perfectly replicated Chinese food golden fingers but vegan 😍Everything there is so good. India restaurant has really good Indian food. Like No Udder is a wicked good vegan ice cream place that serves all types of ice cream and toppings, and they even sell vegan candy bars like vegan milky way bars! If you go to Adeline's Speakeasy in Cumberland, they have THE MOST amazing vegan burger. The chef will make you anything you want vegan, I know because my dad owns the restaurant hahah :) And of course Rhode Island's famous Dels lemonade is vegan, you'll see tons of Del's trucks in the summer :) All of the places I mentioned are in Providence besides Adelines which is in Cumberland. I really think that Rhode Island is an underrated vegan hotspot!!

    My wife is strictly vegan for ethical reasons, and I am “vegan leaning” (still use dairy products, cheese and half and half in tea and have occasional meat). Honestly, killing an animal for my pleasure (particularly factory farming) is pretty horrible, so I find myself by default making vegan choices more than not.
    There are so many new products such as “Impossible and Beyond” burger that really satisfies the most discriminating omnivore palate.
    Thanks for the video, guys!

    I adopted a plant-based diet eight or nine year ago. I thought that the substitutes were certain to disappoint, so I avoided them and completely rethought what constitutes a meal. I've really had no cravings. Though by no means a substitute, hummus has taken the place in my diet that cheese used to occupy. Oh, have to mention that my weight is under control and, at 63, I'm probably fitter and healthier than at any time since my childhood.

    As a vegan for many years I prefer to call it a PLANT BASED diet. Forget meat substitutes and go for fruit, veg, nuts, seeds, beans, grains and pulses. Dairy products are simply liquid meat and totally unnecessary. Cakes and biscuits should be a rare treat. Home cooked meals can avoid too much salt and sugar, with which ready meals are loaded. Flavourings should be based on herbs and spices. You will soon lose your sweet tooth and salt cravings. A little Himalayan Salt is ok though. Hope this helps.

    • @jonpaddick1295
      @jonpaddick1295 Před 4 lety

Loungers bars have a great vegan menu, but my fave 100% vegan restaurant is byChloe in London. The Mac and cheese is delicious and also the Royal Roast, it even has a Yorkshire pudding! I tried going vegan for 5 months and one day while at work I couldn’t breathe I thought I was hyperventilating at first but it progressed rapidly I had just enough time to run out of my office on to my secretary’s area, next thing I remember I was in the ER. I didn’t pay attention to any of the signs but found out I’m super allergic to soy & tree nuts. It’s strange since I have eaten nuts in the past and many products contain soy now, but the specialists say it can come on all of a sudden. My advice is get tested for soy & nuts before starting a vegan diet. You can still be successful just be careful. Hugzz💖

    This was really interesting, I'll certainly try some of those places if I visit Brighton. I'm not vegan, but I do eat a lot of vegetarian and vegan foods. It's amazing what can be achieved if given some serious thought to flavours and various vegetable substitutes - we could all eat a lot less meat. The flavour you detected in the vegan fish probably was soy sauce, because soy bean itself has hardly any flavour at all. It doesn't taste like soy sauce or remotely fishy, because it's not fermented. The fermentation process is what creates the flavour of soy sauce, not the soy itself. Your vegan fish was most likely marinated in a whole lot of soy sauce, and probably yeast extract too. Those two are nearly always used in the flavouring of fake fish substitutes.

    Great Video! And yes, you absolutely don't have to sacrifice flavour by going vegan. For me (I'm vegetarian for two years now) it was an adventure to discover just the taste of a lot of different vegetables, I didn't care about and thought I never like. And that I would never have tried, because the meat was basically the dish. That's how almost everyone in the western world was raised. It's the meat with some sides, that are unimportant. I've found that to be wrong, and experimenting with new dishes, to try to make something work vegetable based, that I used to love as a meat dish, that makes me really quite happy … 😁

    I'm not vegan, but 2 days a week I go meat free...sometimes vegan, and I have found some of the meat substites like 'Meat the alternative' soya mince from Waitrose and some Violife Prosociano cheese makes a Lasagne (with vegan milk and Bertolli butter) makes a very good meal. Dare I say I prefer it from meat!
    I used Lasagne as an example, as it's the number one ready meal in the UK, but there are masses of recipes out there.

    We can all do with eating fewer animal products; however, do remember that not all agricultural land is suitable for arable purposes, and would lie fallow if no animals grazed it. Also, do remember there are plenty of cuisines in the world where veganism is normal, and you don't have to eat fake "meat" or "cheese"! As Ash says in the video, you can get perfectly good vegan sushi without having to put fake fish, no matter how delicious, into it. I cook a great many vegan meals, but don't try to pretend they are a substitute for meat or fish - they aren't, but they are delicious in their own right.

    Glad that you enjoyed the food, and Brighton looks a great place to go if you are vegan. The amount of places in the UK that have vegan options has increased rapidly over that past four or five years, which is great for me. For doughnut loving vegans in the midlands try DoughNotts, in Nottingham, Leicester and Derby. Large vegan doughnut selection.

    If that meal at 10:30 contained yoghurt, then it's not vegan...
    The stuff that is put into beer to clarify it is called finings (and is used in brewing wine too and event some soft drinks). It's a protein that causes the tiny particles that cause cloudiness to clump together so that they can settle out. The stuff made from fish swim bladders is called isinglass. There are some plant-based alternatives (one is made from Irish moss).
    It's particularly an issue with cask-conditioned beers as those are generally unfiltered and finings are added when the beer is put into the cask to help clarify the beer so the sediment settles out. That haziness of cloudiness from cask conditioned beer is dominated by the yeast that is still present and active when the beer is racked off.
    Beer served from pressurised pumps (like most lagers) and bottled beer are probably just filtered (and pasteurised). It's the stuff which still contains active yeast when racked into a cask which will often use finings from animal sources.

      I'd argue there's something quite 'wrong' about gassing animals and sticking a knife in their throat, because humans like the taste of their dead bodies.

  • @moyashisoba
    @moyashisoba Před 4 lety +1

    I really loved to watch this video, it was interesting what you are thinking about those substitutes.
    Although eating vegan does not need substitutes in general but I get that if you really love the taste and mouthfeel of certain foods, it's hard to cut those out and the substitutes will help switching to a (more) vegan diet. Unfortunately a lot of vegan products you are able to buy in supermarkets are not very healthy. But with time you learn which products are good and which to avoid.
    As you said, it's great when you just cut out some animal products. People often think they have to change drastically, small changes can affect so much, if a lot of people will act like that, it'll help a lot. You don't have to be on a vegan diet to change the world, just change a little bit.
    I started like that and I ate meat just once or twice a week and because of that I appreciated meat and cheese way more. Somehow I ended up as a vegan over the years but I always had a hard time missing cheese. Since I discovered cashew cheese I don't miss it that much. They also make a kind of camembert, delicious. Now I'm sometimes producing my own cashew cheese these days. It's a lot of fun but you have to wait so many days for it's being ready.
    You are in the US right now, right? If you get the chance, maybe try a beyond burger. It tastes very much like meat, the sausages are even more meaty in taste. At least it's interesting to try.

    I eat meat, but my sister has been vegetarian most of her life and when I have a meal out with her I generally go for the vegetarian option. I do like plant based food, but like Josh I can't live without bacon (a bacon and brown sauce sandwich is the best hangover food). Let's be clear, a vegan diet is not intrinsically healthy, and many vegans suffer health issues caused by their diet. A survey found that on average vegans visit the doctor 3 times as often as the average person, and take twice as many sick days off work. If you are concerned about the greenhouse gas aspect, then just cut out red meat, but you can still eat chicken, eggs and fish. Meat and animal products contain nutrients essential to human health which you just cannot get from plants. To compensate many vegans add chemical supplements to their food, but that is a bit hit and miss. At the end of the day, is it really worthwhile to have to obsess about what you eat instead of just enjoying food without a care in the world?
