    People like that drive me crazy and seriously ruin lives "money doesn't make you happy". Actually it objectively does. Having a nice, safe place to live, eating food that is healthy and tastes good, having healthcare, a reliable car... Not to mention doing the activities you love, or having money to start a family or at least have a girlfriend. ALL THIS TAKES MONEY. And makes you happy. Money is strongly correlated with happiness, until about $80,000/year then it flattens out. So don't exxagerate saying "money doesn't make you happy" when it really does. But once you have ALL the basic life neceessites and pleasures covered, THEN it doesn't make you MORE happy.

    Wanting to perform in front of others comes from wanting to receive recognition. This feeds the ego. Problem arises when you can no longer receive this dose of recognition - the ego doesn't know what to do and it acts out in form of anxiety, depression, anger, etc. We have to constantly be keeping tabs on ego to make sure it does not become dominance force or it will lead to problems down the road. I am saying this from experience.

      about your point about having an ego, you do bring up a good point about having confidence in yourself with enough ego. but, i feel like it gets dangerous if your ego doesnt line up with reality (like if you think you can do 100 push ups when you can only do 25). if everything does line up though, i guess having an ego isnt a bad thing at all if you keep it in check.
      now that im thinking about it more, its kind of complicated what you have to do with the ego in regards to accomplishing goals. you need the ego for motivation and confidence, but as far as i know you dont need it while youre in the act of accomplishing something, which is why i said what i said before.
      sorry if im rambling and re-editing this a ton, its just that this was surprisingly more complex of a problem than i thought and i found it interesting.

    Ultimately everything comes down to ego. Even the most altruistic selfless activity can still be understood as egoistic. "Making people feel good makes ME feel good". Acknowledgment of that fact is where the most pure of intentions can be formed.

    • @brainmind4070
      @brainmind4070 Před 6 lety +3

      VeganJam Nah, altruism is real. It might serve some purpose, but from the standpoint of the individual, there is a such thing as true altruism, and it has nothing to do with ego.

      @Grillmouth Před 6 lety +7

      Brain Mind Most circumstances in which altruism is seen in action are related to an egoistic aspect of someone's beliefs. The definition of altruism itself implies no relation to ego but in action, even though often subconsciously, altruistic actions are pleasing to the ego.

      I think your definition of ego is pretty vague.

      So now every such act is play of ego?

    • @brainmind4070
      @brainmind4070 Před 6 lety +2

      VeganJam The only time (apparent) altruism has to do with ego is if someone is trying to prove they’re better than someone else. Risking your life or well-being (or just going out of your way) for someone else (or an animal) as a genuine act of compassion with no expectation of praise is a real thing and has nothing to do with ego (true altruism).

    • @stillnessinmovement
      @stillnessinmovement Před 6 lety +1

      ego is just one part of our being. pure intentions are beyond the ego. what if you do something that is good for someone else, but bad for you? it does not always make you feel good, but it does help you feel more a part of everything. it does not feel like ego in that case. Maybe there's levels of feeling good or connected that are not based on ego? im quite sure of it, personally. it's a good step forward to realize that you can directly benefit from helping others, as you say feel good. but there are levels way beyond that. ive seen folks who really manifest action beyond ego, and I have felt it at times(work in progress). I think this is where classic meditation practices, taught by a truly skilled person, can help a great deal. in the west, it's gonna take a while to work all this out, but they already did the work, from zen, some other buddhist methods, taoism, and others...

    About Musashi. I read the book written about him, about his life and I was so touched by that book and this character 10 years ago, about his discipline and will power and convictions. Last year I went to Japan and visited the exact place where Mushashi stayed for the last years of his life, a cave in the forrest and he wrote there the Book of five Rings. The place is absolutely amazing, so zen, peaceful, there are statues of stone meditating in the alley heading to the cave. I remember I sat in the cave and contemplate the fact that that dude was there 500 years back and writing all that filosophy. That experience was mind blowing. I never expected to get to the actual cave where he lived after I just read a book about him.

I think the way is to find a balance and eliminate the toxic parts of ego but not to try to get rid of it entirely.

    Having a healthy Ego is fine. Ego has a bad connection with narcissism, but that' s not really fair. Ego in a healthy brain keeps you from joining the wrong crowds, and doing what everyone else is doing. Ego tells you that you don't need that girl, because she's broken, and you're better enough to know not to pursue her.
    Ego is self esteem. The key word being self. Ego becomes bad when a person derives their own ego from OTHERS. When someone NEEDS, and is ADDICTED TO others giving them their "SELF" esteem, that's when you get narcissists.

    The Ego is what drives people to succeed and it drives humanity to progress. It is what initially makes us want to do something big and lead. Our Ego is the thing that makes us focused and not over think things, but also what makes us work hard in order to not become embarrassed, as people with an ego tend to experience failure worse then other people. Personally I am a totally laid back guy, takes a bit to make me stressed and pissed off and at the end of the day, my goal in life is to just be comfy and happy. But I notice I am very driven and focused when it comes to what I want in a career, but I have also noticed when I am around my peers I do have an ego, not in a douchey way, but a recognition that "I am better then most people in this course". That is a very egotistical thing to say, but on the flip side, I turn up to uni every day, Monday to Saturday, 9 to 9 learning, my peers say its crazy that I can work that long but to me it is a natural drive to prove myself and I am convinced this is down to the mind's natural ego, which I have not been fully conditioned to suppress.
