      I'm sure if the dealer had any extra inventory, they would swap out your 20" wheels/tires for some 18" wheels from inventory. Selling a lower trim level car with higher trim level wheels is quite easy to do.

    Great test! 12000 miles in a SE AWD I6 with 18" wheels and I am averaging 4.4 miles/kWh. It's probably 10-15% more efficient than the versions with 20" wheels. Nice car and a really comfortable cruiser with tons of interior room but a little lacking in cargo space.

      The trunk remains pretty spatious though. I have a trunk organizer in pushed in the back of it, and I still can put much luggage and some bags. The under-trunk is a bit small, but mainly because it’s a styrofoam box that itself takes most of the space. I have to find a way to replace that with something thiner (maybe yoga-mats glued down).
      In the RWD in the EU-version, the frunk is decent enough to put your groceries (even though there is no keyfob button to open it, you still have to use the classic hood handle in the drivers dood opening, like ICE cars), but in the AWD (or the US-RWD), it’s nearly useless: I have a Lv2 cable in it and that’s all. There are aftermarket parts to change that in the US (I’m in the EU).
      The no-hatchback situation can be a bummer for some persons, but not for me. The rear seats can still fold down and create a lot of depth, thank to the back seats having that incredible leg space.

    I would like to see the test with the RWD Long range with the smaller wheels. Our Ioniq 5 also does better than EPA estimates, 2 weeks ago we drove 201 miles non stop and still had 28% battery left with 76 miles left. But it was mixed freeway and back road highways so less then 70mph average. The I6 is a nice car but I would rather have the extra room in our I5 over a few miles of extra range, in 18k miles haven't come close to running out of battery yet.

      Edmunds has a running list that they do on a track with varying speeds. The 2022 Kona matches the model 3 standard range for efficiency at 23 kWh/ 100 mi.
      The EPA estimates are 28 and 24 respectively.
      The Niro comes in at 25.6.
      The only cars that have done better in their tests are the 2020 Ionic and Cooper. Both small cars with small and light batteries.
      The standout in the tests in my eyes is the Model Y long range. It comes in at 26.2. Basically matching the RWD EV6 wind.
      The most surprising thing to me was that the Rivian is less efficient than the Lightning.

    @protovack Před 8 měsíci +7

    the width of the tires probably has a lot to do with the range hit from the 20" wheels too. They are much wider than the 18" wheels. So it's not just diameter/weight. The wider tires would give a much more stable road feel with better performance, grip, braking, acceleration, etc. My guess is Hyundai wants to force the 20" performance wheel/tire combo into as many builds as possible in the first model year so that reviewers always get a high-performing vehicle. Later on, they will make the smaller diameter/width wheels and tires more available on other trims, once the initial "impression" has been made. Visually, the same goes. Most of the early cars have the big sparkly 20" rims, making people take notice. Later on, they'll allow more builds with the "uglier" small wheels. Personally, i think this is a stupid strategy since it turns people away from the car who care about range. But it gets really good range anyway, despite the wheels, so Hyundai doesn't really lose all that much. Most people don't dive into the specs like many early-adopters and internet EV enthusiasts. But the range hit with the 20" wheels is quite significant, and enough to turn away a few buyers, some of whom might be frustrated with their trim level decisions and not come back to the brand. Personally I'd be concerned about that, if I was in charge at Hyundai, but im not so.....

      I would prefer removal of the lucid in the future. It's big range bar makes it harder to see the difference between the rest since it squishes everything. Put that one with the likes of the eqs and model s.
      Also, as a data scientist, it's definitely not lazy to trim down your visuals to make them easier to digest. Such things usually take more effort than just tossing everything in.

    So 280 miles to 0, more like 260 before you would want to charge, then you can only charge to 80 at resonable speeds so every leg of trip after the first loses 30%. That puts it about 195 miles. This is getting pretty close to my dream of 3 hours of highway driving in 15 minutes of charging. Here's hoping the 2025 or 2026 EV models will hit that target.

    In my EV6 GT 3.7 at 80mph is normal in normal mode on highway. Range is over 230 miles without running battery down last 5%. The WHOLE key for owning an EV is the ability to have a level 2 charger in your own garage. So this leaves out most apartment renters. And even here in vegas most commercial charging stations have very poor network of actually working DC fast chargers. Even a commercial fast charger takes around 20-30 minutes to charge. Who wants to bake out in the 120 degree sun while outside charging car? Not me. Not practical. If you don’t have a level 2 in your garage you will end up hating the car because you can’t charge the thing.

      10% can mean very different things in different cars. They also have different behaviors at low states of charge. Some seem to run out quickly while others seem to last forever, some have big buffers while others have none. Going from 100-0 provides us with the full capability of the car, and it allows us to directly compare the ranges on different vehicles.

    280 miles with 104%, that means 190 miles with 70%. It takes 20 minutes to recharge 70%. That means it charges at an average of 570mph when driving 70mph. The RWD with smaller wheels should crack the 600mph mark. Any other EVs out there that can do this? I don't think so, and the average charging speed for a 70% charge (i.e. 10-80% for this car, or 0-70% for Tesla) in mph is the only relevant metric for long distance trips, at least when comparing with cars of similar range. The Lucid Air also charges slower than the Ioniq 6, but its range advantage compensates for that. Alternatively you could only charge 200 miles at a time with the Lucid, and then it should be able to keep up or outcharge the ioniq 6. But then, the Lucid doesn't really matter, does it?

    • @GraysonCarr
      @GraysonCarr Před 8 měsíci

      The big question in the US is… how reliably can you pull those charging speeds from EA or EVgo chargers? You would have trouble finding an available and working 350 kW charger at every stop.
      I was curious how Model 3 RWD compared, so I ran the numbers. Even though it’s not known for its high speed charging, it’s very efficient and has a decent charging curve. It charges at 504 mph if driving 70 mph and charging 10-60% (264*.955*.5 * 60/15), or 407 mph if charging 10-80% (264*.955*.7 * 60/26).

    • @adrianguggisberg3656
      @adrianguggisberg3656 Před 8 měsíci

      @@GraysonCarr I don't know the US Model 3. It's differnt from the European version in some ways and certainly has a different battery. I don't think the European M3 in any configuration would take a worth the while longer or shorter time to cross Europe than the Ioniq 6.
      However, there are far, far more high power public chargers and charging sites than Superchargers in Europe, and the Hyundai route planner and sat nav works better in its current form than Teslas. So this might be slightly more convenient than a Model 3 and certainly a lot more comfortable and less noisy.
      As for the US I understand that public charging is lacking, similar to Australia or somewhat less in the UK, too. And I assume the charging issues will vary greatly in different states and communities. But that's all hear-say, it's over 20 years since I last was in the US, so I don't know anything about anything.
      The reality is, an EV isn't a petrol car, it has completely different advantages and disadvantages, and you will have to allow for that in your habits. If you try to replicate the petrol car owner experience with an EV, it will not work in any case, but a Tesla maybe comes closest. If you treat it like a blank page, with no particular expectations, you will quickly learn that EVs are actually great cars, better than petrol cars in almost every imaginable way, and that every coin has two faces, even the fact that EVs won't get you as far as quickly as a petrol car.

    Hmm. Yeah I'm calling BS on the long range RWD being able to do 361 miles. Atleast on this test.
    The car would need to hit an efficiency of 4.7 to do that. At 70mph I don't think there's a car on the market that can hit that.
    I really wish manufacturers cut the single EPA stated range and instead gave us efficiency numbers. Like "x car has 80kwh battery. gets 5m/kwh at 55mph. 4m/kwh at 70mph. 3.5m/kwh at 80mph." Or some shit like that. Or just make it a linear graph showing the speed on the x axis and efficiency on the y.
