Ultimately everything comes down to ego. Even the most altruistic selfless activity can still be understood as egoistic. "Making people feel good makes ME feel good". Acknowledgment of that fact is where the most pure of intentions can be formed.
VeganJam Nah, altruism is real. It might serve some purpose, but from the standpoint of the individual, there is a such thing as true altruism, and it has nothing to do with ego.
Brain Mind Most circumstances in which altruism is seen in action are related to an egoistic aspect of someone's beliefs. The definition of altruism itself implies no relation to ego but in action, even though often subconsciously, altruistic actions are pleasing to the ego.
VeganJam I think your definition of ego is pretty vague. Everyone does stuff to make himself happier or more content. So now every such act is play of ego?
VeganJam The only time (apparent) altruism has to do with ego is if someone is trying to prove they’re better than someone else. Risking your life or well-being (or just going out of your way) for someone else (or an animal) as a genuine act of compassion with no expectation of praise is a real thing and has nothing to do with ego (true altruism).
ego is just one part of our being. pure intentions are beyond the ego. what if you do something that is good for someone else, but bad for you? it does not always make you feel good, but it does help you feel more a part of everything. it does not feel like ego in that case. Maybe there's levels of feeling good or connected that are not based on ego? im quite sure of it, personally. it's a good step forward to realize that you can directly benefit from helping others, as you say feel good. but there are levels way beyond that. ive seen folks who really manifest action beyond ego, and I have felt it at times(work in progress). I think this is where classic meditation practices, taught by a truly skilled person, can help a great deal. in the west, it's gonna take a while to work all this out, but they already did the work, from zen, some other buddhist methods, taoism, and others...
I believe excellience BEGINS when you let go of your ego. Once you do you start to realize others opinions of you DONT matter and all that matters is what’s important to YOU. All ego does it make you be more and more afraid to fully be your best self
Im sooo happy that so many people recognize their ego, awareness and take it all to the next level!! I thought i was the crazy one around!! You all make me happy gj mates ❤️❤️❤️.
About Musashi. I read the book written about him, about his life and I was so touched by that book and this character 10 years ago, about his discipline and will power and convictions. Last year I went to Japan and visited the exact place where Mushashi stayed for the last years of his life, a cave in the forrest and he wrote there the Book of five Rings. The place is absolutely amazing, so zen, peaceful, there are statues of stone meditating in the alley heading to the cave. I remember I sat in the cave and contemplate the fact that that dude was there 500 years back and writing all that filosophy. That experience was mind blowing. I never expected to get to the actual cave where he lived after I just read a book about him.
Exactly what I am dealing with atm, wanting to be a champ you feel like you need your ego it keeps that desire on, but you as well want that peace that comes once the ego is gone
That's the dilema... going through the path of power and ego but risking it to overflow and damage your life and relationships, or going through the path of disintegrating your ego for peace but losing a big part of that inner flame of energy and ambition that ego provides you to fight for your goals. I think the way is to find a balance and eliminate the toxic parts of ego but not to try to get rid of it entirely.
Not being able to explain my thoughts went on for like 2 years . I started meditating and it took away a lot of the anxiety of not thinking I could explain myself and let the shit rip .
Money can buy happiness. Nobody said the happiness had to last forever but I bet you'll have a smile on your face buying your dream car. Hell, I bought something to eat yesterday I was happy as hell.
Having a healthy Ego is fine. Ego has a bad connection with narcissism, but that' s not really fair. Ego in a healthy brain keeps you from joining the wrong crowds, and doing what everyone else is doing. Ego tells you that you don't need that girl, because she's broken, and you're better enough to know not to pursue her. Ego is self esteem. The key word being self. Ego becomes bad when a person derives their own ego from OTHERS. When someone NEEDS, and is ADDICTED TO others giving them their "SELF" esteem, that's when you get narcissists.
Wow as an MMA fan seeing this clip for the first time it’s crazy seeing Sean now vs back then. The man literally did what he claimed he was going to do
Money itself might not make you happy, but freedom does. Thus, the more money you have, the more secure and free you are. That's why if you are going to work, make sure it's something that is worth doing in terms of money as long as it doesn't make you miserable.
I have felt like that, when I feel I am learning so much that i cannot organize the lessons in my mind to explain them, and because I am not yet living them fully. And I really think you can succeed without ego, you will be then successing from love, love will be the force that drives you to do what you want to do.
No ego = big success automatically because you are already happy and many other things. Big ego = greater success in terms of real world achievement though because you need and want it more, you are also less happy but that doesn't mean you are not happy or fulfilled. It takes a shed load of work to lose the ego though, its not just a simple life choice its a huge undertaking that you may or may not succeed at
My optimistic side says yes. But if we look at history, every important great person had an ego to some degree. with some egotists doing good and some doing bad
Yeah I feel like its too big of a feat to not be all in. When you put so much time and work into something it will effect you on a personal level unless you're a complete machine.
88and6 Every single negative feeling and bad habit formed a tightly coiled ball of fear, anxiety and overall malevolence right before my eyes. What scared me the most was how uniform it was. As if I had finely tuned them to act on their own will. Absolutely horrible to trip over, but it's since helped a lot. Especially with trying to remain mindful.
bob saget SHIT. Sorry you had to endure that, but at least you took away something meaningful from the chaos. My last trip was almost verbatim to your trip. Was the tightly coiled ball manifesting images of your fear and anxiety?
88and6 No problem, I don't mind a bad trip. It all ends up fine in the end anyways. I will say this one was the most distinct. It sounds really corny, but the ball would lead me whichever direction I wanted. Whether it be a feeling, memory, or habit. Good or bad. It was like opening a book that read "YOU IDIOT, here's what you need to do to be a better person" on every page.
Based off my own experience I have such a small ego that I’ve completely chipped away at for so long that even though I “want” to build a huge empire... my truth is too strong it stands in my way and makes me almost in a constant state of meditation and zen.. I’m like a monk.. it’s really “hard” for me to do “big things” not because I don’t know how but because I have very little need or want to due to me working so hard to dissipate my own ego.
That was wonderfully enlightening. I paused the video several times, projected my thoughts, went down rabbit holes, and ultimately made a lot of emotional/mental progress. Thank you for that.
The Ego is what drives people to succeed and it drives humanity to progress. It is what initially makes us want to do something big and lead. Our Ego is the thing that makes us focused and not over think things, but also what makes us work hard in order to not become embarrassed, as people with an ego tend to experience failure worse then other people. Personally I am a totally laid back guy, takes a bit to make me stressed and pissed off and at the end of the day, my goal in life is to just be comfy and happy. But I notice I am very driven and focused when it comes to what I want in a career, but I have also noticed when I am around my peers I do have an ego, not in a douchey way, but a recognition that "I am better then most people in this course". That is a very egotistical thing to say, but on the flip side, I turn up to uni every day, Monday to Saturday, 9 to 9 learning, my peers say its crazy that I can work that long but to me it is a natural drive to prove myself and I am convinced this is down to the mind's natural ego, which I have not been fully conditioned to suppress.
what are you saying, man? The ego and having the drive to achieve something are two different things. "this is down to the mind's natural ego" - you are born with an ego, and you'll probably die with one. At its very core, and stripped of any and every social construct, ego is nothing but what is also called "survival instinct" aka preservation of self.
Losing your ego changes your definition of success. So yes you can succeed without ego, but it might not look like someone that is traditionally seen as successful.

Or else the animal will disobey and not respect the king, run rampant and take over the king. The king is your better self, that knows better. So it's best that you always keep that thing on a leash and decide the animal what to do than it deciding for you.
I think doing it without the ego is the ultimate process
Then I guess one day you will realize that you can't do "it" without the ego and that the whole purpose is to navigate life through it.
@Tony exactly. if you aren't telling yourself you are the best and you will dominate then wtf are you doing?
@@joys8634 i think thinking you suck isnt the same as having no ego. if you think you suck, thats your ego being damaged. having no ego means that you dont think about yourself. you only do.
@@nori_with_rice doesn't make sense at all, and you actually sound delusional. A man with no ego is saying may the best man win. The man with ego is saying he wins with ease. This attack on ego is just insecurity honestly. There is nothing wrong with ego, but people get at you if you have one the same way people try to condemn the rich. Their view of them self is poor, so they try to bring others doing better than them down.
@@joys8634 my bad about what i said earlier, i was thinking about another comment i saw while reading yours so maybe thats why it didnt make sense. also felt like i was saying deep shit, but obviously it was more romanticistically cryptic than deep looking at it again.
about your point about having an ego, you do bring up a good point about having confidence in yourself with enough ego. but, i feel like it gets dangerous if your ego doesnt line up with reality (like if you think you can do 100 push ups when you can only do 25). if everything does line up though, i guess having an ego isnt a bad thing at all if you keep it in check.
now that im thinking about it more, its kind of complicated what you have to do with the ego in regards to accomplishing goals. you need the ego for motivation and confidence, but as far as i know you dont need it while youre in the act of accomplishing something, which is why i said what i said before.
sorry if im rambling and re-editing this a ton, its just that this was surprisingly more complex of a problem than i thought and i found it interesting.
Looking through the comments of people saying Sean is dumb- he's clearly not dumb. He's pausing because the guy actually thinks for himself and is trying to find out what is true and what isn't.
Matthew Eyre Thats how it is.
Due to lack of ego... instead of just being super confident in what he says even if it’s wrong.
confidence and ego are not the same.
@@gabrieltsiry They almost are though. Think about where personal confidence comes from; a certainty or "confidence" that your ideas and the amalgam of things you've learned are all true and that you wish to display this certainty to others. This is ego my friend.
Yes, it is a sad state that in the societies we occupy, ego is a necessity, no-one will take you seriously if you have to pause and analyse the truthfulness of the thoughts contained in your every sentence, and yet as an individual I am no longer impressed by people who can have all consuming confidence in themselves and their actions.

Money buys you happiness point blank period, as long as you have your health and family. It buys stability, it buys freedom and peace of mind.
I agree. I lost my job a month ago and this week I have been stressed over bills I'm worried about getting paid, I'm out of fucking gas even, and if i had some money and wasn't stressing all day everyday now then i would be my normal happy self. It's very hard to be happy when you broke. It fucking sucks really bad. Of course noone is happy ALL the time, but when you have money your stress levels are significantly lower. I guarantee it that if you took all of someone's money who says money doesn't buy happiness you would fuck there head up real quick and they would be depressed as fuck. I'm 35 and havent been broke for about 5 years and this week I'm all out of money. I'm stuck at the house, but I'm lucky I havent got kicked out on the streets yet because I'm behind on rent. It fucking sucks. Then the worst part is people dont really like to loan money so you know someone could help you, but they wont. FML. If I had money right now then I would be fucking thrilled to move on with my fucking life and get the fuck out of the house. This sucks
J H money doesn’t give you happiness, but not having it can sure take it away
Up to a certain point, yeah, to have all your basic necessities covered with no stress and being able to have a life. But just for the pursuit of more material possessions, no
@@nightfighter7452 luckily now that I'm reading this I have found another job and I'm back on my feet! Two months ago fucking sucked! Thank the universe I have a clean record and could still find a decent job!
ur so right & so wrong . it buys stability freedom & peace of mind but not happiness
VeganJam
I think your definition of ego is pretty vague.
Joe,
The world needs to hear you talking with geniuses who can help us move forward. You're the bridge.
"Once you understand the way broadly you will see it in all things"
I had to write this down it is worth remembering
I believe excellience BEGINS when you let go of your ego. Once you do you start to realize others opinions of you DONT matter and all that matters is what’s important to YOU. All ego does it make you be more and more afraid to fully be your best self
Being rich doesn't make you happy, not being poor does.
Huge difference

Yeah well said my friend.. So, what you do?
That's the dilema... going through the path of power and ego but risking it to overflow and damage your life and relationships, or going through the path of disintegrating your ego for peace but losing a big part of that inner flame of energy and ambition that ego provides you to fight for your goals. I think the way is to find a balance and eliminate the toxic parts of ego but not to try to get rid of it entirely.
The Ego is like every other thing, it’s important in a balanced way.
Not being able to explain my thoughts went on for like 2 years . I started meditating and it took away a lot of the anxiety of not thinking I could explain myself and let the shit rip .

He’s gonna be a absolute monster in the future. His mindset is awesome
Money might not make you happy. But it will certainly ease hardship
This was the connection I’ve been needing to hear, thank you
Wow as an MMA fan seeing this clip for the first time it’s crazy seeing Sean now vs back then. The man literally did what he claimed he was going to do
Money itself might not make you happy, but freedom does. Thus, the more money you have, the more secure and free you are. That's why if you are going to work, make sure it's something that is worth doing in terms of money as long as it doesn't make you miserable.

Learning and gaining new perspectives is a key life tool.
My optimistic side says yes. But if we look at history, every important great person had an ego to some degree. with some egotists doing good and some doing bad
Wondering Brit too much of anything is bad
Noone has done that in history, stop the workers from working and let see if through ego alone people can thrive. Exactly.
The mathematician G.H. Hardy said that "good work is not done by humble men." Hardy was a bit of an ass though.
Does being an important great person equal success? Maybe to your definition, not all people view success as being important.
Yeah I feel like its too big of a feat to not be all in. When you put so much time and work into something it will effect you on a personal level unless you're a complete machine.
Love it when Joe says things like "that's a dude who fought people with a fucking sword!"
My last mushroom trip scared the shit out of me, and for good reason. Terrifying, yet much needed.
bob saget how so?
Try a lower dose and try not to freak out.

I could watch these two talk all day
Everything is made with good intention, misuse makes it evil. The key is to find the balance.
It's called the disare to achive. If I thought I'm the best right now without a desire or talent I'm not going anywhere.
what are you saying, man? The ego and having the drive to achieve something are two different things. "this is down to the mind's natural ego" - you are born with an ego, and you'll probably die with one. At its very core, and stripped of any and every social construct, ego is nothing but what is also called "survival instinct" aka preservation of self.
"I am better than most people in this course" - this is an illusion of your ego in fact 😅
Losing your ego changes your definition of success. So yes you can succeed without ego, but it might not look like someone that is traditionally seen as successful.
